An interesting exchange between CKOM talk host John Gormley and Ralph Goodale just now, roughly quoted;
Gormley: Did you ever say to David Orchard there will not be a candidate selection in this riding?Advantage, Orchard.Goodale: The responsibility for informing candidates is with the candidate committee to handle the process... and to be fair when David came forward they were told of the leader's perogative to appoint ... they received a kit...
Gormley: Ralph is your answer "no", you never told him?
Goodale: In a telephone conversation with David, I mentioned to him that the leader had the power to designate a candidate... I've seen that comment from David and don't want to get in a he-said she-said...
Update: Speak of the devil...

That wackadoo Orchard the Liberals deserve each other. This is hilarious.
Posted by: Yukon Gold at January 11, 2008 11:54 AMI nominate Ralph Goodale for 2007 "Liberal Puffin of The Year" Award.
Hiding inside political excrement for Stephy!
Giggles Taber: "Mr. Durocher says Liberals in the riding feel betrayed. He says that this riding is one thing the aboriginal people in the North CAN CONTROL."
Hmm, I wonder what people in the southern part of that riding, the "white farm belt"(Durocher's words) feel about that. I think I know.
Meanwhile, aboriginals in the riding wait to see who their overlords (chiefs, leaders) will tell them to vote for as a bloc. And he's complaining about paternalism from central Canadian white folks?
Posted by: Soccermom at January 11, 2008 12:11 PMThe slicked down Goodale is the Master of Obfuscation. Expect no straight answers, straight answers would divulge the facts that must be obscured.
It's the Liberal desperation mode that's causing him to come unglued, he's lapsed into befuddlement.
Speaking of Puffins, where is Puffin Iggy? Is he busy hiding the stuff left by careless Puffins?
Is he trying to be Mr. Spic and Span, worthy of the Kingship?
Posted by: Liz J at January 11, 2008 1:01 PMOK that's 3 parties that have dusted off this political poser...who's next?
Posted by: WL Mackenzie Redux at January 11, 2008 1:01 PMhe said , she said?
who is the she , Orchard or Goodale?
Posted by: cal2 at January 11, 2008 1:02 PMcal2: hee hee.
Posted by: Richard Ball at January 11, 2008 1:05 PMSo Orchard has basically 2 options:
1. Mobilize his forces to help the Conservative candidate or
2. Mobilize his forces to help the NDP candidate.
No matter which option he picks, it helps the Conservative candidate win.
Now, if the Liberals lose this seat they can claim that it's not a function of grassroots dissatisfaction with Dion, but the result of one disgruntled person with a track record of throwing hissy fits. Is team Dion smart enough to have engineered this to take the heat of Dion in the event they would have lost the riding?
Posted by: Reid at January 11, 2008 1:26 PMGoodale is a weasel.
Posted by: philanthropist at January 11, 2008 1:41 PMthe more these two are around the more they both act like a pair of old women,
should have come out "did you see that campaign outfit he was wearing?"
Posted by: cal2 at January 11, 2008 1:43 PM"OK that's 3 parties that have dusted off this political poser...who's next?"
I'm guessing the Green party, Orchard has that organic farming background.
If he does, I wonder how that will fit in with the Dion/Elly May Pact Of Stupidity?
Y'know - you'd think Orchard would figure it out - 1st used and burnt by the Progressive Conservatives (The Blue Liberals), then by the liberal Liberals (The Red Liberals) - that each king he's helped to make with certainly take his support and delegate strength - then toss him.
He's getting more mileage on him than a Thai hooker - without getting the cash.
Aside from holding some wonky positions - he's probably an idealist who thinks democracy and citizen participation are possible roads to contribute to the Canadian nation.
He may be an idealist, but he's also revealed he just don't learn.
Posted by: hardboiled at January 11, 2008 2:36 PMDion made the appointment, not Goodale.
Wonder if Goodale is a willing shield for his weak leader?
Just a thought: are the other three ridings represented by women? If not ? Why not? Why did Dion not just appoint women in these ridings? Why only Northern Sask? Would Bob Rae be running in one of these other ridings? Does he live in the riding that he is running in?
Posted by: Cal at January 11, 2008 2:57 PMJoe Molnar thinks Ralph is a puffin, philanthropist thinks he's a weasel, and Lorraine thinks he's a gopher.
Geez, he's a one-man zoo!
Posted by: KevinB at January 11, 2008 3:30 PMlib...con...lib...con...
Isn't the real problem here that ANY leader can subvert democracy by denying constituents the right to choose?
Sigh.

"But you also have to wonder — again — about Dion’s judgement, not to mention his honesty."

Orchard wants to know where the paper/memo is; Goody won't tell.
Is the memo fake but accurate? Was it a fake but accurate e-mail?
Citoyen's honesty/alibi: I know nuttink about AdScam.

Goodale..the 'gasket blower' I am always intrigued at how ralphie can conjure up such outrage..he just cannot be that serious!Does he really think that any sane person finds it believable? As well, didn't brylcreem go out in the '60's?He really needs a new do.
Posted by: Sammy at January 11, 2008 7:29 PMGoodale has gone to the "Ed Broadbent School of overthetop outrage"
no wonder they have sucked up a bunch of dippers, they are working on dipper mentality.
for Ted
dipper=NDP
So what Orchard doesn't mind if I can't get a job because of affirmative action, hiring Quotas etc, but if it happens to him it's bad???
Oh look what was going around [and orchard was happy about] is now coming to the home of Orchard, suck on it!
LOL,
Posted by: dinosaur at January 11, 2008 10:04 PMSo if Ralf (the gopher) Goodale sees his shadow on February Second do the Libs get 6 more weeks of Orchard?
Posted by: Joe at January 11, 2008 10:05 PMI used to have a sort of begrudging respect and admiration for Ralph Goodale. Now, my feelings toward him waver between pity and disgust - disgust at the way he openly avoids the truth and spins every single question put his way, and pity because he's clearly yesterday's man playing old-school political games that don't resonate with most Canadians.
Indeed, it's these old-school political types that virtually define what is wrong with politics to most Canadians, notwithstanding corruption. He's playing us for fools, but it's so transparent that it's increasingly obvious that the biggest fool is Mr Goodale.
These days it seems he's going from disaster to disaster. It's uncomfortable to watch these political dinosaurs die a slow and painful death - but die they must. Time to go Ralph. Enjoy your pension. I'd love to say you earned it, but you know ...
Posted by: Jimbo at January 11, 2008 10:36 PMIs team Dion smart enough ....
reid ...
Put down the pipe , all of your comments up 'till this , have been intelligent and well reasoned . Team Dion smart enough , not so much .
if goodale can't answer a yes or no question with a yes or no then he is a liar.

That always solves the problems of the Liberals.
Give everybody a TV set.
