Y2Kyoto: Hummer Your Way To A Better Climate

Save the planet - get your dirty feet off it;

Food production is now so energy-intensive that more carbon is emitted providing a person with enough calories to walk to the shops than a car would emit over the same distance. The climate could benefit if people avoided exercise, ate less and became couch potatoes. Provided, of course, they remembered to switch off the TV rather than leaving it on standby.

The sums were done by Chris Goodall, campaigning author of How to Live a Low-Carbon Life, based on the greenhouse gases created by intensive beef production. “Driving a typical UK car for 3 miles [4.8km] adds about 0.9 kg [2lb] of CO2 to the atmosphere,” he said, a calculation based on the Government’s official fuel emission figures. “If you walked instead, it would use about 180 calories. You’d need about 100g of beef to replace those calories, resulting in 3.6kg of emissions, or four times as much as driving.

“The troubling fact is that taking a lot of exercise and then eating a bit more food is not good for the global atmosphere. Eating less and driving to save energy would be better.”

It's official. The only way to meet the one tonne challenge is to kill somebody.

I do believe that is the plan. We are to eat the deceased raw, and use their bones for spears. No use letting their carcass go to waste.

He sounds like another one of those wackos with their crazy ideas how nutty can they get?

Given the weather stations, this stuff just keeps getting funnier. Wadda maroon. :)

too bad the study wasn't about CO2 emissions from the study/worry/yapping of global warming compared to those of doing nothing.

Ah, the lunacy of the carbonistas is taken to the extreme, ridiculous limit.

You all know that this info will help those on the far left push their veggie/vegan agendas, right?

Kill Somebody!
So that's what socialized medicine is for ... population reduction!
Should have known..............

I was waiting for this one - don't exercise and reduce CO2 emissions.

Shall we call the gym types climate fitness criminals?

Posted by: Shamrock at August 10, 2007 11:15 AM

Guess the new government should make roadkills legal for food consumption. Kate, you would be the first to advocate for that, wouldn't you?

I just saw a pretty fat raccoon on the roadside on my way to work by car...

Posted by: Aaron at August 10, 2007 11:27 AM

OMMAG, ever notice how the climate Nazis are the same ones pushing gun control, socialized medicine, high taxation etc?

Coincidence?

Posted by: The Phantom at August 10, 2007 11:37 AM

that's assuming we all eat beef to the exclusion of every other type of food available. Another "study" rendered meaningless ruined by ridiculous assumptions...

Speaking of energy conserving myths, I wonder what the carbon footprint is of a new energy-efficient appliance versus my old one?

energy to get and make materials, transport them, manufacture them into the finished product, transport that to some huge store (that also took energy to build and then heat), dispose of the old one, plus the energy it takes to run my new energy efficient appliance

versus

energy to run my old appliance (I don't have to count all the other stuff since it's already sitting in my house).

Is anyone thinking about this stuff? But maybe it's unfair of me to expect more from those who accept Global Warming hook, line and sinker.

Posted by: JaneL at August 10, 2007 12:16 PM

All green/climate dogma has ideological roots in population control. It's elitist darwinist eugenics and depopulation advocacy tarted up in a sanitizing green wrapper.

It's an appeal for incremental global population liquidation...for the earth....for the children....as a global village.....now do your duty and line up for "showers".

The environmentalist movement was formed by Sir Julian Huxley who was the founder of the Eugenics Society, the WWF and these other organizations are actually offshoots of that eugenics society.

How about this:

If you believe in saving the planet through Kyoto:

1)Don't breed, and
2)Kill yourself.

The rest of us will not miss you.

Geez. So now my 4 mile run is bad for the environment? Is there any activity I can participate in? Running, walking, boating, hunting, fishing, sports, cars, eating meat, light bulbs, air conditioning, sex(if it leads to babies), computers, making money and cigarettes. These leftards just want us(not them)living in caves and sitting on our butts. I think not. Time for a jog, then a steak, then some on-line poker, then a beer, then a smoke, then a ride in the boat, then some fishing, and then all leftards can blow.

This, from a man who has made $Billions from various endevours, such as oil and gas, and who cruises the world on private jets.

"[industrial countries] developed and benefited from the unsustainable patterns of production and consumption which have produced our present dilemma. It is clear that current lifestyles and consumption patterns of the affluent middle class -- involving high meat intake, consumption of large amounts of frozen and convenience foods, use of fossil fuels, appliances, home and work-place air-conditioning, and suburban housing -- are not sustainable. A shift is necessary toward lifestyles less geared to environmentally damaging consumption patterns." Maurice Strong, Rio Conference, Earth Summit II 1992

Do you wonder where most of the eco-fanatics money comes from ?? Try the United Nations. Maurice Strong started the world down this route a long time ago.

Apparently there was a bug in the program used by NASA to compile temperature data. In fact, 1998 was not the warmest year on record; 1934 was. And, five of the ten warmest years in the last 100 occurred prior to WWII. Here's the link:

But we don't get 100% of our calories from beef so I'd take his comments with a grain of salt.

"OMMAG, ever notice how the climate Nazis are the same ones pushing gun control, socialized medicine, high taxation etc?"

Ever notice how people who think Jesus is about to show up, think GWH is swell, think the world is 6,000 years old and people who think AGW is a communist conspiracy tend to be the same?

Posted by: Jose at August 10, 2007 12:50 PM

This article just shows how ridiculious it is in the first place to be concerned about CO2 emissions. The miniscule amount of CO2 emissions humans are responsible for is negligible at best, and therefore, are a non-issue. Plants take in CO2 and give out oxygen; just plant a tree or two.

Posted by: Joanne at August 10, 2007 12:50 PM

Pestilence and famine? In Canada? Are you serious? Maybe in some third world countries, but in Canada? Buddy, you are taking this fear mongering routine to a whole new level. LMFAO

Posted by: kingstontard at August 10, 2007 12:51 PM

The last time I read a beef is bad for the environment article I had a well thought out solution. Hunting. Not only would an "eat what you kill" policy require less livestock but also get rid of those pesky CO2 polluting deer. Hunters therefore should be granted carbon offsets in recognition of their effort to help reduce GW.

Mandatory hunting = livestock problem solved

I have heard of the Malthus fear-mongering food shortages all my life. He said we were to run out of food, when ? a hundred years ago ??

The nice thing about the fear-monger's 'end-of-the-world' thing is that it never happens ----- so we get to see a new virsion every few years.

End Of The World Coming Soon ...... Again.

The world is running out of oil ---- heard that before too.

Just before oil was brought into production, fear-mongers of the day said the world would run out of hay --- too many horses in NYC !!

Some people in the Third World have a food shortage problem because of the "system". Turn the Farmers loose on the production front and there would be food a plenty for all.

"System" ?? --- Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), USDA, Japan Food Program, CWB, ... ensure cheap food is available in the First World by maintaining a carry-over --- even if it means food shortages you know where :)

Over-population, you say ??

To maintain a population you need 2.1 births per women. From memory; Spain 1.1, Poland 1.3, Russia 1.0, Canada 1.5, USA 2.0

Can you say world population collapse by mid century ??

The whole Kyoto thing was Maurice Strong's (UN) idea to save the world ---- collapse the western world's economy, collapse pop growth and save mother earth for Suzuki and his cave-men ----- and the frogs. Croak.

Posted by: ron in kelowna at August 10, 2007 4:25 PM

Many believe we are now past peek oil and if that is the case one could argue that we are have seen peek fertilizer.

Poor Alby doesn't know that oil isn't the only source of ammonia. There's sure no shortage of coal.

I for one, after I barbque this big rib steak and load my big potato with all the bountiful toppings I help create, and a few pils, will begin to stop this terrible scourge. I think I have located the thermostat for the sun, yes I have narrowed it down to two places, Balzac Alberta, or Biggar Sask. I'm sure. These two places enjoy a good joke and I am sure some of their fair citizens have been turning up that thermostat just to piss off the idiots of the world. While I enjoy a good joke as much as the next conservative, I am starting to worry about all the stinking lieberals that are lighting their hair of fire contributing to their great cause climate change, global warming or whatever it will be called next. So as soon as I am ready I will don a cape, get a designated driver and single handedly save all you liberal jack-asses like alby, why I don't know, just for laughs I guess, liberals always provide something to laugh at.

Posted by: bartinsky at August 10, 2007 4:54 PM

Alby just provd WLM's point.....

Hmm I have been hearing about overpopulation since the 70's when the earths pop was just approaching 4 billion, now its approaching 7 and there are in fact food surpluses.

You knwo the societies that have been under pop control are "western" i include Japan in that.

So Alby what do we do about all the brown people in Afric, Asia and the middle east????

Thats where the growth is coming from.

Now if you argue that they use less carbon on a percaptia basis I would say that on an effciency basis, most wealth etc produced for a given gram of carbon that Wetsrn societies win hands down.

Amazing. We need to depopulate, so whats the solution Alby? Where should it take place, how should it be enforced and who should decide. Enquiring minds want to know the whole plan if you are willing to share.

How many Indians, Mexicans, Nigerians, Pakistani's or Chinese should we get rid of? What religon are you talking about....the home of Catholicism, Italy, cant eve replace its population?

I think we have a self loathing problem here.

Posted by: Stephen at August 10, 2007 5:02 PM

Comments remind me of study done in Chicago in mid 19th century. It extrapolated population growth with that of the horses in Chicago and concluded that, by 1930, the entire city would be covered in 3 feet of horse s**t.

Often, something comes along, like the automobile, in this case, and changes assumptions about the future.

"Can you say world population collapse by mid century ??"

Total population is going up, not down, we're looking at hitting 9 billion by mid century.

Live births per woman,

1st # 1970-75
2nd # 2000-05

World av.
70-75 > 4.5
00-05 > 2.6

2.6 as of 2005 is not much above the 'hold-our-own' number of 2.6 -- down sharply from 4.5 in 1975.

Perhaps we are already below replacement.

All developing countries 5.5 2.9
Least developed countries 6.6 5.0
Arab States 6.7 3.7
East Asia and the Pacific 5.0 1.9
Latin America and the Caribbean 5.1 2.5
South Asia 5.6 3.2
Sub-Saharan Africa 6.8 5.5
Central and Eastern Europe and the CIS 2.5 1.5
OECD 2.6 1.8
High-income OECD 2.2 1.6

High human development 2.5 1.7
Medium human development 5.0 2.5
Low human development 7.0 5.8

High income 2.2 1.7
Middle income 4.5 2.1
Low income 6.0 3.9

World 4.5 2.6

We don't need the Kyoto Kult anymore as Hansen and the GISS(the big alarmist pushers) now admit there ain't much GW.

And soon the Earth's population may also be in decline.

So what, pray tell, will be the next calamity to require the western world to give up 'room-temperature' and 'steak on the BBQ' ??

Since mankind appeared he strived for food, shelter and water. But 'Dave the cave Suzuki' and his Prophet Albert Gore want us to repent. Just send $$s to Maurice Strong. They all don't have enough yet :)

Posted by: Joanne at August 10, 2007 11:24 PM

Alby dear, you think fertilizer is made from...oil?

Every time I think I've discovered the depth of your ignorance, you surpass your previous efforts and dig even deeper.

Fertilizer is made from ammonia and phosphate.

www.ontariocorn.org/envt/envsust.html

Read and learn. This is a nice greenie site so you should feel right at home.

Ammonia is pretty much made from air, heat and hydrogen via the Haber process. Here's a wiki so you'll be comfy.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ammonia_production

Now, about peak oil. Not "peek", peak. Its a theory. The theory is that we are at the maximum possible production of oil right now because all the easy stuff is getting used up. AKA the Arabs are depleteing their fields and can't keep it up forever.

IMHO it is a -crap- opinion because it ignores the gigatons of oil sands in Canada and other places in the world, and it ignores human ingenuity too.

As somebody mentioned up above you've also forgotten all the nice coal in the world. The -only- reason to avoid coal is AGW, and as we have seen of late AGW is looking more and more like the hula hoop.

This, dear, dear Alby is why we mock you. Because you don't know your ass from a hole in the ground.

Jose, do you even read the comments? CAN you even read the comments?

I think AGW being a conspiracy has been pretty well substantiated here the last couple of days. Whether its a communist conspiracy is open to question. If you don't like it, tfb for you because that ship has sailed.

I don't think George W. Bush is "swell". That's who you meant, right? I think his domestic policies are crap, his tax cuts fizzled after a good start and his Homeland Security effort was a friggin' disaster. Oh, and the Immigration Department is every bit as huge a cluster f**k today as it was when I told them to shove it and came home back in 2002. At great personal expense I might add.

His one bright spot in a sea of mediocrity is his foreign policy and war fighting. With that he's better than Regan or Roosevelt.

My religious beliefs, if any, are none of your f-ing business. I do not parade them here or at my web site, nor do I make religious beliefs the basis of public policy arguments.

Keep your hate to yourself, monkey boy.

Alby, imagine a nation that has a 3/4 male population between the ages of 0 and 25. One chick for every three testosterone poisoned boys because their parents took your pills to save Mother Earth.

And remember, gayness usually runs ~2-4% in a population. Two to four out of a hundred guys are going to be real happy, the other 96-99 of 'em are going be wrecking the place.

You must really hate the brown people Alby. Or is it that you just think you're so much smarter than them that they should run with whatever idea pops into your fertile brain and hope it works out?

Freedom, Alby. Difficult concept for you, but work with me here.

Posted by: The Phantom at August 11, 2007 12:33 AM

Yes Alby, I did. Its why I get extremely angry every time some greenie starts in about bio-fuel. If ever there was a made for TV crock, bio-fuel is it. Brown people starving in Bongo Bongo and these imbeciles want to burn food to save the friggin' planet.

But you seem to have missed the point. Fertilizer is not made from oil. You can make lots and lots without oil. You need heat and hydrogen. That's it. There will be no food shortage so long as Western Civilization continues to function, because if there's a buck in oil-free ammonia, some genius will figure a way.

And by George, you missed the other point too. The brown people have -rights- Alby. You can't just reduce their numbers because its inconvenient to have so many of them cluttering up the place. Objecting to us racist/bigot/homophobe meanies calling 'em brown people doesn't make it ok to plot their destruction.

Go back and read that post of yours again Alby, I'm actually stunned you said that. WTF are you thinking?

Posted by: ol hoss at August 11, 2007 1:24 AM

alby, have you heard of demographic transition. In traditional societies, crude death rates (CDR) and crude birth rates (CBR) are high. As societies modernize and, for example medical advances, then people are healthier and become more secure, so CDR fall and CBR rise, causing population explosion. As society modernizes into industrial from traditional, then CBR falls as well as CDR (ie-western society). So, industrialized urban (free and democratic) checks runaway population growth.

I know I didn't get this theory right on, but hopefully my point is understood - society is dynamic, not static. IOW, nature has a way of self-correcting. We are still animals, neverheless a higher form here on earth, reacting to our environment.

Posted by: Shamrock at August 11, 2007 12:33 PM
