Heh. Superb comment, Kate.

LOL.

AS Stephane Dion fades to white.
I know it's not FAIR ... but ... excuse me if I say Bwahahaha

Posted by: John West at October 31, 2007 5:01 PM

It would appear a political 'white out' for the LIEberal party.

Maybe a "TRUE NORTH, STRONG AND FREE" winter storm is in the offing!

Christmas greetings to Jim Flaherty's tax relief "Charity Windstorm".

A big AMEN to that!!

Plain white isn't nearly bleak enough. Paint it black (and sell it to the National Gallery).

Posted by: Charles MacDonald at October 31, 2007 5:05 PM

Finance Minister Flaherty's Tax Cuts just passed in the House, Dion & Liberals Abstained from voting, Bloc voted against Tax cuts & No Surprise Jack & the NDP Voted against Tax cuts Because this is not what Canadians want & need. They need there hard earned dollars to go to the NDP's Useless Blackhole, Bottomless pits Programs that what Canadians want.( Thats What Jack Wants)
**Dion Has stated that when he is PM he will "RAISE" the GST because Economist told him that is good for the country & it will pay for their useless backhole, Bottomless Pit programs.

Posted by: bryanr at October 31, 2007 5:11 PM

I'm starting to believe that, with the Liberals abstaining on all these votes, that WE should withold their pay cheques. They're obviously not doing their job, so why the hell should we pay them.

FADE TO WHITE is the fate of the entire Liberal party.

Heh. Good one, Kate. As sometimes photos load slowly on my system, I kept staring at the screen, waiting for the pic of the leader of "Her Majesty's Loyal Abstainers" to pop up...until of course, I got the joke...

Posted by: Bruce at October 31, 2007 5:19 PM

Too funny Kate - I like Mike's idea of painting it black and selling it to the National gallery. Proceeds to go to undisclosed seller - sda.

hmmmmm white.

Isn't that the color of the French Navy's flag ?

How suitable for Steffi as he again fails to join in parliamentary battle.

Dion in a white burka. Invisible, and of no importance to his liberal masters.

Kate, nice painting of the white-tressed Dione taking his walk in the snow for the good of the party.

I like the detail work. Airbrushed?

"This is not fair." - Dion

I think the Tories could introduce a bill banning the Liberal Party for all time and the Liberals would abstain on it.

Posted by: Ryan at October 31, 2007 6:18 PM

Harper should do something outrageous to give the country a real good laugh. Declare all liberals must wear pink panties on their head at terrorist supporting events.

He's done.

The Liberals aren't merely in the political wilderness... they've actually stepped into a bear trap by making this imbecile their "leader".

Posted by: Canadian Sentinel at October 31, 2007 6:59 PM

I think Dion said something, in reference to the GST cut, like "That is 65 Billion and we could do a lot with that money".

I wonder how many paper bags that would fill and would it be enough to sway a few more folks to vote for him.......Perhaps that is the Liebrano secret weapon, promise everyone who votes for them a bag of money.......Sixty five billion....Ya dats dooble......

By the way Kate, you got me too........Good one

Posted by: Capndan at October 31, 2007 7:01 PM

The fact that there are no liberals in prison after their last tenure is a clear indication that politicians in this country don't go to jail, can anyone say sven robinson?

Posted by: h.ryan. at October 31, 2007 7:02 PM

Quite astonishing that all things considered that the Libs cannot seem to fall below 28% in public opinion polls. Why this is is a story that the MSM is avoiding.

At least Conservatives had the integrity to withdraw thier support from their party (Mulroney PCs) when the leadership drifted too far from conservative ideals.

Apparently it does not matter what the Libs do, don't do, stand for, or don't stand for. Their membership will circle the wagons, close their eyes, plug their ears and go la,la,la,la,la.

Lib supporters are apparently tribalistic, or ignorant, or maybe a bit of both.

Can you imagine a politician saying he will campaign on raising taxes? It just boggles the mind.
I watched Newman tonight and he said Baril Belanger wanted to vote against the mini budget but was told he would be expelled from caucus if he did. Belanger was not in his seat for the vote. We will see what happens because it was a whipped vote. As well the Quebec caucus was urging Dion to vote against the mini budget. There is a showdown coming in the not too distant future. The Liberals are not going to sit there and become irrelevant and a laughing stock in the country. They may have a dud leader but they are a proud bunch.

Posted by: hollinm at October 31, 2007 7:49 PM

CP OTTAWA - Stephane Dion's suggestion that he might one day increase the goods-and-services tax had some of his Liberal troops shaking their heads Wednesday.

One Liberal MP actually buried his head in his hands when told of his leader's public musing.

Another simply cursed.

Posted by: yyc at October 31, 2007 7:50 PM

Ward...I hate to keep blaming the media...but the bias is too blatant. After the throne speech, it was all about Dion. After this 'mini budget, it's all about Dion. The masses that aren't paying closer attention haven't a clue and probably believe Parliament is all about Dion.

That's a freaky 'new' ghost costume Dion's wearing...can't even see his pale eyes..his faithful will swear his IS wearing clothes.
Treats for us taxpayers, tricks on him.

Posted by: bluetech at October 31, 2007 7:52 PM

Meanwhile, the Quebec wing of the Liberal Party has been starving for cash ever since the Ottawa guys can't create any more programs that funnel money to them.

Vive Dion!

May you be the Liberal Party leader until the next mandated election, in the spring of 2009.

Watching the earnest Dion being brought down by his less scrupulous supporting cast hasn't brought this many laughs since Ernest Goes On Holidays.

Posted by: set you free at October 31, 2007 7:57 PM

Ya gotta love this peckerhead Dion.....he pulls his head out of his ass just long enough to shoot himself in the foot.We will raise the GST.....GO LIBERALS!!!

I'm outraged.

Posted by: allan at October 31, 2007 9:31 PM

He will raise the GST ... that from the party who said they would get rid of it if elected.

Dion won't vote because the Conservatives aren't playing fair. He would prefer they get into a bidding war in offering the greatest number of programs that will serve Canadians so well.

I prefer, like most Canadians, to keep more of my own money and I will use it to serve myself.

I also note the two major TV networks and local Liberal CKNW radio push the idea the Harper still can't win a majority. I think he already has ... all we are waiting for is the opportunity to vote.

Posted by: John West at October 31, 2007 9:33 PM

This sucks. I've been looking forward to a Harper-Dion election debate for nearly a year now. It's never going to happen. Steffi thinks he's biding his time for the right moment to pull the plug. What he's really doing is biding time for Rae & Iggy to get their LPC leadership review called in January.

It's over for Mr. Kyoto. Even Lizzie May has left him for Jacko.

Posted by: Paul MacPhail at November 1, 2007 1:09 AM

Eugene, yes you are missing the joke. You can't see a thing because that is Kate's assessment of Stephane Dion's political future: a big nothing.

A word of caution, folks: don't gloat too much. If Adscam wasn't enough to reduce the Liberals to a rump party, then there are still a significant number who will vote for them no matter what. It is still conceivable that the Liberals could form a majority government in the next election (but they won't be getting my vote). Remember, they have the CBC and CTV, as well as most major newspapers, hauling water for them. Kate and Andrew Coyne and Steve Janke get lots of readers, but those readers are people who bother to keep themselves informed even between elections. Lots of people don't keep informed, but still exercise their right to vote.

*groan*

I'd like to say I was just pretending to be stupid, but... :-)

Posted by: Eugene at November 1, 2007 1:52 AM

Dion's musings on "reconsidering" the cuts to the GST will have the greatest effect in Ontario where implementation of the nations most hated tax got the liberals a lot of support when Chretien promised to "kill it".
Now that this meme has slipped out of Dion's mouth I expect that you won't see many polls being released on voter intentions by the MSM.

Posted by: gimbol at November 1, 2007 7:03 AM

A friend sent this to me a while ago so I thought this may be the best time to share it:

Sometimes politicians and people exclaim; "It's just a tax cut for the rich!", and it is just accepted to be fact. But what does that really mean?

Just in case you are not completely clear on this issue, we hope the following will help.

Let's put tax cuts in terms everyone can understand. Suppose that everyday, ten men go out for dinner. The bill for all ten comes to $100.

If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:
The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh $7.
The eighth $12.
The ninth $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.

So, that's what they decided to do.

The ten men ate dinner in the restaurant every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve.

"Since you are all such good customers," he said, "I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily meal by $20."

So, now dinner for the ten only cost $80. The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes.

So, the first four men were unaffected. They would still eat for free. But what about the other six, the paying customers? How could they divvy up the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his 'fair share'?

The six men realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being 'PAID' to eat their meal.

So, the restaurant owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.

And so:
The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33% savings).
The seventh now paid $5 instead of $7 (28% savings).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).

Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to eat for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings.

"I only got a dollar out of the $20," declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man "but he got $10!"

"Yeah, that's right," exclaimed the fifth man. "I only saved a dollar, too. It's unfair that he got ten times more than me!"

"That's true!" shouted the seventh man. "Why should he get $10 back when I got only $2? The wealthy get all the breaks!"

"Wait a minute," yelled the first four men in unison. "We didn't get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!" The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn't show up for dinner, so the nine sat down and ate without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn't have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!

And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up at the table anymore.

There are lots of good restaurants in Europe and the Caribbean.

Posted by: NSTorygal at November 1, 2007 8:22 AM

you can just imagine the new political ads
"Dion favors Tax Increases"

Posted by: bryanr at November 1, 2007 8:23 AM

Dion should really get the McGuinty crowd doing his PR and press releases. That way he could campaign on not raising taxes, and then afterwards just go and do it....oh wait, Mcguinty just got a second majority by doing that, never mind....

Posted by: JCL at November 1, 2007 9:56 AM

Heard something interesting on Gormley yesterday. Mike Duffy was on, and he explained the "why" of not bringing down the Conservative government. Something to do with Liberal leadership reviews and elections in their party constitution.

The long and the short of it is that if they bring the Tories down and lose the election, they are stuck with Dion for another two years. Otherwise, they can find some way to boot him out using the Parliamentary Caucus before an election.

Don't think the Liberals don't know what an unspeakable moron he is. They are also smart enough to get rid of him in a sneaky manner. Still means probably one more Throne Speech from Harper.

Posted by: Krydor at November 1, 2007 10:25 AM

Okay, I dropped by last night, stared at the screen, reloaded page several times and gave up and went to bed. I was tired.

Upon coming to work I finally figured it out...it's a real thinker that one, lol.

Posted by: mecheng at November 1, 2007 10:56 AM

Would it not make a great campaign video to have the Cretin claiming they would get rid of the GST then on the other side have Dion saying they will increase the GST?

Posted by: eliza at November 1, 2007 11:07 AM

The only true voice the people have in Ottawa is the NDP. They are a true opposition.

Posted by: ok4ua at November 1, 2007 10:36 PM

Yep ok, they are a true opposition.

Opposed to victory in Afghanistan
Opposed to tax cuts
Opposed to property rights for Canadians
Opposed to private ownership of firearms
Opposed to jailing violent criminals
Opposed to raising the age of sexual consent above 14 years old
I could go on...

Yep, you name it, they oppose it. That's why Smilin' Jack has 12 seats and is unlikely to keep 'em all. There's not too many morons out there who still go for that stuff.

Say, is that why you keep commenting here? You're LONELY?! Poor baby!

Posted by: The Phantom at November 1, 2007 11:06 PM

Opposed to oppression!! Who else even opens their mouths. Opposition keeps the gov't on it's toes. He does this without calling names unlike our SaskATory party here. All they did was yell and grandstand.Property rights protect no working families. We have not won the war yet.Who the hell needs hand guns? He's all for jailing violent criminals we all are. He's against jailing eveybody. Only 30% of Canadians support your tories.

Posted by: ok4ua at November 1, 2007 11:42 PM

ok4u: "He does this without calling names"

Jack! on the creation of the New Conservative party in 2003: "A Same-Sect Marriage"

"Property rights protect no working families." --> until Government wants their house to build a road.

"Only 30% of Canadians support your tories." --> 40% in other opinion polls, while 60% think Stephen Harper is the best leader -- compared to 15% for Jack.

"We have not won the war yet." --> and the War for Socialism took a big step backward in Central & Eastern Europe during August-December, 1989, and August-December, 1991.

Posted by: jwkozak91 at November 2, 2007 2:54 AM

Come to think of it -

"A Same-Sect Marriage" would also describe the marriage of the Canadian Labour Congress and the CCF that created the NDP in 1961.

HMMM... ;-)

Posted by: jwkozak91 at November 2, 2007 3:00 AM

I know this is like taking candy from a baby, but I just can't help myself.

ok4ua says: "Property rights protect no working families." Beeecause no working family owns their own house?

"We have not won the war yet." No, and Smilin' Jack is making it his election platform to make sure we run away before we win. Thereby ensuring defeat, incidentally.

"Who the hell needs hand guns?" Who the hell are you to decide what I need and don't need, buddy? This is supposed to be a FREE country. That's another thing the NDP is opposed to I guess.

"He's all for jailing violent criminals we all are. He's against jailing eveybody." Riiight. And Harper is FOR jailing everybody?

"Only 30% of Canadians support your tories." Well, if that's true, how come Mr. Dion is abstaining from voting on the mini-budget, the Throne Speech, the crime bill thing...

Come ON man, you are making this 'way too easy! What are you, in grade school?
