I looked up and down mt street here in Kelowna last night, and not one house turned off their lights for "Earth Hour".

Report from this neighborhood: Having a good look at both the front and back neighbors and streets from our second floor windows during the 'enlightened dark hour' I can say there was ONLY ONE house within my view that turned their lights off! In fact I noticed more backyard lights ON than usual... hee hee!

Those solitary folks who had their lights off were right across the street from us, lol they had candles lit and were looking out their windows at the rest of us not sitting in the dark.

Didn't bother to see if they pulled the full hour either.

There is a cbc employee living on the same block as me.When I arrived home last night I made sure to look and see if all his lights were out,low and behold,his house had more lights on than any other on the block.

My grdau' and her kids are completely brainwashed and my attitude last night did not go over well with her. I did say that what we could do as a family was change our lifestyle to that of the family of the girl I sponsor in Senegal. One of the most welcomed gifts they bought with extra money I sent was an oil lamp so the children could do homework in their mud hut.

The solution to cutting energy in the home is so simple I'm amazed no one has thought of it.

Have your adult children move out.

Our energy bills went down a lot after the kids moved out - no more showers until the hot water ran out, no more TVs, lights, computers, XBoxes, etc. left on in empty rooms, the fridge is opened less often and the microwave is getting downright lonely.

Who knew that, besides getting your life back, empty nesting was good for the planet?

I'm gonna shock a lot of people on both sides ( left and right ) with this,
but divorce has helped a lot in increasing the foot print of western society.

For the same number of people ( a father , a mother and one or two kids ) who were living in one house now energy and resources are being used to warm/cool two houses, lights are on in two houses instead of just one et cetera...

That family does not eat more food but two refrigerators are kept on 24/7 instead of one, and so on and so forth...

Kids of divorced parents have stuff in both houses or in other words ; twice the number of toys, clothes and furniture which required twice the amount of energy and ressource to produce...

There is two of almost everything, using twice the energy and resources,

divorced parents also drive a lot more miles in their car for obvious reasons...and I could go and on with this...

Feminism which is the biggest "promoter" of divorce in western society has helped increase the use of resources and energy, and has helped increase our carbon foot print - almost doubled it!

I'm not saying women should stay in a bad marriage,
that is not what I am saying AT ALL
but before blaming rich white males for our carbon foot print increasing so rapidly since the 70s,
the left/feminists should take a long hard look in the mirror...

Friends, I prostrate myself before you and ask your forgiveness.

Last night we got home late from a day of driving hither and thither. At @2035, having just gone out for some Chinese food my wife told me of our neighbour's phone message reminding us of Earth Hour. Having completely forgotten about the 'sacred' hour, I nearly choked on my freshly poured beer as I ran to the door. I immediately ran outside and proceeded to plug in the Christmas tree lights on our 30 foot Fir. At that time I noticed that our Ottawa street was totally immersed in blackness. When I proceeded to turn every light on in the house, my wife and daughter looked at me as if two heads.

My weakness lies in my inability to weather the storm of criticism I received. Over Chinese food by candlelight, they subjected me to pines of feel good sentiments towards the Earth. Notwithstanding the fact that I cycle to work or take the bus, compost, recycle, take 4 minute showers, do laundry in cold water, don't use drive-thrus, and don't idle my engine etc I relented. Not wanting to ruin an otherwise delicious meal, I pulled the plug on the lights, having assuaged myself that I had made the point, albeit for 15 minutes, that at least one occupant of our household refused to be labelled as a sheeple. I'm only sorry that I didn't snap a pic of the lights against the otherwise darkened street.

To close, please forgive me for my weakness. :-)

Aside from those beeswax candels most candels are made of oil bi-products. I was wondering how much CO2 would be produced by burning them for one hour? Don't they produce various polluting gasses aside from CO2 and what is in those wicks?

Last night on YouTube I chanced upon a rude video of a German boy lighting his farts. Deeply offended, I was forced to search other videos containing the word "furz" and after viewing this video of a German person lighting a candle set on a table a foot away, I had a sudden epiphany regarding the future; I'm convinced we'll eventually be fitted with butt plugs with hoses connected to a bag attached to our belts then transfered and used to power our vehicles. There's presently a tremendous amount of firepower going to waste. Cows too. Especially cows.
