Y2Kyoto: The Killing Kompost

Annually, the UK dumps....

6.7 million tonnes, meaning each household jettisons between £250 and £400 worth of food each year. Most of the waste – which nationally costs £8bn – is sent to landfill where it rots, emitting the potent climate- change gas methane.

Ms Ruddock, the minister for climate change, warned that, although many people had not made the connection between scraping food into the bin and climate change, waste food presented a bigger environmental problem than packaging. "We cannot fail to do what is necessary," she said.

"At this rate we will not have a place to live which is habitable if we don't address climate change globally and the UK has to make its contribution."

C'mon Brittania - after all, natural vegetation ceased its Gaia-destroying practice of dying and rotting shortly after the Kyoto Protocols came into effect.

What's your excuse?

So if it rots in my composter it won't give off methane?

Posted by: chris at November 3, 2007 10:49 AM

The answer, of course, is a population-wide, government mandated caloric intake. This strategy has several advantages: 1) won't be enough wasted food to cause carbon emissions; 2) obesity rates (a big problem in the UK) will decline; 3) obesity related disease will decline saving the NHS significant cash; 4) the UK will become another island paradise like Cuba. There’s even proof this type of policy works:

Labour party policy for the next election perhaps?

Posted by: Boudicae at November 3, 2007 10:51 AM

I think the real answer they want is a population-wide government mandated culling of human beings.

You're not far off Boudicae.

After all this entire issue is NOT about climate change. It's about social engineering. The international communists are using Global Warming as another bat to beat humanity into their way of thinking.

Just look at how conventional and "main stream" global warming thinking has become. They're doing an excellent job at brainwashing the masses.

All you have to do is look at the troll comments here (anon, albatross, et al), nothing of any scientific substance, just mouthing of propaganda from ManBearPig, who has a weak mind to begin with, the reason he was chosen to be the chief mouthpiece.

ManBearPig just needs some friends.

Recent studies have shown that those imprisoned in concentration camps, prisoner of war camps particularly Japanese during WW2 and in the gulags of the USSR lost significant amounts of weight and had low cholesterol readings and diabetes was rare. (sarc off)

But if they successfully cut back on food consumption, won't the land no longer used for growing food be overgrown with wild vegetation that will eventually rot or burn, producing more greenhouse gasses? Clearly, what's needed is a program to pave over the farmland with concrete and asphalt. It'll be ugly, but we all have to do our part to stop global warming.

The end is nigh! It's fall and the leaves are falling off the trees!

Posted by: Mississauga Matt at November 3, 2007 11:40 AM

the potent climate- change gas

Note new, improved, scarier terminology. Replaces the rather benign "greenhouse gas"

Note also improvement to the argument:

what was
"increasing greenhouse gasses causes global warming"

becomes
"increasing potent climate change gasses causes climate change"

What’s worse than the compost crisis?

“40,000 uncircumcised young men, some in their late 20s, waiting their turn…….……I could never have imagined that climate change would have such an effect on an entire society.”

chris asks: "So if it rots in my composter it won't give off methane?"

Actually, it would produce less methane, as methane is produced in an anaerobic (without oxygen) environment, whereas composters provide their contents some access to oxygen. The irony is that the wasted food would produce as much methane if it was eaten.

Posted by: Woodporter at November 3, 2007 12:39 PM

Composting vegetation does not produce the same 'results' as composting/digesting/rotting proteins.

This says more about our wasteful society, than the environment.

Should we tell the Glotards that their biggest potential help in subduing nature and reducing CO2 emissions would be if they all stopped exhaling?

Yeah, we humans. Total scum aren't we.

Oh, gag, and just to add the perfect Nanny State touch, they gratuitiously add a banana bread recipe to the end of this cloying piece.

The Brits are about ten years away from having their heads shaved, their teeth extracted, issued radio collars and being given sippy cups with the state's daily liquid nutrient quota.

It's all so nauseating, the bizarre 24/7 activity by the new alarmist-industrial-complex and the infantile journalism that feeds off of it. What moron feels the need to add a banana bread recipe? Nevermind. I can just picture her.

Mark Steyn would have added a stir fry recipe for the peels.

OMG.You mean those evil toothless wonders across the big pond are responsible for we here in Edmonton getting snow Sunday(Nov 4th)? Imagine! Snow in AB in November! Oh wait.Aren't they causing global WARMING? Damn I'm confuzzed...heh

Freeman Dyson, one of the great physicists alive today, put it plainly enough in his autobiography:

"...all the fuss about global warming is grossly exaggerated. Here I am opposing the holy brotherhood of climate model experts and the crowd of deluded citizens who believe the numbers predicted by the computer models. ... I have studied the climate models and I know what they can do. ... They do a very poor job of describing the clouds, the dust, the chemistry and the biology of fields and farms and forests. They do not begin to describe the real world that we live in."

When the scientific establishment starts to peddle fraud, we get corrupt science. The Boomer Left came to power in the 1970s harboring a real hatred toward science. They called it "post-modernism," and "deconstructionism" --- and we saw all kinds of damage as a result.

What should be said to Brits (or anyone) who refuse to eat the food on their plates...

1 - "Shut up and eat your meat you pathetic whiny spawn of a rodent!"
OR
2 - "Shut up and eat the vegetables on your plate and quit your fr*kin whining you insufferable git!"

OR

3 - "Since your too stupid to survive on your own..."

Of course that does not solve any GHG related problems because all that food gets converted to methane either directly or in the sewage system later!

But just as a matter of principle .... people who waste food should be browbeaten at the very least.
