The Stephane Dion English-To-English Dictionary

It's the launch of a new SDA category! Or, as Stephane might say "This category will propel sustainably. I have always believe that".

We'll start things off with this short transcript from a taped interview ;

OC: "When did your thinking on these issues start to change? When did you become aware of them? At the time that Paul Martin appointed you, or..."

Dion: "No, I must say I have always been a lover for nature...um, love with a nature and, as a Quebec city kid it's not difficult to be in the wood -- twenty minutes and you are, it's a beautiful lake in the woods, and I love that, and I'm always reading and very concern about protection of nature and involved and so on..."

Later on, same answer, same question, "Where I've been convince that the environment and the economy must be together, and it will become the issue of the century, it came over years, and when I became Minister of the Environment, right away, it's what I said to Mr. Martin and to my deputy minister. It was my plan."

OC: "After you became the Minister..."

Dion: "No, the very moment I became. The first thing I said to the Prime Minister was 'oh, if you give me that, this is the orientation I want to give to this department.' I think it's the key point to that."

Olaf, bless his heart, has more;
"the improvement of the information is too low"
"the necessity to speed up what we have to do is bigger than otherwise".

So, here's the deal. We're unlikely to find passages this rich reprinted in their raw form. But with the growing availability of original audio files, there should be ample opportunity to capture Mr. Green in his unspoiled, natural state.

Bonus points for catching media translation/sanitization of what is rapidly becoming known as "Dionglish". (eg. rewriting a quote on his behalf, or extracting two or three words and replacing the grammatically challenged portions with their own helpful rephrasing.)

Oh. What's that?

Having fun with a politician's mispronunciation and garbled syntax is unfair and mean-spirited? A smear campaign?

You know, that's the part about politics I hate - it's so hard to keep up with the rule changes..

I've been posting "Dionspeak" for a few days at www.ottawawatch.blogspot.com.
I've been going thorough transcripts of Dion's scrums with reporters. There are some real mind-benders.

Posted by: Mark Bourrie at February 6, 2007 8:18 AM

What rule changes? Keep in mind that, for liberals, history only began this morning.

Posted by: glasnost at February 6, 2007 8:20 AM

Dionsky keeps saying "so on".I've heard it several times.Like when he described his 'footprint',like its too much to finish his thot,or doesn't have the answer.
Lookin forward to the comparisons. His secretary must be bipolar to transcribe him( Whoops Bitropical)we're in a warming trend.

Stephanie Dijon has truly become Canada's Borat.

"Las week Hai make da wis-tern pippiles heads explode wid da lead hov ove hai am having for da kyoto dog" " No more izzy job por da Al-burt-ha pipples, hai put dem to work clinning hup da Quebec deficit wid hall dem izzy munnies"

I'd laugh but this little creep is too dangerous to let his clowning dialouge disguise the autocrat inside.

I came in here to post a link to Bourrie's Ottawa Watch blog but I see the man himself beat me to it. He has been regularly posting Dion quotes which is something the media is pointedly not doing, and it is tremendously entertaining.

I think the difference is that Dion is speaking English as a second language and Bush is speaking mangled thoughts in his first language.

How was Joe Clark's French received in Quebec when he was PM?

Joe Clarks French?-- obviously poorly - he lost as …“Je me souviens”—

First we should not believe everything Dion says becuse he does have a propensity to lie.

“My first interest was for the society of animals, not of man,” he recalls. “We had a neighbour named Gaston Moisan, a biologist who was a deputy minister of natural resources. He set traps for the rabbits, to band them, and used to take me with him. He was 5-foot-7, but he was a giant for me.”

A charming childhood anecdote — except, according to Mr. Moisan, it never happened. “I don't know how he could have imagined that,” the retired bureaucrat and university professor says. “I had nothing to do with Stéphane. And I never sensed any interest on his part for my work.”

I think the difference is that with Bushism we know the idea he was trying to express, he just mangles the metaphors as in "I know how hard it is to put food on your family".

With Dion we have no idea what, if anything, he is trying to say. I don't think his thoughts would be any clearer if he spoke perfect English.

Dion's problem is highly advanced beaucratic double speak combined with remedial English.

Posted by: mike mck at February 6, 2007 9:46 AM

"I think the difference is that Dion is speaking English as a second language and Bush is speaking mangled thoughts in his first language."

Is Bush trying to become PM? What is this fixation with Bush? We ARE trying to talk CANADIAN politics.

Posted by: multirec at February 6, 2007 9:54 AM

It's hard to tell whether his main problem is his fractured English, or if it's that he has the attention-span of a fruit-fly; of course, his OVER-RIDING problem is that he's a LIEberal.

"Dion's problem is highly advanced beaurocratic double speak combined with remedial English"
Right on mick...that's 'socio-babble' or 'puple piffle'

Dion called Arnold Schwarzenegger the goovinator this morning in an interview on CFRA radio.

Posted by: James Walker at February 6, 2007 10:20 AM

Look there are many that judge the quality of candidates french....read any one of Paul Wells' columns on the Liberal Leadership, there are constant references to lack of fluency in French, particularly aimed at Kennedy, and Joe the Fox of course and Brison as well

As well, when Belinda beast was a Con her french was constantly under scrutiny. harper's fluency was questioned and Manning's was excoriated.

So the fact that Dion, who cant play the country bumpkin like Chretien, mangles the second official language, and the majority language for the country appears to me to be 100% fair game.

Sad truth, you need to speak both languages correctly to be Prime Minister, seems fair to me. If that costs him votes....well life sucks doesnt it...and political life sucks even more.

I think the Liberals are regretting their choice of leaders. I really do.

Cherniak endorses Stephane Dion

At 3:14 PM, Jason Cherniak said...

Oh, I did not pay for lunch.

Also, there are no quotes from Dion in this. It is all my paraphrasing. ...-

Cherniak paraphrases Dion's franglais.

The Liberals know they have a major problem with Dion's Donglish-Franglais. Bah, oui.

Dion translates the AdScam file as the Unity file.
Maudit. $$$$

Posted by: maz2 at February 6, 2007 10:52 AM

Dion's excruciating English isn't simply due to its being a second language.

Think of the many European and other international leaders who speak excellent English. I work with many colleagues in Europe - from Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Japan etc - and their English is excellent. I know many students learning English - and their English is better than Dion's!

The fact that he can't speak the language of the majority of Canadians is a valid problem and can't be swept under the rug as 'bigotry' is we complain about this lack. It's real.

A more serious problem than even his inability to speak is the content of that speech. Listening to the Ottawa Citizen interview, and to other interviews with Dion - I am astonished at his ignorance and arrogance.

Note his comments on the env't posted above. The env't, Mr. Dion, isn't 'the beautiful woods and lakes'. That's naive utopianism. The env't includes the farms, the cities, the roads, the factories - everything and everywhere on this planet. The task is to enable all these factors to interact constructively - not to reduce all of life to 'the beautiful woods and the lakes'.

His solution to health care was offensive. He ignored the real problems caused by the centralization of bureaucracy and the high costs of a public, non-competitive system - and instead, implied that the only problems were that the hospitals etc, were not 'organized well'. His solution would be to have a gov't team (more bureaucracy) 'research' and come up with the 'best practices' of organizing health care practices....Then, he'd send this information out to all the hospitals..on how to organize themselves..and voila - Canada's health care, wait times, solved.
Insufferable. He's treating everyone as if he were the Full Professor, telling us, his first year undergraduates, How To Write An Essay.

By the way, in contrast, there's an excellent text interview with Harper. Go to triple w dot irpp dot org.

Excellent comments from Harper, saying that the focus of a gov't should be on governing, not on being re-elected.
Contrast that with the Liberals who ignored governing and had always, only one focus- getting re-elected.

And Harper's insistence that we live in a global world and our economic and other decisions have international effects.
His insistence on clarity and focus.

His comments on Kyoto - and pointing out how bad Canada's record is within both emissions and pollution - and how sending money overseas (the Liberal plan) is unacceptable.

Dion, in my view, is a disaster. What is going on now, however, is a fight between the Liberals and the NDP for the latte crowd. It's not so much a fight against Harper - for there is little to attack him on. It's a fight for the utopian socialist deadminds - and the only ones fighting for these deadminds - are the left. The Liberals, the NDP and the Bloc.

If Garth is joining the liberals, can a party survive with both Hammond and Turner out there spouting off. Should be interesting. Watch to see if his blog is taken down.

I think we should say Mssr.Dion has "flatulence" in English.

Its mostly hot air and what he says stinks and is incomprehensable.

"you izzy muny pipples tag node"

Posted by: cal2 at February 6, 2007 11:13 AM

"How was Joe Clark's French received in Quebec when he was PM?"

How is that relevant? The fact is French in Canada is spoken by less than 20% of the population and declining rapidly.

Not comprehending anything that comes out of Dion's mouth and pointing out that it's an obvious and major problem is hardly "unfair and mean spirited."

A want to be Prime Minister who can't directly communicate with the majority of the population would result in disaster if he was elected. Not to mention, foreign allies and enemies that couldn't comprehend him either.

It's not just grammar and syntax, Dion's thought pattern seems scrambled.

I've spoken with people who have used hand signs and minimal English to communicate more clearly. All you have to do is take a cab in Toronto.

Posted by: irwin daisy at February 6, 2007 11:16 AM

It always amazes me how the supporters of Dionspeak defend him by comparison to Joe Why and even Bush who has nothing to do with this.

Aren’t we entitled to a PM that speaks English? Besides, 80% of the country is English and except for a couple of years out of the last 40 we’ve had PMs from Quebec. Doesn’t the 80% deserve to be represented in English, not to mention by someone without a Quebec cocooned view of the world? Why should we go on letting ourselves be beaten up by this outrageous imbalance?

Moreover, what is more disturbing than his failure to communicate is the ideas he’s trying to communicate. The one-hour interview at the Ottawa Citizen was almost entirely about Kyoto. When asked about Health, he brings up asthma and in a clumsy way he switches the topic back to Kyoto again. He’s a one trick pony and pony Dion is leaving quite a mess in his stall for the Liberals to clean up.

Posted by: nomdenet at February 6, 2007 11:20 AM

oh yeah..forgot to mention in "breaking news",The ever-important Garth will be holding the usual"it's-all-about-me-news conference about nothingpalooza" later today!Wonder if Dion will be by his side to welcome "all zeeze new pipples"to the party of corruption!

Posted by: Sammy at February 6, 2007 11:28 AM

As for Garth Turner going to the Liberal party, that was foretold long ago. By Turner himself, who wrote that he didn't think he could 'serve his people well' (ahh, the King's Majesty) as an independent; that he'd, in order to carry out His Task, have to join a mainstream party...and he mentioned the Liberals.

They can have him. Add yet another narcissist to their ranks, to join the Other Liberal Narcissists of Chretien, Dion..and Turner.

Posted by: ET at February 6, 2007 11:35 AM

More important tho (on the Turner thingy),can we HOPE,that Cherniak will give us another petition to play with?Seeing as the last floor-crossing evoked his outrage.so much so,he put up that stupid petition...and that worked out SO well for him!
Interesting to note on Cherniak's "Head Spinning All Over The Place" blog, not one mention of the Holland remarks, and he must be cleansing all comments re same.

Posted by: johnboy at February 6, 2007 12:00 PM

The references to George Bush remind me of the chretien defence syndrome - i'd criticize chretien, the libs would start yelling about somebody else, never even bothering to defend their idiot pm. But while we're on that topic, the much maligned bushisms are famous, but not that frequent compared to citoyen dion who writes a small book of them every time he opens his mouth. With him, the correct phrasing is harder to find than the mistakes.

Posted by: dean rune at February 6, 2007 12:08 PM

ET - Please! Quit your bitching. Dion and Turner are the best things to ever happen to the CPC and the West. Let's just shut up and let the two clowns cut their own throats.

Posted by: BCer at February 6, 2007 12:38 PM

Bcer...that would be great if ROC was not getting the glossed over Dion by way of MSM..
and can we see Dion right now saying "Garth who?"
Let the floor crossing arguments begin...oh wait Garthy wouldn't do that...he was safely independent for awhile...chicken!!!

Something puzzles me - Dion has been in Parliament since early 1996 - why is his lack of fluency in English only being noticed and talked about now?
By the way, does he still hold French citizenship, or has he given that up?

Mssr Dion is still a French Citizen. he said his Mother gave it to him, but actually he had to apply.

his memory is not sustainable.

RE: Sad truth, you need to speak both languages correctly to be Prime Minister, seems fair to me.

Not really, IIRC there was nothing fair about the way French (and metric) was shoved down the throats of all Canadians. IMHO, there should have been a referendum, on both of these very, very important issues.

Posted by: concrete at February 6, 2007 2:31 PM

Read Dion's comments and compare them to the subject line of emails caught in your spam filter. Maybe Dion is the one sending me all these emails.

For example:

"The economy on drugs you are in need is available ..."

"shall be turned his house went behind one the end ..."

"so at accident"

"shall be turned his house went behind one the end ..."

etc.

Posted by: kmn at February 6, 2007 2:34 PM

And how did dion enter parliament, he was an unelected quebec liberal appointed to cabinet by Chretain. Imagine, appointing unelected quebecer to a cabinet post. If I recall chretain also appointed a couple of other unelected men to cabinet. Funny how the msm missed that a year ago today.

Suhana is talking to the busines guy, and she makes a comment on Alberta driving the economy. He states that bldg permits rose 9% in the past year, take out Alberta, the figure is 1%.
Her comment was something like just Alberta and not the rest. dion and his leadership of mass destruction should pay attention. So should all those GTA and Que voters. If Alberta goes under due to consequences it will you who suffer the consequences.

From QP today..another Dionglish.."the ray-goo-layshuns should have been done one year"..translation i think is "the regulations to cut ghg should have been in place a yr.ago" Honest to God,I could not understand anything he said..just did a quick translate, but unsure really if what I thot I heard was right.
Anyone notice lately, the expressions on MP's behind Dion, when he is speaking in QP?They look bamboozled too, except for Marlene Jennings who looks rapturous.I am especially enjoying the "muzzling"of Holland..he looked sick, and deathly quiet,in QP last 2 days.I noticed also, that Hezbollah Coderre took run at military/allegations today, hints that O'Connor will "coverup."

Posted by: Sammy at February 6, 2007 4:22 PM

I pride myself on being able to root out the message in very mangled thick accent english be it scottish, european, or chinese which is my wife's mother tongue. Ive travelled the world and spent years at university speaking with foreign students. I joke with them that their english is better than my whatever.

language is important to me; I try very hard for instance to follow the story line of shakespeare's elizabethan english plays.

with dion I cant be bothered trying to figure out the message because its all crap anyway.

Watch to see if his media company is bought a pymt for his crossing the floor. I love it when politicians have to eat their words and pretend to have ethics. Turner will take LaPierres place re numbers. Did he wear nice shoes.

Harper, Dion both profess support for Israel
Canadian Press (ctv.ca)

Conservative Prime Minister Harper, citizen of Canada:
... said his party unequivocally endorsed Israel's month-long bombing campaign against Hezbollah in Lebanon last summer -- something no other party did.

"We got a pretty sharp reminder that it's one thing to offer supportive words to Israel when it's convenient,'' he said.

"And (it's) quite another to stand firm in its hour of need ... When it was not popular to do so, we stood and told the truth. Israel had a friend that mattered.

"And that, my friends, is the only thing that really counts.''...-

Liberal leader Dion, citizen of Canada, said:
"That's why I am so proud to be here tonight, not just as a Liberal but as a Canadian, to toast Israel and Canada's partnership with her.''

Liberal leader Dion, citizen of France, said:

Posted by: cal2 at February 7, 2007 9:27 AM

Gore voted against kyoto before the 2000 election. 95-0 was the vote against in the senate, when clinton was president. 56 of those who voted are still in office, should it ever come back. Had Gore won, it would have still been defeated. Perhaps it is dion who lost the years from 1992-2000 when Clinton was president, even tho he was a minister during that time, albeit, not an elected minister. No wonder the environment to him is the green scenery in Que.
