Vitruvius,
I can not appreciate your wit when presented in Latin.
Posted by: ural at December 2, 2007 1:46 AMThank you for asking, Ural. My quote above, Cum Latine nescias, nolo manus meas in te maculare, simply says, "If you don't understand plain Latin, I'm not going to dirty my hands on you" - tinyurl.com/2dbl9t (I make a point of not using Latin phrases that can't be found out with a simple Google search).
Now, to be clear, I don't speak Latin, I'm using the web to find clever quotes and look up Latin words in my reverse engineering efforts. Be that as it may, I did put some effort into the exercise, as shown in this previous SDA comment: tinyurl.com/2q9cdn &c.
You may well say, Vitruvius, why are you being so petulant? I'll tell you you why. We Canadians live in one of the best situations in the history of man. The average Canadian lives better than Kings did only a few centuries ago.
And yet so many commenters can do nothing but denigrate our great country. You are given an opportunity to suggest a new motto for Canada, to appear on the coat of arms, and you can't even bother to work out something nice in Latin.
Y'all realize of course that this ceaseless infernal btching of yours will keep you out of heaven. I guess I'm just disappointed. But then that's probably a good thing, the last thing y'all want is for me to be appointed. I'm not even pointy.
Posted by: Vitruvius at December 2, 2007 2:21 AMFerox navitas.
Posted by: ural at December 2, 2007 4:07 AMThe average Canadian lives better than Kings did only a few centuries ago.
Yeah, falling for the negativism of the left is what the left wants. Then you're arguing in their area of expertise.
Posted by: ol hoss at December 2, 2007 4:14 AMVitruvius, we Canadians are frittering away the freedom and treasure built by our parents. We are spending our capital. Blowing it like drunken sailors. That's not a game with a future.
So yes, we currently enjoy lives beyond any ancient king's dreams of avarice. This may change if we don't stop pissing about with 60% taxation and get busy building something other than mines. Mines are good, factories are better.
Just ferinstance, wouldn't it be nice if most of the pipe used in the oilsands and the pipelines and the frickin' oil wells were still made in Canada? Not because of some idiot government rule either, but because it was the best and cheapest available. It used to be, and now its not.
We Boomers sold that for Trudeau's bag of magic beans. We Boomers better fix it, or our kids are going to have a problem.
So here's my latest entry into the Canada In Six Words.

Posted by: old white guy at December 2, 2007 10:31 AMHey! I contributed the one in second place "Canada -- A Home for the World." I'm a regular SDA reader and I quite enjoy Kate's blogs and views. I'm not a leftbot at all! I just happen to think our country is amazing, generous, and blessed, despite all its faults.
Thanks for your comments, Vitruvius.
Come on, people. We live in one of the best places in the world, which is why so many from all over the world come to live here (including my grandparents -- this country was a huge blessing for them and their descendents, and their immigration is another reason why I wrote that motto).
SDAers, we who enjoy this blog can love Canada too, you know! It doesn't mean we automatically vote NDP if we say we love our own country.
The other contributions were witty and funny and even somewhat accurate, but we shouldn't have a negative motto for our country! Just sayin' . . .

Posted by: Nicola Timmerman at December 2, 2007 11:42 AM"A home for the world"? Dude, in case you hadn't noticed the majority of the world is a screwed up mess.
How about Cananda: A home for Canadians... and the rest of the world can damn well fix up their own crap-hole countries themselves!
More than six words, but it captures the idea. Trying to be "a home for the world" is half our problem these days. The other half the problem is trying to pay for it.
I like immigrants from Bongo Bongo who come here, set up shop, start in paying taxes and join the Parent/Teacher Aassociation. Awesome, just what we need.
Bongo Bongoites who come and start in preaching death to the Great Satan while they collect welfare and load up Toronto's school board with their numerous, non-English speaking progeny, not so much.
Posted by: The Phantom at December 2, 2007 11:51 AMHey, Phantom: "We Boomers better fix it, or our kids are going to have a problem."
'Couldn't agree more.
'Only problem is, our kids already have a problem: us ageing Boomers, who are going to cost--and already are costing-- them a mint, trouble finding a job after graduating Summa Cum Laude from univeristy, only contract work, no benefits, can't afford a house, etc., etc. all because of PET's toxic bag of magic beans, as you so aptly point out.
Trudopey's Unjust Society is Killing Us!
"And yet so many commenters can do nothing but denigrate our great country. "
Because deep down in the cockles of their tiny right wing hearts, they detest Canada.
Posted by: joey at December 2, 2007 12:41 PMjoey: GIVE ME A BREAK.
We don't denigrate Canada, you nincompoop. We denigrate the forces of darkness and corruption that have blighted this once proud country.
In a word, we denigrate the Librano$, because they've made a pigsty out of our once-beautiful country and a laughing stock of the once dignified proceedings in our House of Commons.
We also denigrate the useful idiots in the MSM, who have happily, because it brings them perks, privileges, and patronage appointments, aided and abetted the sordid goings-on in the Librano back rooms.
Too bad you you can't make the distinction: 'just more collateral damage of the Librano reign of idiocy: No-brains who can't tell the difference between a lamentation and a put-down.
Posted by: 'been around the block at December 2, 2007 1:43 PMNot only have the Libranos made a laughing stock of us in the HOC, they've made us a laughing stock on the world stage.
They still think they have the right to keep on doing it, can't accept the people's choice, they're not IT. Silly Beggar, Deyawn, is trying to make a mockery of our government's position on the environment by going to Bali. What can he do, say Bali Hi, heckle from the back of the room? Not that anyone would understand him!
Their ongoing side/gong show with Schreiber, trying to muddy the Conservatives who had nothing to do with it. Hard to believe we could allow such a spectacle given we are not a Banana Republic given to Kangaroo Courts.
Watching the MSM it appears they're staging scenes and replaying them to get sympathy for their new buddy, jailbird singer KHS. Why would they show him losing his pants? Who needs to see his bum and what's to see?
One would think if you were not allowed to wear a belt you'd wear elasticized pants to prevent them falling.
Poor, poor Mr. Schreiber, yeah right.
Posted by: Liz J at December 2, 2007 4:44 PMI love my country, I love Canada I just hate what liberals are doing to it, and liberals are everywhere,
They outnumber conservatives 10 to 1 in
the media,
Academia,
the courts,
the supreme court,
bureaucracy,
the entertainment industry,
book publishers and so on and so forth
and as Joel at Proud to be Canadian has recently said,
"...Nearly everyone in Canada is now reliant to one degree or another on liberal-leftist state support in the form of taxpayer subsidies, grants, loans, or they work directly for the now fully nanny-state government or a branch thereof, or a crown “corporation”.
Canada is a state that has a state-owned, state-run media, the horrible CBC, which is irreparably, irreducibly far-left Fabian socialist in its very culture ... "
And what about reducing our military ( a liberal thing)
out of control immigration ( a liberal thing )
and always taking the side of immigrants - especially Muslims ( liberals... again )
and never defending western civilization?
some may think I hate Canada but they could not be more wrong.
It is because I love Canada that I hate what liberals are doing to it.
