Nov.6 Update - At least some of the students involved were at the campaign office of Terry Alm today to offer their apologies. They will be helping the SaskParty take down signs after the election.
Page info shows:
Andrew Rowan (Aden Bowman Collegiate) Assistant Captain
Taylor Andreas (Aden Bowman Collegiate) Assistant Captain
Brennan Rutherford (Walter Murray Collegiate) Co-Captain of Destruction
Mike Pinder (Aden Bowman Collegiate) Driver
David Fodey (Aden Bowman Collegiate) Co-Captain of Destruction
Will Hamilton (Aden Bowman Collegiate) (creator)
You'll need a facebook account to access the page. Currently, the group has 59 "members" - most appear to be high school students at Aden Bowman and Walter Murray Collegiate.
If you have kids at these Saskatoon schools, you may recognize some names.
Update - "Hey dude, I heard your name on the radio"
The owner of the property in the photo above just called John Gormley Live (linked above). He's a little ticked off. In the comments - "It's as if they reported themselves to Crimestoppers."
In a case of the apple not falling far from.... the apple - " Do a search on Facebook for [U of Sask Sheaf Editor-In-Chief] Chuck Hamilton. View his friends, and you will see Will Hamilton is listed as his brother. I bet their parents are proud." (Or it was until Will's was pulled.)
More at No-Libs.
Update 2 - Now the Canadian Press has picked up the story.
Update 3 - There are NDP family ties to the Fodey kid as well.

Posted by: Stephen at November 5, 2007 9:20 AMI wonder if the penalties under the elections act apply to "youth"?
Clearly these acts are the pre-meditated actions of kids old enough to know what they are doing.
Posted by: Andrew at November 5, 2007 9:21 AMThese people have broken a federal law. Should they not be charged? Or are they also above the law like the balance of the NDP campaign...
Posted by: bss59 at November 5, 2007 9:22 AMOf course they should be charged. Nice to see the shallow end of the petri dish is getting even weaker as they document with photo's and comments their stupidity.
Posted by: Talkinghead at November 5, 2007 9:27 AMgiven Jim Fodey's record thats probably his kid in the picture.
looks like this bunch has declared themselves guilty by making a listing of members and posting pictures. as youth they will declare themselves naive of the law.
Posted by: cal2 at November 5, 2007 9:28 AMMaybe it is an new NDP youth employment/pest removal strategy modified from the old gopher bounty program. Instead of 2 cents for a gopher tail the teens get paid on a per sign destroyed basis.
Posted by: LynnH at November 5, 2007 9:34 AMThese boys need a good ol' prairie style hide whoopin' and no computer for six months!
Only problem is that their parents are socialists and will only send them to more therapy.

Posted by: Kate at November 5, 2007 9:50 AMHa!! love that facebook!...the kids just can't hold back anything.
Who needs security cameras with these kids proudly doing digitals of their 'group' breaking the law?
Hmmmm, seems like a good sentence (If I were the judge) would be 100hours each community service erecting Sask Party signs at their own expense with their negligent parents helping with funding for the signs.
Posted by: johnboy at November 5, 2007 10:03 AMMy friends and I made some youthful “indiscretions” way back in a different era. But we sure as hell were scared of getting caught and made detailed plans to avoid it. Not getting caught was where the excitement was. With these guys, leaving their trail of evidence, it appears that they get their kicks from being defiant. Interesting to see if it will all end in tears for them.
Posted by: Cal at November 5, 2007 10:10 AMLooks like a great opportunity for some "Red Forman" discipline.... Gotta love a classic "dumbass" !
Posted by: OMMAG at November 5, 2007 10:15 AMGuess these "kids" are not afraid of consequences. There is no fear of their parents or the law.
In my day, everything I did, I knew that I would have to face my DAD!
Cal that's a good point. When I was a young lad I did get up to a bit of mischief, but the whole point was not to get caught.
And I have always been rather proud to say that I never idolized anything the left had to offer, even in my youth.
I hope these kids get their comeuppance. Maybe they should be forced to install a few hundred signs for the Sask. Party.
Posted by: TJ at November 5, 2007 10:20 AMCan't wait until the police become aware of this group. Nothing like breaking the law and then posting evidence of doing it, photos and confessions and the like. Some little buggers are about to wish they'd never used the web.
Posted by: Len at November 5, 2007 10:36 AMThey just had their names read off for the entertainment of 100,000 radio listeners...
Posted by: Kate at November 5, 2007 10:40 AMHhahahahha
Posted by: pob at November 5, 2007 11:00 AMIt is incredibly thoughtful of them to fully document all of their activities and to provide information as to which school they'll be at today. The police won't need to gather any information and they won't have waste any time looking for them.
It's as if they reported themselves to Crimestoppers.
Posted by: meesh at November 5, 2007 11:01 AMThey are used to not having to deal with consequences from being in high school. Wouldn't want to hurt junior's self esteem now would we?

Posted by: Richard Evans at November 5, 2007 11:19 AMThey're going to have to call themselves the "New SK Just Jot Our Asses Kicked Party"
Just the mentality of the NDP youth groups encouraged by their parents no doubt.
Posted by: Norm at November 5, 2007 11:26 AMSounds like the NDP parents are pretty desperate when they get children to do the dirty work that they won't do because as adults they would be carged.
This NDP tactic is similar to drug dealers using children to do their dirty work.
Sad state of affairs for the NDP to stoop this low.
Posted by: RL at November 5, 2007 11:32 AMSo, when these idiots get out of college etc and apply for jobs will they put this on their resume. And, if they ever want to run for office will this come back and bite them you know where.
Can't wait for the cbc to whitewash this, or for jack layton to condem this action on his behalf.
Today's youth have no respect for authority (parents, law) anymore, particularly those in left-wing households (who are, by nature, more prone to criminal and/or anti-social behaviour)

Posted by: Richard Evans at November 5, 2007 12:04 PMThis is another important reason why the Left is on the wane. Most civilized people regardless of their leanings, don't like thuggery.
The Left has consistently shown itself to be an loose organization of pure criminal thugs, drug and sex deviants at the bottom right up to vicious unionists in the middle ranks and collectivist communist freedom hating elitists at it's top end.
No normal reasoned person wants these people in charge of a civil society.
So keep it up kids, what you are kicking is your own political party right where it hurts. Works for me.

Posted by: john at November 5, 2007 12:47 PMAn fitting penalty would be to have the kids wear SP signs (sandwich-style) for a few days. Then have them work at an poll station to learn about the importance of elections in our democracy.

Posted by: Steve at November 5, 2007 2:14 PMIf Brad Wall was smart - and according to messaging I keep reading on SDA, he's pretty much the second coming of Reagan, Gingrich, Gandhi, and Moses! - he should respond directly to this by meeting with the kids. All partisan boobery aside, I think it'd be a great move. He could publicly say that he hopes the police don't press charges - and then take the kids to places where their energy could do some actual good: soup kitchens, homeless shelters, an animal shelter, etc.
(For the record, I would have no problem with the kids being charged. Anyone who advertises their crime is simply begging for some justice.)

This story is up at the G&M, and it is mentioned that the fine for destroying an election sign is 5,000.00 and 2 yrs in jail. Wonder if those idiots knew that. Charge them and fine them, suspend sentences until they pull another stunt, get a DUI, speeding ticket or whatever. If one of them do something to break probation, all will have their probation cancelled. If charged with something, and found guilty, it will bar them from the US, and put them all on the no fly list.
Their 15 minutes of fame could turn into a lifetime of shame.
Mary T,
Of course nobody will know because they are minors and arent supposed to have their names mentioned.....
But yes that is the path that would happen.
I am sure their parents are horrified at the stupidity of publicizing their actions, whether they are equally bothered by the actions that are documented is another matter.

i know 5 of the leaders and at least four of them have had there parents get a divorce
I also know that the four kids I know well have at least a 80 % and that at least one of them is on the high honour roll
These kids think its right because they have seen on tv the hate ads by both parties and think the way that they make a point is by making the other party look bad

Posted by: Justthinkin at November 5, 2007 6:21 PM"george asks, "how come so much sadistic satisfaction in some comments?"
Because it's SDA, silly. We tell other people that it's a place to "debate the issues," but really, we just like slagging off whomever we don't like. Also, speaking personally, I find that airing my opinions among others whom I know will agree with me all the time helps to validate my own self-worth.

@Jennifer:
What you descibe as "I find that airing my opinions among others whom I know will agree with me all the time helps to validate my own self-worth" is a slightly exaggerated description of normal socializing. Just to let ya know.
surely there isn't anyone here, who really thinks anything will happen to these young adults! they are, the way they are, because thats the way they have been parented, so why would anyone here, think something might happen to them when they get home! ( mom or dad are probably their "best friends") If they were ever found guilty in a court, the best ruling by a judge might be, "that if you like to take down signs, maybe you 6 or 8 or 12 kids should be responsible to take down every sign in the entire city!"

In the secular progressive's world, anything is excusable, including dumping a load of manure on a former field goal kicker's lawn.
Just another form of artistic impression, don't ya know?
I love how this is rationalized in these budding lefties' minds. It's cuz the mean old Sask Party has more money for Ads.

Posted by: chris at November 5, 2007 9:25 PMLawn signs are always a point in elections. Seems like they are meant to be an indicator of how much support a candidate has, window dressing. Unfortunately they're not really an accurate indicator of support by any means. I can remember in elections past as an Alliance campaign worker we were always fighting the "sign war" and there were the childish idiots whom I presume were Liberals stealing our signs. Did it influence the election? Perhaps it had a small effect but unlikely. Still, as my mom always told me; its the thought that counts!

Posted by: VoteDevineIn'07 at November 5, 2007 9:39 PMWith all due respect I would like to try my hand at a synthesis of this thread.
Stupid kids thrash election signs and brag about it on internet. Kate spots the play and points bad behavior out. Folks express disgust and begin to yen for "back in the day". Others check in and proclaim "kids will be kids."
Updates roll in and it appears there might be a connection between the little darlings and the editor in cheef of the Sheaf.
A thinking person wonders. Pissing match ensues.
Conservatives are mean to their kids...liberals kind.
Reality.
One of my sons did $6000.00 vandalism damage along with two of his friends when he was 13. His mom and I are divorced, both his buddies live in "intact families'.
When the shit hit the fan the other parents stepped up and dropped four grand to "divert" their chillin from the court system.
The ex and I discussed things and took the other road. No money. Face the consequences of YO court and the economic consequences.
Community service and the 2K. He had to ride two busses after school to get to the jobsite I was working on for two hours of picking garbage. Every day until he was clear.
The day he paid his shit off I gave him a K. Sticks and carrots...but no carrots until you man up.
To me that is what conservative is about...help with correction and they will become self correcting.

Posted by: Mark at November 6, 2007 2:56 AMSynchro l- Great story and I admire the way you handled it. There is so little accountability for bad behaviour. This is mainly due to two things: 1. Bad (or no) parenting, and 2. Youth Criminal Justice system. But then why should the YCJ system be any different than our "catch and release" program for adult offenders. I sure hope the Harper government's Crime bill gets passed and soon.
Posted by: a different Bob at November 6, 2007 8:56 AMjohn and george, who think this is a tempest in a teapot, are, IMO, either woefully ignorant or wilfully obtuse about today's youth, Justthinkin and a different Bob have got it about right. (Syncrodox too: I salute you!)
Since the Charter, kids' "rights" have become sacrosanct. Just about everyone—parents and schools—are afraid to discipline them. We now have a crop of entitled "toddlers" who think they can do whatever they like—and get away with it. In most cases, they would be right. As Yukon Gold observes, with our future in the hands of so many irresponsible louts, we're in big trouble.
Note that Rudy Guiliani turned New York around by using the "Broken Window" approach: hit the kids hard on their first offence. For most, it'll be their last. Overlook the first offence and the few after and they escalate.
I see this happening all the time in the public school system. The Behaviour Codes are only for show: they say what behaviours are supposed to occur. When the codes are broken, as they are countless times every day, administration caves. Consequences? Too"punitive”: the kids and their parents might get upset. Overwhelmed by the sheer volume of anti-social behaviours in their schools, administration soon turns a blind eye. “Hear no evil, see no evil” is probably board policy now for administrators, they so rarely do anything constructive to deal with the very serious misdemeanours of the growing number of miscreants in our midst.
The arrogant and destructive behaviour of these young men is no small thing: it shows the utmost disrespect for the rights of others. If that's the mindset that motivates them, stay tuned for more self-referential, selfish, anti-social behaviour. I don't think they're the kind of people one would want for an employee, a son-in-law, or father of one's grandchildren. Yes, PMSH’s Crime Bills, which, I believe, will contain some "Broken Window" provisions, can’t come too soon.
BTW, george and john, if you discovered a baby python or scorpion in your basement, would you say, “Don’t worry, it’s just little”? Smarten up, guys.
I know you kids are reading this. I hope you enjoyed your moment of fame and feel real proud of your so-called couragous acts. You all look like idiots.
I dare you to find some real courage and every last one of you individually appologize to the homeowners and candidates whose property you vandalized. Offer your help as restitution. Too chicken? I thought so.

I am a divorced conservative but no less real then when I was married. FYI we have been divorced for about ten years so I think the boy has had time to adjust and frankly I don't buy the root cause chorus BS. His, mine, hell all of our circumstances are what they are. The cards are dealt and what matters is how we play them.
The fact is I grew up in an intact home and got into more than my share of shit. The real problem with the boy is he's more like me than me. Strong willed and a little rough around the edges. Which were both contributing factors in my divorce.
That said, My job as his dad is to show him that there are consequences for his behavior both positive and negative. Strong personality characteristics can be the source of much strength and at the same time our greatest weakness.
In short.....As an individual I need to learn how to operate my own badass self...so does the boy.

Posted by: syncrodox at November 6, 2007 10:27 AMHere's an idea for some constructive discipline. Replacing and putting up more signs is a little late at this point in the campaign, but since they wanted to take down signs . . .
After the election, have them collect, neatly stack and return signs to the candidates' campaign offices (under parental supervision of course).
And today's award for " Going Off On A Tangent And Getting Lost" goes to:
Knight of Good Mr. Iron Man, for his thoughts on lawn signs are boring anyhow. Vandalism is still vandalism, whether or not the signs are effective is irrelevant. Your picket fence in your yard doesn't work because I can jump over it so therefore I can destroy it because it is boring...
Posted by: Texas Canuck at November 6, 2007 10:49 AMRJW, well said! Your consequences are exactly the kind that are needed: first, acknowledge the wrongdoing: forget the excuses; second, apologize for it; third, do something constructive, that costs some humility, time, and effort, in order to provide restitution to the victim(s).
I like your challenge to these young men: I hope they have the cojones to take you up on it.
Unfortunately, even if they want to do the right thing, there will probably be a phalanx of ill-adjusted "adults" who will defend these boys' "right" to be coddled and excused. I see it all the time. And, as all kinds of posters have said, no wonder these kids behave the way they do.
That said, enough is enough: it's time they face the music. (In the short run, this actually shows respect for them by holding them to a high standard of behaviour; in the long run, accountability will benefit them and the rest of us. Win/win.)
Posted by: lookout at November 6, 2007 10:54 AMGuess these "kids" are not afraid of consequences. There is no fear of their parents or the law.

On second reading, it appears as though downwithsigns meant "you" to refer to John Gormley. Though by harping on his/her spelling and grammar, I kind of look like an asshole too.
Posted by: lookout at November 6, 2007 8:35 PMThe creator of the group and his fellow criminals masterminds are from affluent homes on the city's east side. This is not a case of poverty run amok. Unfortunately, I can say from knowing the family of Will Hamilton that the concept of entitlement, and spoiled brat syndrome, is a family tradition and I'm sure that nothing will be done at home to remedy this.
Oh and for interest sake - the father is a fairly well respected doctor and the mother a lawyer (how's that for irony).
I wonder why Hamilton and his crew failed to knock down the sign that adorns his own mother's front yard??
Posted by: concerned at November 6, 2007 9:51 PMBrian - the mother of the Hamilton kid is a lawyer but not for the CRC - she works for a non-profit organization in the city. The info on the dad is correct.
Posted by: concerned at November 6, 2007 9:57 PMHere's hoping the creator of this group, Will Hamilton, is not of any relation to our Chief Electoral Officer of Saskatoon, David Hamilton.
Can it at least be confirmed one way or the other that they are't the offspring of David Hamilton. If they are his kids I believe he must resign.
Just out of curiosity, are the Hamilton brothers any relation to Doreen Hamilton, MLA from Regina?
Hey, are the brothers related to perpetually suntanned actor, George Hamilton? Or Terminator-asskicking Golden Globe-nominated actor, Linda Hamilton? Or British F1 Racing phenom, Lewis Hamilton? Or perhaps any one of these folks?
Jesus Christ, you SDA conspiracy nutters...
Posted by: former steeltown and home of the Ti-Cats, Hamilton, ON at November 7, 2007 9:00 AMJust read over at NDPBoogyman that two of the kids have connections to the NDP party. Will Hamilton is nephew of current Greystone Heights MLA Peter Prebble, and David Fodey is nephew to Jim Fodey, former NDP caucus chief of staff. Anyone who thinks their destruction of Saskatchewan Party signs was not partisan should give their head a shake.
