Reader Tips

Tips thread.

This is technically a request for assistance, not a reader tip, but if you'll allow me Kate, as a friend of SDA, I'd like to know if anyone can recommend to me any classic musical artists who were known for humming a good tune.

I've been working on an essay on pre-verbal vocalization and the similarities and differences between the human tuned reeded standing-wave generating system and other living and mechanical instances thereof, and I've got great Google video examples of throat singing, yodelling, and whistiling, but I've not been able to find any good public examples of humming (other than a couple I've recorded).

So if anyone could forward any suggestions to vitruvius2 via gmail, thanks, and anyway, thanks everyone for putting up with this interruption.

Drop me an email, I may have one for you.

Oh, come on, Heinrichs, give me a break. I asked for email because its generally considered proper etiquette under circumstances like these, especially considering the note in re private email in the comment section below, and you request I respond to you without even providing a way to do so?

I mean, I hate to be a pest, but if you're going to take up a whole comment anyway, why not just state your recommendation?

Did I mention that I'm a student of information enthalpy ;-)

Ont. appeal court rules against Ottawa newspaper in defamation suit
By THE CANADIAN PRESS
TORONTO - Ontario's appeal court ruled against the Ottawa Citizen on Tuesday over a case in which a former provincial police officer accused the newspaper of defamation.

Danno Cusson, an Ontario provincial police constable, went to New York City of his own accord to participate in the rescue effort after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and was portrayed by media as a hero.

The Ottawa Citizen published three articles suggesting Cusson misrepresented himself as an RCMP officer who was formally trained in K-9 search and rescue techniques.

The Ontario Provincial Police ordered Cusson, who later resigned, to return to his duties in Ottawa.

Cusson sued the Citizen over the three articles on the grounds they were defamatory. The claim on one article was dismissed, but the paper was ordered to pay Cusson $100,000 over the other two. ...-

A public inquiry into Airbus affair would be a great show
People should be careful about Mulroney - he's not a guy you would want to mess with
L. IAN MACDONALD, The Gazette
[...]

No, the story gets interesting in 1995, with the letter to the Swiss, with journalist Stevie Cameron being a confidential informant for the Mounties, with the first exposé on the Fifth Estate.

Here's where the tape stops. Mulroney wants to add new players, "elected officials ... as well as journalists."

Now there's something for everyone in the political village to think about.

Elected officials. That would be Jean Chrétien and his chief of staff, Jean Pelletier, and his senior advise,r Eddie Goldenberg, and his director of communications, Peter Donolo, and the clerk of the Privy Council, Jocelyne Bourgon, and the then-Solicitor- General Herb Gray, and the former justice minister, Allan Rock, and all their officials.

What did they know about the Airbus hoax, and when did they know it. What were their motives, then and later? Was it a diversion from the fact they had almost lost the country in the 1995 referendum? How about Shawinigate, the Auberge Grand Mère loan files, and the naked abuse of power by Chrétien in the case of François Beaudoin?

What a show this would be.

But here's the kicker: "as well as journalists," meaning all the journalists, particularly from the Globe and Mail and the CBC's Fifth Estate, who have been working this story for the last 12 years, not just the reporters but their bosses. Mulroney would put them all in the box, and journalists and editors aren't allowed to protect their sources at commissions of inquiry.

And then there's Karlheinz Schreiber, who is currently in a Toronto jail fighting an extradition order to Germany on charges of tax evasion and fraud. It is clear that he will do, and say, anything, to stay in this country, including dragging Stephen Harper into it in a couple of letters that could have been written by your crazy aunt. He's giving jailhouse interviews as if he were Nelson Mandela or Martin Luther King. These are not great moments in investigative journalism. [...]
he [Mulroney] is saying very clearly: Bring it on. This is not a guy you want to wake up. ...-

maz2: Good post.
Not great moments in investigative journalism for sure but since when have the conniving excuses for journalists investigated beyond their own biases?

There will be a good run on Depends among the media and Liberal ranks when this one is over. Mulroney is in fighting mode to clear his name.

It's the same old story, Liberals can commit all manner of sleaze, fraud, outright corruption and all is forgiven. Conservatives are never permitted so much as a white lie, they must be pure as driven snow.

We should worry about this country and the makeup of the people who vote with the attitude, what's in it for me? They're willing to join in on the TAKE at the expense of the common good, its the reason we've had Liberals in power, the party of all things to all people and no holds barred to keep power.

Yahoo Acknowledges Role in Arrest of Chinese Dissidents

US Internet giant Yahoo has repeatedly come under fire for its close collaboration with China's communist regime. This week it acknowledged responsibility for the arrest of dissidents and moved to settle a case against two Chinese journalists serving 10-year prison sentences.

While no amounts were named, the gesture speaks volumes. On Tuesday, American Internet giant Yahoo agreed to settle a lawsuit brought against the company by jailed Chinese dissidents Shi Tao and Wang Xiaoning and to provide them with "financial, humanitarian and legal support."

In recent weeks, Yahoo -- which the suit accused of helping the Chinese government to jail and torture the two regime-critical journalists -- has been the subject of intense scrutiny by the United States Congress, where a panel lambasted the Silicon Valley company for collaborating with an oppressive regime. After a contentious hearing before the panel last week attended by family members of the convicted men, the company moved to settle.

"Having met with the families, it was clear that we had to do this for them, for Yahoo and for the future," said CEO Jerry Yang. The company also announced that it will set up a humanitarian fund for Chinese regime critics and their families. [...]

In 2004, China sentenced the men to 10 years imprisonment following convictions on charges of disclosing state secrets and "incitement to overthrow the state." The men claim they were tortured in prison. [...]

Last week, Callahan admitted to the congressional committee that Yahoo employees had indeed been informed about the nature of the government's interest but that this only came to his attention after he testified before Congress. ...-

Pretty straight forward and savage enough. But, then, I noticed right beside this a companion piece, an interview with a typical clueless misguided lefty priest:

Bianchi (photo) said Italy was facing a "critical situation" because waves of immigrants were coming from poor countries. He said the government and individuals needed to do more to make immigrants welcome.

"There is no will to really do something for them, we push them into crime," Bianchi said. "We should ask ourselves what is the meaning of reception if we can't give them a house or food."

"There is no will to really do something for them, we push them into crime and this causes xenophobia."

Here's another, Penny:

A 19 year old woman managed Sunday evening to escape from her torturer, a Danish citizen of Lebanese background.

She had been held captive for 9 days in a shed in the Sydhavnen district of Copenhagen where she had been beaten with an electric cable and subjected to other acts of violence by her boyfriend, a 19 year old Danish citizen from Lebanon. Sunday afternoon she managed to break out of her prison, climbed a fence and broke into a store, where she found a telephone and called her family.

The woman is now in hospital with extensive body damages. She had received almost nothing to eat and drink during the nine days. She has bruises from the beating and burns from cigarettes and from molten plastic that has been dripped onto her body. Her front teeth are knocked out, she has bleedings in both eyes, she has stab wounds all over her body and possibly a broken mandible. Part of her hair is burned away and her finger and toe nails are damaged, probably caused by pliers according to the police. A piece of her right thumb is missing.

She has extensive burn lesions on her legs from previous episodes of violence. The burns are caused by boiling water according to her own statement.

The violence has taken place over a period of one year, but has escalated drastically during the last month, according to the girl. The man threatened to kill her family if she reported him. Also, he has forbidden her to speak to her mother, because she is a Christian.

She is now under police protection, from fear that the family of the young man will try to harm her.

Canada imposes 'toughest sanctions' against Burma

TORONTO - Advocating a new "international realism" in Canadian foreign policy, Foreign Affairs Minister Maxime Bernier announced sweeping new sanctions against Burma on Wednesday.

The repression in Burma, also known as Myanmar, has grown worse in the past weeks and months," Bernier said. "People are being arrested, people are being tortured and people are being killed. Peaceful demonstrations by unarmed Buddhist monks were met with bullets."

He condemned Burma's ruling military junta for fostering a record of destruction, forced labour, systematic rape, the use of child soldiers, illegal drug trafficking, and for failing to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS.

"Each of these factors contravenes what our foreign policy stands for," he said. "Each is rejected by governments of countries we share our values of freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law. Each is an affront to the United Nations Charter."

"The question is simple," he declared. "What can we Canadians do? What can we do as Canadians to force change?"

His answer was to announce what he described as "the toughest sanctions in the world" against Burma. ...-

Here's an interesting letter from the Toronto Star Letters page:

"I read with complete bewilderment about Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion's commitment to reduce child poverty in Canada by 50 per cent in five years. Nowhere in the article was there any hint of irony that this promise comes almost 18 years to the day when Parliament unanimously endorsed then NDP leader Ed Broadbent's motion to eliminate child poverty by 2000.

During the time that has passed – much of it under Liberal rule – the federal government accumulated massive surpluses, while child poverty increased. Given the Liberals' pitiful record, and the fact that they have no plan but only a pledge to reach this extremely modest goal, I can't believe a single word.

Sarah Ramsey, Toronto"

That says it all. Promises are easy to make and easier to break.

Pathologist inquiry judge rebukes Toronto paper

The inquiry judge looking into mistakes by an Ontario pathologist in several child death cases has strongly rebuked a Toronto newspaper for violating the inquiry's publication ban, saying such breaches re-victimize families involved in the cases.
