"Governments here -- behemoths whose budgets consume about a half the nation's $160 billion GDP -- are generally dysfunctional. They are hamstrung by constant internal squabbles and Byzantine bureaucracies. As became evident as early as the 1973 Yom Kippur War, their dysfunction has infected the Israeli defense establishment. In that year, a totally surprised Israeli cabinet and military leadership reacted with confusion and ineptness that almost led to the country's ruin. The recent Winograd Commission of Inquiry report on the Second Lebanon War indicates that these faults are endemic to the over-centralized yet disorganized Israeli system of governance.
...Israeli governments have done little to stop the massive rearmament of Hamas in Gaza with Iranian weapons, bought with Saudi money and transported into Gaza with the connivance of Egypt. Israel did not even press its great ally, the U.S., to lean on Egypt and put an end to this flagrant violation of its peace agreement with Israel -- a peace agreement for which Egypt is rewarded by billions in U.S. aid."

Posted by: muttsrus at March 9, 2008 10:50 AMAn amusing and plausible theory as to the "thinking" processese of liberals who, perhaps, don't so much suffer from a form of mental illness as a anthropological snydrome: envy appeasement/deflection.
WHY DEMOCRATS CANNOT DEFEND AMERICA
A good place to start understanding why Democrats cannot defend America is the Amazon jungle. There is a tribe in the Amazon called the Yanomamo. When a Yanomamo woman gives birth, she tearfully proclaims her child to be ugly.
In a loud mortified lament that the entire tribe can hear, she asks why the gods have cursed her with such a pathetically repulsive infant. She does this in order to ward off the envious black magic of the Evil Eye, the Mal Ojo, that would be directed at her by her fellow tribespeople if they thought she was happy and her baby was beautiful.
So she is afraid to be happy, because of the fear of being envied by her fellow villagers.
From now on, whenever you think of a Liberal Democrat, I want you to think of that Yanomamo woman in the Amazon. For it is that primitive jungle fear that makes a Liberal.

me no dhimmi - I'd be cautious of Yanomano tales; they aren't always reliable. But, the idea of angry spirits, particularly those of the recently dead, is common among some groups. It helps to enforce an important social value: sharing.
There's a well-known story of Richard Lee, an anthropologist with the Dobe !Kung in the Kalahari (the ! represents a 'clicking sound'). Their economy is based on sharing all hunted and gathered goods.
So, Lee decided to offer up a fat ox for a Xmas feast; they like fat meat. He went out, bought one, and showed them how fat it was, how good it would taste when roasted, etc.
They mocked him; they denigrated his inability to tell good from bad meat. Endless putdowns. Finally, Xmas day, the roast was ready and the meat was indeed, fat, juicy, perfect.
Lee asked them - but why did you mock me, you knew it was a good choice of meat, why did you make fun of me?
Answer: Arrogance. They had to reduce his arroagance in thinking he was better than anyone else.
You see, in their culture, with an economy based on the necessity of close bonds, relying on each other, sharing food - you cannot allow a situation to develop where one person thinks they are better, wiser, stronger than another. All are equal.

"MI5 targets four Met police officers 'working as Al Qaeda Spies,'" from the Daily Mail:
Four police officers in Britain's top force are reportedly under close secret service surveillance after being identified as Al Qaeda spies, it emerged today.
MI5 are said to have homed in on the the “sleeper” agents passing secrets from Scotland Yard to the terror group only in recent weeks.
The suspected spies are believed to have used methods similar to those employed by the IRA in the 1970s as they infiltrated the police and the Army in Northern Ireland.
All four are understood to be Asians living in London and are feared to have links both with Islamic extremists in Britain and worldwide terror groups - including al-Qaeda training camps in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
MI5 chiefs reportedly believe the suspected moles have been planted as sleepers - agents under deep cover - to keep al-Qaeda informed of anti-terror raids planned by London's Metropolitan Police.
They are said to fear the four could have already accessed sensitive information about secret operations to root out terror cells planning further attacks in the UK.

China foiled a bid to cause an air disaster on a passenger jet en route to Beijing and the plane made a safe emergency landing, an official said on Sunday, in what state media called an attempted terrorist attack.
The China Southern flight originated in Urumqi, capital of the restive far western Chinese region of Xinjiang, where militant Uighurs have agitated for an independent "East Turkestan"...
Xinjiang is home to 8 million Muslim Uighurs, many of whom resent the growing presence and economic grip of Han Chinese. The oil-rich region borders Pakistan, Afghanistan and Central Asia.
A senior Chinese official has warned that Uighurs -- a Turkic, largely Islamic people who share linguistic and cultural bonds with Central Asia -- were plotting attacks on the Beijing Olympics.

Clark A. Murdock, The Department of Defense and the Nuclear Mission of the 21st Century
Nuclear weapons are unique in their capacity to inflict massive amounts of damage almost instantaneously... In an era of suicide bombers, ideologically driven non-state actors will employ nuclear weapons if they can get them—al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden has said it was a “sacred duty” to seek nuclear weapons25—and the civilized world must do everything it can to prevent non-state actors from acquiring nuclear weapons, to disrupt or preempt any nuclear use by non-state actors and to deny non-state actors any benefits they may gain from their use of nuclear weapons. But the so-far-unbroken track record of successful nuclear deterrence in the affairs of nation-states will not be replicated against non-state nuclear threats. Not only do many non-state actors lack things of value that can be threatened by nuclear retaliation, some might actually invite nuclear attacks (in the case of deterrence failure) because that would serve their disruptive, messianic purposes...

Climatologist taking `perverse’ pleasure in brutal winter
Posted on 09 March 2008 by Jack('s Newswatch)
Note: Some background…
“Environment Canadas (a government department) senior climatologist, David Phillips is a global warming skeptic. Though many of his colleagues claim that mans warming of the planet leads to more destructive weather, Phillips says there is no proof of such a link. “The point Ive argued about with my colleagues is all the weather weve seen in recent history cant be blamed on global warming,” said Phillips. “There is no scientific evidence to suggest that the ice storm in Ontario last year or the Red River flood in Manitoba were direct results of what were doing to the atmosphere.”
Phillips doesnt discount the possibility that mans influence on the atmosphere may lead to more extreme weather, but the evidence doesnt show it. Phillips blames much of the erroneous perception on the advent of “storm porn,” the medias overreaction to natural disasters. The perception of more extreme weather, says Phillips, may have more to do with increasing media coverage than actual changes.
Phillips argues that population growth is blame for perceived increases in natural disasters. “Weathers doing a bigger number of people,” says Phillips. “That doesnt make the weather more extreme. Its just that were bigger targets now. Were getting in the way of the weather” (The Edmonton Sun, November 14, 1999).”

Doesn't this embody the Canadian Spirit: endless amounts of angst due to politically correct concerns, compulsive understatement, and indecisive micro-management due to overbearing authority?
Just a thought.
Posted by: just-a-thought at March 9, 2008 8:47 PMI watched a bit of Question Period today-- I don't usually, but I was at the gym and that was what was on. -- If there was ever anything to inspire me NEVER to choose to turn this program on at home today's episode was it. I felt it was a bit of end-to-end Conservative bashing. It's fine to criticize Conservatives, but to go on -- and on and on and on -- about items that have already passed their best-before date is a bit much. I thought the the interview regarding the Cadman issue was pathetic, primarily because -- there is nothing new here. It was a rehash of last week's news. It uninteresting and stale to just keep on about things (as Tabor did) when there is no new information. What exactly is the point? Well, I guess Conservative bashing is the point -- I understand -- and accept -- that this is an item that Liberals would latch on to and not let go, but media should be a bit more saavy about what kinds of things are likely to catch the interest of the general public. (Unfortunately, this might take a bit of effort on the journalists' part.) Endless repetition of non-events is not going to do it. They've lost me.
