Y2Kyoto: Be Still My Beating Heart

Well this explains that vast, unpopulated wasteland known as "the equator";

Doctors warn that the warmer weather expected with climate change might also produce more heart problems.

"If it really is a few degrees warmer in the next 50 years, we could definitely have more cardiovascular disease," said Dr. Karin Schenck-Gustafsson, of the department of cardiology at Sweden's Karolinska Institute.

On the sidelines of the European Society of Cardiology's annual meeting in Vienna this week, some experts said that the issue deserved more attention. It's well-known that people have more heart problems when it's hot.

Speaking of global warming, Saskatchewan's forecast for the month of September includes snow...
During the winter months, "there is a change in the ratio of daylight hours to dark hours, which changes the hormonal balance, and the hormones involved, such as cortisol, can lower the threshold for a cardiovascular event," explains Stephen P. Glasser, MD, a professor of preventive medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine, in Birmingham, Ala.

But that's not all that's going on. Cold temperatures cause arteries to tighten, restricting blood flow and reducing the oxygen supply to the heart, all of which can set the stage for a heart attack.

"In cold weather, there is more oxygen demand by the heart because it is working harder to do the work and maintain body heat," Glasser says.

The science is settled. There's nowhere on earth where human beings can survive.

Fortunately or not, that's how the businesses make money: by fearmongering, scaring in plain English.
That's why our education system is bent on producing nancy-boys and barby-brained girls. Easy to scare - easy to sell.
Consistently, it is not surprising at all, that coffee, red wine, sugar, fat, heat, cold, vegetables, sun, water, air etc. are good or bad depending on who's paying for the currently running commercial (even scientific articles being commercials of some sort).
I give them all a finger and live a life instead. What difference does it make if we live a year longer, or shorter, than average life expectancy, as a result of our good or bad choices in food etc?

Posted by: Aaron at September 5, 2007 1:31 PM

Kate. Humans can survive in Germany. You see in Europe they have embraced carbon trading. And as a result of the success of this Germany has reduced temperatures within it's borders. While the rest of the globe will roast Germany will be fine.

It snowed today in many parts of southern Germany. Augsberg, Erding, Laupheim, Lechfeld, Messstetten to name a few.

Move to Germany and you will be safe. Plus they have good beer.

What a ridiculous fluff piece based on no hard science or evidence just a lot of "mights". Heart disease is entirely age related. It's like extrapolating that more Floridians are dying from a heat/heart factor than other states without factoring in that it is a retirement state.

Have generations of urban dwellers been dropping like flies in India? I doubt it. Most people have the brains to stay hydrated and not picnic on concrete in sweltering hot climates long before GW came into vogue.

Why no data or control studies to support heat/heart deaths against whole swatches of people that have always lived in hot humid climates at and below the equator? How could anyone bother crafting this article without that?

The stupidity of journalism meets the stupidity of politized psuedo-science.

My Gawd the corporate media and corporate science is absolutely obsesses with spewing this climate fear mongering...its so pervasive and obvious only a leftard would miss the purpose of the messaging...all this constant media spew on GW/climate/enviro hyteria ia focused at lending fraudulent credibility to the IN global policy on "sustainability"

“ Sustainable development, as envisioned by the internationalists who promote this policy, is an amalgamation of soviet justice and social order with Fascist economics. This is a joining of the two worst ideals ever to plague mankind. When communism joins with Fascism in a global movement to control and regulate all private property and natural resources, you can be sure “progressive” is an oxymoron to the result and intent. There is NOTHING “progressive” about sustainable development as a political doctrine” (W F Buckley)

Well naturally Kate, living is dangerous to your health!

Now of course you will recall that all the bad weather comes from Hans Island, due to my awesome connection with Divine Providence. :)

This was due to combating Anthropogenic Glow Bull Warming as promulgated by THE GOREACLE.

Of course, there are some internet trollers trying to set up the Hans Island Liberation Front but of course they are ignorant of the true meaning of Christmas.

SEE: http://www.hansislandliberationfront.com/

The key to a "happy heart" is giving.

Secondly when the weather is cold this is a good reason to cuddle up by the fire, bringing much happiness to all. Depending on one's circumstances this may get one's heart going.

Of course the AGW crowd would object to wood fires due to the green house gases being produced.
Thus we conclude AGW apologists are against human love due to the production of greenhouse gases.

Thirdly, if your heart is still, this is usually a good indicator that you didn't get to the specialist in time. Moreover this would decidedly suggest that one is having a conversation with Jesus in the first person, as no translators would be required.

"Be still my heart" is kind of a weird poetic death wish by infatuated lovers.

This is almost as good as Canada Revenue Agency suggesting that I demonstrate "an organ or group of organs would fail" if I withheld insulin from my son.

Anger is another method to get one's heart going, short of electro shock revival methods.

Unfortunately, I had to decline CRA's insane offer to demonstrate organ failure.

The day I go down to the offices of Canada Revenue Agency to demonstrate "group organ failure" for the benefit CRA staff, may also result in some beating hearts to be still.

This would be the day I would earn the appellation:

HER MAJESTY'S ROYAL HUN

Thus to master the storm in your heart Kate, you need come to Hans Island where we offer quiet reflection away from the hustle and bustle of an often wild, wooly and sometimes extremely stupid world.

If you come to Hans Island you may need a musket to fire off some warning shots to the Danes who exhibit Viking tendencies.

John Donne once suggested that "no man is a island" but occasionally this is necessary.

As I suggested to my wife, the gun registryless straight shooting credo on Hans Island is: "Don't be afraid of harsh weather, just throw a log on the fire, and SHOW ME THE LOVE!"

Cheers :)

Kate, perhaps your search functions are superior to what is available to me...

When you mentioned Saskatchewan's forecast, I recalled that in the Spring, some commenter (I believe it was our favourite bird-brain...Alby) had referenced an Environment Canada (I think) website that had provided their forecast for Canada in the summer of 2007...forecasting a warmer than usual summer. Of course, the commenter crowed about this as being further proof of AGW.

Well, now the summer is over and I think this must have been one of the cooler summers we've had in quite some time. Are you able to find that posting and rub someone's nose (beak) in it?

Eeyore,

Go to Google and try something like this:

site:www.smalldeadanimals.com albatros39a forecast

Posted by: Mississauga Matt at September 5, 2007 3:57 PM

I read the whole article. What a load of fatuous nonsense! "On the sidelines . . . some experts said . . ." -- translation: "While having coffee and looking over the pharmaceutical industry exhibits some cardiologists casually speculated . . . "
Reporter: Could warmer weather produce more heart problems?
Cardiologist (eyeing the latest in drug eleuting stents): Yeah, I s'pose it could; could also reduce some as well, maybe get a few of the lazier ones out exercising.
Reporter: Did more people die from heart problems during the heat wave in France?
Cardiologist (catching sight of former classmate and waving): Yeah, I expect so, kinda like the problems we get during the cold snaps
Reporter: Can I quote you as an expert?
Cardiologist: Hey, Grayson, haven't seen you in years, how's the wife and kids . . .
As for the author's contention that "The human body is not designed to handle extreme heat for long periods of time . . ." depending on one's definition of "extreme" and "long" it's patently not true. Of all the mammals on the planet, humans are actually amongst the best adapted to handle heat, able to perform at a level and for a duration that would leave other mammals prostrate at similar temperatures. I'll stop.

Posted by: DrD at September 5, 2007 4:02 PM

Eeyore, you're missing the essential beauty of the GW argument: if it's too hot, that's global warming; if it's too cold, that's global warming too; and if the weather's exactly the same as it was the year before, it's also just one more damn global warming effect. Your neighbor's painting his fence a funny color could presumably be blamed on global warming somehow or other, too, but you'll have to get your local Suzuki to explain that one to you.

Posted by: GDW at September 5, 2007 4:07 PM

"But because there are so many scientific uncertainties about climate change, like how fast it will occur, or what other factors such as pollution levels or natural phenomena might affect it..."

Or if it's manmade or even occurring at all, perhaps?

Two very clear indications of the MSM's current inclination to create news themselves is their frequent use of unreliable polls and regularly reporting results of uncorroberated scientific 'studies' as fact. You know the stuff I'm talking about....studies that show drinking red wine the second tuesday of every month while standing on one leg may actually reduce the chances of getting hair cancer,or some such other groundbreaking revelation.

Not only has the MSM,in many cases, erased the line between news and editorializing, they are quickly turning the scientific community into not much more than a source of entertainment and amusement(not that scientists themselves have helped matters any).

Thanks for keeping the pressure on these manipulative bastards,Kate.

GDW, I'm not missing the point...I've made that same point myself in earlier postings. I'm just a bit of a nasty bugger who would like to rub sh*t in a moron's face (namely, birdbrain Alby). I was only reminded of this old post about the hot summer forecast when Kate mentioned the Saskatchewan forecast including snow.

By the way, I checked EC's website and found the old forecast for summer, and yes, they were forecasting a warmer-than-usual summer. Then I checked the record of their accuracy and found that their forecasts are just slightly better than random chance. THAT just reinforces my faith in the Kyoto climate models!

With dozens of these "climate hysteria" quasi-subliminal conditioning messagrs in the corporate media showing up on a daily basis over the last number of years, is there doubt the media carry agendas?

In this case they want to stampede the panicked masses towards UN centralist sustainability regulating with climate doom evangelism...of course, the callow leftards are the first to be useful idiots for this global resource control agenda.

How frikking obvious does the motivation and cronyism have to be before we admit this is an collusive effort of the political/acedemic/media/economic elites?

Cause it ain't about facts ...... it's about the story to be told.

Posted by: OMMAG at September 5, 2007 6:09 PM

Humans can't handle heat eh???? I read in the book "Our Kind", that no other mammal can outdo the human in handling heat and stress. The examples given were of hunters on foot being able to run (jog) down any species of mammal. The book claimed that in hot climates aboriginal hunters would "dog" game to death because only the human brain and cardio-system could withstand prolonged heat stress.

Reminds me of a guy I knew who would run down whitetailed deer during hunting season when there was fresh snow on the ground ... he and his brother would find one in the a.m., follow it relentlessly forcing it to run (they'd be on foot too), and always get it by evening.

Bring on the heat!

One day you deniers are putting up pictures of temperature sensors and talking about snow in Germany. The next, links to Bjorn Lomborg are all over the place telling how great global warming will be and yelling climate changes, it's natural that climates change.
So what exactly are you arguing, that man made global warming isn't happening or that global warming isn't happening? I wish you people would get on the same song sheet, your tune is sounding a little confused. So come on, what exactly are you trying to deny AWG or GW, make up your minds?

Kate
I'm wondering where "Accuweather" got that forecast from, it reads like the Farmers Almanac? Why haven't you used the Farmers Almanac in your silly and feeble attempts to "disprove" the science of man made global warming Kate. Hey, it's as credible as all the other sources you've used to date.

So really, what’s the problem with the article? They did correctly point out that 35000 died during the 2003 heat wave in Europe. In the article it said, “experts say that much of that was due to heart problems in the elderly worsened by the extreme heat”; what did you cons think the cause of death was, chickenpox? Oh I know what the problem is, they used that forbidden word in the article, “evolution”.

I'm a little bewildered as to what everyone's so worked up about here. The experts quoted aren't endorsing man-made climate change (the first clearly said "If" in regards to higher temperatures), just pointing out that sustained higher temperatures will probably lead to more cardiovascular problems. That humans have evolved to function well in high temperatures doesn't mean that those are ideal conditions for us: to use the doctor's analogy, my car was designed to go up to 140 km/hr, but running at those speeds contantly would cause it to break down faster. At the other extreme, never using it at all would also damage it. This doesn't really prove anything about science, the media or global warming.

Posted by: Mark at September 6, 2007 5:54 AM

"This doesn't really prove anything about science, the media or global warming."

Mark: There are none so blind as those who will not see.

In this age of Machiavellian globalist intrigues and manipulation of public opinion, there is no such thing as a coincidence or pure fact in any corporate media out put.

As you say if this does not prove anything why is it published? Why publis vacant chatter which paints a doomsday scenario of tropical heat and human cardiovascular failure if you are not attempting to alarm people needlessly?...Better still why plant these heat realted doomsday pieces beside a global warming article ...and why is this a established pattern with the MSM?

Media know that alarm (fear) is the ultimate public motivator...why are they alarming the public...what's their game? How ill media profit from public fear?

Posted by: WL Mackenzie Redux at September 6, 2007 9:10 AM

Sorry, I should have been more clear: contrary to what posters here seem to think, this article proves nothing about the science of global warming (it says nothing about it) or scientists (the ones quoted therin are refreshingly reticient about talking about matters outside their expertise). As to media sensationalism, that has been around since the first neanderthal scratched the first saber-toothed tiger in a cave wall. If the climate is changing, for whatever reason, I would hope that our medical professionals were thinking of all possible consequences related to it and our journalists were informing us on the latest thinking on the issue.
I'm not in the least bit 'alarmed' by this - they're not predicting that everyone's going to die of coronaries at age forty if global temperatures go up.
