Mind-blowing markup for medicinal pot...http://www.thestar.com/News/article/203446

"Records obtained under the Access to Information Act show Health Canada pays $328.75 per kilogram of bulk medical marijuana produced by Prairie Plant Systems Inc. It has a $10.3-million contract with Health Canada that expires Sept. 30, to grow standardized medical marijuana in an abandoned mine shaft in Flin Flon, Man.

Health Canada, in turn, sells the pot to a small group of authorized users for $150 (plus GST) per 30-gram bag of ground-up flowering tops, with up to 14 per cent THC, the main active ingredient. That works out to $5,000 per kilo, a markup of more than 1,500 per cent.
"

Mind Blowing? Who makes up these headlines? Hehehe

KARACHI, April 15: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement on Sunday staged a massive rally in the city against what it called the threat of ‘Kalashnikov Sharia’ of Islamabad’s Lal Masjid clerics and asserted that Islam did not allow enforcement of Sharia by force and Pakistan had not been created to be turned into a theological state.

In a telephonic address from London, party chief Altaf Hussain quoted profusely from the Holy Quran and Hadith to substantiate his attack on religious extremism. He said that extremists were defaming Islam and maligning the name of Pakistan and because of their acts of violence and terrorism, India, Afghanistan and other countries were describing Pakistan as a sanctuary of terrorists. He described the scholars supporting the Sharia of Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa as “Ulema-i-Sou” and said they were misleading the country and the people. ...-

Another lie in the headlines, 15 years for Afgan mission. Yesterday, on QP, O'Connor said that Canada might be in the field for up to 15 yrs, Somalia, Darfur ect. He did not say we would be in Afgan for 15 years. He did state we are there till Feb 2009 only. Any extension would be decided by the Government, after discussion in the HofC.

mary T,
I heard those comments too by O’Conner on QP. But both on the radio today and in headlines, the media twists O’Conner as if he said 15 years in Afghanistan.

Our problem in the West is dealing with what Rummy said a couple of years ago; we don’t have metrics or measurements to offer the public as to whether or not we are winning the War or even battles.

Sending tanks to Afghanistan to protect our troops becomes “escalation” not peacekeeping as the NDP whined on QP. Peacekeeping is such a misnomer to begin with … if things are so peaceful why would we be there?

I sure hope in 2008 the US elects Fred Thompson or Rudy Giuliani who can articulate what we in the West are up against. As much as I admire Bush’s backbone on not cutting and running; it would be nice if the next President (leader of the free world) were able to give the West a fireside chat about Islamofascists and what it will take to win.

"Native embarrassed by actions"

Sachem
April 13, 2007

Let me start with Douglas Creek Estates. There’s no reason for the natives to be still occupying the disputed land. The land has been bought out by the provincial government.

What are we proving by occupying land that no developers can build on anyways? We got what we wanted; we stopped Henco Industries from building. What more do you want?

We call ourselves a sovereign nation, pure and respectful people but that’s far from the truth. I live with the so called sovereign nation. Alcohol , drugs, greed and jealously run rampant within this nation. I’m sick and tired of all the cigarette shop owners opening up in almost every other driveway. Do all these cigarette shop owners think about what they are making our reserve look like. This is where the greed and love of money come into play. What a disgrace!

I quit attending longhouse myself due to the unfaithful clan mothers, faith keepers and chiefs that ‘don’t practice what they preach.’ Mostly everyone attending bootlegs sells drugs or owns a cigarette shop. I’m almost ashamed to be a native.

Why are so many native people uneducated when we have our education paid for? Non-natives work tow or three jobs to pay for their education. If more natives attended post secondary school we could change our statistics on native unemployment and education.

Last but not least, we need to do some housecleaning with the police force. I have absolutely no respect for our peacekeepers. When you see them disrespecting themselves along with their integrity by being intoxicated among the general a public,(off-duty, of course), but also the other stories. How could anyone have respect for such a corrupt police force?

I am currently attending and obtaining my post-secondary education. I’m not into politics, so I can say whatever I please. It’s called freedom of Speech.

Heavy snow brings cancellations, frustration
Ottawa Citizen
Published: Monday, April 16, 2007

The massive storm that had been dumping heavy rain and floods on the U.S. brought several centimetres of snow to Ottawa early Monday, making a mess of the roads and cancelling some school buses.

...

In the U.S., the storm was called one of the nastiest spring nor’easters in years. It roared over the East Coast early Monday, bringing umbrella-breaking wind and relentless rain that forced evacuations from New Jersey to West Virginia.

Of course it is all my fault as I summoned this storm in the run up to Easter to prevent the "Goreacle" from preaching his nonsense. Lets keep the Goreacle's plane grounded.

...what we will get from this process of multiculturalism is precisely the kind of 'separate but equal' facilities struck down by the Supreme Court in Brown v Board of Education in 1954. These Muslim activists want to create a separate society within the United States for Muslims, and they want the US to provide them the facilities with which to create it. Separate dorms, separate cafeterias, Muslim-only physical-education classes -- they want a separate Muslim college at MCTC and everywhere else.

It's self-initiated apartheid.

Green Party talking points in the 2006 election:

Paraphrased by a university student who was involved in the party:

"If you HATE the government and HATE old style politics vote Green and skrew the government.

For every Green vote we get $1.75 to lobby the suckers. Your Green vote is a protest and they PAY us for it."

Sooooo, dear taxpaying friends - the suckers (that's US) PAID more than $1.4 million for the Green Party lobby protest group posing as a political party to skrew us.

Dear Elizabeth May is doing that quite nicely already don't you think.

In my opinion May is one of the most sinister kinds of lobbyists. She "feigns" tht she is some kind of country bumpkin political neophite all giggly and soooooo "sincere". Very Clinton-ish. Good old girl.

This "political neophyte" was born into an American Democrat family of political activists. She has been "lobbying" and politicizing all her life no matter what the cause. Clinton and Gore are "close" family friends. Her giggle girl persona is an act.

And this American poseur now wants to tell all of us rubes that our political system stinks and SHE wants to do things differently!!!!

If she really really wanted to enact change instead of just being one of a long long list of special interest and one trick pony lobbyists she would help support PM Harper with his attempts to reform goverment - one step at a time and in keeping with the constitution - not hurdling over it while WE pay for her to have a loud mouth and stamp her little foot demanding "entitlements" and for all to bow because she is "leader" of a rudderless vacant party of social misfits.

Pollsters have also commented that the percentages of people who say they will vote Green are basically anti-society protest voters who would choose "don't vote" or "none of the above" but the Green Party is about the same anti-government statement.

If one of those radical over the top rhetoric loony tunes, and I put May in that category, looked like they were going to end up being your MP I think people would be very very upset.

Garth Turner sat as an independant, Chuck Cadman sat as an independant, and there are others. Deb Grey was the lone Reform MP for a long time. How often did you see them ask a question in the HofC, or hear of any involvement on committees etc. So, if May ends up as a lone red/green MP, how often will she be heard or seen. Only in close votes of confidence do these lone MPs get any attention. Of course, electing her might be a good way of silencing her and seeing she is ignored. What does she really think she could do or influence in the HofC. She would have to cross and sit as a liberal to have any input, so why not be honest and tell the voters and her party members, I AM A LIBERAL IN HIDING & WAITING TO BE A MINISTER IN DION'S CABINET.
To sit as a green MP, she will have absolutely no power, or influence.

Gun bill gets shot down by panel
HB 1572, which would have allowed handguns on college campuses, died in subcommittee.

By Greg Esposito
381-1675

A bill that would have given college students and employees the right to carry handguns on campus died with nary a shot being fired in the General Assembly.

House Bill 1572 didn't get through the House Committee on Militia, Police and Public Safety. It died Monday in the subcommittee stage, the first of several hurdles bills must overcome before becoming laws.

The bill was proposed by Del. Todd Gilbert, R-Shenandoah County, on behalf of the Virginia Citizens Defense League. Gilbert was unavailable Monday and spokesman Gary Frink would not comment on the bill's defeat other than to say the issue was dead for this General Assembly session.

Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker was happy to hear the bill was defeated. "I'm sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly's actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus."

'O'Connor envisions conflicts lasting 15 years

BRIAN LAGHI

Globe and Mail Update

OTTAWA — Canada needed to acquire 120 new tanks to deal with another 10 to 15 years of conflicts in Afghanistan and other countries, Defence Minister Gordon O'Connor said Sunday, amid opposition concerns that the war is escalating.

“Afghanistan and these type of engagements are the future for 10, 15 years,” Mr. O'Connor told CTV's current affairs program Question Period.'

The underlying facts are buried very deep in the story:

'“When I talk about 10 or 15 years, I'm saying that's an assessment from defence and government that if we were to go to other ventures like Somalia, or, I don't know, Darfur or whatever,” the new tanks will be needed, he said.

He insisted he was not referring specifically to Afghanistan, saying “our commitment militarily is to the end of February '09,” and cabinet wasn't scheduled to discuss the matter until next year.'

That's not what the average reader would think from giving the story a quick glance. What gutter "journalism".

At military bases, the guard house is effective because people do not come and go en mass.

An electronic ankle bracelet for kids may work. Those entering the *scan zone* without one would be restricted to a visitor*s room with reception behind armor glass.

Harper urges Canadians to remember Holocaust victims

OTTAWA - Prime Minister Stephen Harper bore witness to the millions of Jews killed during the Holocaust in a memorial ceremony Sunday, vowing to oppose anyone who advocates the "destruction of Israel."

"It has been said that lies become truth if they are repeated often enough. That's why truth is so precious. That's why the truth must be repeated, over and over and over, to protect us from lies," Harper told a couple of hundred people gathered on Parliament Hill on Sunday to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day.

"So let us plainly state the awful, incontrovertible truth that brings us here today: Millions, including six million Jewish men, women, and children were murdered by the Nazis during the Holocaust." ...-

Thanks for posting that maz2. The more PMSH speaks on important matters such as this and at the Vimy memorial rededication, the more proud I am to have him as Canada's Prime Minister. On the international stage he conducts himself, on our behalf, in a dignified and stately manner. Something that's been sorely lacking in our last 2 Prime Ministers.

"About 20 minutes into the attack, civilians started to arrive with deer rifles. They helped police return fire."

The shots fired came from a lone gunman.

This happened before "Gun Free Zones".

The Tower Shooting - 40 Years Later ("armed citizens shot back with their deer rifles")

At about 11:45 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 1, 1966, it was hot on the University of Texas campus.

About 96 degrees.

But other than that, nothing seemed unusual about that summer school day to newly elected student body president Cliff Drummond.

And then, shots broke the morning calm.

"As I was walking toward the Tower on the West Mall, I was hearing the reports of the rifle, but it was not clicking [in my head] what was going on," Drummond said.

Gunfire on a college campus? It didn't make sense. It didn't seem possible.

"There were some students along the south wall of the Texas Union Building and they were all standing hunkered down, next to the wall. And they were shouting at me," Drummond said.

KTBC reporter Neal Spelce was about to be involved in the biggest story of his career. At first it wasn’t obvious to police, bystanders or the media if there was more than one person shooting from the Tower.

"Nothing like this had ever occurred anywhere before! This wasn't an event where you said, ‘Oh, this is just like so and so’ therefore you had a frame of reference. Everything was unfolding, new and fresh at the time amidst chaos, bullets, sirens, screaming, shots fired, people yelling. You were seeing people screaming, dodging and diving and hiding," Spelce said.

The only clear thing was that whoever was shooting from up there was an incredible shot.

The first victim from the Tower was the fetus of an 18-year-old pregnant student named Claire Wilson. ...-

"But the Martin cabinet authorized the redeployment, and one of the ministers voting in favour of it was Stephane Dion."

...-

Why is Canada in Afghanistan? Because we're not in Iraq.

That's the short answer. Canada played a minor role in the eviction of the Taliban and Al-Qa'ida in the fall of 2001, and deployed a few hundred soldiers in 2002.

It was only when Canada declined to join the U.S.-led coalition in the invasion of Iraq in March 2003 that the Chretien government suddenly announced Canada would be stepping up its commitment in Afghanistan to 2,000 troops, based in the capital of Kabul.

As Brian Stewart's CBC documentary made clear last week, this commitment by the civilian leadership was several times the troop strength recommended by the military command at the time. The mission was clearly politically motivated, so that the Chretien government could say to the Americans that Canada was doing its part in the war on terror, in a different theatre, one approved by NATO and the UN.

It was only in the spring and summer of 2005 that the Martin government took the decision to redeploy Canadian troops from the relative safety of Kabul to an offensive role in the disputed and dangerous Kandahar province in the south. It was well known in military circles at the time that the new chief of defence staff, Rick Hillier, a former field commander in Afghanistan, lobbied hard for the redeployment.

But in the summer of 2005, no one in the government, other than then Defence Minister Bill Graham, bothered to warn Canadians of the increased risk. While it was obvious that confronting an insurgency in the countryside was different from patrolling the streets of the capital, the then prime minister was nowhere to be seen or heard on the subject. Hillier was sent out as the government's public-relations surrogate, a political role he had no business playing but a political vacuum he filled quite capably.

But the Martin cabinet authorized the redeployment, and one of the ministers voting in favour of it was Stephane Dion....-

Well who ever is acting as "ED" today is terribly afraid of a bit of criticism of SDA along with it's support of racist comments found on SDA. I notice criticisms of Iraq, or Harper and the Conservatives are often frequently deleted here too.
Controlling free speech and opposing viewpoints is a very cowardly tactic too often used by right-wing fascists the world over.
That's quite all right as I take screenshots of my comments on SDA and will post them on another web site to show how right-wing fanatics handle opposing viewpoints.
ED, better delete all the posts that commented earlier on my deleted posts because if you don’t people here will see that you’re controlling of the information of what they are allowed to see.

Did I read somewhere that Dion called the actions of our brave troops in Afghanistan as "incompetent"?

Can someone point out where he said this???

Also, we visited friends on the army base near Edmonton this weekend. It was very telling about how they feel about Jack Layton and the NDP's woosy hippy unrealistic and downright disgusting attitudes about our role with NATO in helping the Ghani people.

They had a blow up picture of DAWN BLACK, NDP Defence hippy peacenik whiner on their dart board!

Nuff said about how the military families feel about the NDP so called speaking up for THEM. In their opinion the Taliban TARGET Canadians so they can get good woosy NDP snivelling with the help of the CBC to back off their good work.

In fact, some military families will openly say that Jack Layton and some of the CBC type reporters have CAUSED our military deaths.

For the Taliban - Kill a Canadian soldier - you get a bigger bang for your bomb right here at home.

Now Layton wants an emergency debate - 8 lives lost and nice big NDP political games headlines.

The Taliban and Al Queda must be just so happy with Jack and his band of wimps.

And now Dion calls our soldiers incompetent???

Sickening isn't it?

Appeasement is pure folly

Conflict never tamed by tolerance
By PAUL JACKSON

A remarkable document came into my hands the other day from a Republican friend in Washington and it is something that should be read by all patriotic Americans and Canadians.

It should also be read by lib-lefters, appeasers, sell-out artists and cowards in all western democracies who want the U.S. and Britain to pull out of Iraq, and the U.S., Britain and Canada to pull out of Afghanistan, and the West to just give in to the demands of fanatics such as Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and North Korea's Kim Jong Il.

It's entitled Europe -- Your Name is Cowardice and was written, strangely, by a German, Mathias Dapfner, CEO of the huge publishing house Axel Springer (AG) and published in Germany's largest newspaper Die Welt.

As most know, Germany, like France, has been one of the great nations of appeasement against Islamic terrorism.

Not so Dapfner. He noted a week or so ago, commentator Henry Broder wrote in the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag an article entitled Europe -- your family name is appeasement.

It's a phrase, says Dapfner, one can't get out of one's mind.

"Appeasement cost millions of Jews and non-Jews their lives, as England and France, allies at the time, negotiated and hesitated too long before they noticed Adolf Hitler had to be fought, not bound to toothless agreements." ...-

"our results find that the only policy factor to influence multiple victim public shootings is the passage of concealed handgun laws."

Scholarly Article: "Multiple Victim Public Shootings..."
Social Science Research Network ^ | John Lott and William Landes

Few events obtain the same instant worldwide news coverage as multiple victim public shootings. These crimes allow us to study the alternative methods used to kill a large number of people (e.g., shootings versus bombings), marginal deterrence and the severity of the crime, substitutability of penalties, private versus public methods of deterrence and incapacitation, and whether attacks produce copycats. Yet, economists have not studied this phenomenon. Our results are surprising and dramatic. While arrest or conviction rates and the death penalty reduce normal murder rates, our results find that the only policy factor to influence multiple victim public shootings is the passage of concealed handgun laws. We explain why public shootings are more sensitive than other violent crimes to concealed handguns, why the laws reduce both the number of shootings as well as their severity, and why other penalties like executions have differential deterrent effects depending upon the type of murder. ...-

Facts About Plug-in Vehicles

Battery Electric Vehicles (EVs) are by far the most efficient vehicles in the world.

According to the Department of Energy, enough excess generating capacity exists at night in the U.S. to charge 180 million EVs without adding any new capacity.

All of our electricity is domestic except for a small percentage from Canada.

Most Americans waste more electricity in their homes than they would use to drive their cars.

We will never fight a war over electricity.

Driving on electricity from the U.S. grid is far cleaner than driving on oil.

A survey of EV owners found that 48% of them used solar energy to power their houses and cars.

EVs by the millions could be built today.

Plug-in cars capable of 50 miles per day would meet the needs of 80% of the American driving public. Source: U.S. Department of Transportation.

Interested in attending a $225 per ticket fundraising reception featuring federal Liberal leader Stephane Dion and Surrey candidates Sukh Dhaliwal, Judy Higginbotham and Brenda Locke tomorrow evening? (Sat. April 14th)

Well, not enough party members were. Because the fundraiser, scheduled to take place at the Coyoto Creek Golfcourse, has been cancelled.

Organizers made a push to sell more tickets on Thursday. But, by Friday, it had become apparent attendance at the event would be a bit lacking - which may have had something to do with the fact former party leadership candidate Ken Dryden had a fundraiser for Ms. Locke at the exact same location Thursday evening.

So Mr. Dion's Coyote Creek soiree has been rescheduled - at the request of the Surrey constituency associations - for the next time the leader visits British Columbia. .

Extremists in our midst

The Ottawa Citizen

Tuesday, April 17, 2007

Many Canadians have always assumed that political extremism, insofar as it exists in this largely centrist country, resides on the political right. That's a wrong assumption. The Canadian left is just as likely -- even more so -- to be infiltrated by radicals who promote intolerance, hate and even violence.

The case of Kevin Potvin is instructive. Mr. Potvin had planned to represent the Green party in the next federal election, in the riding of Vancouver-Kingsway. His ambitions for higher office, however, were interrupted last week when it emerged that he once described the 9/11 attacks as "beautiful." Not only, by his own admission, did he thrill at the sight of the twin towers coming down, but when the Pentagon was attacked he "felt an urge to pump my fist in the air."

Twenty years ago when the Reform party was established as a new voice in Canadian conservatism, founder Preston Manning knew that people would try to discredit the new entity as a collection of right- wing crazies. For years he fought to keep out any would-be members who harboured fascist or racist tendencies -- and he did. Yet to this day, conservatives associated with Reform, including Prime Minister Stephen Harper, all of whom are perfectly mainstream in their thinking, have to fight off accusations that they have "secret" right-wing agendas.

It's time to ask what secret agendas exist on the left. Green party leader Elizabeth May is no doubt repulsed by Mr. Potvin's views on 9/11, but how many others in her party are sympathetic to Mr. Potvin's crazed anti-Americanism? And what about that demonstration in Montreal some months ago in which members representing the left wing of the Liberal party marched alongside people with Hezbollah flags?

Political extremism, clearly, is an equal opportunity phenomenon. ...-

Zaccardelli admits cancelling criminal probe of pension fund

OTTAWA — Former RCMP commissioner Giuliano Zaccardelli admitted yesterday that he "cancelled" a criminal investigation into irregularities in the administration of the Mountie pension fund in 2003.

"When I heard that somebody was trying to have a criminal investigation, it was inappropriate at that time and that's why I cancelled it," Mr. Zaccardelli told reporters after a heated session of the House public accounts committee in which three witnesses contradicted various aspects of the former commissioner's testimony.

At one point during the hearing, former staff-sergeant Ron Lewis, the Mountie who initiated the criminal investigation, turned to Mr. Zaccardelli and said: "He's telling lies. I'm sick of him, and he's doing it under oath."...-

BryanR, Dion made "incompetent" comments when he was arguing for pullout of Cdn troop from Afghan in 2009. Of course, he said the government was getting "bogged down" with incompetent operation, not to be confused with not supporting the troops.

Who does Dion think is planning and fighting the mission on a tactical level, every day? He would have us believe troops are doing a great job, but somewhere along the line, the mission is being run incompetently. As usual, no specifics, just vague emotive terms.

This from a man who wouldn't know the difference between a military campaign and a sociology lecture. Has he bothered to go to Afghanistan, to talk to those he "supports," who are incompetent?

No, he sits in his comfortable armchair, with Coderre (another with zero military expertise) as defence critic, talking about "escalation," of war declared on us, never giving a single constructive idea (how could he?). We're supposed to believe he will save us all the minute Harper is gone as PM.

As one earlier poster said, if Harper such a disaster for environment and military, why not force election today?

Why not - because he wants it both ways - he wants to tell us Harper imminent disaster, with him as saviour, with no new ideas at all, just complaints about being out of power.

Noticed in media Tories set to snooker the Red Green party on environment. Oh yeah, I forgot, Harper is incompetent.
