If you've never been through a real middle-eastern market before, you've missed a wonder. Especially for those of us accustomed to shopping in strict rectilinear grids laid out according to the results of exhaustive market research. To add strangeness to the western mind, similar vendors are set alongside each other in Kurdistan, so competitors see each other. We normally avoid putting two grocers side by side, but here you have six or twelve all calling out for your business. Loudly. In photo and video. Posted by Kate at April 14, 2007 6:57 PM

Well, I've experienced the souks in the arab part of old Jerusalem....many years ago, when a couple of us were staying in a hostel in the christian sector of old Jerusalem. Also found lots of the same in other parts of Israel, but the arab sector souk was the most raucous, it seems. I recall rounding a corner in the winding maze of the old city, and coming upon an old Arab smoking from a hookah. He said it was "tabac".....I don't know.......his eyes were really really red.

Posted by: Len Pryor at April 14, 2007 9:51 PMKate,
sorry for the OT (great post btw), but this is very interesting. I took a gander at the Liberal constitution, and Dion appears to have violated it.
The relevant portions:
"2 Purposes
(1) The fundamental purposes of the Party are:
(a) to participate in the public affairs of Canada by endorsing members of the Party as candidates of the Party for election to the House of Commons and supporting their election;
10 Rights of members
(3) Subject to Chapter 12, a member of the Party has the right to seek to be a candidate of the Party for election to the House of
Commons.
Chapter 15 – Candidate selection meetings
58 Purpose
Each EDA must hold a candidate selection meeting to select a candidate of the Party for election to the House of Commons at the time specified by, and in accordance with, the rules made by the National Election Readiness Committee under Section 60."
- Purpose of the party is to endorse party members as candidates: violation (that's a biggie as it goes to the root of the party, which is obviously not to elect other party members),
- Each member has a right to seek to be a member: violation, in the NS riding EVERYONE is prohibited
- Each riding MUST select a candidate to run for parliament: violation.
Dion is explicitly violating his own party's constitution.

This should come as no surprise. This, the party that played fast and loose, with canadian taxpayers money as if it were their own fun money account. Hardly something to raise an eybrow.
The entitled did as THEY saw the world unfolding, for theirown benefit. Seems natural..to them.

Posted by: albatros39a at April 15, 2007 12:42 AMThe suqs of Yeruselum are interesting , all vendors equally annoying but the Arab section seem more confusing and less order if that word is even to be used.
but for all round riotness the Khan el Khalili in Cairo, a half section of cacophony and colour.and despite that, a WASP male stands out like a beacon.
Posted by: cal2 at April 15, 2007 10:29 AMEvents in post invasion Iraq have been the best kept North American MSM secrets of the century.
If you go by the MSM you will have no viable infomation to form an opinion one way or the other.....I often go into fits ow awe over the noisy one sided debate the North American left carries on over Iraq....all for a position of uninformed opinion.
Due to this big gap in my Iraq education I usually do not engage in discussion on the matter because I haven;t the information to offer a factual strong opinion...but my liberal friends proceed anyway...never let lack of facts and info spoil an opportuunity to create reality...or take a shot at the US.
When I see reporting on the net like "limited risk" and "Mike Totten" I realsize how grossly misinformed we are here and how desparately depraved our media are in offering opinion as fact and filtering first hand reporting out of their end product.

I would like to take a moment to explain a controversial comment I made on my blog regarding Canadians. I was tired and grumpy after a month on the road, woke up too early and read an unhelpful comment on my Souk post. If I had stopped and had some orange juice I would have probably not responded to the irritating commenter by fixing on his nationality. God knows we have irritating commenters in the US who spend extra time and effort making sure that the Canadians never have the upper hand in any "most annoying" contest.
I have been recalled to my home in Oregon by Mrs. Risk, the Risk Moderator for attitude re-adjustment therapy. After an night in my own bed with my dog at my feet and my wife at my side, a cup of coffee made with freshly ground beans, and other valuable theraputic measures, my attitude has improved considerably.
Thank you, Kate, for linking me regardless of my more ascerbic moments.
