"The CBC and Canadian nationalists are inevitably crying foul. They claim that the CTF's origins lay in a deal cooked up between the cable companies and the CRTC in the early 1990s under which the cable guys were allowed to soak consumers to fund capital expansion. In return they agreed to subsidize Canadian programming via a special fund, which became the CTF, into which Ottawa also kicks $100-million annually. The nationalist rationale thus seems to be that since the consumer got hosed by regulators, she should be twice hosed by having to pay for programs she doesn't want to see."

For your convenience: Ralph Goodale's contact info. It might be a good time to ask the good MP why his party supports the crippling of Saskatchewan's energy resource industry and power generation capacities through implementation of Kyoto. You might copy your correspondence to Lorne Calvert. It's time he said something for the record - SaskPower is the nation's #3 GHG emitter.

Steve Janke/AGWN has got a very interesting piece up about another tie-in between the oil industry and the LIEberal party; the wife of one of Goodale's "policy advisors" just happens to be both a LIEberal Party executive AND is currently working as a lobbyist for the oil industry; it makes one wonder which direction the little brown bags stuffed with cash are travelling, doesn't it?

Just read a few of the comments in the G&M re election. Seems the liberals are prepaed to blame Harper for the job losses in southern ont. and that is the area that elects a govt.
One comment was interesting. The opposition parties have painted themselves into a corner re Kyoto, leaving the anti kyoto voters all to the conservatives. When the facts are known, I think there are more anti-kyotoites than pro. Especially if you have a job, home, family etc.
One guy suggested if the vote is on a cold and snowy day, perhaps voters would stay home because of the heat from global warming.

I just sent this to Goodale. I know I won't get a response but it did feel good to write:

I am absolutely upset at all of the opposition parties for voting to implement Kyoto last night in the House of Commons. I am especially furious with you in particular.

Can you please explain to me your specific plan to get Saskatchewan on board with the targets by 2012? It is common knowledge that SaskPower is the nation's #3 worst emitter of greenhouse gas emissions and I'd like to know how many people would be unemployed and the impact to our economy if we are to make changes in this province.

I am certainly not proud that we are such a large contributor to this problem, however it is foolhardy to go blindly forward without thinking through the consequences. Is there enough money in the EI fund to help all the good folks that will be on the dole after this ill-conceived plan is implemented? And all this while your leaders (Dion, Mo Strong, et al) are unable to get the USA, China, or Russia on track as well. Add to this last week's denouncement of Kyoto from the president of the Czech Republic and we are seeing the beginning of a changing tide. If Canada dropped emissions to total zero we still would have no impact on a global perspective.

My only hope is a majority conservative government to restore some common sense on the Hill. I occasionally watch you in Question Period and can't help but wonder what it is you have in common with the people of Saskatchewan.

The only thing that makes me more perplexed is why your constituents continue to vote for you and your party. You seem like a nice guy, but I just don't think your party is on the right track on most initiatives.

I look forward to a reply that is more than a form letter from an assistant. Thanks for your time.

Did anyone catch the interview with Dr. Suzuki this morning on CTV Newsnet? To his credit, in speaking of the vote, he mentionned that yesterdays vote shouldn't not have even been an issue as Mr. Chretien ratified Kyoto so long ago.

However my issue was the fact that in questionning Dr. S, that no one asked how Kyoto could reduce GHGs....it's just taken as fact, no questions, no justifications.

If for example a debate raged on about legislation requiring that children be adopted by a man and a woman only because studies showed that children brought up in homes with parents of the opposite sex were more beneficial then the author of the statement would have to jump through hoops and be portrayed as a hate monger.

Aside: why is the Suzuki interview played when I'm trying to eat breakfast.....I'm starting to lose weight from missing breakfast so often.

Mister Speaker, I rise today to announce measures that my government must take to comply with Bill C288, otherwise known as the “Pablo Rodriguez Law of Unintended Consequences”.

In order to comply with the Bill and Kyoto, it is necessary to take some drastic measures to either reduce emissions ort buy credits from other signatory nations of the Kyoto Protocol who do not need to reduce their emission but get to sell these credits.

Canada got hosed at Kyoto. Jean Chretien’s Liberal government signed Canada to a treaty that means we must reduce our standard of living in order to comply. Bill 288 further obligates Canada to reduce its economy in order to comply and because of the way the Bill is worded, our Government must achieve the 2012 targets within 180 days of the Bill being granted Royal Ascent, so we must act NOW.

I am instructing a number of government department and agencies to enact the following emergency measure so that we can comply with the will of Parliament, or at least the Liberal, NDP and Bloc Quebecois parts of parliament.

Immediate shutdown of all coal fired power plants in Canada. We realize that this will hit Ontario very hard – 1/3 of Ontario’s electricity is coal generated, but look on the bright side, the lack of power will also cause the shutdown of thousands of plants and factories, throwing hundreds of thousands out of work. While we are it, we’ll close down all the top ten listed below:

Rank Company Name Province
1 Ontario Power Generation On
2 Transalta Utilities AB
3 Sask Power SK
4 Alberta Power Corp AB
5 Nova Scotia Power Inc NS
6 Syncrude Canada Ltd. AB
7 Suncor Energy inc. Oil Sands AB
8 EPCOR Generation Inc. AB
9 Petro-Canada AB
10 Dofasco Inc. On

Immediate shutdown of the entire Petroleum industry across Canada – we will need to import our oil but we are only going to import oil from countries that will sell us Kyoto Credits.

Immediately ban all wood burning fireplaces, charcoal and propane BBQ’s and summer campfires. All recreational vehicles and activities are deemed frivolous and will be banned. Sorry Bombardier, no more skidoos and water jet boats. We are investigating how to ban forest fires as well, but that has its challenges. No

A 30 cent per liter “GhG Kyoto credit buying Tax. Based on recent data that we use about 45 Billion liters of gasoline every year. This new tax revenue should provide enough money to both buy the $10 billion in foreign credits we need annually and make up for the billions in lost income taxes the Federal and Provincial governments will not collect by the 35% contraction of our economy we need to achieve

We ill not be able to afford generous EI support for all the laid off workers because the numbers could reach in the millions. Shutting down the oil sands alone will result in huge job losses in Alberta, but also in Quebec and Ontario, where tens of thousands of workers make the pipes, valves, machinery, trucks, tires, computers and other equipment that would have been purchased had we not put these actions in place to meet the requirements of the “Pablo Rodriguez Law of Unintended Consequences”.

For the tens of thousands of workers in the Financial sector, we are aware that the mortgage and credit crisis these moves will cause will result in the devastation of your industry as well but we expect that the Barons of Bay street will be able to salvage a fee jobs trading in the International Credit Trading Market, or as some have come to call it, the Kyoto Hot Air Credit Socialist Sucking Ponzi Scheme. Hopefully you will be one of the few out of the tens of thousands Financial Sector workers who will get one of these new jobs – you might even make megatonnes of money

Since there will be a huge rise in the number of corporate and personal bankruptcies , our government will be enacting new legislation to simplify the process. Simply nail a sign to your property say “We quit” or for consumer debt, place your cut up credit and bank cards in an envelope. That’s all, no lawyers or courts needed

We will also be reducing the size of the federal government payroll by at least 35% to meet the requirement to keep the budget balanced to the new and much lower levels of government funds.

We will be reducing the Federal government transfer of dollars to the provinces to meet the new fiscal capabilities of Canada’s Federal government. We will leave it up to individual provinces to decide to close schools or hospitals or whatever. It’s a provincial responsibility

Its not all bad news. Canada should be able to save a fortune in Immigration costs. We have a forecast from government experts that Canada will go to last place in the quest for skilled immigrant labour. Somehow they don’t want to come to a country with power shortages, no air conditioning, limited winter heating, no jobs and a devastated economy. Go figure. The USA and Australia will benefit form these immigrants and their skills,

Mr. Speaker, let me close by thanking the Liberals, especially the mega green leader Citoyen Dion, the NDP, under the leadership of Jack “Talban” bin Layton, the Bloc Quebecois and their inspired of Gilles “Hairnet” Duceppe for voting for Bill C288. But especially all Canadians want to thank Liberal Pablo Rodriguez for devastating our economy, depressing our standard of living to upper third world status. As we huddle in the cold and swelter in the summer heat, as we stare at our old car we can’t afford to drive, as we fondly remember how hard it was to get out of bed on a Monday morning to go to the job we used to have, we can take pride in being the best-est, wonderful-est, the most moralist international boy scouts out to help the planet be saved.

Thank you Mr. Speaker

From Ottawa Watch: Mark Bourrie proves this is all Liberal/Bloc/NDP showmanship unless none of them actually know parliamentary procedure.

The Liberals' Kyoto bill
Anyone who thinks the passage of a bill by the House of Commons results in that bill becoming law had better hit the textbooks. Even passage by the Senate doesn't make the bill into a law. it must receive -- at the government's request -- Royal Assent. Then it must be published in the Canada Gazette and officially proclaimed. Can that be done without the consent of the government?
No.
Can the other parties make the government proclaim and gazette a bill?
No.
The opposition parties have only one real power: to combine and defeat the government on a money bill, thereby forcing an election. They can use that power to push compromises onto the government, but they can't make law.

Actually, I think the Liberals have really shot themselves in the foot here. All the conservatives need to do is come up with a plan for implementing Kyoto. The sooner they do that, the sooner the Canadian people we see that it is all smoke and mirrors. Huge tax increases couples with massive job loss. How'd you like to fight an election with that as a platform? But the Liberals will be forced to do so, because they are the all Kyoto all the time party.

So, the Conservatives realistically cost the plan, all the while making it understood that they think implementation of the plan would be a disaster. Then, drop the writ, saying "let the people decide whether or not we do this". Then the Liberals get to spend the entire campaign digging themselves a deeper grave, while the Conservatives win a majority.

I hope Harper calls their bluff.

RFID 'Powder' - World's Smallest RFID Tag
Added: Feb 14th, 2007 8:32 AM

The world's smallest and thinnest RFID tags were introduced yesterday by
Hitachi. Tiny miracles of miniaturization, these RFID chips (Radio
Frequency IDentification chips) measure just 0.05 x 0.05 millimeters.

Hitachi's mu-chips are already in production; they were used to prevent
ticket forgery at last year's Aichi international technology exposition.
RFID 'powder,' on the other hand, is so much smaller that it can easily
be incorporated into thin paper, like that used in paper currency and
gift certificates.

Science fiction fans will have a field day with this new technology. In
his 1998 novel Distraction, Bruce Sterling referred to bugged money:

"They always played poker with European cash. There was American cash
around, flimsy plastic stuff, but most people wouldn't take American
cash anymore. It was hard to take American cash seriously when it was no
longer convertible outside U.S. borders. Besides, all the bigger bills
were bugged. (Read more about bugged money)"

These tiny RFID tags could be worked into any product; combined with
RFID readers built into doorways, theft of consumer goods would be
practically impossible.

These devices could also be used to identify and track people.

For
example, suppose you participated in some sort of protest or other
organized activity. If police agencies sprinkled these tags around,
every individual could be tracked and later identified at leisure, with
powerful enough tag scanners.

A few modern trends are worth knowing about early. = TG

Capitalism’s
Gravediggers

Socialism is what socialists want, so socialism is what they work for, not the reforms of the “social activists.”

Socialists promote socialism because that is all a socialist can honestly promote.

If you find a “socialist” promoting “social activism,” you will have found a non-socialist ignoring socialism and working for reforms, not solutions.

A tiny group of socialists cannot solve the world’s problems; only a huge, socialist majority can do that.

It is up to every individual to create that majority, and to use it turn off the tap of capitalism, so that the problems can be solved.

The atmosphere outside of the (Elgin and) Winter Garden Theatre last night was similar -- not quite the same, but similar -- to that of a rock concert. Now that he has led the opposition parties into passing a bill forcing the Conservatives to implement the Kyoto Protocol, the worst thing that could happen to him would be to win a snap election this spring and then be forced to live by the terms of Bill C-288.

A Liberal government would face two stark choices:
# Preside over a major federal-provincial crisis that would make the occasional Ottawa-Quebec blowouts sound like Chinese New Year firecrackers.
# Own up to the fact that the bill the party sponsored is a legislative sham, on par with the 1993 Liberal promises to eliminate the GST and renegotiate NAFTA.
It is one thing to want, as do a majority of Canadians, the federal government to act in the spirit of Kyoto; it is another to pretend that any regime can live up to the letter of the accord without making some highly divisive and costly choices.

There is a widespread consensus – stretching way beyond Conservative ranks – that Canada cannot even come close to meeting its Kyoto greenhouse emission reduction objectives in time for the 2012 deadline without launching a major offensive against the energy industries of provinces such as Alberta, and/or inflicting a crippling hit to the already flagging auto industry in Ontario, and/or diverting a debilitating amount of federal resources to a single cause.

And that, in turn, means the other parties have Dion exactly where they want him, stripped of his environmental edge in the lead-up to a possible election.

Nothing now distinguishes the Liberal bottom line on climate change from that of the NDP, the Bloc Québécois and the Green party.

Dion is as saddled to the moribund Kyoto battlehorse as Gilles Duceppe, Jack Layton and Elizabeth May. More so than any of them though, he could be crushed under its weight in the next election. ...-

What’s Jimmy Carter Afraid Of?

Once again, Jimmy Carter has shrunk from debate. ...
Everyone agreed that the best person for this interchange was Ambassador Dennis Ross, who was the main negotiator on the Arab-Israeli situation in both the first Bush administration and the Clinton administration. He was responsible for organizing Camp David II, Clinton’s last-ditch effort to find a resolution to the situation. Ross agreed to appear, but Carter pointedly refused to appear with him or with any other expert. No explanation was given....-

Deny Surgery to Obese and Smokers, Says UK Health Minister

London (CNSNews.com) - As Britain grapples with what's been called an obesity epidemic, a leading government minister here says grossly overweight people should be denied surgery.

Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt said in a newspaper interview this week she approved of doctors refusing overweight patients knee and hip surgery, until they lose weight.

Hewitt also said smokers should have to give up the habit before they are allowed to undergo surgery such as heart bypasses under Britain's National Health Service (NHS).

Overweight patients and smokers should be given access to programs that will help them lose weight and quit smoking, she said. ...-

"How Austria Supports Terrorists

February 16, 2007: The United States has captured nearly a hundred Austrian (Steyr-Mannlicher) HS50 12.7mm (.50 caliber) sniper rifles in Iraq. These rifles were part of a shipment of 800 sold to the Iran national police in 2005, at a cost of some $20,000 each. The Austrians believed that the Iranians wanted the rifles for use against Afghan and Pakistani drug smugglers. The United States saw the weapons as eventually being used against U.S. troops, and placed sanctions on Steyr-Mannlicher, forbidding it to do any business with the United States military..."

UK Tabloid: Muslim Fanatic Works on Train System

British tabloid The Sun specializes in overheated language, but this really is an outrageous story: Muslim fanatic works on trains. (Hat tip: LGF readers.)

A MUSLIM fanatic who dressed as a suicide bomber at a rally threatening terror attacks has got a job on TRAINS.

Sick Omar Khayam cleans carriages unsupervised for rail giant First Group. And he has even got keys to onboard electrical cupboards.

Furious train drivers last night claimed the safety of staff and passengers is being put at risk. One driver added: “It’s an astonishing security breach. We cannot believe this man is employed in a job giving him access to locked places on trains where bombs could be hidden and never be found. He has keys that could be passed on to others for the electrical cupboards in carriages. It is a risk too far.” ...-

Rwanda snubs France to join Commonwealth

The Weekend Australian ^ | 17th February 2007 | Jonathan Clayton

RWANDAN President Paul Kagame says his country will cement its bitter divorce from France and the French-speaking world, which he holds responsible for the 1994 slaughter of up to one million of his countrymen, by joining the Commonwealth. "There are many benefits for us in joining the Commonwealth - cultural, economic, political," Mr Kagame said. He has been invited to attend the November Commonwealth summit as an observer and said: "I hope they will then approve our membership. I am looking forward to it." Mr Kagame, a lanky former guerilla fighter with an austere manner, rarely shows emotion. But the softly-spoken 50-year-old struggles to contain his anger when discussing France in Africa.

"They are the ones who armed and trained the militias ... the evidence is everywhere," he said. "They continued to do so even after the genocide started."

The bitter relations between the two countries came to a head in November when a French judge accused Mr Kagame and several of his top aides of shooting down the aircraft carrying former president Juvenal Habyarimana. The incident triggered the 100-day massacre of Tutsis and of moderate Hutus opposed to his regime.

.....

He later took command of the RPF and can barely conceal his pleasure at the thought of how Paris will view his country's membership of the Commonwealth, the English-speaking club of countries with colonial ties to Britain.

He smiles as he asserts that his "entire experience of France and French influence" has been negative. Other than the recent creation of the Rwandan cricket board, it is hard to imagine an act more calculated to put French noses out of joint than joining a body so closely associated with the British empire. ...-
