Well you do now, because someone out there has way too much time on his hands.
Gawd. I need to get a life, I'm in the top 10!

Posted by: cal2 at February 6, 2008 10:43 AMOf course you all realize that our resident IT wizard is more concerned with quantity that quality.
The proof lies in the fact that I never made the list, lol.
But seriously, this is without doubt the most interesting site, all due to the quality of postings by the Hostess, and the quality of the commenters.
Thanks for the effort, Vitruvius.
I must say that, on the one hand, I was rather surprised to find myself in the top 100 of posters here at SDA. I have considered myself more of a lurker here until somewhat recently, having been better known at the Shotgun. On the other hand, I suppose I have been posting here more frequently in consideration of the recent changes going on at the Shotgun - and your software has quantitatively identified my change.
Now, I would like to ask you a question. I think I understand software and math enough to understand how you generated most of your table - most of it certainly would require at least a small amount of labour but would be considered technically trivial for someone such as yourself who writes software. The question centres around the times. You posted your table on Feb 4, yet your table states that it covers the time span until Feb 6. What algorithm did you use for the predictive part of the software? :)
Just a post to boost my count for the next time Vitruvius runs the algorithm. :)
#98 out of 1200 so that puts me at in the top 8.16% percentile.
Oh man I just missed my A+ grade!
But you know it is better to blog as a "Small Dead Animal" rather than to be one.
Apparently I am not verbose enough, so I should take some lessons in saying something meaningful, but take a lot longer in getting there.
There have been many who have tried making various family members become part of the "Roadkill Diaries"; so far all comers have been unsuccessful in this regard.
But the reason Gordy Howe came from Saskatchewan was you could always count on the weather to freeze the horse manure enough to make a hockey puck for the frozen slough ice rink.
Winter is not over all AGW fans so keep your stick on the ice and watch the elbows!

Not a bad place to be :)
Posted by: Doug at February 6, 2008 11:04 AMSince some of your celebrity commenters have posted under roughly 1,453 different aliases, these statistics leave some of us out of the party.
I'm crushed, but I'll soldier on.

I really thought ET had the lengthiest posts. C'mon Vit....this only covers January...How 'bout the whole picture??
lol
There is an urgent need to quantify punditry and sombody is going to make a nice fortune by writing software that addresses this problem.
I should be able to wave my cursor over the name of a pundit, blogger, or blog commentor and have a pop up window appear apprising me of the nature and value of this individual's commentary.
"apprising me of the nature and value of this individual's commentary."
As well as how many times they've threatened to take legal action in the blogosphere.

You need to learn from what you read at sda. Change your name to a more PC native designator, claim some land, and then open a casino. ;-)
never mind all that clabber...the question of the day is WHERE IS RICHARD WARMAN ?.........could someone ask the claquista Kinsella if he knows where "Lucy' has gone to ground ?

Posted by: Jim at February 6, 2008 11:39 AMActually I picked the handle "Eskimo" and have been waiting to launch a phoney campaign of flinging racial slurs and unsustantiated generalities against those people represented by my namesake. Once I've collected enough "proof" that there are SDA contributors with racist tendancies to "agree with me", I've instructed my realtor to start looking for something beachfront in Santo Domingo while the Alberta HRC considers my case.
Failing this, the casino thing might work too...thanks for the tip.
Posted by: Eskimo at February 6, 2008 11:41 AMVitruvius,
Now do the impossible (assumed impossible; you probably will figure a way) and tell us the geographic distribution of the commentors. There may be more from south of the border than even suspected.
(That may be an interesting and illuminating thread to go with the occupation stats; geographic distribution of posters. Might be another reason why sda stands out so far above the norm.)
Posted by: Yoop at February 6, 2008 11:43 AMI didn't make the list?
Do you tink it is izzy to comment on every post? It's just not fair. :)
Hey, I'm on there, too! :)
Posted by: Canadian Sentinel at February 6, 2008 11:49 AMThanks for doing this Vitruvius. I was a bit surprised to find myself on the list as I was trying to cut down the amount of time I spent on SDA this year. Now what would be really nice would be to get this table in text format as I'm curious if plotting log(total_length) vs index number gives a straight line or not. I could write a program to extract the data from the html table but I don't have that much time.
What an interesting "breakdown" :)

Woe is me. I am a but a fading evening shadow compared to others grandiloquence, loquacity, facundity. (that'll get my byte rate up)

Screen printed or Embroidered?
How about a hairshirt line made from SDA?
Posted by: nomdeblog at February 6, 2008 12:18 PMHey, you are the artist Kate. I am sure you can come up with some interesting stuff for t-shirts. Interesting looking at the stats. It seems that some of the best posters make them seem like they comment more than they do -- Kathy Shaidle and Mississauga Matt come to mind, but I am sure everyone has favorites. Thanks Vit.. and thanks for the music links too.

Suggestions?
"Do you sda... eh?"
"Yah But... this is SDA"
"small dead animals...what's for breakfast."
"Never, ever underestimate the power of a small dead animal"
I'm torn between the obvious need to do something else with my spare time and the competitive urge .... !!
Naw..... keep making SDA work! Thanks Kate.
Good post Vitruvius.
Now can you distinguish and single out for Kate's readers the number of MSM / journalist visits?
And Kate, how about a commentors poll of which entity is next for SDA to take down or discredit, the CBC, the HRC, Canadian Press, or Richard Warman the HRC big hitter or Taliban Jack.
That would be really interesting.
T-shirts?
Great idea. Your top-of-page logo should go on the first series...
I'll buy one!
Posted by: Mad Mike at February 6, 2008 1:02 PMSDA T-shirts?
Hey, I got a better idea... how about a Kate action figure? :)
Now, that's better than a Barbie Doll!
I can see it now: A Kate With Yamaha and Leather Outfit, a Kate Blogging Playset, a Kate Painting Stuff Playset, a Kate Training Doggies Playset, and, best of all, a playset in which Kate kicks the asses of Left-wing action figures like Warren Kinsella...
Ok, maybe I'm being a little silly, but, hey, nothing wrong with brainstorming...

Do you need more work Kate??

I am SO competitive.
On the subject of t-shirts, I would probably buy one but I would absolutely buy one if the choice of a ladies v-neck was offered. I know ... that's just being greedy. Can't hurt to try!
Posted by: meesh at February 6, 2008 2:08 PMForget the moribund gopher logo, guys. To really drive sales, I recommend the photo of Kate repacking her muffler. "Is it scorching hot out here, or is it just your T-shirt?"
Posted by: Charles MacDonald at February 6, 2008 2:55 PMSpeaking as a member of the Top Ten, I'll have one of those shirts. If it says "Top Ten Poster" on it I'll have two. ~:D It'll make a nice change from my Canadian Warplane Heritage wardrobe.

Posted by: Orlin at February 6, 2008 4:07 PMIt would appear that my original judgment when I called these statistics a shiny new thing yesterday ~ tinyurl.com/2ul9ve ~ was correct, as I've had almost 1,000 new visitors from Kate's link so far today. Contrary to Kate's humerous assertion, it didn't take much time to write the program that produces these statistics, as I mentioned in the Reader Tips earlier today ~ tinyurl.com/2d9mef ~ I've probably only spent about six hours fiddling around with it. And let's face it, man does not live off of reading Policy Review magazine alone ;-)
Brent ~ The Feb 4 date is the date the Blogspot page was created. I uploaded the Feb 6 data into the same page, thus the two dates. Yoop ~ I can't do geography because I don't have access to the IP addresses from the server logs. I'm just scraping the same data y'all can see when you View + Page Source.
I should probably note that the Average Length column isn't very interesting data, as someone who posts only two long posts gets in there, even if they don't otherwise post. I think I'm going to toast that column in the next version and show the average and standard deviation in every row in the other two columns.
Bluetech notes that there's only about six weeks of data there. I could go back further, but who really cares what the stats were a year ago? We'll see, maybe if I think of something cool to do with that data (like some colourful multiple-curve cartesian plots with at least one log axis ;-)
One of the interesting things I can do now that I have the scraped comments is make a page like the following, containing all my SDA comments, and those related to me, so far this year:
sagaciousiconoclast.blogspot.com/2008/02/vitruviuss-sda-comments.html
What I'm probably going to do next is scrape all the threads I've ever commented in (I've kept bookmarks to them all), so I can then do a full-text search by commenter and content, for example, show me all the comments relating to Kate and Vitruvius that mention "pub" or "bouncer". Now that would be a cool tool to make available, at least for those who aren't trying to hide from their earlier comments ;-)
Kate ~ once I've had a little more time to clean up the program, I can send you a copy if you like, and if you have Perl or get it, you can automatically have the Top 100 report run at, say, midnight every day, and then provide a link on the main page.
Suggestions are always welcome.
Posted by: Vitruvius at February 6, 2008 5:37 PMThe program reports correctly per the Names you have used.
If you pretend to be multiple people, you're tallied as such.
I for one feel it's an honour just to get nominated, I made the list. I think.
Posted by: Rose at February 6, 2008 7:25 PMVit, hopefully those numbers are proportionally represented in Kate’s tip jar.

I really wasn't expecting much of a response. I had surmised as much but simply put that predictive point in there as a teaser - you probably noticed the little similey I added.
Now, on a more serious note and if you are taking suggestions (er, requirements) seriously, your mods for v2.0 make sense - but you might want to consider using the median rather than the mean. As the number of posts approaches infinity or if a poster always posts a similar size contribution these will be the same. However, for most of us, the median more accurately reflects what I think you are looking for.
Anyway, thanks for the response and looking forward to V2.0.
similey --> smiley
Posted by: Brent Weston at February 6, 2008 9:35 PMI was thinking that too, Brent. I'll check out
median & mean, and see what looks interesting.
I didn't make the list either. Too much lurking, not enough commenting. Anyway, if the Liberano's get "back to Power, as soon as possible," as their esteemed leader stated at their convention, guess who the first 100 people audited by Revenue

Kate; Since I didn't make the list can you make me a "Lurker" T shirt?
Posted by: rebarbarian at February 6, 2008 10:09 PMOy. Well, I captured my bookmarked pages as I mentioned above. The format of Kate's pages changed in late May, 2006, and I have not yet written code to scrape before that, so the following data is since 2006-05-29. Since then I have participated in commenting on 454 articles, posting 1,407 comments, of 1.3 MB total length. I've written 1.3 MB here in under two years ~ I wouldn't have believed it. According to Print Preview, that's 320 pages. And if I include the 681 comments that reference some version of Vitruvius, totaling 665 kB, that's 488 printed pages all in.
Wow. And I'm only 12'th on the list. I think I'll print those 488 pages to a PDF on a CD and take it to Office Depot for a hard copy. It's under fifty bucks. Maybe somebody will appreciate it in 100 years if the digital archives are no longer available.
Because as George Bernard Shaw once sagely noted:
I often quote myself. It adds spice to my conversation.
