It seems like just yesterday that we stayed glued to the television sets as the permanent evacuation of Manhattan unfolded on the cable news networks...
An imminent scenario of catastrophic climate change is 'plausible and would challenge United States national security in ways that should be considered immediately', they conclude. As early as next year widespread flooding by a rise in sea levels will create major upheaval for millions.

Posted by: Western Canadian at February 25, 2008 3:49 PMthe wife was readin' an article in The Sun newspaper a weekend back bout how the Antarctic had risen 0.2 deg C (water or air temp not sure) and that caused a 2 mm(?) rise in ocean water level.
Sounds like settled science.
better buy a life raft, just in case. 3499 feet to go to get us!
Posted by: puddin and pie at February 25, 2008 3:57 PMSo which paper has a larger circulation now, the Guardian or the National Enquirer? Is there a difference anymore?

Posted by: puddin and pie at February 25, 2008 4:31 PMYes, but do they contain anything worth reading anymore?
But at least now I understand that one Simpson cartoon.
Posted by: otter at February 25, 2008 4:39 PMWhat, it isn't going to flood? Darn. Manhattan under water would be an improvement IMHO. The place is a dump.

I tell you now, Kate will forced into a burka long before even Floria has a high water problem.
Our major problem is Islam not a freaking thermometer.
That kind of fear mongering is criminal.

Posted by: Jim at February 25, 2008 5:32 PM'Already, according to Randall and Schwartz, the planet is carrying a higher population than it can sustain.'
Well then, they definitely need to weaken the western democracies, starting with the USA, so they won't be strong enough to stop the new left wing world order that has time tested solutions for surplus population.
Artificially induced famines have been repeatedly proven by 'socialists' to quickly remove tens of millions within a single season. Vast networks of slave labour starvation camps have also been a 'socialist' standard in the 20th century. Then there's making the people so miserable, and the family unit so terrorized and weak, that the population reduces its breeding levels.
A big problem is the USA, which can, and will, quickly and efficiently mobilize humanitarian relief and is also known to, on occasion, intervene militarily to prevent 'socialist' government mass murder from spreading to other countries.
And now Dr. Asshat Suzuki is calling for a national carbon tax that he says should be revenue neutral with compensation back to the taxpayer by way of income tax reductions. Smoke and freekin mirrors. What a giant phoney. In the interview where he called for this tax he was very vague on details claiming that he was not an economist. Got news for you Suzuki - you're no environmental expert either.

We have the food . . .
"
Hunger, Sheeran says, is now "affecting a wide range of countries", including Indonesia, Yemen and Mexico. Thus, the WFP, which normally provides aid in areas where food was unavailable is finding itself asked to help countries where the price of food, rather than shortages, is the problem.
Across the world, there are disturbing signs that the shortage is biting. In Egypt – which has had limited rationing for some time – the food rationing system for the first time in two decades. Pakistan has reintroduced a ration card system that was abandoned in the mid-1980s. Countries such as China and Russia are imposing price controls while others, such as Argentina and Vietnam, are enforcing foreign sales taxes or export bans. Importing countries are lowering their tariffs."

Oh ya. Price controls = shortages. Wasn't that Nixon that tried that. Best damn years for commodity traders........ well in a really loooong time.

We don't have the food. It is being used as fuel.. (Ethanol production using food.) The new question of course is "How many meals per gallon." do you get in that vehicle.

I will consider beginning to worry when I see Fox & Friends leaving their Manhattan ground-floor studio one morning to head for higher ground.
While I am waiting I will spend my time pondering more pressing items, such as how to persuade the instructors of jihadist suicide bombers to give their students realistic "show and tell' classes.
Posted by: Yoop at February 25, 2008 11:29 PMYou make a good point, Yoop: One only has to watch the morning news shows out of NY. Shouldn't there be waves breaking against those windows, instead of people walking by?
And now, with the IPCC downgrading the threat, the sea level ought to get that high around..... 3000 AD.
IF agw were real.
Posted by: otter at February 26, 2008 7:26 AMIf this is the same story that I recall a number of years ago, it is really a non-issue. The planning branch of the US military plans for many possible events (including invading Canada) but if they didn;t they would be negligent. The fact that they have a plan to react to consequences of global warming is neither here or there in the overall issue.
