The Black Rod;
In the middle of an election, the Winnipeg Free Press runs eight pages on the collapse of the Crocus Investment Fund--- without a single mention of how deeply the NDP government is enmeshed in the scandal.Posted by Kate at May 7, 2007 10:07 AMIf the intent was to defuse the Crocus Fund as an election issue, somebody miscalculated.
New details of the Crocus story reveal that the fund was in serious trouble much earlier than anyone knew before, that government officials were aware of it, and that the NDP government and Crocus engaged in a conspiracy of silence as Manitobans were being duped into putting their pension money into overvalued shares.
This only supplies more ammunition to calls for a public inquiry, if not a re-energized criminal investigation into fraud, conspiracy and cover-up involving government officials including Finance Minister Greg Selinger, Premier Gary Doer and Justice Minister Gord Macintosh.
That's not the story the FP wanted you to read.
[...]
The FP story focus is on the final months of 2004 before trading in Crocus shares was suspended. It's a tale bolstered by ignoring the facts of the Crocus scandal, many of which surfaced in a series of leaked government documents which, for reasons not explained, the Free Press refused to report on.
[...]
A glance at the Premier's Economic Advisory group uncovers a raft of labour reps, almost all of whom have connections to the Manitoba Federation of Labour, the sponsor of the Crocus Fund, not to mention Sherman Kreiner and Gary Doer's pal, Costas Ataliotis, who was apparently using Crocus "investments" to cover weekly payroll for his company Maple Leaf Distillers.
Because a Superfund might take a while, CFO Jane Hawkins had a meeting arranged with Industry Minister Jim Rondeau on Nov. 16, 2004, to go over details of another change in legislation, this to eliminate the "pacing" requirements that Crocus hated.
In layman's terms, these were the rules that forced Crocus to invest the lion's share of new shareholders' money in local firms. Scrapping them would allow Crocus to become a full Ponzi scheme, able to use all the new share sales revenue to pay off old shareholders who wanted to cash out.[...]
One thing is certain. You can't expect the Winnipeg Free Press to provide the answer.
After all, a newspaper that hides the fact that its co-owner, Bob Silver, is the co-chairman of the Premier's Economic Advisory Committee, and may know more about the Superfund and Crocus than he's revealed so far, has bigger secrets to conceal.

"Crocus engaged in a conspiracy of silence as Manitobans were being duped into putting their pension money into overvalued shares"
More Kleptocratic cronyism....a sure alarm of a democratic governing system in decline. We know ALL politicos are inclined to graft if given the proper level of unaccountability...we know that pseudo-socialist governing systems concentrate and consolodate political power that promotes an unaccoutablity which actualises graft/nepotism/cronyism...we have seen it where ever socialist regimes have unlimited access to public revenues...why in the hell do we keep changing the actors, leaving the system alone, and expect different results?
The Winnipeg Free Press refuses to go after the Dippers because the Editor in Chief and the publishers are very much left leaning politicos who like their paper RED!
Posted by: OMMAG at May 7, 2007 10:50 AMBTW: seeing the media-government-corporate patronage net being so tightly inbred in MB may be partly explained as the result of a few big fish in a small pond staking off the deep end for themselves...but it sure shows us how easily the ideals of responsible representaive democracy can be violated when opportunity to construct a Tammany Hall type of "boss" run network exists from weak public accountability.
Posted by: WL Mackenzie Redux at May 7, 2007 10:53 AMThe current Manitoba election campaign has to qualify as one of the dullest on record. The Crocus scandal could have been a wedge issue for Hugh McFayden but for whatever reason he has chosen to pretty much ignore it.
Although they can't analyze the Crocus Scandal if their lives depended on it, Saturday's Winnipeg Free Press may have had it right when analyzing Hughie's campaign strategy: because Doer is perceived as unbeatable, Hughie is saying and doing as little as possible to avoid offending anyone in the hope that when Doer retires he will then have a chance at winning the next election. Bizarre strategy, but the explanation seems to fit with what I'm seeing.
I often call the Tory leader Stu McFayden or Hugh Murray since he is such a carbon copy of the last person to have his job.
I'm predicting that the provincial Tories will actually lose a seat or two in this election, given their lacklustre, pathetic campaign. Why should voters support a party that doesn't seem to care if it wins or not? If the WFP is right about Hughie's strategy, it may ultimately backfire.
Posted by: Dennis at May 7, 2007 11:13 AMSo tell us Dennis ... what are you doing about it?
Good think I don't live in Manitoba. I'd have no one to vote for. I'd never vote for a jacka$$ who, pledges during an election campaign, to use taxpayers money to subsidize an nhl hockey team.
What a clown.

Maybe a letter to the editor might attract some attention. Not a bad idea.
Posted by: Dennis at May 7, 2007 1:08 PMJust fired off a letter to PC headquarters expressing my disgust over the hockey announcement.
I've also lost money in the Crocus boondoggle, not a great amount but it would have financed a few visits to my children, and am confounded by no mention being made during the campaign.
Been voting Conservative for close to 40 years and this is the first time I'm wondering why. However, I will vote--it's a responsibility I hold dear.
Wow it takes a blogger to reveal this level of corruption, and surprise, surprise the "news media" will not report it because the owners support the NDP.
Raises a few questions.
Where is the outrage from reporters that relevant news is being concealed from the electorate? Hmm could they also be NDP supporters he asks naively.
Why do "Labour funds" in Canada get a special deal that puts money into labour leaders hands and provides tax relief that the average mutual fund cannot?
Why do investors believe that a board of labour activists could provide a return on investment equivalent to professional investment funds?
When will the electorate wake up?

Do you have any options? At least here in Alberta there's the Alberta Alliance as an alternate right of centre vote.
Posted by: Reid at May 7, 2007 2:14 PMI think most Manitobans are not excited about their choices in this election. In my riding, we have a senior Doer cabinet minister running against two neophytes, one of whom is a senior citizen with delusions of grandeur and the other very young and with little or no experience in life. I despise the Dippers, but they have the only personally credible candidate in my riding.
Like Buglady, I will vote, because I feel this responsibility is important. I will be gravely tempted to write in the name of a former MLA from this riding, now long deceased.
On the larger scale, we have the spend-happy Dippers who are flinging money around like drunken sailors, (courtesy of federal equalization) and with as little to show for it. Then we have the Tories who are acting more like Dipper-lite and with a leader doesn`t seem to be able to generate any ideas. Finally, there are the Liberals, who actually have more new ideas than the others during this campaign, but can`t seem to capture the voters attention. Their leader is extremely bland, and their only other MLA comes across as somewhat of a prankster.
They say you get the political leaders you deserve. We Manitobans must have been very naughty these past four years.
Posted by: felis corpulentis at May 7, 2007 5:22 PMI'd say that McFayden's advisors are one sorry bunch!
Plenty of time to straighten them out after we get rid of the NDP!
Does everyone know we a re getting the largest TiPi in the The Pas courtesy of the NDP. What a joke. L
Posted by: Linda McAuley at May 7, 2007 7:13 PMOnly one thing should happen as a result of this election. The government should change hands. All 3 parties are useless so it doesn't matter who holds power, it can't be any worse. The NDP have broken election promise after promise. Health care is a shambles, infrastructure is deplorable, the provincial economy is in self-destruct mode and the NDP Party is irrefutably linked to the Crocus coverup. The voters of Manitoba should vote for change if for no other reason than to send a strong message that broken election promises and poor performance get you kicked out. If the NDP win this election, and they surely will, then the message is clear from voters. How sad is that?
Posted by: Ross at May 7, 2007 10:08 PMYeah, that tipi will certainly boost tourism to The Pas. It'll be like Disneyland North.
Funny thing is, Gary Doer is kinda making this easy by running on his record and not promising anything.
Yet Hugh McFayden is releasing puff policy after puff policy, and ignoring Doer altogether. Come on, Hugh, attack already. Let's hear about the Crocus scandal, the healthcare problems that you haven't come close to fixing, the crime in our streets, the unreasonable taxation levels, and our free-falling economic competitiveness. We're behind Saskatchewan and sinking, for gawd's sake.
Posted by: Yukon Gold at May 7, 2007 10:11 PMSo what is it with people in MB. Do they like the inbreeding of politicians, media and labor bosses (as opposed to working stiffs). Are they ok with this situation?
Seems the opposition is of low quality. Tough luck people.
What a disappointment. Is it to late to get Gary Filmon to run ? The NDP has ruined the province. What happened to the end of Hallway medicine ? Well they paid the unions more, lost nurses, and still have hallway medicine. Been to an ER lately in Manitoba ?Its a 8 hour weight if your lucky. But They are spending more on medicine as promised.
Sask economy is has now surpassed Manitoba's. Yes Gary Doer, I know they have oil. So does Manitoba, you also have hydro electric generator stations, money which doesn't count toward equalization formula. Roads and hiways are falling apart. Yet the NDP has found money for the "Asper human rights museum"
There's a good tourist attraction. " Hey kids, where do you want to go this summer, Royal Tyrrell or Asper human rights ?" Which one do you think is a tourist draw ? What about the children's human rights, the ones forced to go to this museum ? If the Aspers want a museum, let them pay for it. Time for the Aspers to get of the taxpayer teat.
The new staduim they want more taxpayer money. Hey Gary Doer ! fix the streets first !
The MTS Centre, another NDP plan to revitalize downtown. Did it work ? Ask A&B sound across the street if it helped their business, but you can't because they closed the store due to lack of business. There are always lots of people around the MTS centre, but sniffers and panhandlers dont buy CD's.
Crocus fund, How did the NDP let Kriemer and umlah wastefully spend investers money. They said they operated it with a hands off approach. new documents have shown they were very much hands on.
The only new building construction is Manitoba Hydro's building, Which none of the employees want to work at. They have to know commute to downtown instead of the suburbs. Now they have to pay for parking and hope that their cars aren't stolen when they are at work.
Now McFaden is announcing he'll bring back the Jets. You wonder why people are leaving Manitoba for Alberta, its not just for the jobs, its to escape the insanity.
Posted by: angrywest at May 7, 2007 11:18 PMThe NDP beat the Conservatives promising to end hallway medicine. At the time the health budget was $2Billion. Today hallway medicine and the health system from top to bottom is even worse than before and in a complete shambles. The province is suffering an acute doctor shortage and the health budget is an astounding $4Billion. Go ahead Manitobans, vote these fools back in again, as you will surely do. After that stop complaining about anything because you'll have gotten exactly the government you deserve.
