Kate Foxworthy Moments

When you get a call from your vacationing dad, and his one sentence impression of Ireland is;

"The trees are too thick."

...You might be from Saskatchewan.

Guess he hasn't been to BC huh ? :)

Posted by: Fred at August 16, 2007 3:36 PM

There's nothing wrong with BC that couldn't be fixed with a chainsaw and a D9 Cat.

"There's nothing wrong with BC that couldn't be fixed with a chainsaw and a D9 Cat."

. . and a few spray cans of "anti-moonbat"

Trust me, its my home :)

Posted by: Fred at August 16, 2007 4:06 PM

So Kate, when you pushing the liberals into the Sea with the D9, what _are_ you going to do with the chain saw?

Posted by: Fred at August 16, 2007 4:07 PM

That is "finish pushing"

Posted by: Fred at August 16, 2007 4:08 PM

Ti,e fpr alittle more logging and tell JULIA(BUTTERFLY)HILL to GET A LIFE and tell the tree huggers to STAY AWAY

Posted by: spurwing plover at August 16, 2007 4:22 PM

Some day I hope we have a government in BC that will changer the Provincial motto to:

"BC First, Earth Second . . . we'll log the other planets later"

Posted by: Fred at August 16, 2007 4:25 PM

Don't worry Kate -- just act surprised and agree with him. After all, he's your dad...

Posted by: Orlin at August 16, 2007 4:32 PM

Sounds like what my Mum said about Arizona:

Too many rocks.

Posted by: The Phantom at August 16, 2007 4:45 PM

...mountains are nice, but they sure do block the view...

Posted by: tomax7 at August 16, 2007 5:06 PM

...friend's relative from Scotland said upon landing in Edmonton and driving to Cold Lake(3 hours east)...

"So when do we hit the ocean?"

Posted by: tomax7 at August 16, 2007 5:08 PM

When I was in Saskatchewan, I nearly always thought, "The sky's too big!" so, I know exactly how Mr. McMillan feels.

But, I'd gladly trade places with him. Ireland? Big trees? Lucky man!

Posted by: lookout at August 16, 2007 5:24 PM

When I lived in Regina ... I was once discussing travel and specifically road trips. My favorite being around hilly country and twisty roads. After talking about such locations as the Rockies and Upstate New York or The Lakehead ... my buddy chirps

"The roads may be fun to drive but you can't see anything because of all the trees."

Posted by: OMMAG at August 16, 2007 5:51 PM

"Ireland? Big trees? Lucky man!"

Actually, his comment was "green tunnels".

It doesn't make for much of a view from the bus window, I guess.

Posted by: Kate at August 16, 2007 5:53 PM

Of course, we all remember the Saskatchewan farmer on his first trip to B.C. When asked what he thought about the mountains he replied, " Nice, but they sure block the view."

Posted by: wallyj at August 16, 2007 6:14 PM

According to various "Green" organizations, we ran out of trees here in B.C., about twenty years ago.The Bowron clearcut can apparently be seen from Mars, or wherever those guys come from.

It's a well kept secret, but we live in a virtual desert, bereft of life, especially bears. No fish either. Oh, and just two golf courses for the whole Province.

All the fruit trees in the Okanagan were cleared to make room for condos, which is why you see apples from Chile and New Zealand in the stores.

Nope, nothing to see here, except the Olympics in 2010, which we all believe will be "revenue positive".

I don't know why any of us stay, mass masochism, perhaps?

If you want to hear really silly and stupid comments, you should work at a Cdn port, as a Border guard. I will always remember the tourist that was only going to be in Canada for about 3 hours. He was going to Alaska. Then there were the ones who were only going a few miles, to see the thatched roofs in Quebec. This was at the AB crossing of Coutts AB. One woman actually went back to Great Fall, Montana, as she didn't have the chains etc needed to go to Alaska. She didn't think she could buy such things in Canada. This was 30 years ago, I remember because I was there the day Elvis died. Then there was the young girl, about 6, who said in shock, look mom, they have television here. Wonder if these tourists are still so ignorant of Canada.

Posted by: MaryT at August 16, 2007 7:07 PM

...oh you can bet it MaryT. Just ordered a laptop and asked what shipping costs would be to Calgary, Alberta and the guy replied "what country?"

This is from California...

Posted by: tomax7 at August 16, 2007 7:31 PM

The trees are too thick... and the lawns aren't brown.

Westerners and Americans were known to leave their cars in NB and catch the ferry to PEI, to walk around the island and return later that day.

If you can watch your dog run away for 3 days, and still have a clear shot at him...

You might be from Saskatchewan.

...sorry Kate :P

Posted by: Nightmare at August 16, 2007 8:42 PM

Nightmare "if you want watch your dog run away..."

bah.. not TRUE! Maybe where Kate is right now and is from but in northwestern Sask you can't see very far! Some places around here are having trouble getting high speed internet (off of a private company of course) because they can't get a clear line of sight over the TREES AND HILLS!!

That being said.. I did grow up in the southern part of the province so I would have to agree with your Dad's assessment Kate. And I know my boyfriend who has lived here northwest of Saskatoon all his life would also agree with the D9 theory.

Posted by: Melissa at August 16, 2007 9:06 PM

You have trees!? Growing up on the Red River flood plain in southern manitoba, the tallest green things we saw were traffic lights!

Everyone in the country had a D9 for throwing up a quick berm about the entire lot to keep old man river out (especially after old Duff decided Whinnypeg should remain dry and who cares about the goyim outside?) and a D11 for serious stuff (like bragging about)

:-)

Last summer we were in Peggys Cove N.S. And on the radio they had the "dumbest Tourist question of the day." A woman from the U.S apparently asked what they do with all the boulders in the winter!!

"Last summer we were in Peggys Cove N.S. And on the radio they had the "dumbest Tourist question of the day." A woman from the U.S apparently asked what they do with all the boulders in the winter!!"

Answer: That's easy, they pile them up behind the barn in Banff where they keep the elk overnight.

I was posted in Moose Juice and the biggest hill I saw there was the Belle Plaine overpass! Of course that didn't include the Saskatoon landfill pile called Mount Jockstrap.

Like the children in Regina who use the ditch beside #1 HWY to toboggan.

Posted by: Kate at August 16, 2007 10:26 PM

Of course the real reason there are so many ex Sask. Pats living in BC is because they are too scared to drive back through the mountains.

Posted by: Joe at August 16, 2007 11:05 PM

When the people of Sask. want to see a long ways they just look to the horizon. When we in B.C. want to see a long ways we look straight up. While you can see up to 100 miles we get to see millions of light years.

Posted by: truthsayer at August 16, 2007 11:36 PM

While you can see up to 100 miles we get to see millions of light years.

I grew up in Southern Sask in a small town.
I now live in a city in the Fraser Valley.
You could see 100 times the stars in Sask as well as magnificent displays of the northern lights.
Sask is truly the Land of Living Skys, but BC is Green all year round.

Kate, here's one for your Dad

http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/science/08/16/ireland.eagles.reut/index.html

DUBLIN, Ireland (Reuters) -- An eagle that disappeared from Ireland more than 100 years ago took flight again on Thursday as part of a scheme to reintroduce native birds of prey to the country.

Ireland's Environment Minister released six young white-tailed eagles, one of the world's largest birds of prey, into a national park in the southwestern county of Kerry.

"These eagles had pride of place in the cultural and natural heritage of Ireland for hundreds of years but due to trapping and shooting in the 19th and early 20th centuries they became extinct," Minister John Gormley said.

The eagle chicks came from Norway and were flown into Kerry in June. Some 15 chicks will be brought into the region annually over the next five years as part of the reintroduction.

I understand that big time enviromentalists wacko TED(DADDY GREENBUCKS)TURNER gives to the various eco-wackos while logging mining and developed

Many people probably don't realize that Ireland had very few forests about 30 years ago. They started a reforestation program after they broke free from Britain and became a republic and they started replanting indigenous trees. So if you haven't been in Ireland for a long time it's a big shocker to burn it from Moville to Buncrana (Lough Foyle to Lough Swilly) over the MacGilligan Mountains and suddenly see pine forests all over the place.

Posted by: cconn at August 17, 2007 1:01 AM

Sorry, It's the MacQuigley Mountains - MacGilligan in on the Northern Irish side.
