Old soldiers never die, they just open up a big ol' can of whupass on painfully ignorant Liberals:
After 36 years wearing her majesty's uniform, I am well aware that political direction, no matter how impossible or ridiculous, has to be obeyed - except in the rare circumstances when the order is illegal. Regrettably, in Canada, we have a dearth of any kind of military experience represented in Parliament in general and in the Liberal Party in particular.Liberal leader Stéphane Dion's latest opinion on Canada's future in Afghanistan calls for us "remaining engaged" in Afghanistan with roles including "training, protection of civilians and reconstruction."
The last time I received an order regarding the "protection of civilians" was in 1992 when the UN Security Council, as is its habit, came up with its usual lowest-common-denominator direction and told the United Nation's Protection Force in Croatia to "protect civilians" without engaging in combat.
After shaking our collective heads at the idiocy of the order, we came up with a scheme to place our troops in badly sited defensive positions around the civilian concentrations so that anyone attacking them would have to pass through our positions and we could, therefore, use deadly force in our own self-defence.
In other words, rather than taking the initiative to defeat the threat to the civilians, we were forced to put our soldiers at increased risk to life and limb to appease the sensibilities of the Security Council. Any of our units given the task of protecting civilians in Afghanistan, having abandoned their "combat emphasis," would face the same dilemma.
And that's just the beginning.
Posted by Damian at January 18, 2008 4:46 PMThat's right....just leave it to America to do the dirty work. And she does it and takes abuse around the world with a smile while Canada struts around in her shadow screaming how much better it is.
So Dallaire is touted as a hero, proves that we no longer like winners, but rather losers.

on the other hand... some rare good news for the canadian military.

Posted by: neo at January 18, 2008 5:25 PMIf y'all are interested, my take on Dion is here:
http://thecanadiansentinel.blogspot.com/2008/01/stephane-dion-wants-to-invade-pakistan.html
I'd like to add that as Dion said his gaffe in French, his language of mastery, not in English, the language he appears to refuse to try to master. Therefore, this particular gaffe isn't a language-related gaffe, but rather a sign that his supposed great intellect is really a myth...
Posted by: The Canadian Sentinel at January 18, 2008 6:49 PMMr. Sentinal, I agree with you sentiments entirely. But, I wish to offer a few observations.
Yes, Dijon is detached from reality. Like all paid-up members of the "liberal" party, the whole of reality is simply there to be molded to their own image, for electoral purposes.
Yes, he did say we should withdraw via Pakistan. Actually, this isn't such a stupid observation, but it isn't based upon any assessment of possibility, unfortunately. Also, he later recanted; he didn't mean it that way. He meant it in a diplomatic way. I actually suspect that dijon maybe actually learnt something on his adventure holiday, but cannot mention that in the "liberal" party.
Yes, our troops are his political play-things. He wants them to pose for him, the poseur; do all sorts of touchy-feely things (while not getting killed) and not actually like, you know, shooting or killing anyone.
I could go on, but dijon isn't worth my precious time.
For "liberals", the armed forces are only there for show.
I like Lewis Mackenzie he's got the jam to tell it like it is.
I recall his opinion of the ill-fated Iltis being described somewhat unceremoniously as a 'piece of shit' in its ability to protect the troops in the field from land mines and the like.
Another great LIEberal invention concocted by VW and "BOMB"ardier.
When it comes to the 'life, liberty and the security' the Liberals don't even make the list after the lastest 'invade Pakistan' nonsense by Mr. Dion.
Cheers

It's quite simple:
Stéphane Dion is a cretin
The individuals (I won't dignify them with the name "people") who voted for him are cretins.
Then again, leftards in general are cretins, no matter how many PhDs they have....
Leftards are against liberty, freedom of speech and self-determination.
I no longer argue anything with leftards on the basis that arguing with cockroaches is useless.
I'll gladly stomp them with my GhG emitting SUV.
Take me to the HRC, leftards. Go for it.
considering our fine land has benefited from the wisdom of Liberal govts for most of it's years, we need not concern ourselves with the partisan mumblings of retired soldiers.
soldiers follow orders, they don't direct policy. never forget it.

Mackenzie deserves better than your "partisan mumblings" comments. Just as easy to say that the "wisdom" bit is just a partisan mumbling about the Liberal party. There is lots precedence that retired generals comment on defense issues in democracies, and lots of reason to be critical of Liberal party defense policy. Mackenzie is sharp operator and is useful voice in this debate. He is clearly informed on the issue in a way that Dion is not.
Posted by: gray at January 18, 2008 9:25 PMJeffy, stop sniffing the glue...
"wisdom of Liberal govts"... frigging hilarious
The next time Liberals show some wisdom will be the first time.
The 85 year old retired corporal from WW2 has wiser mumblings than the entire Liberal caucus put together, and certainly a greater justification for living than Jeffy does. Jeffy is an oxygen thief
Posted by: Anon at January 18, 2008 9:26 PMHey leftard moron.
1. Our fine land has benefited because of the raping and pillaging of our natural resources.
2. your wonderfully corrupt librano regimes have purposely endangered the lives of our soldiers by sending them to third world rat holes with substandard equipment.
3. If cretin and mr dithers would have listened to the "partisan mumblings of retired soldiers", the body count in Afghani would be a lot lower.
So, leftard troll boy, watch what you say about these old soldiers. They might come in handy as you are about to get your moonbat head removed by some sharia screaming whackjob, you arsehole!

""""soldiers follow orders, they don't direct policy. never forget it.""""""
problem is Lieberals change their "policies" quicker than a woman like you changers their mind, so soldiers lives are needlessly endangered and lost due to leftist stupidity
try reading up on vietman and democrap "policy", and understand that many of the 60K need not have been lost

"jeffy crows... the wisdom of Liberal govts..."
hey, bugboy... you gonna be signing up when field marshall dion
launches his invasion of pakistan.

Posted by: missing link at January 18, 2008 11:10 PMI don't think Romeo Dallaire is a loser - he is a very brave man who was put in an impossible situation. I don't agree with a lot of his opinions, but he was one of the few who cared about what happened to Africans.

The Nuremberg Trials did not provide cover for those in a command position that blindly followed Orders that resulted in an affront to humanity.
Dalliare could have resigned his command or Canada could have withdrawn their UN commitment but he was left to standby and watch.
Dalliare has never once criticized Canada for putting him in that position, Canada took on a task that they knew they could not complete. He has blamed the US for not providing troops (to operate under his Command) The Canadian Government made a serious miscalculation.
Black hawk down was a US miscalculation, shame on the UN. How stupid do you think the American Military would be to ever get involved with the UN in that time frame.
Yes Dalliare was between a rock & a hard place
but it was CANADA that put him there.
Why do you people insist on answering Jeff's posts? You must know that is what he wants. He craves the attention, even if it is negative. "They're talking about me. I must be important. Hey look at me everyone"
Just let him sit at the kids table where he belongs.
Posted by: Largs at January 19, 2008 7:22 AMLargs, you are absolutely correct and this is what Kate demands of us. However, some comments are so egregious as to almost demand a response. On the basis that bugboy does not contribute a single iota of intelligence or valid observation nor even ATTEMPTS to be anything but negative and disruptive, I respectfully repeat my fervent plea to Kate that he be restricted from commenting here (Kate willing, PBUH).

eeyore...disagree with your request. It is only by allowing him/her/it to post here that the rest of us can see the inanity/stupidity/socialistic retardness of the left. The more they post their rambamlings, the more we can see how useless and dangerous they are,and thus can fight them, not that its much of fight to blast stupidity...heh
And don't forget...it is their right to say such stupidity, unless you prove them wrong, then HRC for you!Hypocrites need to be exposed, often, constantly, and forever.
While watching Dion photo opping with a couple of soldiers, I thought, man a couple of large firecrackers going off would have been hilarious. Steffi diving into the arms of the very soldier he dispises. Correct me if I am wrong, did Harper ever go on a foreign affairs gambit to undermine the Gov of the day ? I dont think so.
2. your wonderfully corrupt librano regimes have purposely endangered the lives of our soldiers by sending them to third world rat holes with substandard equipment."
jeepers kingston, do you mean like how the present CONSERVATISTS are doing this also? and have followed suit any time they are in power? why dont they initiate a massive upgrade of the canadian military budget and equipment WHILE THEY ARE IN POWER AND HAVE THE CHANCE.
uuuuuh because that necessitates parting with their precious surplus/raising taxes/whatever unpopular move?
regardless of what 'branch' of the canadian political evolutionary tree theyre on, they still come from the same common political ancestor, a self serving corrupt to the core thug. same as lieberals, same as new democraps same as refoooooorm same as single issue jackdaws and any other flavour of the week.
when are you righties going to give up on the hero worship?
nom de plume,
Have you been paying attention? The Conservatives have been re-investing in the CF in a serious way. The ability of the CF to absorb the investment becomes an issue when the CF has been accustomed to fixing things with gun-tape and bailing wire. It is shocking to see new kit sometimes. You will also note that the institution is stretched thin with the pace of operations. At least we are putting most of our "eggs" in one basket (Afghanistan). The Liberals loved to send our soldiers in 23 directions at once without any real political support.
If you had a clue about how government worked in general, you would realize that the Conservatives have pretty much moved heaven and earth to get a project to deliver needed equipment in less than 20 years. (Sometimes on the order of a few months - new tanks anyone?)
Oh my, sole sourcing and lack of pork barrelling to get the troops what is required to do the job we have asked of them. The Opposition will continue to whine about this lack of openness - while the government literally saves lives with rapid purchases of combat proven kit. We should buy American!
