Great Moments In Liberal Leadership

"Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects." - Lester B. Pearson

"Just watch me." - Pierre Trudeau

"I am the leader and I don't want people to be undisciplined." - Stephane Dion

(Related: The penultimate campaign slogan for the failing leftie leader, just lying there for the taking. So there you go, Jason Cherniak - don't ever accuse us Conservative bloggers of hoarding all the good ones for ourselves.)

So noted: In Dion's defense, he didn't have far to fall.

Dion "Why wone dey lissen to me, I'm de leeeder"

It's almost too easy to lampoon, I mean it's simple to make fun of, um, I mean everyone can poke fun at, ahhh...

It's very hard to report what Dion actually says and have it be taken seriously.

I'd be more concerned about other matters today:

from ctv.ca

"The finance department said revenues dropped $900 million, or 3.9 per cent, in January...Meanwhile, program expenses were up $10.8 billion, or 7.2 per cent, for the period..."

Fiscal framework close to blown by these spendthrift "conservatives". Oh well, as long as they talk the talk....

Posted by: tory_watcher at March 28, 2008 3:29 PM

tory watcher....you should be more concerned about your rudderless leader, as long as he's steering the ship we cons are laughing all the way to the bank.

Posted by: h.ryan. at March 28, 2008 3:39 PM

Oh yeah,if ctv is reporting anything about the federal government I tune them out, their colors have been shown along time ago.

Posted by: h.ryan. at March 28, 2008 3:44 PM

Uhm... unlike you I am actually a lot less concerned about the fate of any political party than reasonable stewardship of our economy. Just like a modicum of competence, erring on the side of fiscal prudence. And, oh yeah, I loathe gutter politics and schoolyard taunts, particularly by unaccomplished partisan hacks like Poilievre and his ilk.

And, h.ryan, interesting comment that cons are "laughing all the way to the bank". SOmehting you wish to share?

Posted by: tory_watcher at March 28, 2008 3:45 PM

h.ryan

It came from a release by the Department of Finance. I suppose they too "showed their colours a long time ago. A long time", as has anyone who has ever dared to provide factual information at variance with the Party Line (tm).

Too much attention on Dion and his lack of leadership...Must change the topic! Brenda Martin, Tanking economy, Cadman,...something has got to stick...You think it's izzy to have discipline???

Another great election Liberal slogan:

"Instead of the fear to lose, we need the will to win".

Stéphane Dion

http://www.achannel.ca/ottawa/news_55154.aspx

Variations on the theme for Liberal consideration:

"We need the will to win!"

"Do you think it's easy to have the will to win?"

The Canadian Press

OTTAWA -- The days of the federal government routinely recording surpluses in the tens of billions appear to be over, a new finance department report on its fiscal position suggests.

The department's fiscal monitor released Friday shows that revenue growth came to a sudden halt in January, shrinking the surplus for the month to a mere $600 million as the GST cut and personal income tax reductions announced last fall began eating away at Ottawa's tax haul.

The finance department said revenues dropped $900 million, or 3.9 per cent, in January. Last year during the month, the budgetary surplus was $2.4 billion.

For the first 10 months of the fiscal year that ends Monday, the accumulated surplus was $10 billion, down $600 million from the corresponding period last year.

"The results to date reflect the impact of personal income tax relief measures introduced in the October 2007 economic statement," the report states.

Meanwhile, program expenses were up $10.8 billion, or 7.2 per cent, for the period, due to higher transfer payments to provinces and individuals, and program expenses, such as the cost of fighting the war in Afghanistan.

Program spending by the Defence Department stood at $14.5 billion by the end of January, up 10.7 per cent from the corresponding 10-month period last year.

Prior to Finance Minister Jim Flaherty's fall mini-budget, many had been predicting the federal surplus for the fiscal year could top $20 billion.

But in last month's budget, Flaherty forecast the year's surplus would be $10.2 billion, dropping to $2.3 billion next year and $1.3 billion in the 2009-2010 period.

The January fiscal monitor appears to confirm that the surpluses enjoyed in recent years are unlikely to be matched for some time due to a combination of tax cuts and a slowing economy expected to grow just slightly above last year's 2.7 per cent rate.

A bright spot in the report is that the cost of servicing the national debt continues to fall as a result of lower interest rates and the government's record of making payments on the principal. Debt charges were down $400 million during the first 10 months of the fiscal year.

The young Iggy folks seemed to think that they had come for a coronation.

I thought this was another gem from the same article:

"I have a much better team than [Conservative Leader and Prime Minister Stephen] Harper. Not only is it better, it's united," Mr. Dion said.

Ya, and my Leafs are better than the Red Wings.

If his team is so strong, then it must be the leader who isn't in order for them to be riding the opposition pine.

Posted by: Pierce at March 28, 2008 4:06 PM

What's your point TW? Cutting taxes is a good thing. Increased spending (especially to the provinces) has a to-be-determined outcome. Lowering the debt service charges is a very good thing.

Let's not be too hard on the Lib leader.

Remember his statement- that in some quarters he is a "REHO'.

But in Hungary his "Reho" might well translate into Liberal "lo fuss"!

Ask some hunky you might know to do the translation.

It seems to me the strength of the Canadian dollar, or the weakness of the U. S. dollar, is hurting some Canadian exports as similar U. S. products are now competitive. West Coast ports are backed up with domestic products trying to meet overseas demand. While I like seeing U. S. yellow metal mapping the earth as much as anyone, the current course of the dollar is undermining my retirement hoard. No answers but surely a lot of questions and concerns. One is farely certain PM Harper has picked up the red phone more than once by now.

I've been wondering if Mr. Dion sounds like as much of a doof in French as he does in Franglais. Given this uprising in Quebec, it would seem he sounds worse.

Posted by: The Phantom at March 28, 2008 6:52 PM

Is it just me or has the term "balanced budget" been removed from our dictionary? As the surplus shrinks we are getting closer to a balanced budget. This means that I am closer to be taxed at the rate necessary for the government to meet it's obligations. In other words, I'm not being overtaxed resulting in a surplus that Librano$$ would quickly make use of with their friends.

Are we going to start hearing that positive term from the pre-Trudeau years again?

The Liberals and their hacks in the media can talk about nothing but who and how soon the Libranos can get back to power and soppin' the gravy. There's no other concern in their world aside from trying to concoct pseudo scandals only to have them fizzle.

They can't even do a proper job of Official Opposition and they expect to be trusted to lead the Country? To hell with them, they need a very long time out to get their act together.

How about we discuss what color scarf Martha Hall Findlay wraps around her neck for her swearing in on Monday?

"Revere the leader."

It's a consensus. Agreed.
It's not the Hatfields vs the McCoys; it's not the Montagues vs the Capulets; it's an internecine blood feud between factions of the Ad$cam Party.
The Liberal blood feud is between Ad$cam Chretien and Ad$cam Martin, Jr.

The knives are not just ready; the knives are deep into the back of a hapless Citoyen Dion, NonRevered Leader.

I've spoken to a one-time Liberal executive who tells of many Liberals who have abandoned the current Liberal regime and are quietly rallying in the shadows behind future "superstars"...waiting for the current batch of losers to self-destruct. Too funny. The Libs may puff themselves up but they are hollow.

As for Tory_Watcher, government "revenue" is from taxes...therefore, when the "revenue" decreases it means we are paying less taxes, which is expected to happen when the government purposely reduces taxes. Yay! When the surplus decreases, that means the government is better at forecasting and managing their money than the previous governments. Again...yay! And you say you're involved in finances in some way?

Posted by: Eeyore at March 29, 2008 10:53 AM

Tory_Watcher is just frustrated because PM Harper has all but eliminated the life blood of Power Corp Librano$: Giving surpluses back to the people by reducing the debt/reducing federal taxes...If Ontario/Quebec/Maritimes or others wishes to continue with Trudopian social engineering then those Provinces have the option to continue voting in leftard governments and have them raise their taxes more locally...BTW: That IS Harper's hidden agenda and I love it!
