"Ella Vogelaar, the Dutch Minister for Residence, Neighborhoods and Integration ('voo Wonen, Wijken en Integratie') stated in an interview the 'The Netherlands will be Islamic at some point in the future'...She feels that the Netherlands should adapt to Islam, and subsidize Islamic institutions. Posted by: tranio at July 19, 2007 1:55 AMI know that to many here, the New Yorker magazine is the epitome of the left-wing MSM; however, I would encourage you to visit their website, cleverly disguised as "newyorker.com", and click on two articles: "Pakistan" and "opium". The former describes the tightrope that Musharraf is walking in Pakistan, and why, despite the fact that so-called secularized moderates are leading many of the protests against him, his ouster will probably lead to another Islamist state.
The second article describes the UN's opium poppy eradication program in northern Afghanistan, where our brave Dutch allies are supporting the program, if by support, you mean hiding in their bases while sending out private contractors armed with handweapons, and riding in ATV's. The article goes on to describe how those who have paid bribes to the local Afghan chieftains have their fields left untouched, while the poor sharecroppers who can't afford the bribes see all their crops - not just the opium, but their wheat, watermelons, etc. - uprooted by indiscriminate UN forces. To be fair, the article also mentions the complete and utter disgust of the UN force that they are not allowed to cross the river, and start uprooting the "protected" fields.
This comes back to a point I made in another thread a few days ago: the trappings of democracy are one thing; the spirit of democracy is another. Until the lowliest citizen believes he's going to get a fair shake, that the police will not hit him up for bribes or "protection money", or that judges cannot be bought by the wealthy, all the efforts to instill democracy are useless. I wish someone could cram this simple fact into Taliban Jack's tiny little brain.

More than 60 of these letters were made public today as part of a FBI document dump in response to a government sunshine lawsuit centered on the FBI's abuse of a key Patriot Act power.

I was planning to take a break from writing about Sweden, but I just couldn’t help it. Swedish journalist Kurt Lundgren had a noteworthy story on his blog this week. A friend told him about a magazine published by Lärarförbundet, the Swedish Teachers’ Union, the largest union for teachers and heads of schools in the country. The magazine, aimed at preschool teachers who take care of children between the ages of 0-6 years old, included recommendations to not only promote “gender equality” but also “sexual equality” at this tender age. Mr. Lundgren considers the suggestions that are sent out to kindergarten and preschool staff to be clear-cut sexual abuse of children:
“A three-year-old doesn’t have to learn queer theory, a four-year-old shouldn’t have to be force-fed lectures on gay sex by some sex freak from the Teachers’ Union. Children are supposed to play and discover their roles entirely on their own. Children are defenseless and shouldn’t be exposed to indoctrination, neither regarding sex nor politics.. (…) One wonders whether parents are aware of the abuses against preschool children that that Teachers’ Union’s magazine Pedagogiska magasinet is encouraging.”
In a kindergarten in Stockholm, the parents were encouraged by the preschool teachers - apparently ideological pioneers - to equip their sons with dresses and female first names. There are now weeks in some places when boys HAVE TO wear a dress. Lundgren considers this sexual indoctrination as worse than the political: “The political nonsense is seeking to alter opinions - the sex freaks seek to alter the children’s personality, their mentality and their entire constitution.
...
Meanwhile, Sweden is in the midst of the most explosive rape wave in Scandinavian history, largely caused by immigration. While Swedish girls are called “whores” by Muslim immigrants, Swedish boys are told to wear a dress and study queer theory.”

A DISTURBING video that appears to show a toddler on ecstasy is being probed by detectives.
The two-and-a-half minute clip features a little girl rolling her eyes back in her head as a group of women look on and laugh.
At one point, the tot appears unresponsive when earphones from an iPod are put on her.
One of the women suggests the drug ecstasy - which has a slang name "X" - might be responsible for the condition of the girl, who looks about two years old.
As she squeezes her cheeks and taps her on her head, she says: "Cookie, stop rolling, girl. You shouldn't have popped no X."

...
Israeli men can avoid service in several ways. The growing number of Ultra-Orthodox Jews have special dispensation to continue religious studies, while convicted criminals are barred from serving, as are the ill and infirm.
But some young Israelis travel overseas beyond the reach of the army authorities and there is some evidence of people pretending to have mental illness to avoid service.

Hybrids losing popularity to diesels
J.D. Power has released the results of their second annual Alternative Powertrain Study and the number of people considering a hybrid has dipped from fifty-seven percent last year to only fifty percent.
They found that hybrid intenders are willing to pay up to $2,396 extra and expect an extra 18.5mpg with a hybrid. While the price differential is possible with tax credits, that mileage improvement is totally unrealistic.
During the same time period the number of drivers willing to consider a diesel jumped from twelve to twenty-three percent.

Preventing the West from Understanding Jihad
American Thinker ^ | JUly 17, 2007 | Walid Phares
In the years that followed 9/11, two phenomena characterized the Western public's understanding of the terrorists' ideology. The first characteristic stemmed from the statements made by the jihadists themselves. [...]
The second phenomenon of help to the public was the surfacing of a new literature produced by alternative scholars, analysts, journalists, experts, and researchers who, from different backgrounds and countries, filled in some of the gaps is "jihadi studies." Producing books, articles, and blogs from Europe, India, the Middle East, and North America, a combination of Third World-born and Western-issued scholarship began to provide the "missing link" as to what Jihadism is all about. These factors came together to shift the debate from "Jihad is spiritual yoga" to "Why didn't we know it was something else as well?" And this triggered in response one of the last attempts to prevent jihad from being understood.[...]

All I got back was muslim apologist sites, sites that declared Christian attrocities, Hindu attrocities, etc. etc. However, nothing on Muslim genocides, ie, the estimated 80 million Hindu's killed, the Ottoman genocide of Armenians and Christians, etc.
I then googled Nazi and communist genocides. Of course, I got back all kinds of sites pertaining to this.
For some reason, Google is skewing, if not editing out the true horrors of Islam and in some cases replacing it with lies and deceipt.

An essay by Terry Mattingly describes the primitive superstition which lies behind the conspiracy theories that are spreading like viruses through Pakistan, roiling the waters and causing unrest.
In reading his article, I was reminded that human beings are, above all, reasoning creatures. That this faculty can be short-circuited by the notion that other people (or groups of people) conspire against us, bears witness to two tendencies. One is our susceptibility to project onto others what we most fear, and the other is our laziness: in a perversion of Occam’s razor we settle for the crudest explanation for a phenomenon — or an imagined one — so that “reason” gives us the needed justification for going on the attack.
Here’s the example that Mattingly uses:
The rumor spread across Pakistan in a blitz of text messages on cell phones.
There was a killer virus on the loose, and all you had to do to catch it was answer a call from an infected number. The virus didn’t hurt cell phones but would — eyewitnesses confirmed this — cause users to drop dead. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority was forced to issue a denial, telling users that it was safe to turn their phones back on.
Unfortunately, Pakistan doesn’t have a Snopes page — a place to check out things like the latest weird email your co-worker sends you about a new destructive virus that eats your hard drive and metastasizes into a blood-sucking robot that will consume you and your mates in short order.
It will come as no surprise that many of the viruses in Pakistan often have one origin: the all powerful, evil Joooos:
Then there were messages claiming that Israeli trucks were carrying a million HIV-infected melons to Arab consumers in a new biological-warfare plot. This was not to be confused with other urban legends about a “Western-Zionist conspiracy” to use polio vaccines and other medical means to sterilize the next generation of Muslims.

Current of joy powers The Elders' peace gathering
globeandmail.com ^ | July 19, 2007 | STEPHANIE NOLEN
JOHANNESBURG -- The official order of business yesterday was the introduction of The Elders: convened at the request of Nelson Mandela, a collection of former leaders that has begun to work together to advance the causes of peace and global justice.
Five Nobel Laureates and a handful of other eminences gathered on the stage in Johannesburg as Mr. Mandela announced that they would seek to fulfill the traditional role of elders in a village, providing wisdom and leadership and attempting to resolve conflicts, taking on everything from climate change to the fighting in Darfur.
But as the Elders sat in a row and spoke about their very serious work, a current - of irreverence, of resilience, of what looked very much like joy - kept bubbling up through the formality. And Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who chairs this elders' council, voiced the true theme of the gathering: "Goodness will prevail." ...-

It's going to take a 90-percent decrease in carbon emissions from developed fossil fuel guzzlers like the U.S. and a 50-percent decrease worldwide to get a handle on the problem, Gore said -- [can you say cave-man-Dave ?] changes that will take major leaps of political will far beyond what current politicians see as feasible. [such as Gore for President ?] That reduction, which would be mandated by a world-wide treaty [Maurice Strong's 'One World Governance' ?] , could happen through carbon taxes [there it is, TAXES], cap and trade [scam], technological innovations [he don't know of any, others might], and energy conservation and efficiency, he continued, as long as it is accompanied by a major grassroots public shift to sustain it at the level necessary. [who sets the level ? the UN ? as in Saddam's oil-for-food program level ?]
Many have claimed Maurice Strong to be the most dangerous man in the world --- may have been bumped by Uncle Albert.

China’s Loch Ness monster has been sighted. Or so Chinese state-run television says. Not just one, but more than a dozen huge creatures can be seen churning across Lake Kanasi in remote western China, leaving a foamy wake more like an enormous motorboat than a big fish.
A rare video filmed by a tourist at the lake in the Heavenly Mountains of the wild Xinjiang region, has reignited debate over the existence of an underwater creature that can compete with the Loch Ness monster in both mass and mystery.
The grainy film shows about 15 objects moving at high speed just beneath the surface of the lake and whipping the smooth blue water into a bubbling white frenzy. Chinese Central Television broadcast the video on its news channel, describing the footage shot by a passing tourist on July 5 as the clearest ever seen of a legendary beast that has been rumoured for centuries to live in the depths of Lake Kanasi....-

"A temporizer procrastinates. He forfeits the present. He moves elsewhere in time."
"To temporize not only means to wait out something, but to compromise, to parley, to delay taking a position; it means to waver, to adapt, to conform, to evade, to shift, to fudge, to trim. To temporize is what you do when you don’t want to act, or when you can’t act, or when you don’t know how to act, or when you are forced to act (or speak) in ways that are not your own; you become evasive, deceptive. You trim. A trimmer is a timeserver."

"For example, I hadn't really followed Sudanese current events closely since, oh, General Kitchener's victory at the Battle of Omdurman in 1898, but in 2003 a story from that benighted land happened to catch my eye. In the fall of that year mass hysteria apparently swept the capital city, Khartoum, after reports that foreigners were shaking hands with Sudanese men and causing their penises to disappear. One victim, a fabric merchant, told his story to the London Arabic newspaper Al-Quds Al-Arabi: a man from West Africa came into the shop and "shook the store owner's hand powerfully until the owner felt his penis melt into his body."
I know the feeling. The same thing happened to me after shaking hands with Senator Clinton."
British Columbia, west coast ports, scores of native bands and Super Dave Suzuki may well be SOL.
[Third-largest U.S. oil firm is willing to pay billions to pump Alberta crude to Gulf Coast refineries.] G&M
[The prospect of an expansion of the U.S. market for Canadian crude comes just a week after Chinese oil officials pulled the plug on their involvement in the Gateway pipeline project that would deliver oil sands crude to the West Coast for delivery to Asian markets.]
[Industry insiders have long acknowledged that the Gateway pipeline project faced huge hurdles, because Alberta producers have shown a clear preference for the U.S. market, and the route would have required right-of-way deals with scores of native bands.]
[U.S.-based energy economist James Williams said access to the Gulf Coast would help ensure robust markets for vastly expanded oil sands production, which could reach 3.5 million barrels a day by 2020.] G&M
3,500,000 bbl per day !! That is well into some Middle East counties territory.

Alberta Tar Sands alone possible production by 2020 --- 3.50 MBD
Although tar sands occur in more than 70 countries, the two largest are Canada and Venezuela, with the bulk being found in four different regions of Alberta, Canada: areas of Athabasca, Wabasha, Cold Lake and Peace River. The sum of these covers an area of nearly 77,000 km2. In fact, the reserve that is deemed to be technologically retrievable today is estimated at 280-300Gb (billion barrels).
This is larger than the Saudi Arabia oil reserves, which are estimated at 240Gb. The total reserves for Alberta, including oil not recoverable using current technology, are estimated at 1,700- 2,500Gb.
As the media would put it --- to make headlines;
"Alberta has as much as 2,500,000,000,000 barrels of oil. Two and a half Trillion !!"
Some other provinces have lots also ---- but just want to leave it undergound. To each his own.
A century ago, hay for the 'hay-burners' was a hot topic. 'Stop using it --- we will run out.'
Oil made hay more or less redundant as a major fuel. In this century, something new could do it to oil.
