Is another man's racial slur. The Obama campaign plays the language cognition card.
Update: "One of the stranger things of an increasingly strange campaign season is to hear that a former President of the United States obsequiously called into the Al Sharpton radio show to sort of apologize?—or at least to gain a reprieve from Sharpton for Bill Clinton's supposedly intemperate caricatures of Sen. Obama."

Conrad Black, who can't possibly get into any more trouble (don't listen for him on Sharpton's radio show to apologize), describes Mrs. Obama as callypgian.
That's a really offensive tactic on the part of the Obama set - to imply racism in a remark.
I'm against both Clinton and Obama, but in defense of Clinton, what she was clearly saying in her remark about Martin Luther King and President Johnson was to differentiate between words and actions. King's words about equality rights had to be put into action and it was Johnson who did that.
The point Clinton was making was that Obama is all 'talk and no action'. He's endlessly talking about 'change' and 'hope' and 'the future' but has no practical plan of action on anything that would result in such feelings of 'change, hope in the future'. None.
Obama is a pure propagandist, working on people's emotions to bond them to him. There's no practical plan for any policies; he's attracting them by pure emotion. That's what Clinton was focusing on...and how did the Obama camp deal with this criticism? By diverting attention from the criticism that 'you are all words and no actions' to yet another emotional tactic. Racism.
Claiming that to criticize Martin Luther King is 'an act of racism'. Heh...we are coming to the point where to criticize Barak Hussein Obama is going to be defined as 'an act of racism'.
The Democratic race has two utopians, two sides of the same utopian coin, pitted against each other. Obama is the Talk Guy, pure rhetoric, pure emotion. Clinton is the Authoritarian Social Engineer. Both of them are Big Govt Solves Everything types; both of them reject the individual, both reject critical reasoning and focus only on swaying the peasants by Emotion.
Obama's emotional values are Adoration, Hope, Change and ..now..Pity, ie, racism. Clinton's emotional values are Fear, Authority and Intimidation. She'll sway the peasants to obey out of fear of govt retribution.
Both of them are utopians; both of them set up a system that is forever focused, not on Now and Current Realities...but..on the future. Since your agenda always takes place in the future, you are always unaccountable. Always. If criticized, you will always claim that the situation was meant to be finalized In the Future, and the reason why it isn't final now, is because, you twit, Now is Not The Future.
[Notice the comparison to Stephane Dion, another utopian, who also rejects criticism of his actions of the past and present, claiming that any failures are due to the fact that Now is Not The Future..and IF he had been allowed to govern until The Future...all would be well..eg..his claims about Kyotoism etc).

Posted by: ron in kelowna at January 12, 2008 1:01 PMTo find offense in Hillary's comments takes a real big stretch of the imagination, to say the least. And the Primaries are a terrible time to have a nasty fight with in a political party. It has been said that the Republicans don't win elections, the Democrats lose elections. How true.
I do have to take some guilty pleasure in watching the Clintons, and liberals in general, having to endure the sinister slander tactics that they so frequently use on their opponents. Right now the entire GOP is salivating at how easy this election is going to be.
That being said, never underestimate the Clintons; they are the most powerful political force in America.
Posted by: trent at January 12, 2008 1:58 PMI agree, trent, never underestimate the Clintons.
With regard to the left, the fight will always focus on emotions and personalities and veer away from issues. Right now, we have the Race Tactic, which will, I think, have a limited mileage. Obama has to offer more than fictional hopes and racist pity.
Furthermore, the error of both camps, to lump all 'African-Americans' into one 'Identity-Group' is insulting in itself.
Posted by: ET at January 12, 2008 2:10 PMThe Clintons are beyond racist they are megalomaniacs they are one trick ponies. Anything that may appear racist about them pales in the shadow of ambition that drives them.
The will love anyone who can be useful to their quest and will hate and destroy anyone who hinders them.
In the world of the good, the bad and ugly, these two are the bad AND the ugly.
They should never be president of anything.
They give the Movie "True Colors: (based on Clinton's campaign to be prez. starring Travolta) a new meaning.

Posted by: Liz J at January 12, 2008 2:31 PMET that is very insightful to notice “two sides of the same utopian coin, pitted against each other. Obama is the Talk Guy, pure rhetoric, pure emotion. Clinton is the Authoritarian Social Engineer.”
Democrats are beginning to look a lot like Liberals. Similarly, Paul Martin had a 100 priorities .. he had an imaginary solution for every special interest group that approached him. But no idea for an action plan because all those promises would bankrupt the country.
This election is about “change”. Demographics are “changing” but that is too real for Obama or the Hildebeast to broach. David Frum makes the excellent point that rapidly rising costs of health care due to “changing” demographics is the reason the middle class in America is not feeling any progress. Their wages are not moving up much but their employer is paying a ton in rising Health costs which the workers don’t really appreciate in their pay.
Health may be the biggest thing to hit this election and could “change” everything. IMO, the candidate that understands this best is Mitt Romney. I’m puzzled he hasn’t launched into it yet.
It's quite obviously a case of "It beez racizzums an' shit," on the part of the KKKlintons!
Nowhatimsayin ?
Mr.g
The fuss over race between Obama and the Clintons is fascinating, and proof that the Dems can usually be counted on to self-destruct. All this began because Hillary, who is normally very careful with her words, responded ineptly when Obama compared himself to Martin Luther King.
Hillary should have said something like, "MLK changed America forever, and it's a bit gutsy for Obama, at the beginning of his career, to compare himself to MLK." Instead, Hillary stuck her foot in her mouth and denigrated MLK. It will take a lot of strategic weeping by Hillary to undo the damage of her inept remark.
The resulting racial infighting will be poisonous for the Dems. These events seem to pit white women Democrats against Black Democrats. In the US, there is enormous animosity between Blacks and Hispanics. (Canadian readers, trust me on this.) This racial squabble might have the side effect of driving Hispanics toward Hillary, thus giving Hillary an edge in the upcoming Nevada caucuses despite the Culinary Union's endorsement of Obama.

It’s interesting that the only good thing that can be said about LBJ is someone elses (MLK) civil rights. He has other things in his closet that are less honorable. How many blacks died in Vietnam because he was a coward to not take responsibility and end the War "I will not be the first President to lose a War". The wounds of Vietnam & HHHH Jane. JFK started it, LBJ mini managed it, and Nixon ended it.
We are now at WAR! and Hillary and LBJ are two peas of the same pod. Also Hillary wants to sell out to the UN & LBJ did similar favors for foreign nations
Nice post Kate ! I picked up Hillary’s goof when Fox reported it, but then MSM buried the turd & discredited the reporter. Glad the LIZZARD was awake...
What Hillary! should have said is that Bill was the first black President and that he put words into action by er, uhhm, er...its coming to me

"That's a really offensive tactic on the part of the Obama set - to imply racism in a remark."
Basically, ET, your analysis would be correct except that in this stage of the campaigns and the primary season more depends upon perceptions than upon facts. It may be offensive, but it is the way the game will be played. Handing Obama anything that he can quicky turn into a ***perception*** of racism, within his base of support, is not good thinking.
Hillary is not that quick on her feet so as to inherently realize what many of her comments may offer in the *perception race*. I believe the Clintons believed that they were innoculated from any back splash from the blacks, and now it is being used against them. It probably did not enter their minds that they might be up against a black in the primary race. My guess is that Obama knows more than the Clintons do about how and when to play the race card effectively.
Obviously the Clintons realize how the perception game is played or Bill would not have been on the phone so quicky to Al Sharpton trying to cover the gaff.
This is just the first real salvo of "offensive" things that will occur in the primary season. The prize is the most powerful position in the world. No one who plays nice against the Clintons has any chance of surviving. They have to get down in the mud with them. Any time Obama (or his staff in most cases) can cause the perception of a racial issue having been raised by an opponent he/they will use that opening. Obama is from the rough-and-tumble-bare-knuckles Democratic machine in Chicago. He knows playing very dirty wins. Don't expect anything less.
It is probably quite disconcerting to the Clinton team that they are having to use up so much of their ammunition against other Democrats. This is not the coronation they expected, followed by the ensuing battle with a Republican. Much of their problems have come from unforced errors. Hillary says things that can be *used*. Bill is easy to use because he just never shuts up.
