Even Eason Jordan can't find him.
If an Iraqi police captain by the name of Jamil Hussein exists, there is no convincing evidence of it - and that means the Associated Press has a journalistic scandal on its hands that will fester until the AP deals with it properly.[...]
In statements, the AP insists Captain Hussein is real, insists he has been known to the AP and others for years, and insists the immolation episode occurred based on multiple eyewitnesses.
But efforts by two governments, several news organizations, and bloggers have failed to produce such evidence or proof that there is a Captain Jamil Hussein. The AP cannot or will not produce him or convincing evidence of his existence.
It is striking that no one has been able to find a family member, friend, or colleague of Captain Hussein. Nor has the AP told us who in the AP's ranks has actually spoken with Captain Hussein. Nor has the AP quoted Captain Hussein once since the story of the disputed episode.
Update - AP responds - "We didn't read what Mr. Jordan wrote, and we're not going to." More at the link.
Hey , as long as the intentions of the article were legitimate , who needs facts ?
Posted by: Bill D. Cat at January 2, 2007 11:31 AMIf Allah can speak to Mohammed, then surely Jamil Hussein can speak to Associated Press.
Posted by: ET at January 2, 2007 11:36 AMFrome the article "Inquiries by others point to there being no Captain Jamil Hussein, although there is no proof of that."
So we need a non birth certificate? An unpassport? What kind of writing and logic is this? Simply said, AP needs to prove that Jamil exists. Everybody else does not have to and cannot prove that he does not exist.
enough
AP will cling to the axiom "Absence of Proof is not Proof of Absence" until their fingers bleed.
Posted by: Wally at January 2, 2007 12:34 PMET, THAT is funny!!!
Posted by: Deity at January 2, 2007 12:54 PMFound him!

Posted by: Ted at January 2, 2007 1:01 PM"...To make matters worse, Captain Jamil Hussein was a key named source in more than 60 AP stories on at least 25 supposed violent incidents over eight months."
To admit that "Captain Hussein" doesn't exist, that he was a phony construct used by Iraqi stringers with an agenda, fed to lefty AP reporters with an agenda...would cause AP's whole anti-Iraq Liberation line to monumentally crash. That would also cause AP's professional credibility to likewise crash.
That's why the AP CAN'T admit the truth, it would destroy a large part of the Western MSM's anti-Iraq propaganda, Western Liberalism's anti-Iraq propaganda...and crush AP's professionally credibility, perhaps beyond repair.
My conclusion is that AP (and their allies, such as the NY Times) will continue to stonewall until, THEY HOPE, the Western public's attention span evaporates.
IMO, THAT is why this story must be vigorously followed by alternative media, the Blogosphere. This is at least as important as exposing the truth of the lefty MSM's anti-Israel propagandizing in last summer's Israel-Hezbollah War.
Associated Press Jan/07
Captain Jamil Hussein is a cover name used to protect the real identity of our informant. Conditions being what they are in Iraq today AP will not divulge the real identity of Captain Hussein. Captain Hussein's information to date has proved to be accurate and reliable and we will not, in any way, allow Captain Hussein's safety to be put in jeopardy.
Wait for it, it will come.
Anyone else amused and bothered by Eason Jordan's resurrection as self-designated ethically driven investigative reporter? He's the elite CNN slob that accused the US military of murdering journalists at Davos, as a refresher, then, used a weasel way out.

All that Jordan has really done so far is hijack the efforts of a sharp blogger, belatedly put his name on the controversy, use his Rolodex, and hope for rehabilitation on the cheap and easy. We are still waiting for the Davos video tapes, Eason. I'll say it again, these MSM weasels are lower than dirt.

Confederate Yankee has done research on the other 61 articles where Jamil Hussein is listed as source.
"That I was unable to find corroborating accounts for some stories is quite understandable; even in non-war-torn countries some news organizations have access to some stories denied others, as reporting assets and sources are not evenly distributed. Most of the AP dispatches using Jamil Hussein as a source were simply not that big in the wider and often larger chaos of the bloody sectarian conflict whirling through Baghdad; a gunbattle killing two suicide bombers, or even a non-fatal car-bombing is something that has sadly become far too common in many parts of Iraq, and Baghdad in particular. That other news agencies don't account for every single attack of this kind is not surprising-though it should be somewhat suspect when in 40 straight stories, not a single one of your competitors captured the same event. Not one. At that point, some sort of editorial oversight should have kicked in, should it not?
And yet, in 40 AP stories checked, only in two instances covering a total of four stories did I run into anything approaching possible corroboration."

this is a ploy by AP to get us believing in ghosts. LOL !!!
what I wanna know is why are ghosts depicted as wearing wind blown garments? does cotton have an afterlife? ghosts should all be neked.
and upper mgmt of AP should be dragged neked thru the street and turned into ghosts.
did they really think this wasnt going to come out in the wash ???

Posted by: sarge at January 4, 2007 1:07 PMWhile it is amusing to watch the wingnuts spinning place "looking" for Jamail Hussein [from the safety of their keyboards], the incident that started this whole thing off is now ignored.
The story was that some Iraqis were dragged from a mosque and set on fire. The Right immediately started disputing this story by Disputing whether AP's source existed. It obviously went against some Conservative game plan. When OTHER WITNESSES were found for this story (as someone on this blog pointed out a month ago in comments), the wingnuts dropped their direct questioning of that story, while continuing "questioning" the existence of Hussein.
Why is this? The story has been confirmed. Why the continued attack on AP for Hussein? Could it be they wish to downplay the fact that A Conservative caused a total cock-up in Iraq by attacking those who tell us about it?
Kill the story by killing the messanger. How totalitarian of them.
