British Columbia, west coast ports, scores of native bands and Super Dave Suzuki may well be SOL.

[Third-largest U.S. oil firm is willing to pay billions to pump Alberta crude to Gulf Coast refineries.] G&M
[The prospect of an expansion of the U.S. market for Canadian crude comes just a week after Chinese oil officials pulled the plug on their involvement in the Gateway pipeline project that would deliver oil sands crude to the West Coast for delivery to Asian markets.]
[Industry insiders have long acknowledged that the Gateway pipeline project faced huge hurdles, because Alberta producers have shown a clear preference for the U.S. market, and the route would have required right-of-way deals with scores of native bands.]
[U.S.-based energy economist James Williams said access to the Gulf Coast would help ensure robust markets for vastly expanded oil sands production, which could reach 3.5 million barrels a day by 2020.] G&M

3,500,000 bbl per day !! That is well into some Middle East counties territory.

2004
Saudi Arabia 10.37 MBD
Iran 4.09
UAE 2.76
Kuwait 2.51
Iraq 2.03
Canada 3.14

Alberta Tar Sands alone possible production by 2020 --- 3.50 MBD

Although tar sands occur in more than 70 countries, the two largest are Canada and Venezuela, with the bulk being found in four different regions of Alberta, Canada: areas of Athabasca, Wabasha, Cold Lake and Peace River. The sum of these covers an area of nearly 77,000 km2. In fact, the reserve that is deemed to be technologically retrievable today is estimated at 280-300Gb (billion barrels).

This is larger than the Saudi Arabia oil reserves, which are estimated at 240Gb. The total reserves for Alberta, including oil not recoverable using current technology, are estimated at 1,700- 2,500Gb.

As the media would put it --- to make headlines;

"Alberta has as much as 2,500,000,000,000 barrels of oil. Two and a half Trillion !!"

Some other provinces have lots also ---- but just want to leave it undergound. To each his own.

A century ago, hay for the 'hay-burners' was a hot topic. 'Stop using it --- we will run out.'

Oil made hay more or less redundant as a major fuel. In this century, something new could do it to oil.

Al Qaeda has demonstrated a clear intent to acquire weapons of mass destruction. In 1993, Osama bin Laden attempted to buy uranium from a source in the Sudan.

He has stated that it is Al Qaeda's duty to acquire weapons of mass destruction. And he has made repeated recruiting pitches for experts in chemistry, physics, and explosives to join his terrorist movement.

Also, caught something about trial in BC,where man being charged for gun crime..simply because gun was within reach,in his car, when holding up store. He did NOT use gun,but he COULD have!

RCMP using attack dogs against unarmed and non-dangerous male citizens as standard operating procedure, everyone pretends not to notice:

"OTTAWA -- The RCMP public complaints commission is recommending the Mounties' attack dogs be classified as "impact weapons" after one of the animals ripped apart a suspect's leg earlier this year.

The designation should curb the use of attack dogs on suspects who are merely unco-operative or resistant as opposed to armed, threatening or aggressive, the commission said in its annual report to Parliament.
...
The recommendation comes after a 22-year-old B.C. resident was severely bitten by a police dog, suffering several puncture wounds, a deep laceration and two 10-by-five-centimetre gouges that left the man's leg muscle deformed.

The unarmed man had been involved in a dispute with his father, was thought to be suicidal and was running away from police in broad daylight."

Sammy, re the great (sarc/off) GEN[eration]II Global Peace Initiative, brought to you by Justin Trudeau and other offspring of famous fathers and grandfathers, see my blog comments at Canadian Blue Lemons: "Chompin' at the Savoy for World Poverty," July 17, and "Update on GEN II Peace Initiative: Realizing the Dream or Just Living in a Dream World?," July 18.

http://canadianbluelemons.blogspot.com/

The only thing most of these young upstarts have to show for their breathtaking audacity in proposing that they are "peace keepers" (at no cost to themselves) in the world's most troubled areas, is the names of their illustrious (and not-so-illustrious) parents and grandparents.

In a word, the MSM is paying attention to them because of NEPOTISM, something the CBC is particularly guilty of: Avi Lewis, anyone? I'm surprised he and Keifer Sutherland weren't on the invitation list of this oh-so-chi-chi gathering at one of London's swankest hotels, The Savoy.

"RCMP using attack dogs against unarmed and non-dangerous male citizens as standard operating procedure" is completely invalid.

Jim Travers is a Liberal propagandist, in the valid sense of the term 'propaganda', a deliberate agenda of manipulating the reader to accept his ideology. His distortions, misinformation, selective perception and hostile comments - all part of the Liberal propaganda system that is our MSM. And there are many like him; but blogs are powerful - and these pundits aren't the sole voice anymore.

'Rectify injustice' against Israel, Cotler tells U.S.

Steven Edwards, CanWest News Service
Published: Friday, July 20, 2007

NEW YORK - Former justice minister Irwin Cotler and other Canadian scholars presented the U.S. Congress yesterday with its first testimony on Jews driven from Arab lands following Israel's creation in 1948.

The group was among experts helping U.S. lawmakers decide on a pair of bills that would oblige the Bush administration to actively oppose the Arab-led practice in Middle East peace efforts to speak only of Palestinian refugees.

While key Arab voices continue to push for a "right of return" for descendants of some 600,000 Palestinians whose pre-1948 homes are now inside Israel, the general discourse for decades has all but ignored tens of thousands of Jews, Christians and other minorities who were similarly turned into refugees.

"The time has come to rectify this historical injustice," Mr. Cotler told members of the Congressional Human Rights Caucus in Washington in a written statement. He argued the United Nations, where Arab countries have mustered majority backing from Muslim and developing states to pass 101 resolutions speaking only of Palestinian refugees, bears "express responsibility for the distorted narrative."

A logical analysis of Stephen Harper's foreign policy boners by....wtf??? Adam Radwanski? Blind squirrel, meet acorn:

"I suggested to a Liberal the other day that Harper's biggest mistake had been wrapping himself in the Afghanistan mission the way he did. The Liberals, who sent our troops into Kandahar, gave it a soft sell - never trying to claim it as a defining policy - and took pretty minimal heat for it. Harper could have kept that up, acknowledging a consensus with the Liberals on the matter, and when things went sour it would've been impossible for anyone to blame it on him. Instead, he tried to make it his war, and did it in the stupidest possible way - adopting a Bushian language and tone in which he posed for copious photo-ops with troops, accused the opposition of loving the Taliban and started using terms like "cut and run." Naturally, this backfired spectacularly; now the mission is increasingly unpopular, and so is he."

Has anyone else caught the bit on Pravda about the Supreme Court of Canada's ruling regarding gun crimes?

According to the court, a gun doesn't have to actually have to be used in the commission of a crime for the crime to be elevated to "gun crime" status. The gun needs to only be readily availabe.

So, does this mean that, if you slap a person in the face while standing in your kitchen, it is assault with a weapon because there are knives that are "readily available"?

Or, if you slap someone in the face in your garage, might it be called aggravated assault because there is a baseball bat lying nearby?

This ruling really deserves an extra dose of outrage. To claim that a weapon is used in the commission of a crime simply because it is available and not because it was actually used is incredibly scary.

1. The latest news, photos and interactives from Canada's mission in Afghanistan.

2. Bill Doskoch looks at the mission in Afghanistan. Time for a re-think?

3. CTV's South Asia bureau chief speaks with women so desperate, they are turning to suicide.

5. Gator deaths prompt a disturbing new assessment of the danger in Afghanistan.

6. Profiles of the Canadian casualties in Afghanistan since April 2002.

Perhaps I should be directing my comment to Kate as to why she tolerates maz's cut and paste routine. After all it is her blog and perhaps she knows something we don't.

Posted by: Bcer at July 20, 2007 6:07 PM

Actually, bcer, I'm not objecting to maz2's cut and paste; it's not my blog. I'm objecting to the only comments he adds to his cut and paste; namely, his childish mocking of the Chinese language. Why does he do it only for Chinese and not for other languages?

Chinese doesn't have an 'r' sound, except a bit at the end of words but not at the beginning or middle. And, it requires 'tones' added to the phonetic sounds. When you learn a primary language, you learn the phonetics of that language and find it difficult to learn the phonetics of another language - particularly if you are trying to learn the second language as an adult.

So, most non-Dutch speaking people find certain words in Dutch almost impossible to pronounce. It's hard to lose the English rhythm and phonetics when you are trying to learn French or Italian or Spanish. Some Russian and German sounds are very difficult for English speakers. And so on.

So, what is maz2's point in mocking the difficulty Chinese have in pronouncing English words? What's his point?

I don't know what his original point was, maybe just having a little fun (though I take your point that if you're Chinese, you might not find his joshing very funny).

But, his point, at this point, is, I think, to pull your pigtails, ET. I keep getting the picture of Anne of Green Gables and Gilbert...and Gilbert getting a slate broken over his head.

maz2 had better be careful...

MM, thanks for the Coren link although his whiny left wing panelist made me want to CTRL-ALT-DEL that file into oblivion. Her unabashed defence of the royal family of the NDP was pathetic. Her entire diatribe was how Ayaan Hirsi Ali was now a member of a "Right Wing" think tank so everything she said was suspect. BTW, anyone ever hear about a "left Wing" think tank?

To dismiss all of Ms Ali's experience because she doesn't agree with the leftoid domga is down right stupid. I think Avi Lewis should confine his interviewing to participants in the Gay Pride Parade or SOWs (Status of Women board members). I was going to say soccer moms but they would probably tear a strip off him too.

Posted by: Texas Canuck at July 20, 2007 7:45 PM

Yes, 'been around the block'- maz2 may be trying to pull my pigtails, but, isn't that something that an eight year old does? Not a mature adult.

by the way, I wrote Jim Travers, the esteemed columnist of the Toronto Star, and sent him Jack's Newswatch's comments on Travers really offensive column on Harper.

Traver's columns constantly 'bash' Harper, sneer at him, at the CPC, constantly call Harper a clone or copy of Bush, constantly deride him for being close to America. All typical Liberal sophistry. Travers, however, gets into a snit if you call him a Liberal. He self-defines himself as a 'small-l liberal'. Heh. That's exactly what he isn't.

At any rate, here is Traver's response to me:

"Fortunately people whose opinions I respect have other opinions which they express with far more eloquence and without childish invective What I don't understabd is why its so important to you to be so uncivil. You must live in a very small, very mean world. In any case this has become tedious so I am taking an unusual step Future msgs from you will be deleted unread as spam. Rgds"

Notice what he says - that I am uncivil; he ignores that his constant denigration of Harper, his misinforming the public about Conservative policies etc - is extremely uncivil. He's the one who lives in a small world - the closed cronyism of the Liberals. And, like all Liberals, he can't handle criticism.

rich fisher - I don't object to mocking a specific individual, such as Dion, which would actually be a comment on his arrogance in assuming that he can be PM of all of Canada - when he can't even speak the language of 80% of that population. This is entirely and completely different from what maz2 is doing.

He is mocking all Chinese. What's the point of that?

As I said, I'm not talking about his endless cut and paste. I'm asking for his point on mocking all Chinese who are trying to speak a language when they haven't acquired the phonetic capacity for that language.

We trade with the Netherlands and I've already said how difficult it can be to pronounce Dutch. Should the Dutch mock we Canadians because we can't speak their language correctly?

So- what's his point? I repeat- it's the behaviour of an 8 year old.

It's funny, ET.
Eight year olds can be hilarious some times.
I despise toilet humour more than anybody, but the lamest joke in the world to me, is universely funny.
An alien (ET of another sort) could get off his ship walk or slither or roll up to the first human contact, let a fart, and everybody would get it.
We would all laugh, there is no explaining what's funny, we would instantly find common ground. The aliens would appeal to our natural happy state.
Hi brow or low brow all types of humour will a get you laughing sometime.
Somethings are just funny.
All the great salesmen, politicians (except Dion)and speech writers (except Dion's golf joke writer)know, "start with a joke"

Maz2 does'nt seem to restrict himself to only Chinese speech patterns as far as I can tell.
Even if he did it might be the only voice in his repertoire.

I'm not speaking for maz2 or making excuses for him but my take on his point (No disrespect ET, thanks for asking) is; Chretien, Martin and Chairman Moe deserve all the nefarious accolades that painting a happy face on China for years and cosying up to their corrupt murderous junta can bring. I believe maz2 is just lightening the mood through humour before his shot.
Kate, Steyn, Kathy Shaidle,... all the best, but never the left, do it with devastating effect.
