Y2Kyoto: "Climate change ... not just a political issue"

From a Government of Saskatchewan press release that quotes Premier Lorne Calvert.

“I am very pleased that former vice-president Gore is coming to Saskatchewan the day after Earth Day,”

(In a nod to famed prairie populist Tommy Douglas, April 23rd is also known as the "day after Lenin's birthday").

“Throughout his career he has championed the environment. Al Gore has always been a person ahead of his time and Saskatchewan is honoured to welcome a leader of such stature and accomplishment to our province to discuss the climate crisis we are facing.” [...]

“As the former vice-president said as he accepted his Academy Award, climate change is moral issue, not just a political issue,” Calvert added.

And all this time we thought it was a scientific issue!

Big Al's fee is a cool $125K US. The major sponsor? SaskTel. Costs for the venue and advertising will bring the total to around $200K - a "break even" prospect only if all tickets sell.

Which makes the announcement by the premier a little odd - as a crown, the day-to-day operations of SaskTel are supposedly out of scope of politicians.

Of course, it helps if another member of the Saskatchewan Family Of Crown Corporations helps prop up ticket sales;

SaskEnergy is sponsoring 250 tickets enabling Saskatchewan high school and university students to attend as part of their ongoing commitment to supporting environmental education. Teachers interested in sending a team from their school can find registration information online at SaskEnergy’s web site at http://www.saskenergy.com/. All participating student teams will receive a complimentary DVD copy of “An Inconvenient Truth” so they can organize an educational event in their school or community.

That had to hurt. SaskPower is the nation's number three C02 emitter.

This won't be Gore's first Canadian appearance. At Concordia...

The former U.S. vice-president's speech was effectively his Academy Award-winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth with updated statistics, and presented by an angrier, fist-shaking Gore.

His presentation was halted at least twice as opponents to his agenda began to shout out.

They called him a liar and a villain, and screamed, "What about your swimming pools?" in regards to recent allegations that the monthly electricity bill of Gore's estate rivalled a year's bill for the average American home.

But, none of that interests me a whole lot.

What really interests me is knowing whether Mr. Gore is flying into Regina on the pride of the Air Canada Jazz fleet.

Because when it comes to carbon footprints - size matters!

So here's the deal: I have $50 for the best original, unretouched photo of Al Gore's plane at Regina airport.

$25 if you can catch him near a limo.

Travellers Advisory: Environment Canada has issued a travel advisory, as the well documented Gore Effect has the potential to push unseasonably cold temperatures the province is currently experiencing to dangeorus lows.

Motorists planning to travel to the event are urged to have an emergency survival kit on board.

Awesome and appreciated.

He's here in Calgary on the 23rd. I will not go to the show unless I can win a pair of ducats on QR.

In that case I shall act accordingly. Fingers crossed.

The Great Global Warming Swindle

This is an hour long show but very interesting as we listen to politicians who want to spend money and disrupt economies in order to reduce man-made CO2 emissions. I am sure it will resonate with most SDA readers.

Just when one thinks the Gore/Suzuki side show could not get any crazier, ... it does.

Suzuki says the world will end in 10 years !!!?? .... unless, of course, we repent.

I am afraid science will now be held in less esteem than even economics. For at least a generation.

Good on the boo-ers at Concordia. Even in the heart of so-called Kyoto land, they can see through the Kyoto hoax.

The "Goracle" is coming to Saska"Bush"!!

Pack up your children the North and South Saskatchewan are gonna be flooding for sure.

A little late Al, I did my contribution to Saskatchewan on the Nipawin Hydroelectric dam.
GREEN CLEAN POWER with no greenhouse gases.

My father was project manager back in the 80s bringing the fabled Paul Martin 'highwater' to the Prairies.

Who needs tsunamis when a hydroelectric dam will do. Highwater indeed!

Oh HELL, the sky is falling! the sky is falling! the "Goracle" said so.

Brought to you in federal sponsorship program dollars, by Chicken Little and Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Gee if the guy would turn off his pool heater, I wouldn't need my WWI Vimy Ridge special, chlorine gas mask!

I dub thee Knight of the Royal Order of Hypocrites

Oh yea that I walk through the valley of Green House Gases.

I shall fear no one, for thy Vimy Ridge gas mask comforts me.

I shall lay down beside the still waters of Nipawin Hydroelectric for thy rod provides many fishes.

I shall look upon the verdant plain of wheat fields, whose Canadian Wheat Board obstructs my fortune, and say "Barley is upon me".

Your rail cars sit idle, for what does it profit a farmer to plant his grain and lose his soul?

And the Land of Many Nations shall load up their muskets and march along the Sioux, Cheyenne, Assiniboine, Cree, and Blackfoot to drive the scurrilous Yankee dogs from the land.

In the name of God, I shall summon a mighty NORTH WIND from the wilds of Hans Island, that no plane shall land. THE "HUNS" OF CANADA shall give you no quarter and the carbon credit fraudsters shall find no respite in the TRUE NORTH STRONG AND FREE.

I had to laugh at Lynwood Barkway who was on the Michael Coren show this week and still held on the the Global Warming Charade and infered the GWSwindle from the UK was a big lie and the debate is over , Barkley defended his stance with the obsurd claim that anyone can gather a group of Climate experts that agree with their view just to produce a documentary as if it was factual.

YES Lynwood......that's exactly the problem , Al Gore has pulled a "Michael Moore" scam by piecing together little bits of Truths in a way that creates the outcome he wants to push on the world.
Plus, when Coren mention about having Dr.Ball and others do a show on Global warming , Lynwood laughed off Mr.Ball as if he was a kook and Climate change denier.

Lynwood professes to be a Journalist , but keep in mind his vast pool of wisdom is printed in the Red-Toronto Star which still reports about a Harper Hidden-Agenda , plus the Star now reports Maher Arar as completely innocent and the USA has no evidence against him.
But how quickly the US Dems turned against Arar this week, check out this article about Pelosie going to Syria to make peace and help dispell the myth of how bad Syria is with all those allegations of torture that people like Arar fabricate.
http://www.islamic-world.net/read.php?ArtID=9877

Bet you she doesn't even mention Maher Arar or the 3 other Canadians that alleged Torture.
Arar got $10 million from canada so why rock the boat now with a 2008 Election coming up.

Economy of [ Hybrid] Scale..

The world*s 3 biggest are getting to one standard for drop in modules. A Japanese idea?

I don*t like all eggs in one basket. Isn*t that what flattened Russia?

Global Hybrid Cooperation
General Motors, DaimlerChrysler and the BMW Group have formed a cooperative effort called the Global Hybrid Cooperation, which is actively developing this next generation hybrid powertrain system.

In an alliance of equals, all three partners are pooling expertise and resources to jointly and efficiently develop hybrid technology. Each company will individually integrate the full hybrid system into the design and manufacturing of vehicles in accordance with their brand specific requirements.

In Troy, Mich., the *GM, DaimlerChrysler and BMW Hybrid Development Center* houses together engineers and specialists from all three companies to develop the complete hybrid system and the individual components —

electric motors, high-performance electronics, wiring, energy management, and hybrid system control units. In addition, the *GM, DaimlerChrysler and BMW Hybrid Development Center* will be responsible for system integration and project management. =========== Chry/Daimler

The plot is to sell engines in hybrids and stave off pure EVs as long as posssible.

-As a decorative coaster
-As an attachment for a wind chime
-As a target for sighting in your rifle or for skeet shooting
-As a frisbee
-As something to give to your worst enemy
-As something to send back to Gore with a nasty note

Gorebot is the biggest hypocrite this side of parliament and congress.

If this is how they spend our transfer money, time to stop it all. If Gore was so sure of his message, why doesn't he do it for free. What does Suzuki get for an appearance. Finally the truth is out, they are just greedy capitalists who have found a way to steal from the people.

To believe global warming isn't man made is one thing, but to suggest that it doesn't exist at all buy putting up a five day weather forecast for one city, shows a deep ignorance of the problem we are facing.
It's not surprising that those who make the most money from emitting carbon in this country also happen to be the same ones showing the greatest degree of denial about man made global warming. Let us not forget that Alberta and Saskatchewan will likely pay the biggest price of all Canadian provinces because of an excess of CO2 in the atmosphere.

Really, I wonder why that would be? When someone makes a specious claim that your industry is destroying the planet, most people would naturally roll over and shut their doors, right? After all, the science is proven, and not based on computer models that use hundreds of hand-inputed variables, right?

Besides, how much money has Gore made out of this issue? Both sides, I mean.

Come on, albatros39a, that was the easiest knockdown I've had to hand out in the World Warming War. You can do better.

What, with his own carbon trading conglomorate, a hit movie, rock concerts and an endless speaking tour at $125k a speech, Al Gore is richer than ever. Scientists are flocking to it for grants, etc. And here come the entrepreneurs.

C'mon Kingstonlad, get real. Here is proof of climate change:

Summer is coming

Climate change is responsible for:

- the seasons
- cold weather
- warm weather
- earthquakes
- backed-up plumbing
- longer seasons
- shorter seasons
- Leafs not making the playoffs
- Harper being a big, fat meanie
- Oilers not making the playoffs
- air pollution
- malaria
- killer bees
- Jean Lafleur returning to Canada
- Dionsky having to go negative (from day one)
- Holland reading confidential personal files
- and anything else anyone can think of

Does that clear it up. Hope it didn't "heat" up the debate.

Posted by: Shamrock at April 5, 2007 3:14 PM

Gee - when I was a kid "climate change" was called "the weather".

And a bunch of scientists were trying to scare us into believing there was another Ice Age coming (wonder what caused the other 3 or 4 before man was around).

Then weather became "global warming" until about 4 years ago when the inconvenient truth was that the earth was no longer "warming".

So then the one world government eco-Gods changed the slogan from "global warming" to "climate change".

And, in my opinion, it is STILL just the weather.

Always changing-ever changing- part of living on an evolving planet- and mankind has survived thousands of years by adapting to the changing weather patterns- NOT trying feebly to blame everybody but mother nature for personal power and gain.

Reminds me of the Incas who could predict an eclipse so they ruled the people by threatening to "make the sun go away" and then VOILA on schedule the sun would go away and the people bowed down to the despots.

So Gore and Strong and the boys have said "If you don't give us a bunch of money we're going to make the weather change and VOILA - as in centuries past there are storms or droughts or heavy rainfalls so we too will bow to the Eco-despots.

Posted by: Lorraine at April 5, 2007 3:20 PM

The first time Gore gets up and begins a presentation with:
"I make 20-30 million dollars a year from my Global warming Enterprises"

And that's why it's called GLOBAL warming, not WINNIPEG warming. The globe's average temperature rises, and the climate gets more extreme and further from what is ideal for human life. It's not really hard to understand, and the meanings are built right into the two word phrases.

The world is now taking the problem of man-made global warming seriously, even Australia, who neither signed nor ratified Kyoto. But is seems Albertans, Saskatchewanians and many in the US are confused on whether to stick their fingers firmly in their ears, or cover their eye to hide the facts of global warming from themselves. The reality of it all for Alberta and Saskatchewan is that they have two choices. Wean off that oil-sand teat and get on with something else, or let global warming destroy your provinces economies.

"So then the one world government eco-Gods changed the slogan from "global warming" to "climate change"."

Wrong!
The term "climate change" was popularized by Frank Luntz, who advised the Bush administration that they should use that term rather than "global warming," because “climate change” sounded less scary and less urgent.

http://www.desmogblog.com/node/170

“The phrase "global warming" should be abandoned in favour of "climate change", Mr Luntz says, and the party should describe its policies as "conservationist" instead of "environmentalist", because "most people" think environmentalists are "extremists" who indulge in "some pretty bizarre behaviour... that turns off many voters". “

"The world is now taking the problem of man-made global warming seriously".

Seeing as there is no such thing as man-made global warming, that is quite a worrying statement. Watch the Great Global Warming Swindle and please learn some facts.

The Earth has warmed and cooled in the past without any input from humans or industrialization. Carbon dioxide does not cause global warming - it is an effect of global warming, released by the oceans as they gradually warm.

The best models for understanding the current warming trends involve sun activity.

It is irresponsible of you (like Al Gore) to spread these lies - are you also making money from the Great Swindle?

Never mind what the peer-reviewing scientists on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change say. friendsofscience.org seems to confuse science and politics, and they seem to be succeeding in convincing people that their is significant debate about global warming within the scientific community. Canadians conserve while Gore vents.

Conservation reduces power demand: Study

Utilities say programs save enough electricity to take 34,000 homes off grid.

by Tyler Hamilton, Toronto Star, April 4, 2007

Six of Ontario's largest electric utilities say conservation programs saved enough power last year to take nearly 34,000 homes off the grid.

The utilities – Toronto Hydro, Hydro Ottawa, Horizon Utilities, Veridian Connections, PowerStream and Enersource Hydro Mississauga – represent 1.7 million customers in southern and eastern Ontario.

According to a conservation progress report released yesterday, the utilities collectively reduced power consumption by 302.5 million kilowatt-hours in 2006, a 274 per cent increase over savings achieved in 2005.

Over the past two years, the group has invested $62 million in conservation and demand-management programs, including the "Fridge & Freezer Bounty" developed by Hydro Ottawa and Toronto Hydro's "Summer Challenge" rebate program and "Peaksaver" air-conditioner return program for residential and business customers.

Last year saw more than 8,000 old fridges and freezers unplugged, 12,671 energy-hogging air conditioners retired, and nearly 79,000 incandescent Christmas light strings replaced with energy-efficient LED lights.

Customers of the big-six utilities also obtained about 1.5 million compact fluorescent light bulbs through various coupon and promotion programs.

As evidence, they reference melting ice caps Mars. Solar system warming advocates I guess. 2) There are those who don't believe the planet is warming because of the weather today, or this week etc. 3) A vast majority speak with malice aforethought, showing little respect for anyone with an opposing view, snidely eschewing comtempt, replete with self congradulations and bravado. Where's human respect? It's disintegrating. 4) Someone needs to tell y'all that being an asshole doesn't make you funny. It makes you an asshole.

Posted by: albatros39a at April 5, 2007 11:36 PM

Albatros39. Maybe we are warming the planet. Even if we are, running around and scaring the s**t out of kids, with exaggerated claims (20' rise in sea level-Gore), aren't going to solve a thing.

We can stop using carbon fuels if we are willing to commit to a program like NASA used to put two men on moon. You must put your best minds and effort into this.

We cannot and will not if we are harpooned by the UN bureaucratic fantasy of Kyoto. The First World are the only ones who will develop this new technology.

The Third World wants the cheapest and most effective power (and more "power" to them). They will get power through coal and oil, until something better comes along.

Carbon taxes, offsets, credits are totally unnecessary if we develop new clean energy technology and share it with developing world. That way we can avoid environmental catastrophe in China and Asia, something which Kyoto will do nothing to prevent. And guess what, we reduce CO2 too!!! The human portion, that is.

We have the macro technology now; yes, it is nuclear and the enviro movement will have to accept this. They should know that it is safe, clean, plus waste is not issue it once was (in fact Candu reactor uses spent fuel rods).

Then, we have to develop the micro technology to replace oil and coal. We don't know what it is yet; on the other hand, the scientists at NASA had no idea how to put a man on the moon in 1963.

Leaving thus stuff in the hands of wackos like Gore and the Strong bureaukleptocracy in the UN is environmental and economic suicide.

Kyoto is not the way.

Posted by: Shamrock at April 5, 2007 11:45 PM

Credible ?? Gore says sea will rise 26 feet. Even the wakos at the UN only claim one foot in the next 100 years. That's credibility ??

Suzuki says Cuban farmers have it all over Canadian farmers. That's credibilty ??

In Montreal Suzuki said the world may end in 10 years. That's credibility ??

------------------------------------------

Tim Ball studied the hundreds of years worth of The Hudson Bay Company's climate records. THAT is KNOWLEDGE AND CREDIBILITY.

Patrick Moore helped in lifting the stupid DDT ban. A ban that allowed Malaria to kill millions. THAT is CREDIBILITY.

Bjorn Lomborg calls for more money to be spent on safe drinking water projects and better health care for the Third World. Less on fighting a phantom like AGW with it's scamy carbon credits scheme. Now THAT is credibility.

Gore is not an expert on "Global Warming" or "Climate Change" last time I checked he was a politician not scientist.

If he really cared about his cause you would think he would waive the appearance fees. There really is no difference between Al Gore, Benny Hinn, or so many other charlatan preachers.

There is no way this will break even. Even though it will have the appearance of being sold out. The NDP will call on the crowns, the unions and whichever other group to make sure that this event will sell out.

Maybe this gross use of taxpayer dollars will get Murdoch Carriere out of the news.

Justthinkin said:
"HUH????? Never heard of weather patterns and how it gets distributed all over the globe?"

Ok are you ready? Try and keep up.

In simplistic terms, the earth’s atmospheric circulation causes dry air to descend from the upper atmosphere at the mid latitudes causing a high-pressure region around the globe commonly known as the horse latitudes. This is the weather pattern that causes the dry region around the planet at the mid latitudes and creates the Mojave Sahara and Arabian deserts. In Eastern North America during the summer, this dry descending air picks up moisture off the Gulf of Mexico and pushes it north into Manitoba and Ontario. This is the cause of the hot humid air the Eastern Canada suffers from in the summer. The western prairies usually isn’t in the line of weather from the gulf, but receives its weather from both dry continental air from Mexico and less dry air from the west off of the pacific.
As the global temperature rises, the global circulation will intensify thereby increasing the high-pressure areas at Horse Latitudes. This higher pressure will push more moist air into eastern Canada, but will also push the dry continental air that sits to the west of the “dry line” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dry_line up from Mexico into Saskatchewan and Alberta. The end effect will be severely reduced rainfall in the western prairies. When we consider the glaciers that supply water for the west today will be gone, one has to wonder where Alberta and Saskatchewan will get their water without rainfall?
With increased warm moist air being pushed north, the area known as Tornado Alley in the US will be dragged north into Manitoba and Ontario.
It seems few people in Canada is going to get off easy. Maybe some in BC that aren’t near the rising water.
And that is why the economies of Alberta and Saskatchewan will be ruined went they are turned into a dust bowl.

Interesting.

Alby sticks out his/her lip and claims that Lomborg and Ball have no credibility as scientists.

Lomborg is a Ph.D in poli sci, and then was head of the Danish Environmental Assessment Institute.

Ball is a Ph.D in climatology, taught climatology and studied historical climatology extensively.

David Suzuki is a Ph.D in genetics. He was also on the CBC for a long time, making videos that I was forced to watch when my science teachers got too tired to bother.

Al Gore has a bachelors of arts degree, took religious studies, and got a law degree.

Yet somehow, Alby claims that Suzuki and Gore have more credibility as scientists than the previous two! Could it be that's simply because the latter two agree with Alby's point of view? Naw.

Posted by: Yukon Gold at April 6, 2007 12:47 AM

"Tim Ball studied the hundreds of years worth of The Hudson Bay Company's climate records. THAT is KNOWLEDGE AND CREDIBILITY."

The only thing written by Ball on Hudson's Bay is a book he co-authored by the name "Eighteenth-century naturalists of Hudson Bay" that has no connection to climate.
ISBN: 0773522859
There are no other references to Tim Ball in any recognised scientific journal. He has not published anything regarding climate. In short, he's a quack.

...You are basing your entire argument on a TV show? As a earth science major I am learning the fact...a quote from Alby.

I, for one, think you should continue your studies -- and open your mind while you're at it. As for the comment regarding the Great Global Warming Swindle, well why not? You seem to base all of your statements on that most famous of scientists, Al Gore and his work.

Next, I think you need to READ the IPCC/UN report and some of the 'scientific fact' contained within. While you're at that, also dig up some of the work from the contributors to that report...so much of it is politically based, non-scientific drivel.

One last thing; I studied Geology in University and even worked for the dreaded Big Oil here in the States; I've since come to my senses. But since you're an 'Earth Science' (whatever that is) major, I'd suggest you do a little more reading in the field of Geology and its related subjects...you may find it enlightening.

Posted by: billygoat at April 6, 2007 9:08 AM

C'mon Billygoat. You can't attack the reputation of IPCC "scientists" because they are really nice and trying to save the planet. Anyone against them is a bad person, just like Steve Harper, that big fat meanie. It's the neoconservatives' fault.

Posted by: Shamrock at April 6, 2007 9:13 AM

Once more, all together:

We have no idea how much (if at all) any change will happen and anyone who says they know for sure is lying, or at the very least misinformed. About sea levels. About global temperatures. About the future location of the dryline. About tornado alley.

I won't go into it because it's a long and boring explanation, and I've put this forward before. Essentially the computer models on which the climate forecasts are based are flawed, by necessity. Garbage in, garbage out, assumptions, approximations, the inability to explicitly solve the equations and the artificial dampening of wave effects all contribute to us not being able to say for sure what's going on.

Maybe it's warming this much or that much. Maybe it's less, and maybe it's more. Maybe we humans are causing it, and maybe we're not. The point is, it's uncertain.

(Sorry to post this again, Kate, but I want the world to know that climate models are imperfect and thus any pronouncements about their results are imperfect, despite what the alarmists say.)

All I **DO** know is that paying billions of $ to 3rd world countries so they can pollute instead of us is the height of insanity--it's guilt money, quite frankly.

If Al Gore dies of a coronary how will we dispose of the body? cremation will cause a measurable spike in CO2 emmissions, can we seal him in a box ?or can we trade him for Moe Strongs carbon footprint in a steel cage.

"You are basing your entire argument on a TV show? As a earth science major I am learning the fact." - IQ39

Only in the land of the moonbats is prediction synonomous with fact.

The Weather Network has the latest equipment in weather prediction, even more accurate than Environment Canada, yet they can't predict the weather 10 days out, let alone 50 years.

Earth science major. Soft science for the soft brained.

the weather network cant even get the next 5 days right around here in vancouver. but someone with an IQ of 39 can predict 10 or 15 years. HAHAHA

I thinik I will repeat something every moonbat should have to say over and over and over...

ITS THE SUN, STUPID!!!

Albatross,
Just when is this dust bowl for Saskatchewan and Alberta bowl going to start? I thought globule warning was well under way?
Or maybe your referring to the on in the 1890's, or the 30's or the late 60's or the mid 80's or the late 90's.
Funny thing is the there is a huge area of Saskatchewan is that is so wet many farmers are faced with not being able to seed all of their crops for the second year in row.
On top of this it’s so cold that melting has been delayed by weeks setting things back even further.
Like all the other religions that claimed the world was coming to an end and didn't the deadline for the apocalypse is thrown further into the future again and again and again like it has for over 2000 years.
Whoops we made a mistake in our calculations its now 10 years from now when blah blah blah........
I have work in research and development in various fields for 30 years so seeing trough false logic and baseless assumptions have become easy.
The first pattern of those who have based their argument on falsehoods is to fear monger that catastrophe is just around the corner.
The second key pattern is they react with righteous anger at those that question the science.
The third most telling pattern is that there is always enormous egos with the Jesus syndrome with righteous disciples standing in the way of the truth. How dare you challenge me, don't you know who I am! In this case: I am the savior of the planet!!
Which side of the argument has the most characters claiming to be the world's savior and guess which side has the most righteous disciples??(Albatross: I'm just trying to ensure my children have a future on this planet.)

It is well under way; take a drive up to the nearest glacier and see for ourself. Enjoy the rain while it lasts.

Albatross is tyical of a Globule warning fear mongerer. Their argument is based of falsehood and when pressed cannot answer the question directly.
These are Abatross's words "And that is why the economies of Alberta and Saskatchewan will be ruined went they are turned into a dust bowl".
So where is the dust bowl? Why is it wetter in central Saskatchan than it has been in a generation and colder than it has been in 20 years?
The fear mongerers scour the earth to find examples of temperature anomalies. Even though these anomalies have occured for billions of years and they claim they are something new and dangerous.
What a tragic and absolute waste of their time on this planet. It is about as productive as screaming that water is wet and that we should stop all economies until we solved the problem of wet water.
