On Sept.13, 2006 I noted that Sask Energy had announced they'd be seeking at 17% rate increase at a time when natural gas futures were at a 20 month low.

Wednesday, September 19, 2007: NYMEX Natural Gas Futures for October delivery.

But last year a provincial election wasn't in the works...
A break on SaskEnergy bills this winter will likely be a little bigger than expected.Posted by Kate at September 20, 2007 11:04 AMThe utility is looking at cutting rates by nearly six per cent, meaning the average homeowner will save about $66 a year.

Yep those dippers really do produce the very best Economists and Policies...... Don't They??
Posted by: OMMAG at September 20, 2007 11:36 AM...you may get $66 back, but how much is gone with Taxable Income?

You can visualize a barrel of oil, or a gallon of gasoline, heating oil etc. You can't see natural gas. It's sold in cubic feet, cubic meters, kilojoules, etc. etc. Measurements that the average Joe doesn't understand, until the customer gets his or her bill at the end of the coldest month, January and/or February.
The truth is that the average daily temp. is what affects your heating bill the most, provided of course the price of gas stays within reasonable limits.
Ah, but wait a moment. We're in a global warming trend right now aren't we? The higher the average daily temp. rises, the lower natural gas and heating oil futures drop. Math tells me that global warming isn't that bad after all!! Add to that the fact that cars, trucks, locomotives etc. get better mileage at higher temps, wow!!
Smoke that down your pipe Mr. Calvert! And pass it on to Dion it Ottawa!
another rigged poll here:
http://www.paherald.sk.ca/
"do you suypport the provincial govs pulp mill dea"? was at 92% negative, now 50% positive;
the PA paper has been notoriously biased in favour of the ndp.
Kate, does the Sask gas consumer only have one supplier choice?
That'd be enough reason to boot the NDP in favour of a free market.
Posted by: aj in calgary at September 20, 2007 12:31 PMYes there is only one choice homeowners have for natural gas in Sask.
Posted by: Blackroc at September 20, 2007 12:44 PMThe Lorne giveth and the Lorne taketh away, (or the other way around).
Posted by: Woodporter at September 20, 2007 1:28 PMCareful what you ask for. Living in Alberta we have a choice of NG suppliers, about 3 years now. Every year we get several offers to sign up for a long term (3 or 5 year) package where the price is locked in and will not rise. They even say that the price may go down.
Well I do not trust any utility company so I keep my paid bills for my records. About 2 years ago I looked at the locked in price of one of the company's were offering. It was about $1.00 above the highest price I paid over the last winter season.
NG has fluctuated a lot over the last 2 seasons but as mentioned above global warming is having a small effect and prices are not moving upwards as much.
I plan on doing research again but I suspect that I will stay with the month to month price plan. One more thing I have noticed with friends that have signed up is the the administration rate have doubled or that there are new admin fees.
Careful when a utility company "wants" to save you money.
Re .. The PA Herald....
Probably notoriously in favour of having the rest of the province fund their mill!!
While we're on the topic of energy, did you NDP supporters hear the one about the Saskatchewan farmer, an NDP supporter, who went to visit his farmer friend in Montana, a staunch Republican.
Saturday night rolls in, the two farm boys decide to hop the train and head for Billings, just to look at the city lights. As they were walking down Main St. a guy drives by in a new Lincoln Continental V-12.
The Montana farm boy exclaims, "Someday, I'm gonna have one of them fancy automobiles!"
The NDP looks at his friend in dismay and says, "Someday, that guy will be walking, just like we are right now." (Saw that one in Western Producer "Opinion-Open forum." (Sept. 12 issue.)
I am afraid that this will be seen by too many in Saskatchewan as "the government giving back to the people" the way that many people see their tax refund cheques in the spring as "government money", not a refund of a previous overpayment.
Posted by: imethisguy at September 20, 2007 3:58 PMHey, how come the Sask license plates don't have the motto 'Only One Choice' on them?
We have the cheapest utilities in Canada. Even cheaper than the state of Alberta.
Posted by: ok4ua at September 21, 2007 4:54 PMCheapest utilities in Sask. yes. But Alberta has no sales tax and a lower personal tax rate.
It doesn't even come close to being a saw off. The NDP will screw the people however they can...in order to have the dough to blow on special interest groups, unions, civil service, poorly thought-out social programs (seniors drug plan) etc. to get the vote.
Posted by: NewDad at September 22, 2007 12:09 AMHow many choices do you have in Alberta when it comes to utilities?
