Der Spiegel usually contains the typical anti-Americanism of the Eurosnot class, so it's no surprise to see a story start like this:
Forty-eight percent of Germans think the United States is more dangerous than Iran, a new survey shows, with only 31 percent believing the opposite.Ho hum, just the usual so far. What is surprising is that the commentary gets better after that.
But for real words of wisdom you need to read how an American responds in their talkback forum:
Got some bad news for all you little hunlets out there in autobahnland: 99% of Americans (that 1% are devotees of Weimar-era smut in places in NYC and LA, like for instance my neighbors here in Brooklyn) -- from Christofascist theocon cheneybot worshipper of Chimpy McBushhitlerburton in East Jesus, Tennessee to racist videogame murder junkies holed up in a survivalist compound in Fanatic, Idado -- are really completely indifferent to what Germans, or for that matter Spainiards, Italians, Belgians, Frenchpersons, Russians, Swedes, Norweigians, and all the other huddled massed of PC-euthanized, welfare-state besotted, noodlewrist eurogoobers think about us. YOU DO NOT COUNT. Repeat after me -- YOU DO NOT COUNT. You have surrendered whatever liberties were left you by Rousseau, Bonaparte, and the Kaiser to the fat pimply bureaucrats of the EU, who are now working to hand it over lock, stock and barrell to the Muslims. Well, enjoy it, you mangy pups. It'll be sort of sad, to see monuments of European civilization coverted into mosgues, then the physical plant of the continent sliding down into the pit where reside Muslim cities like cairo and ankara, but it's what you want.Posted by Jaeger at March 30, 2007 4:11 PMIslam and Europeans honestly deserve each other: a pale shadow of a once sort of great people (well, not the spainiards or beligians) signing what little bits of heritage wasn't regulated out of existence by the '68 crowdover to the ignorant, blood-stupid slaves of a pedophile bedoiun date-merchant and brigand. Hate away, chumps. It's sure doing you a world of good, isn't it.
Yeah, the comments... Blunt but true, blunt in my own manner. Will they ever listen? No. Too many times they were screwed, too many times they believed their leaders who led them into almost entire annihilation. They do not listen anymore to anyone.
That's my perception of Western Europe.
Eastern Europe is not entirely lost, there are bright people there, but they are poor and the smart ones are here or planning to come over soon. I meet them at the range all the time, it's usually a young couple teaching their kids to shoot rifles. Good for us.

Yeah, but sometimes it's really funny. For example, an American magazine would not put Tom Cruise in his place as - heh - efficiently as this:
SPIEGEL: Do you see it as your job to recruit new followers for Scientology?
Cruise: I'm a helper. For instance, I myself have helped hundreds of people get off drugs. In Scientology, we have the only successful drug rehabilitation program in the world. It's called Narconon.
SPIEGEL: That's not correct. Yours is never mentioned among the recognized detox programs. Independent experts warn against it because it is rooted in pseudo science.
Cruise: You don't understand what I am saying. It's a statistically proven fact that there is only one successful drug rehabilitation program in the world. Period.
SPIEGEL: With all due respect, we doubt that.

It makes perfect sense that when members of one European nation criticize your foreign policy that you obnoxiously lash out against as many others as possible within the confines of a facile blog post.
Well done, you patriotic American you! You have single-handedly refuted all of the criticisms that have been made about your foreign policy... and your imperial tendencies... and your pontificating nature... and your insensitivity... and your obstinence. Your arguments were totally convincing: you don't count. I for one never saw that one coming.

Vis-a-vis Americans versus Europeans, this would be a classic case of the pot calling the kettle black except it is at least debatable that Americans have the above characterstics.
As for euros, there is no doubt whatsoever that they exhibit such tendencies. We have history ever since the Magna Carta as a record.

Oh, please, go read a book. The US is the only superpower that decided NOT to exercise political hegemony over its neighbours. As a citizen of oil-rich Canada, this something of which you should be even faintly aware.
Europe, Japan, South Korea, Kuwait and now Iraq. In each case, American troops arrived and -- here's the important part -- left or intend to leave after democratic government was restored or created.
The US occupies a unique historical position in this regard -- along with being the linchpin for Western liberty, stability and wealth -- and all it gets in return are adolescent sneering and petty resentment.
For one month, give China, Russia or even France the status of sole superpower, and then we'll see who has true imperial tendencies.

Posted by: Hans Rupprecht at March 30, 2007 6:53 PMEuropeans have been envious of Americans since WWII and embarrassed about their own incompetenace. They were briefly grateful but they resented the need to keep depending on America for defense against the USSR, so they faked a friendship for 50 years.
When the Berlin Wall fell, there was no need to fake how Old Europe felt about America; they thought the peace dividend was permanent.
They didn’t react for awhile because Clinton had lived among them like Jane Goodall with her apes so he was deemed to be harmless. Plus Europe ended up needing American planes and bombs for the war they started and couldn’t end in Kosovo.
Then Bush came along and literally wore his cowboy boots to Paris and would not yield to the transnational despots running the UN, nor would Blair. Yet again, the Anglosphere was too much for Old Europe to take and they hauled off and gave America the dirty look they’d been saving up for 50 years.
Unfortunately, too many Americans care what Europeans think about them.
I remember in 1981, on excercise in Germany, I was travelling with some American and British soldiers....we were all in uniform....the locals treated the Americans and British like they were dogs, yet fell over backwards to buy me beer, food etc...when I questioned this, and argued on behalf of all NATO troops, they attempted to put me in my place.....well, needless to say, I did not receive any more freebies after that...these retarded euro-weenie morons did not even know who was allowing them to live in freedom by standing toe to toe with 2000 idling soviet tanks...believe me, not one of us NATO troops wanted to be in Germany protecting the nazi/hun/jew murderer's after that

Actually, this is completely true and for reasons that might not immediately be understood.
Even Kate has said that when she travels in the US, Canada effectively disappears.
Except for American who are political junkies, most citizens will never even know what is being said about the US in Europe.
In the Dallas-Fort Worth area alone, there are 5 or 6 million people, and the country we are having problems with is Mexico. So we have plenty to think about and to be concerned about.
When Europe does distinguish itself in a way that excites our approval and appreciation, it's when they stand up, not when they criticize.
Sometimes a European country will display some backbone, and nothing invites US appreciation more than that. So if Europe wants to get our attention, the way to go about it is through strength, determination, and aggressiveness directed at our mutual enemies.
Whining is just weakness and appeasement and is not worth making our papers.
Hans, you may already know that at one time in Texas history, a decision had to be made whether to speak English or German. This gives you some idea of how many Germans' descendents are in Texas. Democratic initiatives in respect to Iraq will be vetoed by President Bush. And even Hillary has said that should she become President, America will have a presence in Iraq for a long time to come. The scary stats are the futher outlook for our children in Germany and Europe in general. The Muslim population in Germany will rise to over 45% by 2025. 1/3 of all children in Europe by 2025 will be born to Muslim families. We all know that the increase in Muslim's in Europe was due to large amounts of refugees in the 70's.
Talking with my relatives in Europe they are scared and support Bush. They are scared of a very secretive population completely self contained with no real contact with their neighbours or country. Posted by: chip at March 30, 2007 11:58 PMThey get too much from the mainstream left-wing news media
Posted by: spurwing plover at March 31, 2007 12:02 AMI should give one example.
Here, the Economist says:
"When the WMD turned out not to exist, Mr Bush inflated this “freedom agenda”. In his inauguration speech in 2005, after his re-election, he connected Iraq to America's “great liberating tradition” in foreign policy."
Here's what Bush said in the 2003 State of the Union, among other times:
" The dictator who is assembling the world's most dangerous weapons has already used them on whole villages -- leaving thousands of his own citizens dead, blind, or disfigured. Iraqi refugees tell us how forced confessions are obtained -- by torturing children while their parents are made to watch. International human rights groups have catalogued other methods used in the torture chambers of Iraq: electric shock, burning with hot irons, dripping acid on the skin, mutilation with electric drills, cutting out tongues, and rape. If this is not evil, then evil has no meaning. (Applause.)
And tonight I have a message for the brave and oppressed people of Iraq: Your enemy is not surrounding your country -- your enemy is ruling your country. (Applause.) And the day he and his regime are removed from power will be the day of your liberation. (Applause.) ...
And as we and our coalition partners are doing in Afghanistan, we will bring to the Iraqi people food and medicines and supplies -- and freedom. (Applause.) ...
America is a strong nation, and honorable in the use of our strength. We exercise power without conquest, and we sacrifice for the liberty of strangers.
Americans are a free people, who know that freedom is the right of every person and the future of every nation. The liberty we prize is not America's gift to the world, it is God's gift to humanity. (Applause.) "
You see, the freedom thing isn't a recent phenomenon. It was spoken of all the time. The media either weren't listening, or more likely, they've decided that it doesn't fit a narrative that made the war all about WMD.
The Economist should know better. At one time, it did.

Translation: Bend over..yes I think I will.
The article - " Evil Americans, Poor Mullahs" is a wake up call for not only Germans but all Europeans. Following is the disaster that awaits the world if Iran obtains a nucleur weapon.
IT’S ALL ABOUT IRAN
We need to deal with Iran now otherwise the US could be left at one minute to midnight with no other option but to attack Iran. The longer the US waits to impose a meaningful sanction regime against Iran, the greater the necessity of military action will become – with all the potential disastrous political and economic consequences for both parties.
The Iranian Sanction Agreement just negotiated by the Security Council is an absolute joke. The US is allowing these countries to delay and obstruct sanctions against Iran.
THE REALITY IS THE US DOES NOT NEED CHINA OR RUSSIA TO INPOSE SANCTIONS AGAINST IRAN. THE US CAN IMPOSE DEVASTATING RECIPROCAL SANCTIONS
(Go to www.irandemocracy.net)
Lest we all forget one of the main reasons for the Iraq war was that China, Germany, Russia and France had been bought off by Saddem through the UN Oil for Food program. It is hard to believe that these countries by their present actions are again moving us in the direction of war with Iran. By their greed, they are totally blind to the very real danger Iran poses to the entire Middle East. There is an impending political and military catastrophe facing America, Europe, China and the World in the Middle East. This catastrophe will lead to a disastrous disruption of oil supplies that will force oil prices to $10.00/$20.00/gallon and throw the world economy into a massive recession affecting all world economies espically the developing economies of China and India. This could cause political instability on a world wide scale. The reality of the situation is that you can talk with the Iranian leadership until you are blue in the face - AND NOTHING WILL BE ACHIEVED. Iran is marching forward to obtaining a nuclear weapon and will not be stopped with endless talk. TIME IS NOT ON OUR SIDE.
The West faces the greatest strategic defeat in its history.
As described in this article - if the US is forced out of Iraq the following disaster will ensue.
The Iraqi government immediately collapses.
All Iraqis who supported the Government and US flee the country by the hundreds of thousands.
Iran immediately steps into the power vacuum supporting the seizure of Baghdad by their radical Shiite militia allies.
A radical Shiite Islamic government is imposed on Iraq.
A podium against the Sunnis begins with millions killed. The survivors are driven out of the country.
One million Hezbollah style fighters are enlisted into the radical Shiite Militias. (If Hezbollah can muster an army of fifty thousand fighters from a Lebanese population of 1.5 million Shiites – then in Iraq a Hezbollah style government would create an army of one million Shiite fanatics.)
This force in alliance with the Iranian army captures Riyadh within weeks and seizes the Gulf States.
They then march into Jordon creating a Shitte Crescent stretching from Iran to the Suez Canal and from the Mediterean Sea to the Russian Cossacks.
As previously mentioned - with 80% of the world’s oil, under Iran's control the price will soar to $10.00/$20.00 per gallon.
Israel is attacked with rockets on all sides effectively shutting down the Israeli economy and destroying the Jewish state.
After obtaining nuclear weapons, Iran unleashes terrorist forces worldwide attacking Europe and the US.
These terrorists smuggle nuclear weapons into London, Paris, Washington, New York and kill millions.
This nightmare does not have to happen.
Its time for Europe to wake up and realize that it is not US cities that will be within range of Iranian ballastic missles but Berlin, Paris, London, Madrid etc.

There are more Americans of German descent than any other ethnic group (2nd is Irish, 3rd is English). But to the point: How is it a Canadian can believe that the US is "imperialistic"? If we were, why isn't Canada the 51st state?
Think about it. You have oil, natural resources, and hey, all that great wilderness and wildlife. If we were "imperialist," Canada would be at the top of our list of nations to conquer.
