Torontonians can't participate in Earth hour because their main source of heat is their lighting?!?! That's what Don was implying, and most of you all just cheered on that flawed logic.
In any regard, the idea that anyone here is holding Don Cherry up on a pedestal for anything other than hockey is hilarious, but quite telling and fitting all the same.

Posted by: anon at March 30, 2008 2:28 PMHey anon
Why would we be proud of what Cherry said about Mr. Left wing kook Hypocrit? Some of us think the answer is self evident. Preaching from his massive mansions in Pt Grey or Quadra Island, Suzukook hasn't practiced science in over 40 years, plus he's a "geneticist" not a climatologist or biologist or photoplankton researcher. You are being laffed at because you are a typical vacuous liberal who is "comforted" by ridiculously useless efforts to simply blow money on things like One-Tonne challenges and Earth Hour....just to make you feel morally superior, give the "appearance" of doing something while really doing absolutely nothing.
steve...I guess you missed it: Don Cherry was dissing the global warming fear...furnaces-cold oud side-not warm in Toronto.
Enough details for you?
Watch it again.
OH PLEASE OH PLEASE OH PLEASE let Don Cherry be nominated CPC leader, and then have him run for PM. The DEATH of the CPC would be imminent, and then we could go back to having *real* conservatives in Parliament, rather than these hackjob, glassy-eyed, hypocritically moronic neocon knock-offs.
Posted by: anon at March 30, 2008 2:30 PM"Last I checked most houses had a heating system that functions independently of the light bulbs... Posted by: steve
Well, Steve, you better check again. The heating system and the lighting system are integrally interconnected. You do not draw heat for 30 minutes and then stop; you draw heat until a predefined temperature has been reached. Light bulbs are a non-trivial source of heat in the overall system.
The heating system sends a signal for heat based on the temperature of the room. If heat-generating light bulbs are removed from the equation, heat will be called for earlier, and more heat will be needed and drawn from the heating system.
So, shutting off the lights, and other heat-generating objects, such as TVs, dishwashers, washers, dryers, etc., is mostly an exercise in feeling good.

I noticed the green grass and trees behind the hypocrite and that his apparel was a shirt only, with vest. (Wearing three layers and gloves, I was quite chilly outside today.) And this arrogant, self-referential prig has the audacity to lecture the rest of us on our carbon footprint!
Well done, Don Cherry, calling a spade a spade--and, under the circumstances, with such self-restraint and politesse!
TVO had a show--by candlelight: sheesh--the other night. When the elite, all lefty, I believe, guests were asked--very sincerely by the host--what they'd do, personally, to change their lifestyles to be more "green", virtually, to a person, they said, "CUT DOWN on my air travel". Isn't that impressive? That's a luxury that most of us don't even have to think about. (I last flew a decade ago: to one place and back.) And the irony of the situation was completely lost on all of them: both the host and the self-referential, navel gazing, goodie-two-shoes guests. Good Lord, deliver us!
The elitist, wealthy likes of Al Gore, who owns a carbon credit company, David Suzuki, and the Hollywood crowd, all of whose carbon footprints make the rest of ours look like pygmies in comparison, are the last people who should be hectoring us about changing lifestyle. For them, that might mean one less vehicle or one less Riviera vacation--"Just look at what a good boy/girl I am for making this sacrifice [sic]!"
These people need to get real. As it is, the optics are very bad and I think these spoiled brats will soon be doing their pet cause more harm than good. 'Can't wait!

If I didn't, I would have no choice but to think that you are irretrievably stupid, say, were you to suggest that the 'self-righteous' should turn off their computers if they were serious about reducing GW.
Yes, in the interests of arguing from a good faith position, I have to assume you were joking. Thus, the raucous laughter at the top of this comment.

You may not like him Anon but his views would be reflective of a significant number....you can piss on him but you would be pissing on those others as well. It will be interesting to see Suzuki's response, if any.

Yea NIN, THATS RIGHT!!. You SHOULD travel the world spreading your smartness!
To start off you could travel accross Canada in a big 60 passenger (Suzucki) bus. And you have enough room you could even take another person with you. Poluting you say. No problemo, just buy carbon credits-just like Suzuki.
After you have polluted all the Canadian air you could then travel to other countries by charter airplane. You know, the kind like Gore has. Hell, they may be big mega-polluters but the good point is you don't even have to buy carbon credits for those cause air travel is excluded from Kyoto.
Besides, don't worry about poluting or C02 at all because your cause is a good one. Its kinda like Gore and Suzucki, who are probably the only people on earth whose SH*T doesn't stink.

Yup, Global Warming is a serious factor here in Calgary. People like to argue that the "weather" is different from the "climate", but it is amazing the amount of contrary scientific evidence mounting against the established "fact". With NASA robot bouys showing a cooling trend in the oceans (the models require a significant warming trend to be correct), the "hockey stick" disproven by the Medieval Warming Period (although I still see it published), NASA's corrected climate data showing the 1930s to be the actual warmest decade on record (funny how that got swept under the carpet), and the investigation of the weather stations in the US for what I call "temperature neutrality" by Climate Audit dot org (they appear to be in recent temperature hotspots; I'd say that skews the data), it is astounding people can criticize Don for his opinion.
And I am not even discussing the lack of water vapour modelling, guesses at cloud effects on the global climate, and most importantly, the blatant assumptions in the model on the effects of CO2 increase on temperature (the gradient for temperature increase in relation to CO2 concentration increase is apparently an untested assumption).
Any literate or scientific mind that blindly believes AGW is insane. AGW may be a real fact, but there is severely insufficient evidence to justify a complete gutting and remodelling of our economy.
And kudos to Don for speaking his mind. Funny how Freedom of Expression is allowed for certain segments of the population, and others are shouted down and ridiculed for having contrarian views.
Posted by: Ln(e) at March 30, 2008 5:35 PMHey everybody, don't forget to watch CBC's first real stab at the HRC/Free speech issue tonight on the Sunday Night version of the National -- "CBC Sunday" or whatever it's called. Ezra is interviewed in it, apparently.
If everyone who's been following the story watches it would be a win-win: if the report is reasonable, CBC will see that their ratings went up because they covered something of interest to the Trudeau's un-Canadians, i.e. actual Canadians.
If the report is another imbalanced, pro HRC/Lib-bureaucracy, 416 cover-up special that omits the salient points, it would get a tasmanian devil dustball of blogo-fury going.
7 pm, I believe.

In one, the Wizard of Flaws pokes his head through a hole in a living room wall and tells the surprised young people to check for energy-leaking cracks, etc. in their house.
Hmmmm. 'Doesn't look like the ads were done by candlelight. I wonder what kind of energy kleig lights consume?
And I wonder how much the Canadian taxpayer is paying Dr. Bigfoot to tell the rest of us to unplug, while he lights up our lives, first-class all the way?

Posted by: Stan at March 31, 2008 10:28 AMI guess those less-than-sharp razors like Suzuki have trouble comprehending that light bulbs, used indoors during the heating season, do not increase electrical consumption. They produce heat. The heat is absosrbed into the building and simply supports the cost of heating. Or to put it more simply kilowatt = heat. Its that simple. Are you heating with electricity? Try this: Turn on all you lights all night and measure your electrical comsumption for the week. Do your normal thing the following week. You will find the electical consumption will be the same. If you are heating with other means such as oil you still are supplementing the heating cost.
