Inmates in a Japanese jail found about 300 marijuana plants in the exercise yard, but instead of getting high, they reported the discovery to the authorities. [...] Takashi Nomura, a prison guard, said inmates are allowed to cultivate vegetables and did not appear to have added marijuana. "We only grow potatoes and beans here," he said. In physical checkups, prison officers found no sign any inmates had taken advantage of the wild marijuana.
I vote for a prison system exchange.
Posted by Kate at September 1, 2007 1:28 PMYou mean the way to reduce crime isn't through making the penal system as pleasant as possible?!!
Could that policy be incorrect, the leftists wrong?!!
Sarcasm - max.
Posted by: KVB at September 1, 2007 6:32 PMFunny how Corrections Canada has a recidivism rate of around 90%,while the military has 5%. Ummmmmmmm....naw,the leftards can't be wrong. Oh. And the tooth fairy came last night too!!!!
Posted by: Justthinkin at September 1, 2007 6:41 PMJustthinkin - it's because of the short sentences and the parole boards ... there just isn't enough time to get all the tattoos done.
Posted by: ural at September 1, 2007 7:01 PM"Prisoners in Japan’s prisons suffer as do prisoners all over the world with regular beatings and solitary confinement which is a matter of course..."
Well that explains the problem: obviously our penal systems are not keeping up with the rest of the world in regards to the beatings. I vote we end that situation ASAP.
Posted by: Texas Canuck at September 1, 2007 7:40 PMI know you where being sarcastic Texas, but you do have a good point. Maybe not as far as the beatings, but lets get some real deterrent back in the prison system! Oh wait. Rehab first. Bring on the lithium!!!!
Posted by: Justthinkin at September 1, 2007 8:00 PMWho's sarcastic?
Posted by: Texas Canuck at September 1, 2007 8:08 PMummmmmm....Okay...I mis-read. You are advocating beatings in prison?
Posted by: Justthinkin at September 1, 2007 8:39 PM"Justthinkin", to be fair, the Military recidivism rate is so low is because a lot of those who end up going to Club Ed also end up being dishonourably discharged after they serve their term. Therefore, those who are most likely to re-offend end up doing so as civvies.
However, with that said, I knew one recruit who got sent for a 1 month stretch in Club Ed because he threatened another soldier with a knife. Going in he was loud, conceited, and totally undisciplined. By the time he came back he was quiet as a mouse, followed every order to the letter, and conducted himself like a model soldier. The military penal system is, without a doubt, a hell of a lot more effective than the civilian version.
Posted by: Alex at September 1, 2007 9:18 PMHmmm...changes to our prison system as proposed by some right wingers would make Lavrenty Beria smile.
Posted by: lberia at September 1, 2007 9:58 PMOn the whole, I would have to say that inmates should experience negative reinforcement ... prison should be a place that you don't want to go to twice.
But then again if a criminal finds it to tough this happens:

Posted by: ural at September 2, 2007 12:01 AMWow...you know your own society is really having problems when you learn that your average elected representative is probably less trustworthy than the average Japanese prison inmate.
Posted by: Canadian Observer at September 2, 2007 2:12 AMI for one heartily endorse a prisoner exchange... for all of those Japanese prisoners except one.
Posted by: Doogie at September 2, 2007 3:51 AMIf I'm not mistaken, Japan also has an incredibly low crime rate. I doubt they're particularly focused on "root causes". Could it be that deterrence actually works?
Posted by: DrD at September 2, 2007 9:38 AMChanges to our prison system as proposed by some right wingers might actually reduce the crime rate, & protect the most vulnerable in society.
