Motion to Protect Religious Speech Defeated in UK Gay Hate Crimes Bill
The Labour-controlled British Parliament has rejected a motion that would have afforded Christians and other conscientious objectors legal protection from accusations of hate crimes by homosexual activists.
The Labour party refused to allow its majority MP's the freedom to vote on the amendment. The hate crimes bill moved through its final stages in the House of Commons on January 9.
The proposed "gay hate crimes" law would carry a maximum penalty of seven years in jail for anyone convicted of "inciting hatred" against homosexuals.
The motion to amend was introduced by Jim Dobbin, the Labour MP for Heywood and Middleton, who warned that some Catholic and Anglican leaders believed the proposed law would make it impossible to teach or preach Christian moral doctrine on sexuality and marriage without incurring criminal penalties.

It is becoming more and more, a police state. Unfortunately one that is welcomed by a frightening percentage of "sheeple".
So many people just believe what they are told and do not seem to either have or want the ability to examine the data and arrive at their own conclusions.
I have friends that will not hear or even allow to be discussed, anything that indicates that Islam is going to be a problem for North America. Facts have nothing to do with it and that is the scarey part. It's like the conspiracy theorists. Facts just plain do not matter.
Strange Brew.

If one disagrees with gays what is wrong with saying so?
This hardly prevents gays from swinging from the chandelier if they choose to do so.
I would probably tell the 'hate crime' police to respectfully go to hell.
If my grandfather as a Luftwaffe officer could tell his National Socialist superiors that they were 'Schweinehunde' I wouldn't hesitate to verbally make short work of these 'thought police'. After all its a family tradition!
Too many bureaucratic tinkerers with some other great social experiment to conduct. I believe the english expression "Sod off" still has some currency.

Posted by: Hans Rupprecht at January 17, 2008 2:53 AMSober is 100% correct. We could see Ezra Levant AND Mark Steyn in jail by this time next year, easy. Chucked in the slammer for having an opinion that differs from the official party line.
This is where the grindstone really starts to bite. The forces of oppression have got themselves into a position where they feel confident enough to start jailing people for their political views (read Conservative political views)then this lovely surveillance network is going to start earning its money.

Bugger!
Posted by: Wimpy Canadian at January 17, 2008 8:46 AMIt is really not wise to joke about this kind of state sanctioned absurdity in the UK...it's coming here too....remember we have 2 major Canadian journalists under attack for speech and thought crimes and a major publication under attack for the crime of exercising a charter right.
The real question that has to be asked by society is :
A)When did human rights become a right of the state to repress, damage and censor over hurt feelings...are bruised feelings worth the destruction this does to free society?
B) WHY do our legislators and judiciary support this capricious tyranny? What is in it for them? What is it about a repressed society living in constant fear over what they say which thrills politicians, bureaucrats and jurocrats so much they leave these damaging unamended speech crime and thought crime laws on the books?

Posted by: Orlin at January 17, 2008 9:10 AMOne wonders, when this ultimate of pc utopia is upon us, who will be afforded the hate speech rights, the homosexuals or the muslims.
Seeing it in Holland right now. A rash of murders - all gay men - committed by muslims. We all know muslims hate gays and jews.... when they rule, will gays get to take muslims to the HRC for hate speech? Not a chance - gays will be back in the closet, even more afraid to come out than they were 10 years ago.
Posted by: annie at January 17, 2008 9:26 AMThe high profile gay activists will be the first to get that late night call.
The question remains will it be stoning or beheading?
A "homophobic incidents register". Wow. One wonders if Canada has such a covert list.

Posted by: Friend of USA at January 17, 2008 10:53 AMWL Mac asks "When did human rights become a right of the state to repress, damage and censor over hurt feelings..."
That's easy WL, it was planned that way from the moment they decided to do it. Remember whose brain child this religious hate speech crap was? Bill C-250, the NDPee's very own Svendy Robinson! You think Spendy Svendy had the rights of Canadians in mind? Nuh uh, he had in mind a big friggin' stick to smash conservative speech with, yep you betcha.
The original hate speech laws were passed to silence Slim Jim Keegstra and Ernsty Zundel, nassstiest pair of Nazis this side of the Third Reich. I remember at the time many people thought this was a Very Bad Idea, which of course has turned out to be the case. Oddly I can't find who passed that original legislation, seems to have been thrown down the memory hole.
What makes it a bad idea is not that Jimmy and Ernsty are silenced, it is that other, "normal" people will get caught in the gears along with them. It is obvious to any thinking individual that the social cost of putting up with the likes of Ernst Zundel are considerably less that the cost of having a Ministry of Speech.
WL Mac asks:"WHY do our legislators and judiciary support this capricious tyranny? What is in it for them?"
Rhetorical question I know WL, but let's have a go. They get POWER, obviously. They want to -run- the Ministry of Speech and use it to shut people up who speak against them.
The people who are pushing this concept can't afford to let their true purposes and ideas be debated in an open forum, because they know they will lose that debate. Socialism is anti-freedom and anti-common sense, one a person looks at them from a practical point of view they laugh and become Conservatives. Recent evidence from the conservative internet kicking MSM liberal ass is all the proof you need.
So this farmer guy getting chucked in jail for being a pro-hunting Countryside Conservative was absolutely inevitable. It was the whole point of the whole affair from the word go.
Socialists can't win unless they can stick a gun in your face. This is the beginning of them doing precisely that. We are going to see a bunch more of it if we elect Liberals, Greens, the Bloc or (shudder) the NDPee.

Mark if you want a real shock look at the justice department regulations and guidelines given to police which can make you a "person of interest" to police these days.

Posted by: WL Mackenzie Redux at January 17, 2008 11:06 AMThe time will come when the Islamic ideology and their so-called prophet is put on trial. At that point, they will have no defence. Their trilogy (Quran, Hadith and Sira), as well as shariah law are full of hate and commands and rewards for violence against all non-Muslims and the repression of women.
The distinctly Islamic practice of taqiyya and kitman will further erode their credibility.
In this case (unlike Ezra), the incitement for hatred and violence is historically proven with mountains of evidence. It is after all, their scripture.
Many people fear the facts, they'd prefer to believe the ficticious and ubiquitous claim that Islam is a 'religion of peace.'
But modern communications have exposed their achilles heel like never before. And terrorism, hate fests, excessive birth rates, misogyny, legal jihad and self imposed separation from the host culture are the proof. The hissing snakes of Islam are working frantically to prevent further exposure. Using our laws and the multiculti doctrine of surrender against us.
However, the more people investigate the ideology, with honest, open and public criticism and debate; and the more Muslim extremists continue to commit terrorist attacks - the more likely the majority will come around.
They will have no choice. Survival depends on it.

I'd bet a lot of money some of us are already on some kind of watch list for our conservative opinions.
The HRC is already using "spies" to go on blogs
( read about it at Five Feet of Fury ) so a homophobic AND a Islamophobic watch list must exist.
The internet is the easiest thing to monitor.
there is no need for human intervention,
some " magic words" raise flags.
Consider this,
Social commentators Dr. David Yeagley and Amil Imani had their MSN Hotmail accounts terminated for criticizing Islam.
( excerpt from "The race for the American mind"

Want more of this insanity?

Posted by: Warwick at January 17, 2008 12:06 PMRobert Spencer on the problem:
"This isn’t an Islamic problem. This is a jihadist problem," said Mike Huckabee recently. Rudolph Giuliani spoke of “the way they’ve perverted their religion into a hatred of us.” In that, both men are reflecting the conventional wisdom -- conventional wisdom which, if you dare to transgress, you become a pariah. Everyone, you see, knows that whatever it is we're facing around the world today, it has nothing to do with Islam. If you don't see that, you're just a bigoted "Islamophobe."
------------------
If someone astutely states: "It's the ideology, stupid."
It's always followed by the brain dead choir, usually led by a shrill soprano: "Oh boy, we can't go there. There's a billion of them! And, and, I know a couple of nice Muslims. You, you bigot!"

Posted by: old white guy at January 17, 2008 1:46 PMThe Phantom - excellent and accurate comments. Of course the best way to fight evil is to expose it to the light of truth, which would have been a better way to deal with the want-to-be Nazis rather than using hate laws to shut them down. Of course the original intent was good, but as they say the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
They should just say he has the same rights they have and be quiet, oh wait everyone knows thats a lie. So the important thing is stopping people from telling the truth.
Lying is what political correctness is all about.

Posted by: dinosaur at January 17, 2008 2:23 PMold white guy....yes...there are people prepared to die for our freedom...they are called soldiers,airmen,sailors...past AND present. The only good thing about it is...the one's who will die the most igmanious(sp) deaths are the leftards, who will be crying all the way down. The rest of us will be killing, not dying, for our freedoms.
As Patton said(to paraphrase)...nobody wins a war by dying, you make the other SOB die.
Posted by: Justthinkin at January 17, 2008 5:27 PMWhy you call Jim Keegstra a Nazi? He wasn't even an anti-semite. He simply believed in a secret international conspiracy of Jewish bankers, one which exploited a worldwide diasporic Jewish community which was substantially unaware of the conspiracy's existence. And he only believed it because he read it in a book in the public library. Were his beliefs lunacy? I'd say so. Was he a fool to hold them? No argument there. Was he a Nazi? Not in the slightest.
All he was guilty of was being gullible and trusting authority uncritically. More like a global warming true believer than a Nazi.
Posted by: ebt at January 17, 2008 6:12 PMOld White Guy. We in Canada are not currently at the point where people are being called upon to fight and die for their freedom. Nor go to jail for the freedom of others, as this farmer guy had to do in England (except in Caledonia Ont., but that's a special case).
Where we are right now is a few people are being dragged before tribunals and made to pay money. Soft oppression, if you will.
As a Canadian, I have to agree with the scholarly Mr. Justthinkin'. I prefer to make the other guy die for his country. We're funny that way.
Alain, I appreciate your comments. However I must disagree in one small detail, I don't think the intent was ever good even at the start. I can't remember if it was the Liberals or the Progressive Conservatives who brought in the original legislation, but they were both pink-underwear socialist, and knew damn well the can of worms they were dumping on the floor for the rest of us to slip on.
Incidentally, for those of you with a slightly paranoid bent here's something to keep you awake tonight. Remember the "Let a Thousand Flowers Bloom" trick that Chairman Mao pulled on the Chinese intellectuals back in the day? He requested constructive criticism of his policies from the smart set for a couple years, then killed or jailed anyone who had spoken up.
We don't have that, but what we do have is... the Internet!
I got thinking about $1000 hammers and black budget line items today. The Liberals spent a BILLION dollars on the gun registry, a computer system that could do for just Canada what Google does for the whole Internet could be bought and maintained for a tiny fraction of that billion bucks.
Hey, if I were a sneaky scumbag Liberal its what I would do.

Translation: National Socialist German Workers Party. Founded 1919 abolished 1945.(Websters New World Dictionary 1968) It is an illegal organization should it exist. There have been, as far as I know, no charges laid in Canada for being a member.
One can imagine the hysterical left and their cries of "Nazi- you are a Nazi". How many have been so designated as such. Honest Canadians who do not fit in. If lefties ever faced a real Nazi, they would soon know. A jackboot would be coming into their face as they looked upward after being knocked down. Then, they might get an idea of what a Nazi was.
