Good evening ladies & gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. I was planning to keep the best Christmas tracks I've found 'till Christmas Eve, but then I was thinking about that this morning and I realized that many people may not have the chance to listen to this channel then.

So without further ado, here's the first of two tracks MND has been waiting for, here's Cantata #4 from Bach's Christmas Oratorio, brought to you tonight by the gentlemen:

My 2008 predictions:

1. AGW will be completely debunked
2. SEC will launch investigations into carbon credit companies
3. Screwzuki will scramble and say he was all about pollution, not CO2
4. Dion will retire from politics for personal reasons and spend more time with his dog, Kyoto
5. Bob Rae will become the new Liberal leader
6. Izzy will then join Dion in political retirement
7. The CPC government will fall due to a vote counting error by the Liberals (not enough CPC members in the House at the time of the vote)
8. Fall election – CPC/SH victory and CPC majority government – Libs decimated in Quebec

Vitruvius - thanks for keeping late night radio alive on SDA

U.S. Senate Report: Over 400 Prominent Scientists Disputed Man-Made Global Warming Claims in 2007

Senate Report Debunks "Consensus"

This blockbuster Senate report lists the scientists by name, country of residence, and academic/institutional affiliation. It also features their own words, biographies, and weblinks to their peer reviewed studies and original source materials as gathered from public statements, various news outlets, and websites in 2007. This new “consensus busters” report is poised to redefine the debate.

WOW ... I read a good portion of the Senate report , there is enough solid information there to do an article a day for the next year exposing the baseless claims of the global warming crowd.

Maybe it is possible for the truth to come out after all ....here's hoping......

Sorry to hog all the posts here , but I will show one example from The Senate Report for those who are too busy to read it all:

Norway: Geologist/Geochemist Dr. Tom V. Segalstad, a professor and head of the Geological Museum at the University of Oslo and formerly an expert reviewer with the UN IPCC: "It is a search for a mythical CO2 sink to explain an immeasurable CO2 lifetime to fit a hypothetical CO2 computer model that purports to show that an impossible amount of fossil fuel burning is heating the atmosphere. It is all a fiction."

Has global warming stopped?
David Whitehouse

'The fact is that the global temperature of 2007 is statistically the same as 2006 and every year since 2001'

Global warming stopped? Surely not. What heresy is this? Haven’t we been told that the science of global warming is settled beyond doubt and that all that’s left to the so-called sceptics is the odd errant glacier that refuses to melt?

Aren’t we told that if we don’t act now rising temperatures will render most of the surface of the Earth uninhabitable within our lifetimes? But as we digest these apocalyptic comments, read the recent IPCC’s Synthesis report that says climate change could become irreversible. Witness the drama at Bali as news emerges that something is not quite right in the global warming camp.

With only few days remaining in 2007, the indications are the global temperature for this year is the same as that for 2006 – there has been no warming over the 12 months.

But is this just a blip in the ever upward trend you may ask? No.

The fact is that the global temperature of 2007 is statistically the same as 2006 as well as every year since 2001. Global warming has, temporarily or permanently, ceased. ...-

A lengthy quote from The Law by Frédéric Bastiat:

The strange phenomenon of our times – one which will probably astound our descendants – is the doctrine based on this triple hypothesis: the total inertness of mankind, the omnipotence of the law, and the infallibility of the legislator. These three ideas form the sacred symbol of those who proclaim themselves totally democratic.

The advocates of this doctrine also profess to be social. So far as they are democratic, they place unlimited faith in mankind. But so far as they are social, they regard mankind as little better than mud. Let us examine this contrast in greater detail…

What is the attitude of the democrat when political rights are under discussion? How does he regard the people when a legislator is to be chosen? Ah, then it is claimed that the people have an instinctive wisdom; they are gifted with the finest perception; their will is always right; the general will cannot err; voting cannot be too universal.

When it is time to vote, apparently the voter is not to be asked for any guarantee of his wisdom. His will and capacity to choose wisely are taken for granted. Can the people be mistaken? Are we not living in an age of enlightenment? What! are the people always to be kept on leashes? Have they not won their rights by great effort and sacrifice? Have they not given ample proof of their intelligence and wisdom? Are they not adults? Are they not capable of judging for themselves? Do they not know what is best for themselves? Is there a class or a man who would be so bold as to set himself above the people, and judge and act for them? No, no, the people are and should be free. They desire to manage their own affairs, and they shall do so.

But when the legislator is finally elected – ah! then indeed does the tone of his speech undergo a radical change. The people are returned to passiveness, inertness, and unconsciousness; the legislator enters into omnipotence. Now it is for him to initiate, to direct, to propel, and to organize. Mankind has only to submit; the hour of despotism has struck. We now observe this fatal idea: The people who, during the election, were so wise, so moral, and so perfect, now have no tendencies whatever; or if they have any, they are tendencies that lead downward into degradation.

It's up to you to interpret, but to my eyes, M. Bastiat is suggesting that part and parcel of democracy is the right - if not the duty or obligation - to question and criticize the laws passed under a democratic system. The form in which to do so is more a question of etiquette than of politics. (I need hardly spell out the difference between criticizing and breaking - at least, I hope I don't need to.)

News from Norway
Norway's emission of greenhouse gases increased by nine percent from 1990-2003 and the nation is not on course to meet the environmental obligations laid out by the Kyoto agreement.
The new figures stem from the United Nations climate convention and were presented by Statistics Norway (SSB) on Wednesday.
Emission increases continued in 2004 with Norway discharging 11 percent more greenhouse gases compared to 1990 levels. The Kyoto agreement demands that countries reduce their emission levels by 2008-2012.
Norway's increase is mainly due to a 77 percent increase in emission from the oil and gas sector, and pollution from road traffic, up 34 percent in this period.
Sweden is the only Nordic nation to manage an emission reduction in the period 1990-2003, and based on 2003 figures, the UK, France, Greece and some Eastern European nations are on course to meet Kyoto requirements.

Shoppers more likely to buy from attractive salespeople

...The men were sent to try on a shirt, but this time the salesperson told them that she had worn it on her prior shift.

Sometimes, the salesperson showed the item in a dry-cleaning bag, but the other half of the time it was on a hanger, implying it hadn't been cleaned.

They were later asked to evaluate how much they would pay for the shirt, how much they liked it, the likelihood of purchasing the product and how desirable it was to them.

"The dirty shirt rated higher for the men when the salesperson was highly attractive," said Argo. "It's like they were trying to get her essence."...

"completely oblivious". "Truly amazing".
Steady as she goes.
...-

Antarctic Temperatures: 1958-2002
[...]
From approximately 1970 to the end of the record, however, temperatures of the region simply fluctuated around an anomaly mean of about 0.12°C, neither warming nor cooling over the final 32 years of the record.

This latter observation is truly amazing in light of the fact that the region of study includes the Antarctic Peninsula, which experienced phenomenal warming during this period. Nevertheless, the mean surface air temperature of the entire region changed not at all, over a period of time that saw the air's CO2 concentration rise by approximately 47 ppm (about 15% of its 1970 value, as per the Mauna Loa CO2 record).
Clearly, the entire continent of Antarctica, together with much of the Southern Ocean that surrounds it, has been completely oblivious to the supposedly "unprecedented" radiative impetus for warming produced by anthropogenic emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases over the last three decades of the 20th century ... and even a bit beyond. ...-

Caroline Glick, Column One: The triumph of legal defeatism

Mandelblit and Mazuz testified that legal advisers were present at all levels of command in all the relevant service arms and in the security cabinet. At each level the lawyers were asked to judge the legality of all the proposed targets and planned operations before they were carried out. And as the two explained, in their decisions, these lawyers were informed not by the goal of winning the war, but by their interpretation of international law.

From both men's perspectives, international law takes precedence over the national interests in wartime war. Mazuz argued, "Today international law controls our lives, no less … than domestic law. In all spheres - not just in the sphere of the laws of war… the sovereignty of states is diminishing and international law is becoming the tip of the pyramid of norms. It is becoming a substitute for the constitutions of states."

...

Given the contrast between Mandelblit's and Mazuz's view of the war as a triumph and the public's view of the war as a failure, it is worth considering whether there is a connection between the unprecedented "lawyerization" of the war in Lebanon and the fact that Israel lost the war.

...When Muslims come to Canada, they try to mix in with Canadian people. They wear the same clothes, speak the same language and eat the same food. But problems start when our kids grow up here. Islamic Bloc Scores 'Defamation of Religions' Resolution at UN

By Patrick Goodenough
CNSNews.com International Editor
December 20, 2007

(CNSNews.com) - Alongside a resolution adopted by the U.N. General Assembly this week calling for a moratorium on the death penalty, the world body passed a raft of other human rights-related motions. One of them, introduced by Islamic nations, focuses on combating the "defamation of religions."

Resolutions on the human rights situation in North Korea and Iran also passed, although dozens of countries -- including human rights violators Cuba, Sudan, Syria and Zimbabwe -- voted against the motions.

An annual resolution on "the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination" also passed by an overwhelming margin, with only the United States, Israel, and three small Pacific island nations voting "no." There were four abstentions.

The motion on defamation of religions has been a priority for the 57-nation Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) since 9/11. It took on new impetus following a Danish newspaper's publication in 2005 of cartoons satirizing Mohammed.

Introduced by Pakistan on behalf of the OIC, it passed on Tuesday by a 108-51 margin, with 25 abstentions. As with many of the other votes, the U.S. lined up with democracies in Europe, Asia and elsewhere against developing nations, including repressive regimes.

Although the resolution refers to defamation of "religions," Islam is the only religion named in the text, which also takes a swipe at counter-terrorism security measures.

It expresses alarm about "discrimination" and "laws that stigmatize groups of people belonging to certain religions and faiths under a variety of pretexts relating to security and illegal immigration."

Muslim minorities are subjected to "ethnic and religious profiling ... in the aftermath of the tragic events of 11 September 2001," it says.

The resolution decries "the negative projection of Islam in the media" and voices "deep concern that Islam is frequently and wrongly associated with human rights violations and terrorism."

OIC secretary-general Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu earlier this month addressed an international conference on "Islamophobia," held in Turkey, and told the gathering that freedom of expression was being used as a cover in the West to promote anti-Islam sentiment.

The OIC soon will release its first-ever annual report on "Islamophobia."

More on the UN resolution. From gatesofvienna.blogspot.com:

But the wording leaves no doubt about which religion and culture it intends to protect. The resolution:
- - - - - - - - -
Opposes “the introduction and enforcement of laws that specifically discriminate against and target Muslims”;

Points out “the increasing trend in recent years of statements attacking religions, Islam and Muslims in particular, especially in human rights forums”;

Asserts that “Islam is frequently and wrongly associated with human rights violations and terrorism”; and

“Stresses the need to effectively combat defamation of all religions, Islam and Muslims in particular, especially in human rights forums”.

The camel’s nose under the UN human rights tent is the concept of “racism and xenophobia” as a violation of human rights. Conflating the fear of Islam with racism and/or xenophobia is a well-established technique for placing criticism of Islam out of bounds. Such logic is fundamentally flawed — Nigerian Christians are, after all, the same race and nationality as the Muslims who burn their churches, but any mention or criticism of such an issue will be forbidden under the UN’s guidelines.

Simply collecting and publishing data on atrocities committed in the name of Islam will become “hate speech” once the would-be despots at the UN and the EU have their way.

A bomb explosion in Varanasi that kills hundreds of Hindus will be a “tragedy”.

Any newspaper report stating that Muslims are claiming responsibility for the deed will be a crime.

Wake up! It’s a brave new world out there.

For Ted and others with an equally ignorant and dangerous opinion about Islam -

The coles notes version of the Quran, Hadith and Sira:

Following are excerpts from a speech by Muhammad Taher Al-Farouq, leader of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, which was posted on December 3, 2007 at http://ek-is.org, a website hosted in Tampa, FL, and owned by NOC4 Hosts Inc.
To view the clip, visit http://www.memritv.org/clip/en/1636.htm.

Muhammad Taher Al-Farouq: "I would like to congratulate the nation of Muhammad, and especially the mujahideen. In this holy month of Ramadhan, we ask them that, as part of their resistance to the enemies of God, His Prophet, the enemies of the Koran, Islam, and the Muslims, they increase their martyrdom and jihad operations, and fight the sworn enemies of Islam - the Jews, the Christians, and the hypocrites - and carry out the best jihad operations.

[...]

"The Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan is part of the nation of Muhammad, and it is known by this name to friends and foes alike. The enemies of Islam know this movement by this name. This movement is connected to the Islamic Emirate we had in Afghanistan, under the leadership of the Emir of the Believers, Mullah Muhammad Omar.

[...]

"Our goal is to implement Islamic law, the law of the Koran, in God's kingdom. In other words, this kingdom, which belongs to God, should be ruled by the laws of God alone.

[...]

"Today, the enemies of Islam object to this goal, just like they did during the time of Muhammad, but let me announce to the believers, to the nation of Muhammad, that in the very near future, thanks to the sacrifices made by the nation of Muhammad, we will regain our glory of past times.

[...]

"As long as there are infidels and enemies of God in His kingdom, this movement will continue its jihad. Today, the nation of Muhammad has everything but an Islamic caliphate. We have clerics, mujahideen, and fedayeen, but not a caliphate. One of the most important goals of the Islamic movement of Uzbekistan is to establish an Islamic caliphate at any price.

[...]

"We take pride in the brothers in all the countries of Islam - in Iraq, Somalia, Lebanon, Palestine, Chechnya, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Africa, and Asia, and in all the countries of the world. We take pride in their jihad to elevate the word of Allah. We have good relations with them. As I've said, their joy is our joy, and their sorrow is our sorrow. We all constitute one body. We all have a common goal against the infidels. When mujahideen are taken by the enemy - whether the Americans or other infidels - to Guantanamo or other prisons, it does not ask them to which nation or community they belong. It treats them all the same way, and tortures all of them the same way."

[...]

Interviewer: "Which countries help you?"

[...]

Al-Farouq: "The countries that supported and helped God's Messenger help us.

[...]

"The money in the infidel banks is the daily bread of the mujahideen. The convoys come from Pakistan, through Torkhan or Karachi, are the daily bread of the mujahideen. The money in the banks in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and elsewhere is the daily bread of the mujahideen. The governments that use this money against the Muslims and Islam acquire bombs and airplanes with it, in order to bomb the Muslims. Therefore, this money is the [legitimate] booty of the Muslims.

[...]

"I always tell the mujahideen that if they want to get money, they should beat the infidels and take their money. You must hit them on the head and take their money. You should rob their banks and take the money. You should take their people prisoner, just like the Prophet did. Don't think this is a sin, because the Prophet Muhammad himself exchanged prisoners for ransom. There's nothing wrong with collecting money in exchange for prisoners.

[...]

"Allah willing, America will soon be annihilated, just like the USSR was annihilated. We are convinced of this.

[...]

"Allah willing, we will reach America. The men of this nation will reach America. The goal of this campaign is not only Kabul, Kandahar, or Baghdad. The eyes of the nation of Muhammad are set on Washington, London, Moscow, Paris, Delhi, Beijing, and other countries. This is our goal and, Allah willing, we will get there."

Dem leaders pressured to alter war strategy

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, despite their pledges to continue pushing to end the war in Iraq, face growing pressure from their rank-and-file Democrats to focus more attention on domestic, “pocketbook” issues in the upcoming election year.

Junior Democrats describe an “Iraq fatigue” setting in among some members after dozens of successful withdrawal votes failed to drive a wedge between Republicans and President Bush on the war strategy.

The restless Democrats acknowledge the war issue remains critically important for the country, but they would like to see their leaders tone down the rhetoric and avoid showdowns with Bush over the war, wherever possible.

Still, heading into 2008, Democrats have not articulated as clear a game plan on how to handle the political debate on the war as they had heading into 2007. ...-

Thanks, cal2 and Wl Mc. I needed that after last night watching the Harper interview on CBC. What I found disturbing was Harper saying that he'll let the inquiry decision rest on the report from the Johnston. I'm disturbed that he may let this fall by the wayside. As a taxpaying Canadian for forty years I don't think that this line of thought is good enough! I want some answers to the HRDC wastage, the gun registry boondoggle, the Shawninigate mortgage, the Radwanski deal, the immigration/ Sgro fiasco, the Kyoto/Global warming scam, etc., etc., etc! The Liberals made a BIG deal about Mulroney in the HoC for a measly $3K well I want to know about the BILLIONS of dollars that have been squandered under the Liberals! Harper owes it to Canadians to make sure that this rock we're peering under is turned over and exposed to the light of day. If he doesn't get a full blown inquiry under way before the opposition parties force an election then this country is, as has often been commented on here, a 'BANANA' republic. If the 30% of the partisan left that have always voted Liberal are not shown the true face of the Liberal party then it may be time to raise the flag of insurrection in Western Canada. I've had it up to my chin with what passes for Canada today, this country and all Canadians have been deluded by a bunch of shysters over the better part of the last fifty years, Harper has a chance that wont be repeated to clean house and give us hope of a better future.

As the lack of global warming becomes more evident, the Climate Changers will morph into some other area of fear and guilt. Not sure how much stupider it can get.

The magnitude of their Global Warming fear and guilt campaign has served to alert a lot more of the people on the planet to the elaborate scamming perpetrated upon us by our dear leaders.

If anything, we will be more willing to speak up sooner than we are doing this time. We will all be more skeptical.

Remember ... Clever Climate Change Politics (CCCP) is exactly the same as the system the Soviet Union used for about seventy five years. It failed because people like to be free and as Zappa said, "people like to own stuff".

The global warming, oceans are arising gang will quiet down over the next year, but they won't like it much and won't admit they were wrong. Their anger and frustration will manifest itself somewhere else and you can count on it.

It will take some time to reverse the money flow in their direction. Let us all complain to our governments as much the Lefties do about the money and maybe we can help our economies by trashing the carbon credit scam.

Now brothers and sisters, let us pray that Stephen Harper gets his majority.

Well the CHRISTMAS holidays are starting for me don't know how much time I'll get to blog so I better wish everyone a merry Christmas now.

Merry Christmas! If that offends you heres hoping you don't live in a country where it's the name of a national holiday like Canada. And if you do live somewhere where it's a national holiday and you don't like it feel free to move to Zimbabwe where socialism is allowed.

Been a good year "politically" Trudeau won worst Canadian and that's hard to top, ever.

Well finally. One of Ezra's biggest mistakes was in dictating to his blog authors that they no longer had the right to delete offensive comments. When you own property, and allow the graffiti artists full reign, it shouldn't come as a surprise that both the attractiveness and value might fall as a result.

Gore: Scientists Disagreeing with Climate Alarmism Tied to Big Oil

As NewsBusters reported Thursday, over 400 scientists in 2007 "voiced significant objections to major aspects of the so-called ‘consensus' on man-made global warming."

Predictably, Nobel Laureate Al Gore dismissed this historic Senate report by stating through a representative that some of these esteemed scientists from around the world have connections to Big Oil, and, therefore, their opinions should be ignored.

Pretty amazing coming from a man that likely has made what some estimate is $100 million in the past seven years selling this canard to the public, wouldn't you agree? ...-

Light reading for a cold weekend.

The Failed State of Palestine

Michael Eisenstadt, director of the Military and Security Studies Program at The Washington Institute, has produced a lengthy Policy Focus Paper entitled “The Palestinians: Between State Failure and Civil War.”

Eisenstadt writes that the Palestinian Authority has “largely functioned as a de facto state since its creation in 1994” and now “displays many of the traits of a failed state:”

On the eve of the Hamas takeover of Gaza, the PA was no longer able (and in some respects, it never was able) to fulfill the most important functions of a state: to provide for the welfare and security of its people. The clearest signs of the weakness of the PA were what Palestinians referred to as “the four Fs”: fawda (chaos), fitna (strife), falatan (lawlessness), and fassad (corruption).

None of the four “Fs” were caused by Israel.

[Hmm. 4F -- doesn't that mean "medically unfit for military or naval service"? Maybe that's why they stick to rocket attacks and terrorism.]

The full report from Eisenstadt is available here:

http://www.washingtoninstitute.org/templateC04.php?CID=285

Worth reading in its entirety.

To My few Liberal/NDP Friends:

Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasion and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all. I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2008, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make our country great. Not to imply that Canada is necessarily greater than any other country nor the only free country in the Western Hemisphere. Also, this wish is made without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wished.

Quebec politicians don't have to take money in brown envelopes, they just ask for the money openly. In fact, they don't even have to ask for it, it just pours it.

So what's happening with John Edwards - has anyone besides the National Enquirer and Ann Coulter picked up this story about a supposed adultery and pregnant aide? I believe it is Newsweek that has Edwards on its cover this week - bad timing.

Former NDP candidate Francis Chartrand wanted Canada to be more like Venezuela or East Germany

Francis Chartrand was the former NDP candidate for Riviere-des-Mille-Iles in Quebec. He was dumped as the candidate, and I posted on the shifting story as it appeared on his blog. Well, guess what. It has shifted yet again!

Fed up with this nonsense, I did a post-by-post walkthrough of his blog. And boy, would he have made one find candidate for the NDP! Nothing like having one of your candidates demanding the nationalization of everything and espousing an East German model for Canada to follow. [...]

In any case, that means there are only two places right now where you can read about Francis Chartrand's opinions about where Canada needed to go. One is Francis Chartrand's entry for November 17, 2006, and the other is here on my blog.

I have a feeling that by this time tomorrow, it will only be on this blog.

And let's highlight Chartrand's view of where the NDP ought to be taking Canada: ...-

Neil*s, [3:5} predictions for 2008

1. AGW will be completely debunked [agreed! ]

2. SEC will launch investigations into carbon credit companies. [ later, but very likely.]

3. Screwzuki will scramble and say he was all about pollution, not CO2 [ I can see it now. Just as I also predicted.]

4. Dion will retire from politics for personal reasons and spend more time with his dog, Kyoto [true]

5. Bob Rae will become the new Liberal leader.
[ Bob could charm Karl to go back to Germany. Why the silly Liberals missed Rae as their best hope, I*ll never understand.]

6. Izzy will then join Dion in political retirement [Whoa, Izzy likes big easy buck$.]

7. The CPC government will fall due to a vote counting error by the Liberals (not enough CPC members in the House at the time of the vote) [ Iffy ]

8. Fall election – CPC/SH victory and CPC majority government – Libs decimated in Quebec [ Looks good to me. ]

At least 6 out of 8. Good thinking Neil.= TG

MSM buries the Orchard-Citoyen Dion feud in this report. It's a clever ploy by the MSM.

Orchard offered the apples of discord/poison/support to Citoyen Dion at the Liberal leadership convention; Citoyen Dion bit/masticated the rotten green apples full of worms proffered by Orchard. Now, a year later, Dion swallows, worms and all.

Read also the Dionglish. ...-

"Four federal byelections offer Dion chance to solidify leadership" [...]

"Orchard's supporters have begun an e-mail campaign, warning Dion that the Saskatchewan farmer's effective and loyal network of organizers will withdraw their services across the country if Orchard isn't treated fairly.

"David Orchard has supporters across Canada - people who are prepared to support their local Liberal candidate based, frankly, on supporting David Orchard in supporting you and the Liberal party," reads one e-mail to Dion obtained by The Canadian Press.

"Those candidates may lose strong and active supporters should Mr. Orchard be treated with less than full respect in this matter."

While Dion still wants Orchard to run for the Liberals, insiders say that doesn't necessarily mean Desnethe is the only possible riding.

Dion himself dodged questions about the dispute, saying only: "When we'll be ready to announce a candidate, it will be a very good announcement and we'll be a united party behind the candidate."" ...-

Here is a link also to his on line greetings:

http://pm.gc.ca/eng/media.asp?id=1942

Not sure the photo of him and the family are on this page. Once again, in all my years this is the first time I have been so absolutely proud of the leader of my country. That goes back to Diefenbaker. I was disgusted with Trudeau as his amoral communist ideals were ballyhooed around the world making us seem like a backward Cuba wanna bes, (Uncle Castro is still the hero of the Trudeau boys)

I ripped up my PC card with Clark and Mulroney , and Chretien was the laughingstock of every single international conference where he was like the stupid bufoon rich uncle who everybody put up with but laughed at behind his back. Martin-well, it was the international community that nicknamed him Mr. Dithers. Nuff said.

I am so proud of PM Harper. He is a wonderful role model and is in this job for all of the right reasons.

So, Marry Christmas to a leader that we can all be proud of.

We honour Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Why not Jesus?
Terry O'neill, National Post
Published: Friday, December 14, 2007

Gordon Campbell, the Premier of British Columbia, traveled to the centre of the province's fast-growing Fraser Valley in mid-November to announce that the main entrance to the $355-million Abbotsford Hospital and Cancer Centre, which is scheduled to open next spring, will be named in honour of the founder of Christianity.

"The naming of the hospital entrance after Jesus Christ is an enduring tribute to the commitment of the Christian community to health care," the premier said to enthusiastic applause. "From now on, everyone entering through the Jesus Christ Main Entrance will be reminded of the many community-minded Christians who helped make this great new facility possible."

Regional officials confirmed that members of the Christian community in Abbotsford, which is in the heart of B.C.'s so-called "Bible Belt," comprise a large percentage of donors to the hospital foundation.

Missed hearing about this, did you? Well, there's a reason: the event did not actually occur.

But one very much like it did, in fact, take place on Nov. 15. That's when Premier Campbell went to Surrey, not Abbotsford, to tell health officials and members of the public that the entrance to a new state of the art emergency and urgent-care facility at Surrey Memorial Hospital would be named in honour of the founder of Sikhism, a religion that has many adherents in the Vancouver suburb -- adherents that are also renowned for their political clout.

Here are the premier's actual words: "The naming of the entrance to the Surrey Memorial Hospital's new emergency centre after Guru Nanak Dev Ji is a fitting and lasting tribute to the dedication of the South Asian community

to health care in this region."

If the announcement doesn't ring a bell, it's because the event received virtually no media play in Vancouver, let alone across the country. Similarly, very little has been said or written about the fact that authorities have also named the new emergency department at the William Osler Health Centre in Brampton, Ont., after Guru Nanak.

Of course, had Campbell made the fictitious "Jesus Christ" announcement, we

could have expected to see a crack CBC investigative team descend on the premier's office, and scandalized critics from coast to coast raising a hue and cry over Campbell's trampling of the principle of separation of church and state. But honour the peace-loving, charitable founder of Sikhism and opinion leaders in the best newsrooms apparently think it's no more interesting than Campbell's kissing a baby or cutting a ribbon.

Funny thing, then: The issue of church-state separation seems to arise only when the "church" involved is a Christian one.

Remember, for example, when Catholic officials voiced concerns over gay marriage in 2005? Then-foreign affairs minister Pierre Pettigrew essentially told them to shut up, famously opining, "I find that the separation of the church and state is one of the most beautiful inventions of modern times."

Similarly, humanists have been railing for years against some municipal councils in Ontario and Quebec for their practice of saying The Lord's Prayer before meetings.

All such criticism seems to be based on the presumption that the concept of separation of church and state is strongly rooted in Canadian law and tradition. In fact, no such foundation exists. As became clear in the recent Ontario election, during which the province's constitutionally entrenched funding of a separate Catholic school system was discussed, Canada has no U.S.-style "wall" separating church and state.

And so there's no good reason why Premier Campbell shouldn't have named that emergency entrance after Guru Nanak, who by all accounts was a magnificent fellow.

Furthermore, by the same logic, there's also no good reason why Campbell's B.C. Liberal government can't name the front door at that new Abbotsford hospital (which really is being built) after Jesus Christ. But don't hold your breath.
