How come you can name your child mohammed but not a teddy bear? Why is one respect and the other idolatry?
I'm just asking...........

more to the point, if young mohammed turns out to be a bad seed...
how much more, would a devout muslim parent be obliged to, er...
discipline him?

Posted by: neo at December 19, 2007 11:31 AMaj,
Good question, but the same restrictions dont apply. Nobody gets upset if a Teddy bewar is called Jesus, there are no restrictions to depicting Jesus in art or literature as a man or in a God incarnation.
In anglo societies Jesus is an uncommon name....but in Spainish or even French society it is not unheard of.
Different cultures, one just happens to have a deadly consequence....
I just dont get the contradiction, thats why I was asking.....maybe if there are any islamic scholars out there they can explain why the difference.............
Posted by: Stephen at December 19, 2007 11:37 AMErm, we don't live in Blair's Britain anymore. Now it belongs to someone called Gordon, a name I notice isn't in the list...
Posted by: Stephanie at December 19, 2007 11:45 AMSorry, once again I'm not sure I have it right.
I'm having trouble keeping track.
Is this strictly an anti.....
This is starting to remind me of the CCBC broadcasting "comedic and satirical" parodies of George Bush and his administration. What the heck is the CCBC doing insulting any other nations leaders when they what they really should be doing is reporting on news or relevant fact, which may include private citizens making comedic or satirical parodies of another nations leader, or perhaps singing praises of another nations leader. Doing otherwise has just led me to the conclusion that I can no longer believe most things I hear from them, particularly on that topic.

Or are you trying to be esoteric or occult?

Posted by: philanthropist at December 19, 2007 1:28 PMIf Muslims have such a high birth rate that Mohamed is the second most popular boy name
then
why is there not one middle eastern/Muslim GIRL name in the top 20 list?
Do Muslims give western names to their daughter?
or what ?
Posted by: Friend of USA at December 19, 2007 1:34 PMAlso from Blair/Brown Britain:
The Dining Police
" In fairness, though, the police are only preparing to do to each other what they have been occasionally doing to everyone else. In April 2000, it was reported that the police in Gloucestershire had formed a special unit to
conduct what they called “Operation Napkin”.
Officers out of uniform were sent on weekend evenings into Indian and Chinese restaurants, their mission to arrest anyone who made impolite comments on the ethnic origin of the staff.
This continued for a month, and was hailed by senior officers as a success— even though it had netted only one arrest. Therefore, it was extended to Christmas. Chief Inspector Dean Walker, the officer in charge, confirmed that the operation would continue for the rest of the year. By now, one arrest had been joined by one caution.1
Success bred imitation. In March 2001, the Metropolitan Police launched their own offensive against “vindaloo and lager racism” in London. 25 officers out of uniform visited 10 ethnic restaurants chosen at random, in search of
offenders. This operation was ordered by Deputy Assistant Commissioner Tarique Ghaffur. No doubt, Mr Ghaffur was concerned his officers should be
given something to do in a city where theft and violence and general disorder were falling to their lowest points on record."

This reminds me of the British contest to come up with a new motto. The one I liked best was 'Britannia rules the veils' (they actually picked 'No motto, please, we're British).
Posted by: Nicola Timmerman at December 19, 2007 1:55 PMIf you look at the stats given, surely it just means there are a lot of Muslim kids going around with the same name - "The last national census in 2001 put the UK Muslim population at 1.6million, but this will have grown substantially in the past five years"; with 6,000 odd babies being called Mohammed isn't that just a hefty percentage of the total? The rest of us millions here just have more varied names.
Posted by: Stephanie at December 19, 2007 4:31 PMDoes this mean that Jack! Layton will be changing his first name?
Posted by: Sean at December 19, 2007 7:02 PMIs this Mohammed nonsense supposed to be funny?
The official page shows that name at number 17 and Muhammed at number 38. Still a little higher than I'd have expected since I've only ever met one or two and I've always lived in Britain. But as a commenter above says, probably down to their calling their kids the same name.

No wonder Tony Blair gets insulted for still breathing, when this sort of misinformation is spread across the net.
Why do you do it?
Posted by: BlairSupporter at December 19, 2007 7:56 PMBlairSupporter, I believe the confusion lies in your interpretation of the chart. It specifically says Mohammed is number 2 'when all derivations of the name are combined'. These derivations include:
The different spellings of Muhammad in 2006 and the number of occurrences
Mohammed 2,833
Muhammad 1,422
Mohammad 920
Muhammed 358
Mohamed 354
Mohamad 29
Mahammed 18
Mohammod 13
Mahamed 12
Muhammod 9
Muhamad 7
Mohmmed 6
Mohamud 5
Mohammud 5
Hope this helps.

What an ugly thing to do to children.
Posted by: Jam at December 19, 2007 9:03 PMI just checked the DVD information. Dreadful.
THIS is what gets me:
"A copy of the DVD was bought in Bradford. It has been passed to counter-terrorism police who said they were investigating to see if any offences had been committed.
The DVD box lists the distributor as the Abrar Book Shop in Hyde Park, Leeds. The shop – less than half a mile from the flat where the 7/7 bombers assembled their explosives – was shut yesterday."
'... to SEE IF ANY OFFENCES had been committed'!!
One of our problems here in the UK is that the civil and human righters have hijacked our press, courts and it seems our government. They wouldn't let Blair do what he wanted to do, and now they're onto this new guy - whatsisname.
Sadly, the "liberal intelligentsia", a bit of an oxymoron, imho, the insecure democrats who are terrified of all the wrong things, are likely to win this battle too!
[Now Mohammed - here's a nice video for you to watch after the Queen's Speech!]
Hi there - to your earlier point where it
"specifically says Mohammed is number 2 'when all derivations of the name are combined'. These derivations include:" etc, would you mind pointing me to that page?
CONFUSED, of Britain.

Answer = Teddy Bears can't vote or strap dynamite to their body, walk into a restaurant and kill the patrons! It's much better to use the resources of the teddy bear as a political tool to weaken your enemy’s resolve.
