Japan demonstrates how to deal with a convicted terrorist:
Rejecting his appeal, the Supreme Court on Friday finalized the death sentence of senior Aum Shinrikyo cultist Yasuo Hayashi, a key figure in the deadly 1995 sarin gas attack on Tokyo's subway system. It's too bad it has taken more than a decade, but at least he will finally get what he deserves. Posted by Jaeger at February 15, 2008 8:19 PM
every LLLiberal convention i ask myself..."where's a Jap with Sarin gas when you DO need him."
i'm only having fun of course...talking like a fool to myself...but you see my point.
Posted by: john begley at February 15, 2008 8:32 PMOne interesting aspect I've heard about Japanese death row, is the convicts don't get a lot of warning - maybe a day tops - of when the sentence will be carried out. They can be there for just days or many years.
Posted by: MikeM at February 15, 2008 8:42 PMWhat, no Canadian politicians have protested this yet!? You're slipping, lads.
Posted by: dmorris at February 15, 2008 8:45 PMCorrection: According to a Wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capital_punishment_in_Japan), once the appeal process is exhausted, the sentence is supposed to be carried out within six months. The condemned is informed on the morning of the execution. The outside world is told afterwards.
Personally, I see a lot of positives to that system.
Posted by: MikeM at February 15, 2008 8:51 PMHas Kinsella condemned it yet? ... along with a picture of a pen drawn swastika and the claim that Kate is running Japan's legal system ;)

if there were real justice in this world... they'd half kill
and revive him 11 times, then let him go on
number 12... once for each of his victims.

Posted by: neo at February 15, 2008 10:36 PMI've been thinking lately that for terrorists convicted and sentenced to death, say that half-dozen in Gitmo, the method of execution should be crucifixion, literally.
Posted by: CMP at February 15, 2008 10:40 PMHurray for the Japs. Perhaps we can learn something from this.
Posted by: CanuckInMI at February 15, 2008 10:59 PMCanuckinMI -- indeed, tho in present Canada he would be out in 2 yrs and not be a threat.
Posted by: gobi desert at February 16, 2008 1:10 AMNow that is what I call "social justice"!
If that is what bombardion and taliban jackoff have in mind, I am all for it!

In other words you think "real justice" equals "revenge" or "retribution" measured in terms of pain. In other words, you favour not removing a threat to life from society but rather you favour torture and attempts to terrorize those who might use symbolic attacks that can't overthrow a state but only create fear. In other words, you're just another terrorist, "Neo".
And the other one says:
"I've been thinking lately that for terrorists convicted and sentenced to death, say that half-dozen in Gitmo, the method of execution should be crucifixion, literally."
Nice. Call Harper and give him this idea. Maybe he'll change Christmas so you don't recognize it. We all know which side of that one Harper'd have been on. He wouldn't have washed his hands, either, he'd have gone to the religious believers and shown them the blood and they'd have cheered.
Rather amazing to see people allied with the so-called Christian right advocating crucifixion. I guess they want to create martyrs and therefore more opportunities to "crack down" on whoever is the threat this week.
It should be fairly obvious to any actual person engaged in "thinking" that the ritual spectacle of a state murder of a human being is not a way of making anyone safer. Rather, it's a way of demonstrating the power of the state to kill - or to torture, per the methods outlined above.
At least in China it's quick - bullet to the head.
They have the excuse of being colonized by Europe 100 years ago, being invaded and genocided by Japan 70 years ago, suffering a civil war 60 years ago, then a declining dictatorship and "Cultural Revolution" 40 years ago, struggling to create a modern industrial state accomodating a billion people moving from rural to urban areas in 50 years, and other political, industrial and social upheavals that make Japan's or Canada's problems look very trivial. And with all that they don't see fit to waste state resources and credibility on torture as a form of entertainment and ideological display. You can say a lot of bad things about China but not that.
Poor countries can also be forgiven abbreviated judicial processes on the grounds of others not receiving justice as a result. This is not an excuse in Japan or Canada. In these countries, killing politically or religious motivated figures, even total nutjobs, sends the message that the system is weak and profoundly threatened by them. Doing so with methods that will create horror and sympathy would send that message even more strongly to any potential sympathizers. The US made a mistake executing Timothy McVeigh, for instance. It should have kept him alive and in good health in the hopes that he might talk more, and more discredit the movement he supported and become a useful icon of reform, regret, penance.
In Yemen and Saudi they've had no real problems re-engaging former supporters of Al Qaida in what amounts to minimum security prisons that operate more like group homes with resident psychologists.
Most "terrorists" are no more sophisticated than these. They're just told a bunch of stories that make them mad, and told other people are the enemy. They're a lot like ordinary Conservative Party of Canada members. In fact exactly like them. Same definition of "thinking" for instance: mindless feelings motivated by hatred and fear and revulsion for all that is not them.
And easily fixed if you can actually talk to them.

Perhaps because in Yemen and Saudi, the Al Qaeda terrorists are really just doing the Wahabbi's work for them, and just got a little carried away, that's all. Pop them into the re-training camps so they can properly direct their efforts at infidels.
It's remedial training for jihadis, not de-programming. Only way to deprogram them is a course of hot lead injections.

They were trying to find his links with Islam. I mean, we all know that terrorism doesnt exist without those kinds of links, right?

Because we all know Canadian Conservatives behead people with whom they disagree.
