The reports on daycare don't reveal anything that is really new. Old school had mom staying at home and raising the younguns. Chances are that grandma & grandpa were also involved. A bonus having an extended family. Yes, things do change and you might have to get a sitter while you went to work but the sitter often came to your house or it was a neighbour who had a pile of kids that yours played with anyway. Fast forward to today where you take your child to the kiddy factory to be molded and shaped by strangers with the hundred other little minds.

Now the question: Do you sink a whole bunch of money into daycare with it's documented shortcomings or do you make it less of a financial burden to stay at home to raise your children during those formative years?

A dollar a hit:

Hey, how about this story financial malfeasance at the highest levels of the RCMP.

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2007/03/28/rcmp-allegations.html

A parliamentary committee has heard stunning allegations of fraud, abuse and a coverup at senior levels in the RCMP from those who wear the uniform.

Appearing before MPs on the public accounts committee Wednesday, several serving and retired RCMP officers delivered a scathing indictment of their leadership over the handling of fraud and abuse allegations involving the Mounties' pension and insurance plans in 2002.

RCMP Chief Supt. Fraser Macaulay was among several officers who levelled accusations Wednesday during a parliamentary committee hearing. RCMP Chief Supt. Fraser Macaulay was among several officers who levelled accusations Wednesday during a parliamentary committee hearing.
(CBC)

"The RCMP has had a small group of managers who through their actions and inactions are responsible for serious breaches in our core values, the RCMP code of conduct and even the Criminal Code," Chief Supt. Fraser Macaulay told the committee.

...

"Every core value and rule of ethical conduct that I held to be true and dear as a rank-and-file member of the RCMP has been decimated and defiled by employees at the highest levels of the RCMP," Sgt. Steve Walker told the committee Wednesday.

...

The officers testified that they felt stonewalled by more than one senior executive when they tried to raise the issues with the leadership.

Macaulay said he was told "I was on an island by myself."

Now-retired staff sergeant Ron Lewis alleged his own queries were being blocked by the man who held the top job.

"I was met with inaction, delays, roadblocks, obstruction and lies," Lewis told the committee, alleging that "the person who orchestrated most of this coverup was Commissioner Zaccardelli."

Members of the committee expressed their shock over the allegations.

"I'm a lawyer and I think a lot of the stuff I've heard, you know, if it was anyone else, they'd be in criminal court.… Some of them may have been packing their toothbrushes for the crowbar hotel visit," Conservative MP Brian Fitzpatrick said.

"It's like Watergate," Liberal MP Shawn Murphy said. "The coverup is worse than the crime."

Barb George, the RCMP's deputy commissioner in charge of human resources, has stepped down from the position, but remains a member of the force, CBC News has learned.

The public accounts committee is holding an emergency meeting Thursday about Wednesday's testimony, and is considering summoning senior RCMP executives —including Zaccardelli himself — to testify.

FIVE MILLION

Not from a publicly known person with major backroom connections to a major political party.

Not from a life long journalist with major exposure by way of major media outlets and our state run "news" organization.

Not from one with the backing from centuries old media corporations.

Nope. From someone in small town Canada in the 'new media' who just happens to have the following characteristics.

Very intelligent.
Ability to see the news as it is.
Presents the topics without spin or bias.
Allows comments.
Allows dissenting comments.
Works hard.
Sees scams, hoaxes, flakes, hippies, political hacks, scandals, cults for exactaly what they are. Scams, hoaxes, flakes, hippies, political hacks, scandals and cults.

An example of why sda is a lot more relevant to Canadians than other so-called 'heavy weights'.

The Quebec election was arguably one of the biggest slap-downs of the LPC/Media propaganda machine in recent history.

Polls "missed" the ADQ strength.
Quebecers no longer buy into the centrist idea of Big Ottawa any longer.
Adscam is still fresh in the minds of Quebecers (and all Canadians) and are not buying the story that the Chretienites didn't know what was going on.
The Green Party failed miserably despite wall to wall propaganda by the media on the Kyoto(ad)scam.

From the get-go Kate was on top of the 'relavancy' of what happened at the polls in Quebec. Check the sda archives.

With respect, Andrew Coyne's blog commenters were mostly against him. Cannot check his archives though. Mysteriously disappeared.

With respect, Warren Kinsella (who does not allow comments by the way) had a mushy post about good and bads for leaders. And ?? But nothing on the PMO, as friendly dictator, power slap-down. Also rambles about how HE should be allowed into the Rideau Club without proper dress because HE was giving the speech. HE also could not tell the difference in scruples between helping McGuinty cover-up the lottery scandal and helping John Tory in a Toronto Mayor bid.

A success story (#1 blog in Canada) like sda could have happened somewhere, sometime, anytime after the printing press was invented. The Media has had control over our lives, especially political lives, ever since. No longer, not with the Kates of the world pointing out, and allowing others to point out, the Pravda-ness of it all.

Lorrie Goldstein's rebutle to John Ibbitson's typical 'media-will-tell-ya-how-you-all-should-conduct-our-lives' is BANG-ON !!

"..John, why do you and so many of your colleagues have your heads stuck up your butts about the real stresses immigration puts on a society? Why are you so quick to shout "intolerance!" when Canadians anywhere express understandable frustrations about half-baked policies they don't understand, developed by insulated mandarins and opportunistic politicians who, rather than rationally defend them, scream "intolerance!" at anyone who voices unease? Maybe they don't always say it well. Maybe they're not as worldly as you. Tough. Are there some racists in the ADQ? Duh. There's racists in every party. What's your point?

I started by saying if Dumont wants to know what the ADQ is in for from the national media, to read Ibbitson's columm. It suggests a wider, sneering attitude about the ADQ, similar to what they used to think about the Alberta-based Reform party. Mr. Dumont, tell your backbenchers in the Quebec National Assembly not to answer any "hypothetical" media questions about immigration. Because there's nothing as scary as a scrum of parliamentary journalists who imagine themselves to be on a crusade exposing the bigotry of others." Lorrie Goldstein, Toronto Sun.

Journalist, prostitute, what’s the diff?

This is a semi-weird one. Five members of the men’s Czech national soccer team were found in their hotel room with an equal number of prostitutes. The teammates say they snuck the girls into their room by telling team officials the girls were “autograph hunters.”

A female journalist broke the story. She said she herself got a peek into the room by posing as an “autograph hunter.” What a coincidence!

But here’s the kicker: the Czechs lost the Euro 2008 qualifier to Germany. But the Czech federation called what the players were doing a “celebration:”

'Because the celebration was conducted in an inappropriate way, which does not fall in line with the behaviour of Czech Republic national team members, the whole team was punished by a one-million-crown fine,' the Czech FA said in a statement.

Imagine if they had won the game!

Conservative member Scott Reid put a question of privilege before the House this afternoon re the boxes stolen by Holland and Jennings. Those boxes were labeled and dated and certainly did not have anything to do with Liberal business.

MR. SPEAKER will look into the matter and get back to the House in due course.
Due course will give Holland and Jennings ample time to make up a good reason for their serious breach of ethics and trust.

The real kicker here is the Speaker's staff could have been negligent in not delivering the boxes, it's their job!

The latest, latest, really latest poll(Angus Reid), has Tories at 39%, with Grits at 22%. Who cares where NDP (essentially sitting out this one because HofC debate too rough) and Green are.

Libs at 22%. While we can't be sure where Tories and Libs actually are (essentially it doesn't matter, because election soon), this number may represent the bottom end of their support. How could it go lower?

On the other hand, Dion in an election campaign is shaping up as disaster for Grits, especially during debate. Hard to see how they can grow their vote, save some gaffe or very bad day in Afghanistan. I know this, Harper cannot get majority until he calls election. Since Grits unlikely to go lower in support (unless Dion disaster I think he will be), Tories might as well go now, and I think they will.

What about the negatives of engineering their own defeat? I offer two points - first, who cares, it didn't hurt them last election, like the MSM said it would. Second, the Tories have an issue to go to the people - the Clean Air Act. The opposition has amended it into a Kyoto love-in, complete with carbon taxes and credits. Canadians will love this one, you know, the ones who aren't willing to shorten their showers to combat global warming.

It's hard to believe the Tories not calling election after Easter Break. The stars are aligning, so the temptation will probably be too great.

Kate: Do you ever think about what the 5 million visits have done to the national debt?

If 50% of those were made during working hours and each visit lasts 30 minutes - then 1.25 million working hours have been lost due to you.

If each of these hours is worth $40.00 in lost productivity and/or profit to the employers' bottom line then you are personally responsible for $43,750,000 in lost profits. The income tax due on this amount at 30% would be $13,125,000 to the federal and provincial governments.

Congradulations Kate on costing the taxpayers of this country over 13 million dollars.

Who Is Stephane Dion's Speech Writer?

Who is Laura Bogomolny's Boyfriend?
From Laura's Blog:

Thu. 8 Mar., 2007
Stephane Dion

Liberal Leader Stephane Dion addressed a packed house at the Chateau Laurier this afternoon. Over butternut squash soup and roasted halibut, he told Canadian Club of Ottawa members how he would govern our country if he were Prime Minister. Focusing on economic policy (he discussed social justice during a speech out East last week), Dion argued for a more competitive tax regime, investment in international trade initiatives, and support for research, development, and post-secondary education.

The crowd was enthusiastic, responding with hearty applause to Dion's vision for Canada's future.

Along with Dion at the head table sat MPs John McCallum, Navdeep Bains and David McGuinty, as well as senator Celine Hervieux-Payette and Dion's wife Janine Krieber. Audience members included Bob Rae, Martha Hall Findlay, and Gerard Kennedy.

While I'm keenly interested in national politics, I had a personal tie to the event too, since my boyfriend is Dion's speechwriter.

During the lunch, I sat with representatives from the Canadian Medical Association and the Canadian Real Estate Association. When we sang "Oh Canada" at the end of the program, I felt pangs of national pride.

Newt’s got a plan and it sounds good to me (even though Kooki Suzuki would like the idea of ox carts).

“I think there are two very simple steps that should be taken.

The first is to use a covert operation or a special forces operation to knock out the only gasoline producing refinery in Iran. There’s only one.

And the second is to simply intercede by naval force, and block any tankers from bringing gasoline to Iran…

I would right now say to them privately, within the next week, your refinery will no longer work. And within the following week, there will be no tankers arriving. Now if you would like to avoid being humiliated publicly, we recommend you calmly and quietly give them back now. But frankly, if you’d prefer to show the planet that you’re tiny and we’re not, we’re prepared to simply cut off your economy, and allow you to go back to walking

and using oxen to pull carts, because you will have no gasoline left.”

I think that you hit the nail right on the head with the political budget power corrupting. I remember when Cretin took RCMP officers into the personal residence of the manager of the bank involved in the Golf Course Scandal. Liberal leader gets kisses from Facebook friends
Written by Claire Biddiscombe Carleton University Newspaper the Charlaton
Thursday, 08 March 2007
Liberal Party leader StÈphane Dion made 1,500 friends just six weeks after he created an account on Facebook.

He received 13 gifts, including kisses and puppies dubbed “Kyoto Jr,” and more than 200 users posted on his wall. He posted an event, some bookmarks and two notes.

Even though Dion’s staff run the day-to-day workings of his account, some of its members said the federal Liberal leader himself has become fully integrated into the world of Facebook.

Facebook users are now able to poke Stephane Dion from the comfort of their homes. (HEATHER MONTGOMERY)“He actually really enjoys it,” said Elizabeth Whiting, a spokesperson for Dion. “He loves to go on and see what people are saying and so on.”

Facebook is a social networking website that allows users to post information about themselves, connect with other people and join common interest groups.

Dion’s younger communications staff suggested he open the account, said Tait Simpson, another Liberal Party spokesperson.

“[The staffers] thought it would be a useful tool to outreach, specifically to young mobile voters,” he said.

Dion is not the only politician to join in the Facebook frenzy. Liberal MP Carolyn Bennett and Mark Holland also have accounts, as does Prime Minister Stephen Harper. The latter politician’s account recently boasted approximately 375 friends.

The Conservative Party office did not responded to requests for comment on Harper’s account.

Doug Bastien, a graduate student in public management and governance at the University of Ottawa, said politicians using Facebook to communicate with voters is not surprising.

“It’s opportunistic,” Bastien wrote in an e-mail interview. “Politicians will focus all their best efforts to reach their base and find new low-cost ways to do it.”

“But [Dion’s] commitment is great - he, or his handlers, are really using the medium well,” he wrote. “They know the tools, they know the impact and Dion is interacting better than expected.”

Many thanks, Kate, for saving my sanity over the past year. You've got a Ceilidh going for Canadians who are tired of the pc crap!

Thanks for the post on the problems that institutional daycare inflicts on far too many of our kids. Here's a comment I made on Angry in the Great White North earlier today. It's just common sense, really:

No one wants to hear the message that there is absolutely no substitute for a parent ('could be Dad, but it's usually Mom because, as Robert Capon puts it in his book "Bed and Board," mom's "are geography" for their kids; they have breasts for food and to use as pillows and shelves, aka hips, to carry their children around on).

One psychologist put it very well: "Every child needs someone taking care of them who is absolutely crazy about them." Who but a parent--flesh of my flesh, bone of my bone, quirk of my quirks--is going to be "crazy about" a kid? Daycare workers have too many kids to care for, which means that two-, three-, and four-year-olds are becoming "peer oriented" at very early ages. That essentially means that they don't "hear" or respond to an adult voice. I see it in the classrooms I teach in every day. They also hear only a very limited vocabulary from their tiny peers, which is one reason why so many of our children are literacy challenged. No amount of remedial literacy work with them, after the deprivation in the first six years of their lives, is going to help them over the hump, another fact I witness every day.

The gazillion$ of dollars we're spending on remedial and therapeutic programs and strategies for our underperforming children would be much better spent on encouraging parents to stay home with their children for the first six years of their lives, to engage them one-on-one in the learning process.

There's no way around it: Our children need far more attention from their parents than they're getting at present. 'Not a very palatable message in North America, but if we refuse to diagnose the problem no amount of bandaids and therapeutic/remedial help is going to cure what's ailing our children--and, by extension, our society.

The great irony is, that there have never been so many therapeutic/remedial helpers in our schools than there are today: special ed teachers, social workers, anger management therapists, dieticians, psychologists, and the list goes on and on. And yet, despite all of this help, there seems to be no upward swing of successes for our children. The mire just seems to deepen, and teachers are being driven to the limit of their resources to know how to accommodate such a great number of challenged children.

Thank you Kate, and thank you to all the commentors that contribute to the Number One Blog Site in the world. Ya that's it...the Whole Wide World. All opinions are allowed which is a breath of fresh air. Of course we don't all agree with each other; boring if we did. All the best looking ahead Kate!
Question though...who out there understands why SDA(and a few others)are blocked from many worksites? Specifically Calgary.

OMMAG,8:25pm. Evan Sayet on what makes LLLLiberalism tick.

Liberal "thought" seems to focus on indiscrimination. That there can be absolutely no discrimination in society. None. Zero.

Most reasonable people would think that, yes, we should not make judgements on sex, color, height, accent, need, past life, ect.

But as often happens in a lot of organizations, the compassionate type of liberalism got hyjacked by the fanatics. Just as the fanatics took over the environmental movement.

The libs wail that it doesn't matter if the lifelong hippy fried his brains on cocain, broke every bone in his body by bungee jumping, quit in grade six and did not worked an honest day in his/her life, protested and vandalized $millions in property and then claims society should look after him. Nice.

And the true latte crowd Lib type thinks we should not discriminate by allowing a, say, doctor who has worked his butt off all his life, to have even the slightest health care advantage.

Or the carpenter, who has built his and other's houses in the cold, heat and rain, should also provide low cost or even no cost housing to the "free-spirit" type. Even though he/her sat in the shade all his life. Maybe even disrupted the carpenter (logging protest)from doing his work.

Teachers are not supposed to "discriminate" against the mean, disruptive kid in grade 5 who takes advantage of the meeker types. Intimination and peer preesure ruin many innocent kid's lives.

Yep, a Utopia with no values or responsibilities or rules. Nice. But it would break down in a minute.

The Globe and Mail is onto Danny Millions:

If Newfoundland opts to stay with the equalization formula that it has -- and Mr. Flaherty has allowed such a choice -- its fiscal capacity could continue to exceed the capacity of many of its fellow provinces for the duration of the deal, to 2011-12.

And that is not the end of Newfoundland's good fortune.

The accord continues for another eight years so long as Newfoundland's per-capita debt-servicing charges are not lower than those in at least four other provinces and as long as it still qualifies for equalization (minus the inclusion of resource revenues, of course!).

Something is wrong with this picture.

Newfoundland spent $8,567 per capita on program expenditures such as health in 2005-06.

Ontario, which could not afford middle-class tax cuts in this week's budget, spent only $5,975 per person -- the lowest among the 10 provinces -- during the same period.

Newfoundland's debt charges are roughly three times the provincial average, so the accord is likely to remain in force until 2019-20. It is hard to see in what way the province has been shortchanged.

Mr. Williams says the federal budget marks "a very sad day for this federation." In fact, Newfoundland is the big winner in the equalization sweepstakes. Either Mr. Williams does not understand the arithmetic or he is playing his usual politics with the federation.

Several months ago, PMPM said he knew nothing about Adscam, several liberal ministers did not know anything. Bisson didn't know anything. There was talk that several thousand dollars ended up in rcmp coffers. No one knew anything. Stuff had been going on for 13 yrs and chretain, martin, bisson etc knew nothing. And, liberal voters in toronto, vancouver and montreal beieved them. Now, PMSH has been in office a little over a year. RCMP are being investigated. Stuff dates back to pre Harper. But, the liberals expect the conservatives to know everything, and can't believe they knew nothing. Does Dion know how much credit he is giving the PM for being so intelligent that he knows everything about every activity of every employee of the federal government. Better give that man a majority.
By insinuating the conservatives are so smart and know everything, are the libs not telling cdns that they were very dumb not to see what was going on, unless of course, they were behind it.
The libs still blame the rcmp for their loss, and will do everything to discredit them. The good thing is that more lib scandal will be revealed, just in time for an election.

Reid pointed to Shapiro*s resignation and the link at 5:21 above.

That is worth looking at.

OTTAWA — Federal ethics commissioner Bernard Shapiro, who clashed with Prime Minister Stephen Harper over how to investigate political wrongdoing, tendered his resignation Thursday.

The reasons for Shapiro's departure were not clear Thursday evening.

Kate et al, shouldn't we get the statisticians working away on solving the statistics problem that has been demonstrated this week by competing pollsters? Angus-Reid's poll shows a 17 point lead for the Conservatives while the Ipsos-Reid poll shows only a 5 point lead.

Funny. Don't they both say things like "...accurate to plus or minus 2% 19 times out of 20..."?

I wonder what the problem could be......... ;)

News flash: The Dionsky Code - broken and translated:

"I will fight this election whenever it comes and I will fight hard. Canadians will know who I am and what I stand for and they will know what Mr. Harper's regime will do to this country -- the smallness of ideology, the meanness of spirit, the inability to understand the enormity of Canada's future."

"Canadians will know who I am and what I stand for" - They have no idea who I am or what I stand for.

The "smallness of ideology" - He's not a Marxist, like me, seeking big government solutions every time.

The "meanness of spirit" - He actually responds, in kind, when smeared by me or my "rat pack."

The "inability to understand the enormity of Canada's future" - He refuses to enact giant, bloated government programs like Day Care, Carbon trading or screwing the oil industry.

Of course, the truth is the above statements by Dionsky say nothing, they are just rhetoric. The quest for power alone is their raison d'etre. That's who he is; that's what he stands for.

Some speech. Some barnburner. Harper will mop the floor with this guy in the next elecion.

Jose..., eh? ...-

The Honeymoon is over
[...]
It seems that local Halton Liberals (the ones who were pushed out of the riding association when the weasels team moved in) are not too happy and one of those people I was told ... was a former candidate for the nomination of the Halton FLA....Jose. [...]

NOW he has a video and text of Dions most recent speech. Oddly enough, anti Dion comments are showing up more and more and NO editorial weasel comments can be found.

Hes letting them go through when in the past he's edited them or attacked the posters as Dion Deniers.

The honeymoon is over...." [...]
The word is Garth is spending money like water, money that he had no hand in raising (guys like Jose and others broke their back to fundraise) and he has absolutely no plans to raise them.

Halton Liberals are having problems...Federal Liberals are saying "Why did we do it?" And Garth is just spending his way to the next election.

Good job!!!

Is Citoyen Dion a misogynist?
To parapharse Parrish: Get lost, Gloria. Mange ...
...-

Coun. Gloria Kovach says she plans to seek legal advice related to her ouster as president of the Canadian Federation of Municipalities, which she charges was caused by Liberal leader Stephane Dion. ...- via national newswatch ...-

Kovach Ouster Has Her Seeking Legal Advice [...]
She said the trouble began soon afterwards when she met with Dion for prebudget discussions. With her at that meeting, her first with the new Liberal leader, was FCM first vice-president Gord Steeves of Winnipeg.

Dion "was not very engaging. He did not have a lot to say to us," Kovach said.

Soon afterwards, FCM staff told her that Dion had contacted FCM and the Big City Mayors Caucus "to say he would not deal with FCM with me as president," she said in an interview Wednesday.

"From there it started a spiral: What do we do? Dion's not happy," she said.

She said she agreed to take a short-term leave of absence, with the situation to be re-examined after the Conservative nomination meeting here on March 20.

"It was just the most bizarre turn of events . . . they just removed me as president," Kovach said about a March 21 conference call in which she was replaced by Steeves as FCM president. ...-

What is Chretain afraid of, that maybe a new inquiry will be called with the ability to lay criminal charges. I wonder how many of those that thought Gomery cleared all those libs realize that he was not allowed to find criminal activity. Press said gomery could not find, and cdns thought that meant there was none. All in the wording.
