Clinton Foundation And Laundromat

Investor's Business Daily;

...direct donations [to the Billary Campaign], under the watchful eye of the Federal Election Commission, are mere chicken feed. The now over $500-million-rich Clinton Foundation is where the real action is.

The New York Times, which has discovered the identity of 97 donors who together gave or pledged $69 million early on, reports some of the million-dollar donors sought changes in policies and two of them were under Justice Department probes.

With the presidential election approaching, Clinton Foundation donations skyrocketed last year to $135 million, 70% more than the year before, with two-thirds of the booty from only 11 donors.

So much for Bill and Hil's populist image.

The former president steadfastly refused to reveal the donors' identities — including one super-rich donor giving $31.3 million.

We can certainly now see why. The $31-million-dollar man turned out to be Canadian mining mogul and founder of Lionsgate Entertainment (distributor of Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11") Frank Giustra, who plans to give another $100 million, plus half his future earnings.

Emphasis mine.

I'd be interested in seeing that list of heavy donors....probably reads like a who's who of transnational monopolists.

This is really a primer on how establishment politics actually works. One may quite reasonably suspect influence peddling, but proving the direct connection is another matter. And of course, there's absolutely no connection between the rise in donations to the Clinton Foundation since 2000 and the concurrent rising probability of a Hillary presidential run, or the presence of foundation donors among the ranks of "Hillraisers."

Posted by: GDW at December 22, 2007 10:45 AM

I think the Giustra donation was made public by Giustra himself some time ago. It's well known that he plans to give much of his wealth away and he has said that Clinton has the brand and influence to make things happen. This is what Giustra told the New Yorker in 2006.

"All of my chips, almost, are on Bill Clinton," he said. "He's a brand, worldwide brand, and he can do things and ask for things that no one else can."

So I don't think there's much to the 'secret donor' angle as far as Giustra is concerned. His wife is an activist and they've found their calling with charity, giant vanity projects or whatever you want to call them.

Like him or not, Bill Clinton was one of the most popular President's of our time, and I think (outside of his need for an occasional dangling of his participles) a great speaker, writer, and President of deep intelligence.

Bash them all you want on election finance issues, we all know that it is a snakepit for both parties... why criticize them if it all part of the game?

Cheers!

"Bill Clinton was one of the most popular President's [sic] of our time, and I think (outside of his need for an occasional dangling of his participles) a great speaker, writer, and President of deep intelligence."

Some people just love the man who traded sensitive weapons technology to the Chinese in return for campaign contributions, had a sexual affair in the Oval Office with a woman barely older than his own daughter (and was working for him -- exploitation anyone? Feminists . . .hello, hello?), had a credible allegation of rape against him, committed perjury while President in order to save himself in a courtcase about another sexual harassment charge, subverted America's intelligence capability that later allowed 9-11 to happen, pardoned tons of criminals for dough just before his term ended, and was involved in sleazy money schemes for absolutely forever.

The rest of us just wish he would take his charm, charisma and 'intelligence' (a reputed intelligence based mainly on his ability to glibly recite all the catch-phrases dear to liberal hearts) . . . and go away.

Oh, and Bill, the "most popular president of our time", never won more than 50% of the vote in a general election. Dubya did.

At least the majority of Americans have SOME sense.

"Deep intelligence" is a real stretch. BTW, i like to think i've been around a little bit, but so far i've never had the urge to insert a cigar in any of my partners, never heard any other guy brag about it.
And in the whitehouse. Now his wife is now running for president because apparently liberals adore them.
That's about all the name "clinton" means to me.

Some Canadians will remember Clinton from his days as Governor of Arkansas.
He approved trading in tainted Arkansas prisoners blood, which the Canadian red Cross allowed into the Canadian system eventually killing Canadians.
Thanks Billy boy!

Leto"
"why criticize them if it all part of the game?"

Because this "game" was never authorized by the people or their constitution.

If you rationalize corruption and malfeasamce and are comfortable with it you're part of the problem.

Posted by: WL Mackenzie Redux at December 22, 2007 12:38 PM

Alex, Ann is dead on:
Clinton 1992 43%
Clinton 1996 49.2%
Bush 2004 50.7%
Maybe being "popular" doesn't translate into votes.

Posted by: Ramon Daley at December 22, 2007 12:58 PM

Hi Alex. Hard to swallow, isn't it?

http://www.nysun.com/article/4180

"With 93% of precincts reporting, Mr. Bush has won 55.6 million votes. That is more than the 50.5 million votes he won in 2000, far more than the roughly 47.4 million that President Clinton won in 1996 or the 44.9 million that Mr. Clinton won in 1992. More Americans voted for Mr. Bush for president than have voted for any other presidential candidate in American history, more even than the 54.5 million who voted for Ronald Reagan in his 1984 landslide."

Posted by: ann at December 22, 2007 1:23 PM

Mr. Mackenzie:

I have no trouble with what you say about corruption and ethics, but let's not single out the Clintons here. The "corruption" in American politics runs deep and is prevalent within both main parties, both liberal and conservative.

Cheers!

Thanks for the reminder about the tainted blood from Arkansas, Joe. I forgot about that icky deal (out of the myriads) that the ever-popular Mr. Clinton pulled over on others for his own gain.

Billary is friend to all commies around the world. If it be drug money, selling human organs or other smuggling, human slavery and just plain corporate exploitation, Billary is there to keep it going and take the funds it needs to do so.

ann: Good posts, and great to deliver the shocka stat that Bush was actually more popular than Clinton.

Deep intelligence?

1 Telling us, post 9/11, that this was blowback - wait for it, for it was a very long time ago -- for the crusades. MORON

2. Sucked in by Arafat, the "world leader" to visit the Whitehouse more than any other. MORON. (one con cons another con)

3. Recent claim that he was against the Iraq War. PATHOLOGICAL LIAR.

It was often argued that Clinton was able to perform the way he did 'cos he mastered the art of mental compartmentalization. My translation of that: he's a psychopath, or if you wish the kindler/gentler version [meaning the same thing] a sociopath.

It was not my intent to insinuate the Hildebeast is the only corrupted candidate...it;s just that the Klintons are the most obvious and established influence peddlers...and I agree with you corruption and malfeasance is partisan blind.......however there is a choice this time...there are 2 unconnected candidates and one of them has a pristine record of 10 terms voting as the people and constitution tell him.

Bill Clinton would have NEVER been president if Ross Perot hadnt split the vote. Its the only way that he got elected. The only reason that he was'nt impeached is that Al Gore was next in line.

Says who? Now, that's a mouthful of unsubstantiated opinion. The country has moved well past Bubba since 9/11. Other than the Usual Suspects on the hardcore loser Dem side, who would endorse Big Foot if welfare could be reinstated or Big Union could trample Walmart, trust me, Bubba is a legend only in his own mind. If you are a Democrat, there aren't many historic heros out there for you.

Bill Clinton's legacy is......not enough for even trailor trash First Grifter wife to get any traction on. Bubba was impeached and lost his law license for lying on a deposition, any idea how rare that standard of moral conduct is in American presidential history?

And, Leto, wikipedia, will free you from the "both party" mindless corruption meme. Spend some time there and you won't have to appear as ignorant on your next post.

Here in BC the Guistra donation was by no means secret as the IBD editorial implied. There have been multiple press conferences etc. by Guistra and Clinton with regards to money and the recruitment of other mining executives. The IBD article even misses the fact that Guistra and Carlos Slim (the Mexican billionaire and the worlds 3rd richest man)got together and donated another huge chunk of millions to the Clinton third world project.

Whilst others may be donating to the foundation hoping for favours the IBD article is definitely off base regarding any secrecy. In fact their research obviously sucks. Simply Googling Guistra/Clinton would have lead to the truth. Even as late as Nov 1st/2007 the Clinton-Giustra story appeared on the front page of the Vancouver Sun
http://www.canada.com/vancouversun/news/story.html?id=796fe3fa-a08f-478e-b177-40bd55f5ad16&k=7156

Seems like the IBD ability to check their story is as bad as CNN recently.

The really depressing thing, is how popular Hill and Bill remain despite the litany of crap and corruption they're involved in.

It signals, to me, the greased lightning descent of our civilization into an immoral/unethical/relativistic swamp, which very few North Americans seem able to discern.

As the mother of young women about the age Monica Lewinsky was at Cigargate, even if Bill Clinton had been clean on all other counts, his sexually exploiting an "underling" (ahem), then lying about it, then throwing her to the "mercy" of the media hounds, would be enough for my eternal dislike and contemp of such a President.

Bill Clinton is a disgrace to the Office of President and if Hillary becomes the next Pres. of the U.S. of A. woe to them and all of us.

I must say, however, that Billary's becoming President doesn't seem like such a sure thing now. She's hauled her mother and Chelsea onto the hustings, both of whom look ill at ease and slightly embarrassed, despite the smiles glued on their faces. Hillary looks like a deer caught in the headlights, desperately trying to avert the hunter's direct gaze and arrow.

It becomes her.

Clinton, from Daniel M Ryan link above(Reason Magazine) 1994:

"Journalists with names also have identified this absence of self in Clinton, but they are not dependent on the Washington media-political establishment. One is Lewis Lapham, editor of Harper's. In the Arpil 1993 issue Lapham described Clinton's response to a group of people: 'He romaed across the sound stage like a starved animal feeding on the questions from the audience as if they were the stuff of life and breath" AND 'He defines himself as a man desperately eager to please, and the voraciousness of his appetite -- for more friends, more speeches, more food and drink, more time on stage, more hugs -- suggest the emptiness of a soul that knows itself only by the names of what it seizes or consumes.' "

Another quote from alternative journalist Sam Smith, author of Shadows of Hope and editor of Progessive Review: "It was the normal world of the politician, but with Clinton there seemed too much. Too many hands, too many friends, too many words, too many hours before he went to sleep, too many hours on C-SPAN solving the nation's problems with too many industrialists and economists - and in the end too little else. It was as though he were afraid that if he excused himself from the the public eye he might no longer be real".

A little holiday trivia:

Caroline Mulroney is married to Andrew Lapham, the son of Lewis Lapham. Brian and Mila are the grandparents of Lewis H. Lapham III, and twins Pierce Lapham and Elizabeth Theodora Lapham.

Posted by: 'been around the block at December 23, 2007 5:02 PM

A good friend of mine who is an executive with a large firm and also an American who votes Republican went to a speech given by Clinton here in Toronto a short while ago. She thought he was a great speaker with amazing charm and charisma. When I asked her what he spoke about she couldn't remember but he was really great and the audience was wild with their applause. BS baffles brains every time.

Posted by: Dave at December 23, 2007 10:27 PM

BTW, Caroline Mulroney didn't marry Andrew Lapham until 2000, so Lewis Lapham's comments in 1994 about the vacuousness of Beel Cleenton happened long before...nothing here, move on...
