unless this building is 120+ years old, then it would seem at some point that the temp sensor was elswhere.

Now this is truly becoming absurd.

Does the NOAA et al not have any minimum standards regarding the location of these things? Perhaps Kate, you or someone, should ask these guys for a copy of the standards.

Well this one certainly proves beyond a doubt that human activity is causing the earth's temperature to rise, at least in Santa Rosa.

After all, left to her own devices, Mother Nature would hardly have constructed an industrial area where some twit could select a steel roof to place USHCN weather monitoring station!

One suspects the selection was not all that accidental. Serious scientists and meterologists would know full well the likely effect such a location would have on recorded temperatures. No, I venture this location was selected by an individual who wished to achive a desired outcome, i.e., to demonstrate how much the earth is warming.

Let the "Outings" begin, these location selectors deserve "Full" recognition for their efforts.

Man, this is the best one yet! Note the strategically placed AC units. On top of the Democrat building no less! BWAHAHAHAAA!!!

Could someone please explain to this neophyte exactly what that sensor is sitting on and why this is driving temperature readings up?

Posted by: Eugene at August 28, 2007 6:57 PM

The alarmists will just say ya ya, the end justifies the means --- Gore just wants to save us --- Don't bother us with with details --- We just want to play hockey with the data --- Anyways, we are just picking temp numbers out of thin air --- air that is getting thicker with CO2, ya see --- So what if parking lots are the cause of global warming graphs, the whole world will warm up too, someday. Our fault. Repent. In Canada, send money to Suzuki :)

And besides, our computer programs adjust for the skewing effect of a sea of hot parking lots and hot cars. Trust us. No you cannot see the data. That pesky Canadian, Steve McIntyre, is a party pooper.

Eugene,

Your answer also happens to be the top three things in Real Estate.

Oh this one's a gem is that a gravel and tar roof and a big AC unit there...otta be good for readings that will alarm and shock ;-)

I wish I could afford the GMC Sierra, full load SS. Cause I'm sitting by my open window thinking about a blanket. If it's really true, I sure would like to see some warmth. It's the 28th of "August" for dang sure.

Santa Rosa is close to Napa Valley. It gets really, really hot. At this moment, the temperature is 97 F.

Anyone wanting to get an unadulterated temperature reading would have to instinctively know it's a bad idea to plonk a temperature guage in the middle of a hot city.

The temperature guage could easily have been located in a Sonoma County vineyard -- away from the heat buildup effect caused by proximity to buildings and asphalt.

And then the scientists who "cook" the data (if you'll excuse the expression), would have no need to put in offsetting adjustments for the city heat effect.

Eugene: " ... exactly what that sensor is sitting on and why this is driving temperature readings up?"

That kinda sums up the problem. Now, if you were one of the consensus scientists, could you adjust the data for "the models" (given only the data that the graph came from) to correct for improper siting, calibration errors, etc ... and predict the climate for the next 100 years.

Well, they think they can. John Cross should be around shortly with references to 3 peer reviewed papers that show, without a doubt, that you can use math to approximate reality ... even though you don't know what the reality is.

O.K already! It's settled.
Continue measuring air temperature using satellites in orbit...

Posted by: Knight of Good Mr. Iron Man at August 28, 2007 9:30 PM

The GISS curve for this station is meaningless. NO conclusion can be drawn. Even the 30 degree trend line means nothing. The timeline introduces unidentified, uncontrolled, and unaccounted for variables. There isn't a statistical test on the planet that can derive any meaning from that data. Not only is the variable history uncontrolled, its not even known with adequate precision of variance.

Anyone who has spent time on a large roof such as this one knows how much hotter it is up there, compared to the surrounding ground level. This is absurd in the least.

Posted by: Woodporter at August 28, 2007 11:26 PM

You know Knight, if I was NASA and I really, REALLY wanted to know both the spot temperature of a place and the average temperature of the whole planet, I would use satellites.

Ever see a laser thermometer? I bought one at Princess Auto last year for like fifty bucks. It uses a laser and tells you the temperature of whatever surface you shine it on. Even my crappy little one will read to within one degree, thirty feet away. Good ones can measure a cow fart from orbit.

I'd stick a few laser thermometers on some satellites and scan the whole damn planet 200 times an hour.

Nobody seems to be doing that. Nor anything like that, and they let a-holes stick thermometers beside the AC condenser on the roof of a 4 story building in the middle of town. Hottest possible location short of inside a west-facing pizzeria with big windows, right next to the oven.

Which to any thinking person would indicate NASA cares not a damn what the temperature actually is, or if its changing, or by how much.

But since it is their job to care, since they for sure spent their budget every year, and since they SAY they care, maybe we should kick their asses out on the street for lying with public money. Maybe even hire somebody with a rudimentary sense of honor?

I know its a radical notion, but work with me here.

To halt global warming we should ask those wackos from GREENPEACE to stop their blabbering becuase all that HOT AIR their creating is ceasing all that melting ice caps and only a complete jerk would have anything to do with GREENPEACE just proved it by going up on that glacer in their sunshine clothes GREENPEACE ONLY COMPLETE IDIOTS NEED JOIN

To place a sensor on the roof of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat Building is idiotic. Just think of all that hot air wafting upwards, skewing readings.

Based on all the sites Kate has dug up, this is beginning to really smell. Algore must have a hand in this distribution of questionable/ludicrous location placements.

...do these people actually get paid to work?

Posted by: tomax7 at August 29, 2007 2:24 AM

Phantom, satellite measurements have been underway for 30 years. The problem for the "climatologists", read "alarmologists", is that they don't suppport the terrestrial record and the "global warming" alarmism.
