Airbust?

This may turn out to be worth the price of admission:

Only this time there would be no settlement on the courthouse steps, as in 1997, when the government apologized to Mulroney and his family for calling him a criminal in a letter to Swiss authorities, and acknowledged there had been no case against him in the first place. As for "the settlement," as in the $2.1 million, that's just one more example of shoddy journalism in this case. The settlement consisted of the apology; the $2.1 million was in costs ordered by an arbitrator, the late judge Alan B. Gold, to cover Mulroney's legal and public-relations fees. He never saw a nickel of it. (When Liberal whip Karen Redman accused him of lining his pockets with public money, she was fortunate to have said it in the House, under immunity from a libel suit. Were she ever to repeat it in the foyer, he would sue her down to her socks.)

In rolling the Airbus tape all the way back to Air Canada's acquisition of the A-320s back in 1988, Mulroney knows perfectly well there is no problem in it. He was never involved in the file. And the Air Canada procurement process was transparent and clean. All the airline executives, who would have testified to that in 1997 are still alive, and would be happy to do so again.

No, the story gets interesting in 1995, with the letter to the Swiss, with journalist Stevie Cameron being a confidential informant for the Mounties, with the first exposé on the Fifth Estate.

Here's where the tape stops. Mulroney wants to add new players, "elected officials ... as well as journalists."

Now there's something for everyone in the political village to think about.

Elected officials. That would be Jean Chrétien and his chief of staff, Jean Pelletier, and his senior advise,r Eddie Goldenberg, and his director of communications, Peter Donolo, and the clerk of the Privy Council, Jocelyne Bourgon, and the then-Solicitor- General Herb Gray, and the former justice minister, Allan Rock, and all their officials.

What did they know about the Airbus hoax, and when did they know it. What were their motives, then and later? Was it a diversion from the fact they had almost lost the country in the 1995 referendum? How about Shawinigate, the Auberge Grand Mère loan files, and the naked abuse of power by Chrétien in the case of François Beaudoin?

But here's the kicker: "as well as journalists," meaning all the journalists, particularly from the Globe and Mail and the CBC's Fifth Estate, who have been working this story for the last 12 years, not just the reporters but their bosses. Mulroney would put them all in the box, and journalists and editors aren't allowed to protect their sources at commissions of inquiry.

And then there's the strange circumstance of former Trudeau cabinet minister Marc LaLonde ponying up bail for Karlheinz Schreiber. Curioser and curiouser.

More like an AIRBURST when all the liberati start running for cover.

Harper did warn them.

HOOBOY! The LIEberal House of Cards is about to come crashing down!

It will be a sheer joy to watch this fiasco unfold and a pleasure to see that Canada will rid itself of the Trudeaupian international socialist vision once and for all.

All because of one petty little man who thought he was intellectually brilliant, but had no practical sense whatsoever. Kind of reminds you of an ivory tower elitist, doesn't it? They always fall the farthest and the hardest from their lofty perch.

Posted by: Doug at November 14, 2007 10:18 AM

All depends on the guideposts and budget set out by Harper&Co for the inquiry. If the PM throws open the doors and allows the inquiry to meander into the deep layers of media, political parties and the like, then a lot of crap could hit the fan. It might otherwise be met with a 'meh'.

Posted by: mark peters at November 14, 2007 10:19 AM

Another thought here: The liberal-dominated media are the ones who'll be reporting the gob-smackers of the inquiry, filtering every single word through their editorial spin machine before presenting it to the public for consumption. (Seriously, do you think CBC is going to present the straight goods about its back room shenanigans to the public?!) Being informed means tuning in to at least not-so-liberal outlets like NP and Macleans. One would hope Western Standard places a dedicated reporter on the scene too.

Posted by: mark peters at November 14, 2007 10:27 AM

The Conservatives didn't need this distraction right now.

It will give the Liberals a chance to regroup.

Posted by: TJ at November 14, 2007 10:28 AM

TJ: I agree, thus, Harper should convene the inquiry and let it get on with its business and the conservatives get on with theirs.

There is little, if any, mud to be thrown the way of the current tories. So they should definitely avoid getting caught up in the whole mess and just keep on governing.

While the liberals may be able to re-group (I say may because Dion is such a doorjam) they are still much more fresh in the public mind (and still have relevant people in positions of interest). The mud there is still quite fresh and stinky.

Posted by: Frenchie77 at November 14, 2007 10:35 AM

TJ is right. The media are going to spin this as anti-Harper and the CPC, and the lieberals will equate it with Adscam. The net result will be that the sheep of Ontario will be led to think that the Conservatives are just the same as the Liberals, so why not go back to The Old Firm?

The inquiry will go ahead, however. If it can get into the true story of the real rulers of Canada, Power Corporation and its owners and paid minions, the real source of power behind the facade of democracy in this country, it will do some good. I hope Harper is calling the Liberal/Power Corp army's bluff this time.

Posted by: Patrick B at November 14, 2007 10:37 AM

Mark: Unfortunately, the Western Standard stopped publishing last month. We will have to rely on bloggers like Kate for the best information.

Posted by: Jim O'Brien at November 14, 2007 10:37 AM

The difficulty now, is to hold hearings that reveal JUST enough to satisfy the public, and maybe end up scapegoating a couple of minor players, while protecting the Office of the Prime Minister, and Canada's Emperor, Paul Demerais.

One gets the impression that Canada was for so many years as corrupt as any "banana republic", with politicians and bureaucrats lining their pockets at our expense.

And because most of the last fifty years has seen governments run by the Liberals, most of the corruption will be also run by that august group.

Karlheinz Schreiber has absolutely no credibility, unfortunately, less than a jailhouse informant. Mulroney's lawyer once described Schreiber as a "pathological liar", and it's hard to disagree with that assessment.

Sharpen the guillotine, let the trials begin. I'm off to purchase some knitting needles and wool.

Posted by: dmorris at November 14, 2007 10:38 AM

A public inquiry is not a good thing in and of itself, I agree TJ. It appears to be a necessary evil. Think of it more as the nuclear option.

1) What does KHS have to lose with an inquiry, nothing other than potential conviction for bribery here. HE is already convicted in Germany and he wants to stay here, and he could probably cut a deal to rat if he really did these things

2) BMXPM....he has nothing to lose. In fact this allows him to generate the circus and pull in all sorts of others

3) Harper...wasnt on his watch. I am sure he would rather not have the distraction but whatever gets this out of his in box is a good thing, and hey if it snags the Media and Liberals in the process nothing but upside.

4) Liberals.....hmmm they asked for the public inquiry because they thought Harper and Mulroney would never do it, thus painiting him as defender of BMXPM. Not happeneing, on to plan B...there is no plan B and now they may find others drawn into the muck. They shoudl have asked for the special prosecutor.....watch for them to change their minds

5) The Media.....the initial joy at crucifying BMXPM might now give way as many of those journalist who were a little close to the Liberal party find themselves having to account for their being party mouthpieces. I think a fw reputations will be shred, and probably about time. Cameron lost all credibility, perhaps there will be others.

Days like this I miss Coyne's blog....too bad he went to Macleans at the wrong time, too busy being an editor to write his comments.

This will be expensive and it will be sordid. This will be the Blues vs rouge, this is a Quebec battle for sure.

""Now there's something for everyone in the political village to think about.""
I do love the irony.... Now Maybe these cretins and sleazeballs in the LPC will get the thorough outing they deserve! Eh?

And I really love the fact that Harper openly warned Doofus Prime Dion that may he would not want to start this.
So today a CP reporter actually goes to the background on this story revealing the Liberals communications and apparent scheming with the sleaze Schreiber ( birds of a feather ? )
Liberals Didn't go public ! when they had the info ... rather played up the "controversy" to set the stage for their smarmy little effort to put the smell of scandal on our Prime Minister.

Stephane Dion is such a total fool..... I almost ...that's ALMOST feel sorry for him.

I hope they keep digging and digging deep and wide!

"Schreiber has been in frequent contact with the Liberals, trying to find allies in his fight against extradition to Germany where he faces fraud, bribery and tax evasion charges. He has become something of a technical adviser to the party on the Mulroney affair.
Thibault in particular has met with Schreiber for lunches and coffees in Ottawa to discuss his case, and spoke to him as recently as Tuesday morning about the continuing controversy. He first contacted Schreiber's lawyer last spring, when details of the $300,000 cash payments to Mulroney surfaced.
But Schreiber did not share his key allegation with Thibault that discussions on the payment happened before Mulroney left his post as prime minister."

So,it is clear that The Liberals have been in the brew business for a long time with this man.

Posted by: Buffalo Bean at November 14, 2007 10:52 AM

I have to agree with TJ. The whole point of this media circus surrounding Schreiber is precisely to deflect attention away from the stumbling Dion. Although judging by his performance in question period yesterday, Dion seems incapable of using the help anyway.

The MSM's bias in reporting on this issue could not be more obvious. Why would a prominent Liberal happily post bail for a man like Schreiber? Why would Liberals regularly meet with him, and use a man awaiting extradition on fraud and bribery charges as an "advisor"? Why doesn't any mainstream journalist question the timing of Schreiber's affidavits, which may conveniently help him to avoid deportation yet again?

You won't find answers to these questions in the MSM because they've got more important things to do, like using the self-serving allegations of a blathering snake-oil salesman to discredit conservatives in general, and Stephen Harper in particular.

The difference in the treatment of Harper versus Jean Chretien could not be more glaring.

This inquiry will be a reason to take occasional breaks from watching the much more interesting and relevant Fox New Channel (O'Reilly specifically) and listening to the much more entertaining Rush Limbaugh and Dennis Miller streaming radio shows.

Even though Canada isn't much more than a folder on the American Hard Drive, occasionally there is an interesting file to check out.

With winter setting in, this Liberal assault on the much smarter, Mulroney and Harper people will no doubt bring some smiles for us and some stomach aches for many on the other side.

The older Power Corp Libs will not be happy about what Dion will hath wrought. Those Bilderbergers don't like their minions to have daylight upon them ... just like the Vampires that they are.

Mark et al,

What you didn't consider is that the Media is a competitive business. If the CBC looks bad, you can count on Global and CTV splashing it front and center 24/7. The reverse being true as well.

The media will turn on each other as easily as a liberal will turn on a conservative.

I can't wait. I just hope the inquiry is broadened to include Martin and Chretien's scummy dealings. Why should they get off?

Posted by: Warwick at November 14, 2007 11:23 AM

And why is LaLonde vacationing in Havana?

He can afford better.

Posted by: Duncan at November 14, 2007 11:29 AM

If it is to be a 'public' enquiry, then let's have it public. With Gomery it was shown daily in Quebec and it had a strong impact.
In Ontario, nobody watched it nor was it readily available as I recall. The public perception then in Ontario was quite different than in Quebec.
We need this particular set of dirty laundry aired publically covered gavel to gavel.
This ends the ability of the msm to spin it, though they will anyway.
It would be worth it to see Chretien , LaLonde, and all the Chretienites squirming on the stand on this one. This is a can of worms worthy of the lowliest worm.
Let's make the taxpayers money be actually worth something instead of down the black hole of the CBC while they wax the shine they put on us all the time.

Posted by: Snowbunnie at November 14, 2007 11:58 AM

Here's an interesting conspiracy theory. Lalonde and possibly other liberals have put up Schreibers bail.

Could Schreiber have been an agent of the liberals all along?

Perhaps he got a little of the loot from adscam, and used some of that loot to suck Mulroney into the pasta deal with the long range intention of being able to paint it as something else in the future.

We know the liberals had a huge pile of undocumented cash from adscam in the 90's, they're certainly not above dirty tricks, and there's not many people more suited to framing a politician than Schreiber.

skuleman, Mulroney is a Power Corp. player, as is the rest of the Liberal mafiosa. What has happened is a quarrel amongst cousins that has been exposed to the light.

And for others, the Gomery Commission proceedings was blogged about by Captains Quarters, opening the flood gates and forcing the proceedings to be publicly heard. If Kate can convince him, I'm hopeful that CQ can do Canadians that favour again. Fear not.

Posted by: Eeyore at November 14, 2007 12:16 PM

The Chretienites ran a strawman trials all the time...they just got stung on the last one...the key is you gotta be in POWER to keep the inventigators from sniffing back to Librano dirty laundry....they tried to do another strawman trial with Gomery but Martin was too wealk a leader to keep the investigation away from the PMO....this time they are totally out of control of where the investigators go...and my thinking is similar to MacDonald's in that this can hurt the Liberals mire than the Tories if/when it leads back to the Chretien PMO again and their sycophants in the media.

Muldoom was a crook..a sly one...but he wasn't as obvious or openly vulgar about it as Chretien and Dithers were with their grafting....when we go digging fed dirt there is a lot more Librano puffin poop lying near the surface than there are Mulroney scats.

A smart partisan MSM scribbler would know that but then who ever said they were intelligent?

This should finish the Liberal Party of Canada. A whole bunch of really bad grandstanding to get Harper to hopefully not call an inquiry?

Everything Harper does is planned. He already had a good idea what was going on and knows the potential pros and cons of an Public Inquiry. The reward outweighs whatever risk there might be, and by a good margin.

Posted by: Krydor at November 14, 2007 12:39 PM

I still think that it would be very worthwhile to look at the money trail around Schreiber. Who's paying his legal bills, who are his lawyers' other clients (a very good way to funnel money to someone), who pays his other bills, his family's bills etc. There are lots of ways to move money to someone under the table. (Adscam seems to have netted the liberals 10's of millions of dollars. They obviously didn't spend it on elections so its either been squirreled away somewhere or been used for things they can't use legitimate party funds for.)

That's also why the $300K doesn't smell bad to me. Mulroney is a lawyer and if he wanted to get an illegal payoff he should have known a hundred ways to do it so it wasn't traceable. Cash in an envelope isn't one. I also doubt either he or Schreiber would schlep around with large chunks of cash. Its just too risky.

Now a cash-equivalent, like a bank draft makes perfect sense and is a perfectly legitimate way to pay a contract, especially if its with someone who is a) a foreign national or b)has an iffy credit rating. I wouldn't be surprised if the "cash" payment turns out to be a conventional "cash-equivalent" payment, which would embarrass the hell out of a lot of people, especially if Mulroney issued an invoice for the work :-)

Posted by: skuleman at November 14, 2007 12:42 PM

"Here's an interesting conspiracy theory. Lalonde and possibly other liberals have put up Schreibers bail."

Elmer McKay was a Liberal?

"Two former Canadian cabinet ministers agreed to put up $100,000 each to help secure Schreiber's release.

The offers came from Elmer Mackay who served as Solicitor General under Brian Mulroney, and from former Liberal Justice Minister Marc Lalonde. Both men described Schreiber as as good friend."

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/1999/09/08/schreiber990908.html

Posted by: Brendan Kane at November 14, 2007 12:49 PM

Ok, if Elmer Mackay is involved, then that brings into question the involvement of his son, our Minister of Defense. Maybe some of this stick on the Harper government. All it takes is for Karlheinz to give an avidavit that he gave or loaned money to his good friend Elmer's son. It doesn't matter to KH if it is true, he just has to say it and it will be treated as fact.

KH has nothing to lose in this which makes him very dangerous.

My hope is that the recommendation of the independent adviser is that KH be extradited as planned and the inquiry can move to Germany when it is time to question him. Sure it might be more expensive (in theory) but taxpayers save the housing costs for KH (since we have to imprison him here) and I suspect his story will change once again when there is no advantage to him to stick with the current version. Thus cutting the inquiry short and saving us money in the long run.

If all this causes that rat bastard Allan Rock to come a cropper, it will be worth every penny.

We don't need to send the whole inquiry to Germany, just need to have an agreement with the Germans that when he needs to testify, we send a couple of RCMP over to pick him up, and we return him when we're done with him. There's enough cargo flights going over to Afghanistan, we don't even need to spring for airfare, just move him back & forth in the belly of a Herc :-)

Things to ponder:

Both ehe Libranos and Muldoom were successful in Quebec because they played the payola game with the syndicate...the lkiberal pointman there was LaLonde...Muldoom's point man was Roc Lasalle...Chretien PET and Muldoom have many mutual business/political acquaintances in the seedy syndicate infused sub culture.

Anyone who starts turning up rocks from that era is sure to release a few well hidden wigglers which will swim upstrean and attach themselves to a Liberal cabinate/PMO official...dumb f'ing move by the LPC spin team and Borat Dion...the puffin poop is about to come oozing out on the political landscape.

What does it say about your little hero Prime Minister Harper that with ALL of the levers of government at his disposal, with a political war chest overflowing with millions of dollars to spend however they want, wih a very compliant media (despite your collective shrill rantings about MSM bias, the bias has been distinctly pro-Harper for some time now) you are still in a TIE with Stephane Dion, who you regard as being the worst politician this century?

Perhaps this incredible bluster about your collective invincibility is a tad overstated....

You also might remember, that unlike most things in this current government, a public inquiry is not subject to crass political manipulation for partisan benefit as easily as you would like - it might be worth remembering that it is not being called for the sole purpose of trying to tarnish Liberals, not matter how much you wish it to be so (unlike that so-called polling investigation which is effectively using public dollars to pursue a private political agenda).

It is quite instructive that you seem to believe that a public inquiry should also be yours to manipulate.

Posted by: Stephen at November 14, 2007 9:09 PM

Who said anything about defeating this government? I personally don't care that much and am not currently active in politics. I just occasionally peer into this partisan cesspool of self reinforcing pre-conceived notions club (and others - don't consider yourselves special) to get a kick out of the latest conspiracy theories being trotted out by those with the blinders on.

No, sadly it appears that the schoolyard taunt school of politics is alive and well and currently finding favour with too much of the electorate and as such, Conservatives have a reasonable chance of winning the next election.

Funny - not sure why they want to win at this point, other than to behave just as their hated predecessors did and spend even more tax dollars to preserve political power and avoid actually making any real changes...

I don't think there will be a public inquiry.

Public reason:

The terms of reference set by David Lloyd Johnston will be to not go ahead with a full public inquiry because this is an issue between two private citizens. The use of the public purse to repair or defend Mulroney's reputation is not a just use of tax dollars.

Real reason:

The "liberal establishment (political & media)" says make this go away before the public finds out what really went down. Harper obliges for the good of the country.

Next: Election majority and then Dion who?

Good call LEDA.

I've been thinking that as well. The only thing this call for an inquiry has going for it is the sworn affridavit by a guy facing deportation to face trial in Germany. KHS has contridicted himself in writing, and the fact is that Dr Johnson is tasked with advising the government how it should proceed with respect to KHS latest sworn testimony, nothing more like say if the PM reads letters prevailing on him to intervene in a deportation (sort of like how Chretien did for Papa Khadir).
You can tell the liberals have realized this by the sudden accusations that Dr Johnson is in conflict of interest.

Me, I'll be getting stocked up on beer and popcorn.

- The PM has forwarned the Opposition last week: "Watch what you wish for..."

- Ian L. Macdonald (Very knowledgeable on the whole affair and our MSM mainman to get our cleanest info from) made Duffy check his pacemaker when he dropped his prediction bomb yesterday: "CBC, Libranos watch out, it's payback time" (Not in those words but you get the jist of it)

- Average Canuck?: (Excerpt from CTV):
When respondents were asked whether they supported examining the allegations, 67 per cent said yes and 22 per cent no.

Among Conservative members, 57 per cent wanted the matter investigated, while 32 per cent were against the idea. Liberals were slightly higher than the national average, with 74 per cent in support and 17 per cent against.

Harper has named David Lloyd Johnston, the president of the University of Waterloo, to probe the Mulroney-Schreiber affair and decide on a mandate for a full public inquiry.

The poll suggests a total of 51 per cent of Canadians believe Harper has done a "good job" of handling the matter:

Total good job: 51 per cent
Very good job: 8 per cent
Good job: 43 per cent
Poor job: 23 per cent
Very poor job: 8 per cent
Total poor job: 30 per cent
However, slightly more than half of respondents believe Harper may have covered up what he knew about the Schreiber's claims:

Total believe: 51 per cent
Strongly believe: 17 per cent
Somewhat believe: 34 per cent
Somewhat disbelieve: 19 per cent
Strongly disbelieve: 14 per cent
Total disbelieve: 34 per cent
Donolo said the results show Harper has not fully succeeded in distancing himself from the affair, despite repeated statements he has never personally dealt with Schreiber. The prime minister has also said he never received a copy of a letter addressed to Mulroney that Schreiber sent him.

"It means he hasn't got an infinite amount of rope on this issue," said Donolo. "Canadians are willing to trust him but only so far on this issue."

During question period Wednesday, Liberal Leader Stephane Dion asked if Harper would "commit to a full public inquiry that includes himself, his government and his minister of justice."

Harper shot back that "sooner or later it will dawn on even the leader of the Liberal party that the events didn't occur under this government."

- Already Peter Mansbridge showed signs of being nervous last night...IMO: The CBC is the ultimate prize of the whole affair: How much time and cash has been spent going after BM? Who in the PMO was pulling strings/also directing RCMP?

I am also stocking up on beer and popcorn...This is going to fun.
(Forget the popcorn...I get "Scott Reid" stomach ache, change that to Doritos)

Schreiber is so crooked, he has to screw his socks on in the morning! As for paying "Blood Money" to obtain contracts, I beleive in order to find the origin of that procedure, you'd have to study the construction of the Roman aquaducts,. I beleive there is reference to "Payola."
