Melamine Contaminated Pig Feed

I'm not known as one who gets bent out of shape over isolated cases of corporate error, imaginary trace levels of pesticides or rare biological risks like BSE. But this is quite different. It's time to close the borders to Chinese food imports;

In California, state agriculture officials placed a hog farm under quarantine after melamine was found in pig urine there. Additional testing was under way to determine whether the chemical was present in the meat produced by American Hog Farm in Ceres since April 3, the state Department of Food and Agriculture said.

So far, melamine's been found in both wheat gluten and rice protein concentrate imported from China. Media reports from South Africa suggest a third pet food ingredient, corn gluten, used in that country also was contaminated with melamine. That tainted ingredient has not been found in the United States, the FDA said.

FDA investigators were awaiting visas that would allow them to visit the Chinese plants where the vegetable protein ingredients were produced.

"Melamine was found in all three of those — it would certainly lend credibility to the theory that it may be intentional. That will be one of the theories we will pursue when we get into the plants in China," Stephen Sundlof, the FDA's chief veterinarian, told reporters.

Chinese authorities have told the FDA that the wheat gluten was an industrial product not meant for pet food, Sundlof said. Still, melamine can skew test results to make a product appear more protein-rich than it really is, he added. That raises the possibility the contamination was deliberate.

Do it now.

Its time to send a message to the chinese that if they do not stop adding strong organic bases and other funky chemicals to the food products they export, then they should not be allowed to sell to us. If they continue, then it could only be a matter of time before people start getting sick from this contamination

Wonder if the Lefty component of the Bunny Hugger's Association is conflicted here? On the one hand, ya gotta defend The Revolution! On the other, the bunnies!!!!

Awwww, poor Lefties. Go color a shiny pony and you'll feel better.

But let's give communism another chance! You have to crack 150 million eggs to make a utopian omlette, you know.

If for some reason this is a deliberate act then all the western food inspectors in the, well west, won't find jack by the time they get an entry visa.
My suggestion would be to make the Chinese do the legwork and convince Western commerce that their product is safe.

This would entail the Chinese Producers/Gov't footing ALL costs and restitution to buyers/victims of this scenario and absorbing the cost of ongoing intensive inspections of their related products ON foreign soil "till such time as buyer confidence/supplier accountability has been established.

People/Business learn far quicker through their wallets and if the Chinese are not willing to back their product then they should be cut out of the business equation!

Why are we buying wheat/rice/corn gliten from China in the first place? This continent produces more than anybody else, and cheaper too.

Its a communist conspiracy to cause hog futures to rise on the Chicago exchange. (Tin foil hat on :) )

Pork belly futures rise dramatically!!

The marxists only have China and Cuba left.

The best chance to save the communist juggernaut that failed so spectacularly in mother Russia is to make sure the Chinese communist experiment doesn't fail. Doug correctly points out that with about 150 million deaths already this should be sufficient to describe human, moral and political failure.

Therefore, bad capitalists should feel bad about their evil carbon consumption so the communists in China that need to bootstrap over a billion people into capitalist economy have cheap oil.

Hence the great carbon credit scam, Socialism will prevail because capitalist consumption of oil is demonstrably evil.

Thus evil capitalists should be deprived of their pets and morning bacon because they are not fair to 'enlightened communists'.

exile - China is indeed capitalist but it is not yet operating as a democracy, ie, with a rule of law whose authorities are accountable. The rule of law remains totalitarian, ie, communist.

An unelected government or authority rapidly becomes corrupt, because it is unaccountable to anyone. Its members will attempt to obtain as much profit as they can for themselves. They'll do this in many ways. Substituting cheap and hazardous products and lack of expertise rather than using quality but expensive goods and services - is a basic tactic.

You'll find this in every country in the world, where the authority is not accountable. Check out the Walkerton water scandal; check out the bridge collapses in Quebec. And that's why we don't want to send our Kyoto dollars to China - who will use our money to build many cheap, polluting factories rather than a few, expensive, non-polluting ones.

China and other countries not operating with accountable authorities are therefore rife with corruption. If it happens in our country, then, try increasing our own ratio several hundred times - for China.

I've got some real bad news for you exile, you "non-capitalists" are going to hate the "new economy" that's being foisted on us even more than the old economy. The Kyotoites, Liberals, Suzuki/Goreites, EUites, Chicoms have a long list of very nasty surprises for you urban lefties. I think they'll class you as "unproductive urban consumer population" and target you for reduction.

It doesn't matter if China is communist or capitalist, they are sending their cr#p over here and we are feeding it to our pets. I agree with the poster who said that they should prove to our satisfaction that their products are safe before we import any more. I totally agree with a ban on Chinese food additives. Companies that produce pet food should use north american grains and advertise that they do so. I am horrified about the poison that is fed to our animals in a country with such abundance of food!!

Why close the border? Just let the free market take care of the problem.

Posted by: Ignoramous at April 20, 2007 1:16 PM

ign, canadians are too stupid to stop buying cheap stuff, no matter what the stuff is.

Posted by: jmorrison at April 20, 2007 2:01 PM

Does mo have any interest in the contaminated products. Is it a test to see how easy it would be to poison a large part of the population. Cheaper and easier than flying planes into buildings. These people know how stupid the west is in refusing to see any danger in those wonderful dictators or terrorists. Pull a pelosi and go talk to them nicely.

"FDA investigators were awaiting visas that would allow them to visit the Chinese plants where the vegetable protein ingredients were produced."

...meanwhile there's a major cleanup job going on at the plants as the paperwork stalls...

"who us?"

I don't live or work in an urban area. And I don't like the ideology of the Liberals, Suzuki, Gore, the EU, etc. any more than you do, though for very different reasons.

Reminds me of infamous Canadian 'approved ammunition list'. We cannot get just any ammunition, only that which has been tested ($10.000) and approved by the government. Of course, $10.000 bill has to be picked up by the importer. And this applies only to the legitimate gun owners - the criminals, who smuggle their guns and ammo in, do not concern themselves with government approvals.

ET: "China is indeed capitalist but it is not yet operating as a democracy, ie, with a rule of law whose authorities are accountable. The rule of law remains totalitarian, ie, communist."

No it's not a democracy, not even in the very limited sense of "democracy" as that term is understood here. And like any number of other capitalist countries, it is totalitarian and, yes, rife with corruption.

This stuff may have already hit the human food market, albeit in 'small' amounts, according to the following story.

"The FDA and Agriculture Department also were investigating whether some pet food made by one of the five companies supplied by Wilbur-Ellis was diverted for use as hog feed after it was found unsuitable for pet consumption.

“We understand it did make it into some hog feed and we are following up on that as well,” Sundlof said.

Officials were investigating American Hog Farm’s sales records to determine who may be affected by the quarantine, said Steve Lyle, a spokesman for the California Department of Food and Agriculture. The 1,500-animal farm operates as a “custom slaughterhouse,” which means it generally does not supply meat to commercial outlets.

“Mostly it is not so-called mainstream pork. This is an operation that sells to folks who come in and want a whole pig,” said Lyle said.

Officials urged those who purchased pigs from American Hog Farm since April 3 to not consume the product until further notice.

Dr. Mark Horton, state public health officer, said so far “evidence suggests a minimal health risk to persons who may have consumed pork” from the farm."

Go ahead and hit me with the "Conspiracy" bat...but i suspected all along that this was a ramp-up to contaminating the western food chain.

BTW...Monsanto's GM project is killing bees.

Most of the comments focus on the political issues of China and ignore the focus of the story; contaminated food. This is not the first time the Chinese have done this. They have sent honey tainted with chemicals not allowed in Canada. Using green wood in pallets allowed the importation of the emerald ash borer. This pest will probably kill all the ash trees in North America, where there are no natural predators to keep it in check. Come out to my farm and walk the bush to see my ash trees dying from this pest. There is lots of fault to go around and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency needs to put extra scrutiny on products imported from a nation with a proven record of shady dealings. Support Canadian farmers!

Posted by: Farmerboy at April 20, 2007 3:51 PM

I expected this and it will get a lot worse to come. China is hell bent on profits and with a corrupt government and foreigners desperate to make every buck possible in combination with the locals... there are NO CONTROLS.

I still think we are eating this stuff and it will be found in the human feedstock somewhere.

Posted by: Real Conservative at April 20, 2007 4:13 PM

I'm going to make a broader and bolder statement.

This is ONLY the tip of the iceberg!

ALL Chinese imports should be banned until full compliance with health and safety standards is proven for each and every product.
Any violations by ANY Chinese entity should result in Immediate removal of the product from our soil and a complete ban on further imports.

I would like to remind readers of the Mexican imports which contained contaminated metals and other materials in manufactured goods. Lead contaminated plastics and paints. Radiologically contaminated metal components in manufactures goods for just a couple.
The Chinese have been the source of insect and bio-hazard importations as well as toxic contaminants in manufactured goods as well as food. Not to mention a flood of illegally copied products and substandard parts and materials for manufactured goods made here.

I make it a point to avoid buying anything made in China, cuba, Sweden, etc. Usually try and buy made in Western Canada or USA. I like my money going to some money grubbing capitalist rather than a communist dictator. And I do not even think of anything French (which kinda sucks cause they own some good tire companies).

I try and do my own little bit to back up my convictions, I buy nothing with a made in china label. My personal boycott extends to quebec, but it sure is hard as hell to buy most dairy products, especially butter, without lining their pockets somewhere along the line.

Posted by: Western Canadian at April 21, 2007 8:31 AM

Why the hell don't we use a bit of common sense and STOP ALL imports from the PRC is the question.

This is serious stuff. First we're poisoning our beloved pets with contaminated ingredients from that screwed up place and now there's a good chance it has entered the human food chain.
Is this a true error or a calculated one? We really don't know at this point and we're bloody stunned to be importing any foodstuffs from that place.

Come on Conservatives, show some backbone and take action or join the Chinese Junket Patsies, we know who they are.

Posted by: Liz J at April 21, 2007 8:42 AM

OOPS! We could never stop all imports!!!! We'd be missing a few items. Meant to say food related imports.
