Y2Kyoto: Legislating Morality

commandments.jpg
"As the former vice-president said as he accepted his Academy Award, climate change is moral issue, not just a political issue,” - Lorne Calvert

Tim Thorstenson, North Dakota State University;

As a scientist, I find the current strategy of the global warming crusade to be fascinating. Particularly because I am a scientist, I also find it insulting. Everyone should find it very disturbing.

I am referring to the fact that the global warming issue is now regarded as a "moral" matter by its advocates.

[...]

The message of these pseudo-moralists is that "good" people must start by accepting the pre-ordained orthodox conclusion and then work backwards through the claimed facts, making not an intellectual assessment of whether they are indeed true, but rather a "moral" assessment of whether or not they agree with the conclusion. Things claimed as facts which are "good" (in this moral sense) should be embraced and those which are "bad" (in this same moral sense) should be discarded, not because they are factually false, but because they are "immoral".

In all honesty, this should scare the heck out of everyone. This is an atmosphere in which scientific inquiry is steered not by factual truth, but by a pre-ordained "moral" position. What is at work here is exactly what the liberals have always claimed to condemn. How is this any different from the decree of a radical theocratic dictator who will allow only those scientific conclusions which are approved by his church?

maybe we can legislate morals like not stealing the treasury.

Posted by: cal2 at April 6, 2007 11:08 AM

speaking of science and morality, it intrigued me how many scientists on the manhattan project decided they didnt want to be associated with it and opposed use of The Bomb once it bacame clear Truman was delighted to have a way to a very quick end to the war and was indeed going to use the thing they had successfully designed and built.

that of course would be *AFTER* all the fun they had tinkering with gadgets and 'tickling the dragon's tail'.

To me it is the damage done to the scientific community as a whole. When they and their pronouncements are looked upon in the same light as those of politicians something is definitely wrong. When any scientist announces anything now my view is, yeh yeh, pass the beer nuts. They as a whole have lost their creditability.

meanwhile, the last 15 + years of satellite derived temperature data, the most accurate data scientists have ( not corrupted by urban heat island effect or land use impacts) shows a cooling trend.

Damn those immoral satellites

" How is this any different from the decree of a radical theocratic dictator who will allow only those scientific conclusions which are approved by his church?"

No different at all, and much more dangerous, as Al has the power of the MSM, and Hollywood behind him.

We are going to have to fight long and hard to keep from being taxed to death, and have most of our precious freedoms curtailed by these zealots.

"What is at work here is exactly what the liberals have always claimed to condemn."
Did this quote come from a scientist or John Baird? It seems very political for a scientist. Cause I thought it was science issue.

This is just the voice of a partisan Conservative
yelling back at the radio - "Peter Van Loan speaks for me."

Dark Age? Perverted science?
Sir Winston Churchill stood alone against another "Moses". Dare to be a Daniel, was Winny.
...-

"But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new Dark Age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted,
by the lights of perverted science." (June 18, 1940, House of Commons)

If someone got into a boat, went a little ways off the shore, and radioed in a 'Mayday', Coast Guard Search and Rescue would come rushing out to save you. If, upon arrival, it was discovered that you weren't really in any danger...

1) If it was obvious that you never had any reason to believe, you would face criminal charges, hefty fines and be expected to pay back the costs of mobilizing the rescue teams.

2) If you had reasonable grounds to think you were in danger but the threat wasn't real, you would avoid the criminal charges. But you would still get the bill for the costs of mobilizing your rescuers.

When it finally becomes clear that this global warming schtick is a sham, who's going to be held accountable for the massive amounts of money doled out that could have been put to much better use?

Iknow that that's a stupid question. But to me, that's the whole point. No matter what the topic, you can't turn control of societal policy over to people who will never be accountable when they're found to be wrong.

Well, we all know what scientific background Al Gore has (degree in Politics).

What about the *scientific* background of some of the others who are preaching scientific *morality*, or just morality in general, to us from their Hollywood bully pulpit? Here is just a quicky view of a few that I was able to dig up:

Sean Penn attended Santa Monica College in Santa Monica, California, studying auto mechanics and speech, but did not graduate with a degree.

Rosie O'Donnell briefly attended Dickinson College, later transferring to Boston University but dropped out to pursue comedy.

Richard Gere graduated from North Syracuse Central High School, where he excelled at gymnastics and music, playing the trumpet.

Charlie Sheen attended Santa Monica High School. Just a few weeks before graduation, Sheen was expelled from the school for poor grades and bad attendance.

Natalie Maines graduated in 1992 from Lubbock High School in Lubbock, Texas.

Mike Farrell graduated from Hollywood High School.

Susan Sarandon graduated from Edison High School in 1964, and then attended The Catholic University of America from 1964 to 1968 where she attained a BA in drama.

Tim Robbins joined the drama club at the prestigious Stuyvesant High School. He spent two years at SUNY Plattsburgh and then returned to California to study at the UCLA Film School . Graduation in 1981.

Johnny Depp dropped out of high school in 1979 to become a rock musician.

George Clooney spent his earlier years in Columbus, Ohio, living in St. Michael's elementary school. Later, he attended Kentucky's Augusta High School, which he graduated in 1979, but was a poor student. He briefly attended Northern Kentucky University from 1979-81, but did not graduate, earning no more than freshman-level credits. He also very briefly attended the University of Cincinnati, but again did not graduate.

Bill Maher graduated from Pascack Hills High School in Montvale, New Jersey. He received his Bachelor of Arts in English from Cornell University in 1978.

I'm pretty sure another hour spent looking would produce just more of the same.

The Kyoto Protocol is the convergence of bad science, zealotry, hypocrisy and greed. Even when the bad science is revealed, the "morals" of zealotry, hypocrisy and greed (from those standing to make "megatonnes of money") will keep this whole sham going.

It doesn't matter how much scientific evidence is produced to debunk the Gore and friends hysteria. People like this will never concede to being wrong because it would be too damaging to their inflated egos. Admitting they are wrong will never be an option to people like this, no matter what. By the way, today (April 6th) it is -28C with the windchill here on the prairies. Al Gore can stick his man-made global warming BS where the sun doesn't shine.

Hot Air on one hand, Ignored solutions on the other.

There should be a Law. Plug-ins for all trucks at Rest stops
**
Trucking:
Some 5,000 truck stops operate in the United States, providing space for truckers to rest and refuel. The Department of Transportation mandates that truckers rest *off-duty* for a minimum of 10 hours if their workday includes 11 hours of driving.

Resting truckers often idle their engines during this time, to heat or cool their sleeper compartments or to run electrical appliances. Truck stop electrification allows truckers to plug in and turn off their engines, cut diesel costs, and reduce emissions.

Also, the trucking industry is adopting electric transport refrigeration units to cool perishable cargo.

Electrifying a single truck stop parking space can save 5,840 gallons of diesel fuel per year, and reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by the equivalent of taking 1,150 cars off the road.**

1 plug-in = 1,150 vehicles off the road in saved diesel dinosaur juice.

A black-gold mine. Is government even aware?

"As the former vice-president said as he accepted his Academy Award, climate change is a moral issue, not just a political issue"

Al's right!

But surely poverty is a moral issue too.

Is Al prepared to place all his extensive financial assets in the service of the world's poor? Is their plight no more important than that of the environment?

Oops, silly me, I forgot. The poor are people. So they're part of the problem, not the solution.

The ecocultist "Final Solution" that is.

Hey...I just stumbled upon the answer to Saskatchewan's ever declining population numbers.
Some fool from the U.N. sponsored group of "scientists" was just on CBC spreading the fear about climate change. He said something to the effect that the coast lines and cities on both sides of the country would disappear because the polar ice is melting and the oceans will rise and drown them all out. SO.....why doesn't Calvert start advertising now..."move to Saskatchewan..save yourself and your family from empending doom...You will never get drowned out in Saskatchewan unless you are a gopher" That way all the loonie lefties from each side of Canada can all stay dry together and help Saskatchewan grow! Good idea????

Al Gore and David Suzuki have competition.

Yesterday, two nice ladies, one elderly and one young, came to my door. Jehova Witnesses, they said. I usually just tell them I have a direct line and that is that.

But this time their openning line got my attention.

"Have you been watching the National all week with Peter M ?? About the horrors of GW ??" they asked.

Nope. Never ever watch TV anymore.

"well, our church, JW, believes that only our Lord can save us. Not Al Gore"

I could not believe what I was hearing. They were using the fear-mongering of the Kyoto Kult to press their case. In a 'one-up-man's-way.

Now 'I' have seen the light. On my street. In Kelowna. In Canada !!

And, by the way, after 20 mins of friendly discussion, they agreed that the whole problem with the Kyoto hype is the media. Amen.

I've been referring to these folks at "Eco-Nazis", but I may be wrong.

I trust that doesn't offend anyone. If so, I apologize.

It is a shame that Mother Theresa passed away some time ago as Al Gore is in major need of hypocrisy credits. Perhaps Kate can make a contest out of finding the least hypocritical person on earth for Al to deal with. If he finds someone like that he could be carbon neutral AND hypocrisy neutral.

Moral issue my foot. It is a wallet issue, and the Goracles will see their first big defeat in Cdn fed election. What a laugh that the NDP thinks Tories "wouldn't dare" force an election on environment, because they "don't have credibility" - for instance we don't want to sign on to the Kyoto UN kleptoprogram. Canadians are interested in feel good slogans about global warming, not actually making sacrifices. I think they know intuitively it is bunk and Canada, no matter what pain we endure for Gore and Suzuki, will not stop anthropogenic warming (if that is why it's happening). Dionsky and NDP think Canadians will bite into the hook that Kyoto will be good for business. Yes, let's transfer our wealth to the UN or third world countries, while taxing the crap of of Canadians (yes, that what happens with carbon taxes aimed at those evil capitalistic oil companies). There's a winning, credible strategy. Let's get off oil, fine, but not through the environmental and economic disaster that Kyoto offers to those nations stupid enough to embrace it.

Would love to see the gore pic, life size, outside of any place gore is speaking. Why will he not take questions. Must be because his answers are lies.

Posted by: mary T. at April 6, 2007 12:34 PM

Terrence Corcoran, of the Financial Post, has got it right. The whole problem with the Kyoto fiasco is the gov't funding of the nut-cases in the environmental movement. The 'nut-cases'. The good ones, like Patrick Moore's greenspirit.com probably do not recieve a dime.

"But politicians and governments cannot have it both ways forever. You can't fund the climate-science industry, a vast self-interested global community of subsidized players, and expect to be able to ignore the effects of their work. The science will bite back. This is a dangerous game being played out across the world, but especially in the industrialized West. Without the West's billions in funding, the great UN-backed climate control industry would not exist." Terrence Corcoran.

//www.canada.com/nationalpost/financialpost/story.html?id=d95049d0-80b6-4823-a1ce-132bd4ebb88a

And then, from Mike De Souza, CanWest
"But future Canadian studies on adaptation to the consequences of global warming are in jeopardy because they are being starved of funding, warns the head of a major research foundation. Since 2000, the Canada Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric Sciences has relied on $110 million in federal grants to fund peer-reviewed studies at universities. But in recent years requests to the previous Liberal and current Conservative governments for more funding have fallen on deaf ears."

One Hundred and Ten Million Friggin Dollars !!

to-fund-peer-reviewed-studies-at-universities !!

Like,.. so, just who might the peer-reviewer be ?? Suzuki ?? Or one of his students ?? -- The whole problem. The whole ball of wax.

//www.canada.com/montrealgazette/news/story.html?id=f00f3ad6-40f1-49ab-8291-806a9ae2b6b1

And I am sure the $110M is just the tip of the berg.

Can one think of better ways to spend $$ ?? No hoaxes now, wise spending. Hospitals, health care, roads, clean air and water, ... I would think the basket-weaving-wakos at the Universities should be last.

It's gone from theory to "fact".

It is now apparantly a truth, just as we have night, day, sunshine, cloudiness,

so too we have man made "global warming". What's frightening is the level of intellectual dishonesty involved in this transition.

The problem is it hasn't been "proven" in any sense of the word. Forget causation, they don't even have the correlation down yet.

And unless my high school science teacher was lying to me, even if you get to the point of a strong positive correlation (which we don't have here), isn't DISPROVING other theorhetical potential causes of the effect kind of important?

And that's where the circularity and intellectual dishonesty comes in.

We aren't supposed to look for other potential causes, like say, that giant firey ball of flames that's hundreds of thousands of times the size of the Earth and which his the sole source of heat for the entire solar system.

To look eleswhere for causes means not just the possibility of weakening the theory, but actually disproving it.

I think they call this collection of crucial steps which are now forbidden the SCIENTIFIC METHOD.

Science has been hijacked such that the scientific method is now forbidden,

in the name of science.

Mike - as someone who has been involved in the hydroelectricity industry all around the world for 40 years, for the past 20 years, I have been using the term "ecofacist" to describe the smug, self-satisfied, sanctimonious and serenely ignorant fanatics who have been harassing hydro development around the world.

They have become much more extremely lately, so your terminology is acceptable.

THE "GOREACLE" announced the Lord IPCC has spoken:

"I give thee these 15 environmental commandments"

I think I will paint my doorposts and the angel of death will PASSOVER me.

And now on the moral issue of Easter.

Gospel Reading: John 19:17-30 ( for fuller passage see: John 18:1-19:42)

"So they took Jesus, and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called the place of a skull, which is called in Hebrew Golgotha. There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. Pilate also wrote a title and put it on the cross; it read, 'Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews'. Many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek. The chief priests of the Jews then said to Pilate, 'Do not write, The King of the Jews', but, 'This man said, I am King of the Jews'. Pilate answered, 'What I have written I have written'. When the soldiers had crucified Jesus they took his garments and made four parts, one for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was without seam, woven from top to bottom; so they said to one another, 'Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be'. this was to fulfill the scripture. "They parted my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots". So the soldiers did this. But standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, 'Woman, behold, your son!' Then he said to the disciple, 'Behold, your mother!' And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. After this Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfil the scripture), 'I thirst'. A bowl full of vinegar stood there; so they put a sponge full of the vinegar on hyssop and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the vinegar, he said, 'It is finished'; and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit"

Old Testament Reading: Isaiah 52:13-53:12

3 He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that made us whole, and with his stripes we are healed.

Psalm 31:2,6,12-17,24

2 Incline thy ear to me, rescue me speedily! Be thou a rock of refuge for me, a strong fortress to save me!
6 Thou hatest those who pay regard to vain idols; but I trust in the LORD.
12 I have passed out of mind like one who is dead; I have become like a broken vessel.
13 Yea, I hear the whispering of many -- terror on every side! -- as they scheme together against me, as they plot to take my life.
14 But I trust in thee, O LORD, I say, "Thou art my God."
15 My times are in thy hand; deliver me from the hand of my enemies and persecutors!
16 Let thy face shine on thy servant; save me in thy steadfast love!
17 Let me not be put to shame, O LORD, for I call on thee; let the wicked be put to shame, let them go dumbfounded to Sheol.
24 Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the LORD!

Happy Passover and Easter to all us 'Small Dead Animals'.

Sammy,
In 1997 I was cornered by friends who had just turned Jehovas. They even brought the grand poohba of their church to convert me. Their claim was that humans are scum which was going to prompt God to end the world in the year 2000. I bet them that when the year 2000 rolled around that nothing would happen and that they would claim they made a mistake and the dealine would be thrown another 10-20 years into the future. Guess who won the bet?
Now they are rolling the global warming hype into their fear mongering because it fits their pattern of an apocolyptic end perfectly.
The only thing I don't get is which 100,000 Jehovas are going to be saved when the world comes to an end and why? By that time Isn't it going o be too hot to live here on earth and isn't hell supposed to be the hot place?

Does anyone remember this news item on CBC?

"Inuit seek answers to Arctic sun quirks"
Excerpt: "For the past several years, residents in the High Arctic have observed that the winter dark season is ending earlier than usual, with the sun coming up at a different place than what people are used to seeing.

"The people [are] talking about earlier sunrise, more light in the dark season, instead of being more total darkness than before," Grise Fiord resident Larry Audlaluk said Thursday, adding that he has heard similar observations from people in other Far North communities."

-------------------

Wouldn't someone think that earlier daylight would have an affect on temperatures in the arctic? Why doesn't the MSM pick up on this?

What do these scientists and the people at Jonestown have in common?

They are all completely without insight into the psychological forces that condition behavior, thinking, and feeling.

Whether we are thinking in terms of a Freudian Id and Superconsciousness, or a Jungian Shadow, there is a whole dimension of being that cannot be studied by relentless attention to the objective world.

As a consequence, no matter how advanced technologically we become, we are often still primitives psychologically.

Science, including psychology, was subjugated to the will of the state in the old Soviet Union.

In the West where scientists are essentially free, we did not expect to see them mimic the kind of groupthink that asserts personal agenda over fact. And yet we are faced with it in the pseudo-science of climate change.

One of the early profilers of serial killers was on the boob tube a while back, and he said he really kind of avoided people now that he is retired, because everyone has a power drive to be the one who is "right", the one whose opinion is dominant, and he has become uncomfortably sensitive to this after so many years of study.

So my point is that the levels of deceit, lies, deception, prevarication, that we see coming from this psuedo-scientific community really demonstrates that despite degrees and pretigious universtities these scientists are still in the grip of primitive, atavistic forces in the psyche that a lot of mature truck drivers integrated and resolved long ago.

Unless humans find a way to come to grips with the psychological dimension (and no one is more aware of the flaws of the discipline of psychology more than I am), human progress will always be feigned. And we will always be forced to look forward to the psychological dimension being the Achilles Heel of mankind.

Back from my polar expedition to the gate..retrieved the latest Watchtower/Awake..after a quick study I find in the Watching the World section, interesting article on farming..it is proof, that farmers are indeed quite sane!
Farms Healthy for the Mentally Ill
Over 100 experts from 14 countries recently met in Stavanger Norway,to learn about Green Care,a concept that combines farming, teaching, and healthcare. According to the broadcasting company NRK,some who have mentally ill for years no longer need to be institutionalized when they start doing farm work.It is 'healthy for mind and body.'More than 600 traditional farms in Norway cooperate with Green Care for which they receive extra income.
Sounds like a sensible approach to me..anyone that loves the land knows how soothing the soil, the fresh air can be,and hard work is always good for the soul. Can you imagine the houls of outrage tho, from the dippers over loss of good jobs, due to de-institutionalized care? The frowns of horror from McGuinty,Holland etc.,over "forcing" these poor people into programs they didn't create, and making them realize some self-esteem,? Sounds pretty progressive to me..and having spent many yrs.in the field of care-giving profession..having witnessed the demoralizing of kids, and adults in some of these warehouses..it just makes sense, that life down on the farm WOULD be so much better.
As for end of world date, will continue the bathroom reading of my new watchtower/awake,and get back to you,so you can all start your prep!

BY kyoto joe McGoracle and the sheep

Well, come on all of you, big strong men,
Uncle AlGore needs your help again.
Yeah, he's got himself in a terrible jam
Way down yonder in saskatchawan
So shut down your farm and pick up a mule,
Dr Suzuki says you farm like fools.

And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a hoot,
Next stop is kyoto;
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the carb credits ,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we're all gonna die

Ever since they had been claiming it was a 'moral' issue, something didn't sit right with it. And you've nailed it perfectly! 'That side' opposes the application of traditional morality in every issue - pornography, prostitution, drug use, extramarital affairs, cheating, lying, thievery, all the typical Liberal family values.

But NOW they want us all to behave 'morally'? Truly outrageous. Well done, Kate, great ammo for the cause.

A Moses aside.

I note that the networks for Easter weekend have given us a steady diet of

Violence- lots of Clint Eastwood and Mad Max
Supernatural- Blair Witch, Constantine

and two count 'em two. Easterish Movies.

The main stay " The Ten Commandments"- passover

and "Barabbas"- actually a new testament Christian movie.

Enter Suzukiites:

"Only schoolchildren remain rich fodder willing to believe it is up to them now to Save The World,..."

The Kyoto Conspiracy (Gore, Enron, Carbon Trading, Global Warming)

Not one single day goes by in New Zealand now without a reference somewhere to global warming, and New Zealand’s requirement to comply with the Kyoto protocol. But few people realise that Kyoto was the brainchild of a corrupt multinational energy company, looking to make a buck out of the green movement. KEN RING explains

Amidst the talk about the benefits that Kyoto Protocol is sup-posed to promote, it is perhaps forgotten especially amongst the greenies how Kyoto was born in the corridors of very big business. The name Enron has all but faded from our news pages since the company went down in flames in 2001 amidst charges of fraud, bribery, price fixing and graft. But without Enron there would have been no Kyoto Protocol. [...]

Enron then started to finance everything related to the global warming hype, including grants to scientists – but asking for results favorable to their interest – “proof” that humans were responsible for the excessive emissions of CO2 through fossil fuel burning. The fire of malaise, now lit and kindled, only required feeding.[...]

As the movement to establish the Kyoto Protocol developed momentum, it was necessary for Ken Lay to build up alliances with the green movement including Greenpeace.[...]

Despite all the handwringing and increasingly desperate hysteria, where global warming is concerned there has been a failure to force this paranoid religion onto the world. Since the Rio Conference in 1992, the greens have tried using the threat of global warming to induce Protestant guilt in us all, to cap growth, to change lifestyles, to attack the car, industry and the Great Satan of America. They have lost. ...-

NASA Extinguishes
Global-Warming Fire
By Patrick Michaels
The Cato Institute
2-9-2

It really happened.

The NASA scientist who lit the bonfire of the global warming vanities with his flamboyant congressional testimony 14 years ago, has turned the hose on its dying embers.

There is now no reason for the Bush administration to give an inch on climate change. Sure, energy efficient technologies (like my Honda hybrid) are worth exploring. But there is absolutely no scientific reason for any expensive policy like the Kyoto Protocol on global warming. Mr. Bush led the world by being the first to walk away from Kyoto, and science has proven him correct.

NASA's James Hansen now predicts precisely the same, small amount of warming in the next 50 years that the much-derided "climate skeptics" predicted all along. According to both the skeptics and Mr. Hansen, the planet is destined for a mere 0.7 degree Centigrade (1.25 degree Fahrenheit) warming between now and 2050. It's a good thing "W" listened to those skeptics before he decided on Kyoto. If he had waited for NASA, he might have committed the United States down the road to an unwarranted economic disaster for no good reason.

How did Mr. Hansen, once the darling of the green apocalyptics, come to adopt the scientific position they detest? Nature compelled, and NASA disposed. ...-

Notice the non-stop hyping of the recent IPCC report. With a lot of stories there is an attempt at a professional, neutral attitude, but not when it comes to this crap. They ooze drooling credulity, they report every word as if it's absolutely the final verdict.

Sensible climate change article from New Zealand-worth forwarding I think:

Shouldering the burden
The Dominion Post | Thursday, 5 April 2007

OVER THE FENCE - JON MORGAN
The cynic in me can't resist seeing the climate change issue as being mainly about votes.

Labour has sensed a rising concern about the way we treat the environment and gone green. National has joined in.

Suddenly, the debate about the causes of climate change has ended.

It is too important to wait for more science. We have to act now to save the planet.

All very laudable. But it is farmers and foresters who, so far, are being told they will have to shoulder the burden.

Understandably, they are getting pretty irate.

The policy has taken over and science has been left behind. Farmers who try to argue the science - and conclude that our Kyoto Agreement commitment is fatally flawed - are told they have missed the bus. And I have been upbraided for saying so in a recent column.

But can the bus be stopped? Should it be? It would take a brave politician to repudiate an international agreement.

The United Nations-linked Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports a 90 per cent certainty among the scientists it consulted that humans are responsible for rising global temperatures.

An unhealthy hysteria has taken hold - anyone who doesn't agree is a loony of the flat earth variety.

But sufficiently large numbers of scientists remain to argue the reverse.

In New Zealand they include such luminaries as Dr Vincent Gray, of Wellington, an expert reviewer for the IPCC and most recently a visiting scholar at the Beijing Climate Centre; Dr Gerrit van der Lingen, of Christchurch, geologist, paleoclimatologist and former director of Geoscience Research and Investigations New Zealand; Professor Augie Auer, of Auckland, past professor of atmospheric science, University of Wyoming, and previously MetService chief meteorologist; Professor Bob Carter, a New Zealand-trained geologist with extensive research experience in palaeoclimatology, now at the Marine Geophysical Laboratory, James Cook University, Queensland; Warwick Hughes, a New Zealand earth scientist living in Pert; and Roger Dewhurst, of Katikati, a consulting environmental geologist and hydrogeologist.

As leaders of the New Zealand Climate Science Coalition they have formulated seven "pillars of wisdom".

Purely in the interest of bringing balance to this debate, here they are:

1. Over the past few thousand years, the climate in many parts of the world has been warmer and cooler than it is now. Civilisations and cultures flourished in the warmer periods.

2. A major driver of climate change is variability in solar effects, such as sunspot cycles, the sun's magnetic field and solar particles.

These may account in great part for climate change during the past century. Evidence suggests warming involving increased carbon dioxide exerts only a minor influence.

3. Since 1998, global temperature has not increased. Projection of solar cycles suggests that cooling could set in and continue to about 2030.

4. Most recent climate and weather events are not unusual; they occur regularly.

For example, in the 1930s the Arctic experienced higher temperatures and had less ice than now.

5. Stories of impending climate disaster are based almost entirely on global climate models.

Not one of these models has shown that it can reliably predict future climate.

6. The Kyoto Protocol, if fully implemented, would make no measurable difference to world temperatures.

The trillions of dollars that it will cost would be far better spent on solving known problems such as the provision of clean water, reducing air pollution and fighting malaria and Aids.

7. Climate is constantly changing and the future will include coolings, warmings, floods, droughts and storms.

The best policy is to make sure we have in place disaster response plans that can deal with weather extremes and can react adaptively to longer-term climate cooling and warming trends.

Posted by: Lorraine at April 6, 2007 4:29 PM

This huge global warming - climate change - hysteria is out of control. As earlier commentators suggested - it has become a vested interest - politicos/mediamighties/superscientists/etc. have to save face - big money has already been spent on this stuff.

The delayed IPCC technical report (supposedly delayed by the US, India and China according to the BBC - which is a not so thinly veiled shot at the US - and conjecture I might add) is due out shortly.

Let's see the real evidence and the real data.

If there really is a groundswell of opposition amounst scientists ,which is the most likely reason for the IPCC technical report delay, then they need to band together as a group and present their case - that is how you have to battle this stuff.

(The thing that bothers me is that this IPCC stuff is probably funded by the US - because they fund most of the UN.)

Is the earth warming? - probably - you can measure this easily.
Is there more CO2 in the troposphere? - probably - again easy to measure.
Why? - we haven't got a clue as to why - let alone predicting what's going to happen in 50 years - lets see the real evidence.

Yes, it is a moral issue.

It is the global warmengers who are immoral in their slight of logic, rhetoric and abuse of science.

Kate et al,

I must point out to you the self-interest that the government bureaucrats have in all this by a personal story.

In the early '90s, I was working on satellite image display technology, as a contractor, consultant, for what is now environment canada. When, after much effort and delay and overcoming technical problems, we delivered, the government project manager was not interested, the delivery was confined to the basement. We still got paid though, because we had delivered.

The reason was that, to paraphrase this enviro bureaucrat: "Our focus is now on global climate change". Through the IPCC, etc.

They knew where the next motherlode of money was coming from - a good scare scam. Global Warming.

AKA Global Fearing.

It was clear to me at the time that this project manager guy had figured out where to put his effort for further money.

These people say if you are against global warming, you are in the pay of Big Oil. However, it is those in favour of Global Warming that are in the pay of Big Government.

A real offset would be more CO2 for more Oxygen

Carbon "Offsets" means that you will pay money to some environmental clearing house, to buy off whatever guilt you may be suffering for living like Al Gore or David Suzuki.

A better term for this activity would be "Carbon Penances" or forgiveness for being alive on planet Earth.

This will do ZERO to clean up the environment. It will make guys like Al Gore rich since he owns the leading environment clearing house himself. The hypocrisy boggles the mind. There businesses popping up everywhere to cash in on this stupidity.

What will lead to a clean up of our environment is to reduce the real toxins and pollution that cause health problems in our society which are being belched from smoke stacks all over the planet mostly to provide electrical power and produce consumer products ... Hellooo?

CO2 is plant food and that is what is being targeted. This is lunacy! We need more CO2 to help plants grow bigger and faster so they can produce more Oxygen so we can breath easier. That would amount to a real offset ... more CO2 for more Oxygen.

Carbon offsets are not offsetting anything but personal guilt. This plan is about appeasement to the self. It is no different than a Catholic going to confession, tossing a few twenties in the basket and having the priest forgive him, then going out and doing more of the same. When you can simply buy forgiveness, why bother changing anything?

This environmental (emphasis on 'mental') movement may leave most of us as money-free as it will guilt-free. What will the environment matter if you cannot afford to eat?

There is no big problem with our environment other than it needs a good clean up and a change from coal fired to nuclear energy. Plus, a lot more research into alternate sources and methods of generating power.

The global warming part of it is not our problem since it is the sun and earth going about their business as they would with or without us around to capitalize or go broke on it.

Yoop, that’s quite a list of celebrities you’ve assembled. Not a credible scientific qualification in the bunch. They are puppets using their well-known names to focus attention to a problem and I suspect simply mouthing the words from a script. I'm sure a person like Johnny Depp has someone in the know writing the stuff for him.
I also hope they are giving of their time to the cause and not expecting pay for the use of their names for a global problem. That would certainly put a question mark on their sincerity. Do you happen to find out if they were paid for their time in your search of information on these people?
To be honest I have not heard what any of them are saying about climate, so I can't tell whether or not what they are saying is fact or fiction. All I can say is good on them if by using their names they can spread the message, as long as the message they are spreading is true.
But come to think of it, they are all just as credible as Tim Ball. Now there’s a guy who get paid to spread his message. Paid by oil companies.

There was an interesting column, "We want Free Kyoto" by Licia Corbella in the April 4th edition of the Calgary Sun regarding Kyoto.

We want free Kyoto

The premise of it was that Canadians were all for Kyoto, as long as it was not them doing the sacrificing.

An excerpt:

The Angus Reid Strategies poll released yesterday found 64% of Canadians believe Canada should live up to its Kyoto commitment, which involves cutting greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) to 6% below 1990 levels.

But when asked if they'd be willing to pay an additional 25c per litre tax on gasoline to help reach that goal, a whopping 71% of Canadians opposed this policy.

Posted by: Tony at April 7, 2007 5:22 PM

Be interesting if Angus Reid asked us if we would buy an EV with a limited range of 50 or 100 miles with a $4,000 rebate. No gas to buy ever!

Ideal for those who work near home.

Never fly for those who risk their lives twice daily on the freeway. You know,.. the smart ones. = TG

Nope. Both receive funding from sources that wish to prove their side of the issue.

One refuses to debate, even though he claims the science is overwhelmingly on his side.*

*Yes, I know, you'll claim that David Suzuki doesn't have to debate Ball or Lomborg or anyone else because they lack scientific credibility. Yes, I know you'll ignore the part where it's pointed out that Suzuki's credentials are just as debatable as anyone else's, because that's the way you roll in these debates. Pronounce, Exaggerate, Discredit, Mock, and Leave. Go back to class, Alby -- I think the professor is taking attendance.

Posted by: Yukon Gold at April 7, 2007 7:02 PM

Ok Yukon Gold, so who is this other source of cash you are talking about, if not Encana? Suzuki hasn't changed his message in years and I remember him warning about the problems of a warming earth in the early ninties. So if this funding you are talking about was supposed to influence what he's saying, then it has to predate when he started talking about it.

Posted by: albatros39a at April 7, 2007 7:43 PM

Er, "Fake but moral"?

Posted by: Me No Dhimmi at April 7, 2007 8:03 PM

Tony. You can be sure Layton and Dion will present Kyoto as cost free; indeed we will make big green profits.

I'm also sick of the Albatross garbage of maligning anyone who dares question the moral imperative of combatting climate change. The double standard is frightening.

Suzuki can collect donations from energy companies, Gore can ride his hoax of a movie to the US presidency; but, oh God, Tim Ball receives money from oil campanies.

Suddenly, the methodology of proponents' science isn't the issue, it's some moral issue of stopping big, bad oil, while letting the earth go to hell in the swill of pollution, AIDS, malaria, and deforestation.

Sheesh, from a theory to a reality to a crisis to a moral requirement.

Spare me. The worsening of the crisis is in direct proportion to the next IPCC summary, followed later, of course, by the scientific evidence.

Of course, by all means, its OK for China and India to pollute AND emit. Of course, let's fine Canada for not getting rid of its 2% emissions of this minor greenhouse gas.

We have to show leadership, like we did in Afghanistan? The only problem with this NDP argument is that these dodos don't agree with Afghanistan.

Logic is not the order of the day on either side of this debate frankly, and I don't trust either to be environmentally productive.

Don't argue Kyoto will be profitable, that's all. Be honest.

Oh yeah, it's Dubya's fault.

Shamrock, Bang on with your comments.
Albatross is the typical leftist born into upper class elitists who loathes his himself and others like him for having so much so easily. However, this type of personality will never give up their cushy life style because he has no clue how a comfortable life style was created in the first place and to do it on his own is too scary.
Depending on how much money mommy and daddy has he will search for meaning in self-righteous causes that will ultimately deny developing countries from succeeding because he arrogantly thinks he knows what right for them.
The only hope for this type of personality to see the light is if mommy daddy's money runs out and learns first hand that wealth is not a bad thing and those that create wealth are usually the first to help. (Leftist are usually cheap because they expect government to pay for everything.)
However, if he doesn't learn these lessons he will become the poor of this country and those from developing countries worst enemy.
People like him will work to burden industry and developing countries with ridiculous and harmful restrictions that crush economies and that ultimately keep the poor exactly where they are.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions and when the intentions are like those of Albatross's and Gore's the road to hell is that much faster it becomes a hard push off a steep cliff.

It doesn't really matter what albatros's real age is. He's what I call an "adult toddler": I coined that phrase about eight years ago when I noticed how many entitled, immature, unprincipled, generally ignorant (education has nothing to do with it) adults I seemed to be working with and meeting in my job.

These people are full of themselves and, like toddlers, have very little self-control. In administration, they're the incompetent ones who do their job very poorly--Rubrics? What rubrics? I don't acknowledge those.--while harrassing, bullying, and undermining their hardworking staff, whom they beat over the head with every rubric going. They're the parents who park across the entrance to the parking lot "because there wasn't any place else" or answer their cell phone during an interview without a by-your-leave. These people are ME-ME-ME, "Don't confuse me with the facts" all the time. They make a big deal of "tolerance" and fairness, except for themselves.

Albatros seems to fit the bill. So, no matter what his chronological age, he seems to be stuck in an arrested state of development. A society can function with a few of these individuals, but we're now churning them out at an alarming rate. Too bad for them. Too bad for all of us.

So instead of being upper middle clas he is middle class. This personality is still the poor of this country and the developing world's worst enemy because he supports the fruit fly guy and Gore's plan to stiffle ecomonmic growth for little or no gain.
