Palestinian News Network, March 28;
At the end of 1997, the PNA evicted some residents from Sa'ad El-Ansari area to the area adjacent to the sewage disposal pools in the area. Today, the area is known as Um El-Naser Village. At the time, PCHR expressed serious concern over the lives of these civilians as a result of the health risks posed by these pools, including stench, insects, and contamination of underground water resources. The Centre also warned of the possibility of flooding. The project of transferring these sewage pools to the east of Gaza City was delayed for more than two years due to delays in importing pipes and pumps from abroad as a result of the closure imposed by IOF on the Gaza Strip. In addition, IOF military operations in the project area prevented workers from free and safe access to the area to conduct their work. It is noted that this project is funded by the World Bank, European Commission, Sweden, and other donors.
"Israeli metal used for Kassam rockets" - Jerusalem Post, March 3, 2007
It took seven years, but the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) has finally put a stop to one of the more ironic aspects on Israel's war on terror: Kassam rockets made of Israeli metal.A Palestinian from the Gaza Strip who worked as a metal merchant at the Karni crossing between Israel and the Strip was arrested by the Shin Bet last month for allegedly selling pipes he bought in Israel to terrorist groups that used them to manufacture Kassams, it was released for publication on Sunday.
On February 9, the Shin Bet arrested Amar Azk, 37. During his interrogation, he confessed selling the pipes to Hamas and other terrorist organizations that manufactured Kassam rockets, fired almost daily at Israel. The Shin Bet said Azk's activities began with the start of the second intifada in 2000 and were only brought to a halt by his arrest. The agency could not say how much metal Azk traded, except that it was "significant."
The pipes that were sold to Zak were intended for the construction of a sewage system in Gaza. The Shin Bet has been unable to determine the amount of metal that actually made its way to the terror organizations, and how much went to the sewage project.

I thought Bush was to blame. It's the same old dance that we have heard many times before and frankly I am getting a bit tired of it. Food for oil and a host of other humanitarian style programs only put money and resources into the hands of the people responsible for most of the problem anyhow. The UN are masters of this useless feel good endevour. Can you imagine what a state Africa would be in if ALL the money got to where it was intended? Bono would have to sing for his food again.
Posted by: Texas Canuck at March 29, 2007 8:08 AMIs there no way to work Harper and conservatism into the blame-scape here? We note he has not made profuse public apologies to the radical campus antisemetic element over this disaster so I guess he is culpable in a way. We can assume that if he didn't do it directly, he at least was hoping it would happen because he is silent on the matter. :-)

Seriously though, could this have happened to a nicer bunch?

It is always best to avoid sh*tstorms, both real and political.
No sewage pipes and KASSAM!! Amar's your uncle.
It is a tragedy that 5 people had to die because a few had sh*t for brains.
use of night soil and natural fertilizers has been advocated by none other than Dr. Bono Suzuki as part of sustainable agriculture.this sewage will make the desert bloom. you reek what you sew.
this part off topic- but its verbal diarreha from the periennial CBCpravda favourite Fidel - an antiamerica rant that they love yet oddly against their current biofuel slant.

My dad was a plumber, and he said as an apprentice he was taught two things:
1) shite flows downhill.
2) payday is on Friday.
Mark Steyn always says of the Pals that if they really wanted a state of their own they'd start doing the things that states do, such as policing, garbage removal, education, etc.
But given the choice between managing their sewage or killing Jews, the Pals chose the latter. As Charles Johnson always says " let's give them a state of their own."
Posted by: Mississauga Matt at March 29, 2007 9:49 AMA case of "sh*t hitting the dam as opposed to hitting the "fan" eh?
Could it be the Pals will better utilize the metal for sewage disposal material in the future rather than making rockets to kill Israelis.

I can just see the T-shirt now.
Regarding the pipe diversion: what a unique way to *return* something under the warranty agreement.

No. The pipe is defective. It tends to fragment upon impact at terminal velocities.
That's amazing. A shit tsunami kills five Palies because Hammas is firing the sewer pipes over the fence at the Jews. Let's boycott Israel!!!
But the question that remains is, who builds a sewage lagoon UP HILL from a town? Talk about shit for brains eh?
Posted by: The Phantom at March 29, 2007 10:14 AMI put this bit of humor up a couple of days ago regarding the shit tsunami in the Gaza Strip ... check it out.

I'm conviced that without intervention most Arab states would revert back to the Stone Age. The mentality is there. Israel was oh so right in getting that wall up.

Shit happens.
Posted by: Mad Mike at March 29, 2007 11:02 AMFor all the animosity around GWB, he can be a very humble and humorous guy. Last night (at press club I think), he reminisced about the good old days of a year ago: "this time last year, my approval was in the 30s, my supreme court nominee had withdrawn, and my vice president had just shot somebody." (paraphrased).
Too funny.
Posted by: Shamrock at March 29, 2007 11:30 AMThere are probably tears today in the Stefanie DeYawn Liberal spin machine....the thought of wasting so much good shite on a flood rather than focusing it on a liberal election campaign must be truly heart rendering for them.
Posted by: WL Mackenzie Redux at March 29, 2007 11:41 AMRather than waste their time and resources fighting with each other and Israelis, the Palestinians should have done something about their sewer system before something like this happened. They failed to, and now they're literally up &*(& creek. As far as I am concerned, they deserve it for their stupidity
Posted by: M1 Garand at March 29, 2007 11:44 AMGaza City's mayor, Majid Abu Ramadan, blamed the collapse on local people digging dirt from an earthen embankment around the structure and selling it to building contractors for NIS 300 a truckload.
Israel helps Palestinians curb sewage ...
Posted by: greenmamba at March 29, 2007 12:05 PMThey build a humongous sewage lagoon up hill from not one town but two... and then they undermine the dike so they can sell the dirt!!!
BWAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!!
It'd be even funnier if the stupid sons of the desert hadn't managed to kill a bunch of little kids.

Posted by: me no dhimmi at March 29, 2007 1:24 PMCongrats, Kate, you're the best. I was privileged, at my Rotary breakfast, to watch a video, "At War With War" with the real life "actors" present, one Palestinian, the other Israeli, talking about peace between their peoples.
When Natal first met Mujahed, he wondered if this Palestinian was mad at him; now he sees a "smile of victory."
You see, Natal and Mujahed are studying peace together in a university preparatory program; that's right, peace! While neither come from radicalized backrounds, there previously had been no common ground between them, just prejudice and suspicion.
We then saw a remarkable message, where a rock thrower faces a soldier, the rock is thrown and a shot is fired; except they "shot the rock." The young boy and the soldier then join in friendship.
Since they've met and studied together, Natal and Mujahed see each other as people, not sworn enemies who must be destroyed. Now they talk, study and work out together. They've shot the rock.
Sure, there's an asteroid out there to shoot, but maybe this is a start.
I think it's remarkable because these 18 year olds are the young men sent by the old to die in war. It's hard to kill someone with whom you share values and trust.
Mujahed calls the scene in his homeland "the most complicated conflict in the world" (yes, it is) and, "when you want peace, you don't talk to your friends, you talk to your enemies."
These the young men would rather hang out than fight, uninterested in propaganda and hatred.
Out of the mouths of babes. Can't we just hope a little bit, then clean up the s**t.?
Thought you might like to hear some good news.
Posted by: Shamrock at March 29, 2007 1:45 PMAh-h-h-h-h!
Thought you might like to hear some good news.
After scratching the surface of that too typical vacuous production piece you've described, the good news is about as thin as a Rotary Club paper napkin. If only life was as simple as a feel good slice-of-life production.
It's a friendship that can only endure past the innocence of age 18, if Mujahed eventually renounces the most basic core values of his flawed culture, religion and probably the attitudes of most of his extended family members. Does he really understand that at 18? I doubt it.

Gee, I wonder why was IOF operating in the area, surely it had nothing to do with several Quassam rockets that have been fired from there, right?
A fly in the coffee:
What happens when -
- An American finds a fly in the coffee? He throws it away and buy a new one.
- A British finds a fly in the coffee? He throws away the fly and drink the coffee.
- A Chinese finds a fly in the coffee? He throws away the coffee and eat the fly.
- A Japanese finds a fly in the coffee? He drinks the coffee and eat the fly as a bonus.
- An Israeli finds a fly in the coffee? He sells the coffee to the Brits, sells the fly to the Chinese and with the money he earned buy himself new coffee.
- A Palestinian finds a fly in the coffee? He blames the Israelis and then go to the UN and ask for a loan to buy new coffee. Then he goes to the EU and ask for money to compensate for the distress caused by the fly. Then he goes out and blows up the coffee shop where the American, the British, the Chinese and Japanese are sitting and trying to explain to the Israeli why it is wrong to put a fly in the coffee.
And some liberal doofues will blame GEORGE W. BUSH and GLOBAL WARMING becuase their dumber then a jackass
