Print reporters, editors, and photographers continue to make up the largest professional category, with 67 cases in 2006, but Internet journalists are a growing segment of the census and now constitute the second largest category, with 49 cases. The number of imprisoned journalists whose work appeared primarily on the Web, via e-mail, or in another electronic form has increased each year since CPJ recorded the first jailed Internet writer in its 1997 census.

I'm sure Alexandre Trudeau, who makes films for the CBC and is a contributing editor of Maclean's raised the issue earlier this fall when he was bringing flowers to Fidel's hospital suite.

Posted by: Kate at December 20, 2006 11:36 PMwhen is somebody going to have the guts and access to confront turdeau 2.0 on this castro crap?
itsy bitsy little cuba within striking distance of matching china with the largest population in the world for jailed web journalists.
fidel such a man of the people bla bla bla.
its TURDeau, ok people? from now on eh ?
Iran, Russia and other repressive regiems have higher counts of imprisioned or snuffed journalists.
I recall just recently seeing an evil photo of several men hanging by the neck from extended crane booms taken in Iran.
Probably a mix of brave journalists and a Christian or two.
There is a SICKNESS in the Middle East. = TG
Posted by: TG at December 21, 2006 1:49 AMAnd these are all countries that are ruled by either communists or warlords. Quele suprise!
I am curious though, are these "internet journalists" actual journalists, or just some clowns with opinions & web space? I've been through quite a few blog type sites & most strike me as extremist nuts who should be prohibited from writing anything more public than a personal journal. And while I do believe in freedom of opinion & expression, there are limits.
Next thing we know, the left will return to power in a shocking landslide and come and haul my and Kate's butts away to the gulag for enemies of the leftist state apparatus, just for opining on what a bunch of poopheads the Librano$$$ are...
Hell, it already happens in other leftist regimes, as we've seen... and the Librano$$$ are pretty mean, too, when they wanna be...
Maybe we'll get to be roomies with the folks who run the Caledonia homeowners' website...
Posted by: The Canadian Sentinel at December 21, 2006 6:24 AMNo, Sinclair, you just think you believe in freedom of expression because it makes you feel good. You don't. Not reallly.
Posted by: christopher h at December 21, 2006 6:52 AMThese days half your journalists are right up there with politicians, lawyers and kiddie diddlers and axe murderers.
It would make my day to see Alexander Turd-O imprisoned, and I would by a round for the house if he got the firing squad.
Posted by: Jim at December 21, 2006 7:54 AMFor the sake of fairness, I believe Ethiopia and Eritrea should be allowed to combine their numbers so as to take the lead with 41 persons imprisoned.
This is the only way they'll ever lead the world in anything, and we should recognize their efforts.
So Eritrea wanted independence from Ethiopia due to that country's oppressive regime. Hmmm. Nice going.
Posted by: dmorris at December 21, 2006 10:35 AMWell, there are two scenerios: 1) the government (which in theory represents the people) controls the press 2) big corporations, which represent their owners and investors, control the press. I know which situation I prefer. I also know which one most of you prefer....

Posted by: Silicon Valley Jim at December 21, 2006 11:42 AMNow, Kate, you realize the Cuba they are referring to is GUANTANAMO. The people's republuc of Fidel, er, Cuba is a WORKER'S PARADISE.
(but a free speech nightmare all you dumb Castro ass kissing leftists)

I'd trade so-called "freedom of the press" - freedom for those who own the media empires to say whatever they like, that is, whatever serves their interests, and to inundate us all with their propaganda - for health care any day.
p.s. China does not provide free health care.
