Brussels Sprouts Cause Gas in Turtles, Too
A turtle given a Christmas 'treat' of Brussels sprouts at his sea life center home raised a rather large alarm with his reaction to the veggies.
After eating his snack, the turtle broke wind, causing bubbles to rise to the surface of his tank, where they popped and alerted the tank's sensors, reported Metro.co.uk.
The alarm was raised and marine biologist Sarah Leaney rushed to the tank, afraid it was overflowing. Needless to say, it was nothing more than a little gas emergency.
"Sprouts are a healthy Christmas treat for sea turtles," she said. "But they give similar side effects to those experienced by humans."

Yemen: Boats with Somali refugees capsize
All 17 smugglers have been captured, UNHCR said.
"The rescue operation is ongoing. There are 140 people still missing. Some of them may have made it to shore, and may be looking for assistance, and others of them may have drowned," UNHCR spokeswoman Jennifer Pagonis said by telephone.
"I am deeply saddened by this latest tragedy involving smugglers' boats carrying desperate people across the Gulf of Aden," U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres said in a statement.
"We urgently need a concerted international effort aimed at addressing root causes, educating would-be migrants and cracking down on the smugglers and traffickers based in Somalia," Guterres said.
Many of the survivors said they were fleeing the conflict between the Ethiopian-backed Somali government and rival Islamists. After a week of fighting, Ethiopian and government troops have reached the Islamist stronghold of Mogadishu.

It's good to note that Alex has provided a link to additional information on the Israel-Hezbollah conflict of this summer. Clearly, the NGO Monitor has its own agenda and that's fine but readers should also take its information with a grain of salt as they should that from Amnesty or HRW.
I found it interesting to note that there was no denial or mention by NGO Watch of the use of cluster munitions by Israel or Hezbollah during the conflict and reports that the majority of Israel's cluster munitions were fired during the 72 hours prior to the ceasefire. This information was also provided by Amnesty and HRW along with other NGOs. Israeli soldiers have confirmed the use of these weapons and we know that large areas (including civilian) are now contaminated by unexploded cluster submunitions.

gotta agree with that nemo. so the question is refined to: where in scripture does it say that God chose to do this? to have His Son 'conceived' on the same day as He was born? and if scripture doesnt support this assertion it kinda looks like hoss came up with it all on his own. a common practice amongst the fundamentalists.
want an example? mr 'liberty university lynchburg' (google it) railed about the anti-christian motif of Sarah McLachlin's 'Lilith Fair' tour. so I did a lookup in e-sword (google it) for 'lilith'.
nuthin.

Posted by: Lee at December 28, 2006 1:37 PMThere is a difference between when an event happened and the date Catholics/Christrians choose to commemorate that event. That is what we have with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Pope Pius 1X by way of an encyclical in 1854 chose December 8th as the date to commemorate that event. Same thing with Christmas. Religious historians pretty much agree that December 25 was not the actual date that Christ was born. That is, however, the date that most Christians celebrate the birth of Christ.
I hope that this helps.
Posted by: a different Bob at December 28, 2006 1:39 PMLook Bollocks, why don't you set up a website and call it Bible B.S or something. Then you can argue your inane and totally uninteresting subject 'til your heart's content.
The rest of us want to discuss something interesting and timely.
And by the way, Lilith was supposedly the first wife of Adam, and she was one evil person. If you're within a hundred miles of a bible, check out the Book of Isaiah.
I've always been confused by the genesis story in the bible. Who did Adamn and Eve's sons marry? Did they have sisters or does the bible say other women were created too?
Posted by: Arakan at December 28, 2006 2:19 PM"something interesting and timely"
?
look jerry, discussing Christ's birth at christmas isnt timely?
nah, youre just bereft of any 'proof'. the boring part is the interminable waiting for hoss to cite his so called 'proof' the bible specifies december 25 as the key date.
also, what chapter and verses in Isaiah use the name 'lilith'??? or is this just another boring invention of the religionists who insist on invention and interpretation to get scripture to align with their agenda?
so jerry, what are you afraid of? the truth? that 'the christian tradition of christmas' is a collosal FARCE AND FRAUD, an invention by man at tangent to scripture and God's will? ANSWER THE GODAM QUESTIONS and then my postings on the issue will cease. I do in fact find probing and examining theological issues of this importance to be most interesting. you however appear to be in denial.
also, regarding the spouses of the children of Adam and Eve, as icky as it may sound today, and so it should, the fact is the genes of that first couple were in very good condition; there was no inclination to amplify genetic disorders by having children with a close relative.
they married each other and continued the population growth until, ummm, around the time of Lot possibly, when the edict came that incest was verboten. there was no longer any necessity to marry and sire children with a sibling, plus kinda like the ban on eating pork(trichinosis), God knew of the hidden dangers, ie, the looming perpetration of genetic disorders if siblings were to continue having offspring. this is why we need to obey God; He knows completely why such-and-such is a no-no. we dont have that perspective but historically there is a lot of proof of the advisibility of following His commands.
ah but Im a knee-jerk leftist so what would I know about this topic eh?

Posted by: John at December 28, 2006 3:24 PMFurther to Cal2’s link regarding the possibility of the Ka’bah originally being a Hindu temple, there is no doubt that it existed as a place of worship, a place to which pilgrimages were made, long before old Mo showed up and brought his own particular brand of evil to the world.
From Robert Spencer’s The Truth About Mohammed:
The Quraysh [Muhammed’s tribe] did a lucrative trade from the pilgrimages to the local shrine, the Ka’bah, which housed numerous pagan idols – chiefly the image of the god Hubal. The local gods of all the area tribes were represented in the shrine, along with other idols identified with trees and stones near the Ka’bah.
… the Prophet of Islam rode a camel to the Ka’bah. He found it full of idols – 360 in all – … He ordered that all the idols be burned except for an icon of Jesus and Mary...
I knew mohammed had borrowed a lot of stuff usually in a mistranslated way from his travels on caravans. the link shows that a lot of the kaaba symbols were Hindu. this had never occured to me that the Indian empire had occupied this area as well. just one more ingredient in a misplaced mishmash of marakesh mullahs and misquotes.

"MWL Wants Lawsuits for Abuse of Islam and the Prophet," by P.K. Abdul Ghafour in Arab News
JEDDAH, 28 December 2006 — A two-day conference organized by the Makkah-based Muslim World League yesterday called for a consultative commission in order to take legal action against those who abuse Islam and its Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and Islamic sanctities, at local and international courts of justice, the Saudi Press Agency said.
The conference titled “In Defense of the Prophet” called upon Islamic countries and governments to stand united to defend the Islamic faith and its Prophet. It denounced the smear campaigns to tarnish the image of the Prophet and urged Muslims to make all-out efforts to project the true picture of Islam and the great divine teachings of the Prophet.
MWL Secretary-General Abdullah Al-Turki said the attack on the Prophet was an expression of enmity toward Islam.
“The whole Muslim Ummah, including its leadership, scholars and ordinary people was outraged by such attacks and this again shows the lofty position the Prophet has in their hearts,” he said in reference to the Muslim response to cartoons depicting the Prophet.
MWL plans to launch an international program to introduce the Prophet and the conference called for setting up a fund to support the program. “The anti-Islam campaign also intends to trigger a cultural conflict between the Islamic world and the West and create a situation of clash and conflict in place of dialogue and peaceful coexistence,” the MWL chief said....
Jamal Badawi, a Canadian-Muslim expert on Islam, spoke about the Prophet’s outstanding influence on human history.
“There is no other personality who has made such a positive impact on history,” he told the conference.
Positive impact? Like living the perfect example for rapists, pedophiles, mass murderers, brigands, thieves, war mongers, destroyers, bigots, racists and otherwise, savages to follow?

The Blogosphere at War
I wrote this paper as an attempt to describe how the blogosphere works; to situate it vis-a-vis the mainstream media and to indicate some of the ways it can be used as a weapon of information warfare. The reader may find many of the ideas half-baked, and the reader would be right. But perhaps this flawed little monograph can contribute in some small way to a discussion of what the blogosphere is and what it's future might be. I truly believe that "it is possible that in the long run the global public will come to rely on fellow Internet users to learn about the world more than it will from professional journalists."
The Blogosphere At War
Background
There is considerable interest in the idea that "blogs" are somehow able to offset the mainstream media's (MSM) ability to sell a given narrative to the public, a power which is of considerable interest in peace and even more so in war. It is widely recognized that molding public perceptions through narratives is nearly as important in war as the outcomes on the actual battlefield. Palestinian Media Watch convincingly demonstrates that Arab and Muslim organizations have long made influencing international publics through print and broadcast media a strategic goal, especially in any confrontation with Israel. This effort has historically followed two tracks: ...-

Winning the Information War in Iraq
By Michael McBride
Thursday, December 28, 2006
Excerpt:
It is time for our military to accept the fact that the media is working against us. Yes, they pretend they aren’t, and they posture behind the thinnest of guises, but they are actively trying to subvert the intentions of the President, and in doing so, “fighting” the military. It is time to fight back.
I am not talking about closing them down. I am talking about countering their methods and their messaging, and rendering their tactics harmless to our efforts. It can be done, and we should start by accepting that we no longer should be seeking their coverage as validation of our efforts or righteousness. They have gone beyond the pale, we no longer need them on our team, and in fact it is time to rid ourselves of them.
Then don’t look back.

MOODE MOODE, Somalia, Dec 28 (Reuters) - The bloated corpses of Islamist fighters and an unbroken line of tank tracks along the Baidoa-Mogadishu highway tell the story of a swift advance for the Somali government and its Ethiopian allies. For at least 80 km (50 miles) east of the government's base Baidoa, spent shells from heavy guns litter the road along which the battle for control for the Horn of Africa nation has played out over the last 10 days. The Islamists had controlled Buur Hakaba for more then two months and massed troops there for their assault on Baidoa.

Well if the ice build up took 3000 years then one would imagine there was nothing but land there 3001 years ago....perhaps that is the last time this happened? or perhaps it was a lot longer ago.....maybe they should go stufy the ice and study the land underneath it.
As for Bollocks, ulm....yeah the Andes rocks have seen sunshine before.....and there is more sea ice cover in the antarctic and arctic this year compared to last.
Yes there are variations around a tend up and down. All that MIGHT tell you is that the earth is getting warmer, which is a trend from about 10,000 years ago. It says nothing about why.
Posted by: Stephen at December 29, 2006 12:17 AMToday some newscaster said that this has been the warmest winter on record. He said temps were an average of 4 degrees higher than normal. So, while we suffered 26 below zero F. I am so happy it was not 30 degrees below zero. Spent the day setting up my new computer, transferring files, installing programs etc. But, we have a problem, the speakers don't work. Something about the sound card. Can't find an 800 number for ACER, but went to the site, and it seems we have a code 10 problem. Anyone know how to fix it.

Hoax: As someone who logs on early in the a.m. I've often suspected that there is some, shall we say 'manipulation' undertaken in the small hours.
It seems that every time there is a 'controversial' question the initial responses are inordinately skewed to the 'leftist', (for want of a better word), position, and although that tends to balance out later with more rational posters it brings into question the validity of the final 'results'.......which, in this instance, ended up 50-50.

ITV's new prime-time shockerama, "Extinct" (Saturday 9th December, 7.30pm) was truly appalling. We were treated to an hour of dumbed-down seat-of-the-pants celebrity flummery, hosted by those two eminent scientific authorities Sir Trevor McDonald and Zoe Ball, in front of a happy-clappy studio audience who clearly didn't care whether they were watching "Deal or No Deal", "Come Dancing" or a programme about lancing boils, so long as they could whoop and cheer at every opportunity. The sound-track of plastic-rock-by-the-metre was all-pervasive as the almost inarticulate Anneke Rice flew in a helicopter ("Incredible!") over a snow-bound Arctic landscape ("Incredible!") in pursuit of several polar bears ("Incredible!") who were scared out of their wits until they were shot down with tranquilliser darts ("Incredible!") and had damn great radio collars put on them - all for their own good, of course. They might be "the largest carnivorous animals on the planet" (so where does that leave killer whales, then? They're bloody fish, are they?), weighing as much as 12 men, able to run at 25mph and allegedly capable of man-eating, but one actually found oneself feeling sorry for the poor buggers. You'd think they'd done enough to avoid being messed around by tree-huggers, wouldn't you, living at the very end of the earth in temperatures down to minus 40 degrees and surrounded by nothing but ice?
The format of the programme is simple. It's just like "Big Brother", "Celebrity Come Dancing" or "I'm a Celebrity, get me out of here!" but with animals. And celebrities.
Each week a celebrity has to champion an animal that's supposedly about to become extinct in a sort of balloon debate. The viewers can vote on which animal wins £1 million, which will probably be spent chasing it with helicopters. I expect they love it really. It's like a game to them.
For God's sake, just how low can we sink? What will it be next - "Celebrity Diseases"?

"Ice shelves float on the ocean, so how do they raise the ocean level?"
jeezuz hoss are you ever stoopid. ummm, how can I put this. they ARENT made of styrofoam.
the ice shelf sits on top of the water, then when it snaps off, wanders away and melts, ALL of it goes into the ocean INCLUDING the ice that was *previously* held above the water level by the floating action.
ergo, a rise in water level doofus.
also, all that high altitude snow and ice which is melting works its way into the oceans yielding a net increase in water quantity there. and also the receeding glaciers. w(here)tf do you t'ink the water goes sirrah? to the oceans thus higher still!!
crikey are you ever freakin dumb.

For a few months now, they have been posting "Picture of the Day" (found along the left hand column) of anti-Bush and the war in Iraq in a negative light.
http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Columnists/home.html
They have a poll below the picture of protesters bashing Bush rating him as the villain of the year.
"Americans chose George W. Bush as both the hero and the villain of the year in a recent poll. In which camp would you put the U.S. president?"
...sorry, the poll is ABOVE the image along the left hand column.
Maybe we can help fix the count as it paints Bush as the villain.
Anyone who signs their posts with "I win again" is an automatic pass for me. You are just spamming the blog and not adding to the debate.
enough
I suspect that most of the tree huggers and envirowackos believe in Darwins theory, survival of the fittest. So, when some species is supposedly in danger, doesn't that say they are not the fittest and should be gone. Also, the theory of evolution, doesn't that mean one species evolves into another. So, why the cry over the polar bears, they may be evolving into a non swimming animal. As far as the iceshelf breaking and raising the ocean. That will only happen when it melts, and considering they say it broke off over 18 mos ago, why the panic. Nobody noticed it so it couldn't have been a big problem.

the story this morning is the ice cap is melting therefore the polar bears are endangered, but since the polar bears are endangered the Inuit cant sell the hunting rights to the yanks so they dont want them to be called endangered. sounds like more research grants coming.round and round it goes.

how can you not understand what Archimedes figured out in around 200BC.
Ice displaces exactly its mass of water, not its volume.
