Goodbye

And good riddence!

The crowd is getting ugly. Soldiers roll up in a Hummer. Suddenly, the whole right half of your body is screaming in agony. You feel like you've been dipped in molten lava. You almost faint from shock and pain, but instead you stumble backwards -- and then start running. To your surprise, everyone else is running too. In a few seconds, the street is completely empty.

You've just been hit with a new nonlethal weapon that has been certified for use in Iraq -- even though critics argue there may be unforeseen effects.

[...]

The [microwave] beam produces what experimenters call the "Goodbye effect," or "prompt and highly motivated escape behavior." In human tests, most subjects reached their pain threshold within 3 seconds, and none of the subjects could endure more than 5 seconds.

"It will repel you," one test subject said. "If hit by the beam, you will move out of it -- reflexively and quickly. You for sure will not be eager to experience it again."

...i'm sure the uberOzone-types will start hyperventilating over this one...

Actually, why don't they use the yodelling sound track from "Mars Attacks!"...?

heh

The article mentions that new bombs to kill people can be put into use in a matter of weeks, but a non-lethal weapon may take years for approval.
What an idiotic world we live in

With the bombs Lee the enemy won't come back another day and win round 2.

Western Civilization.

Very interesting...but a little scary. I get nervous about any new technology that makes it easier for a government to control the people.

Imagine the consequences if this technology fell into the wrongs hands: rogue states, terrorists, a Liberal or NDP government. It'd be "bye-bye freedom of assembly."

Posted by: bryceman at December 10, 2006 1:03 PM

So how long before we can use it on Taliban Jack and the NDP an Dion and the Lieberals

Posted by: Pissdoff at December 10, 2006 1:10 PM

LMAO...you create something to try and dispel gangs nicely and without any harm...and the moonbats still bitch and complain.

Posted by: Justthinkin at December 10, 2006 1:13 PM

What will be the long term consequences of even low exposure to this "energy beam"? Easily it will include cancer, some birth defects. Eye damage?

How would you like to be microwaved?

Playing around with this type of energy radiation will be hazardous to participants health for sure. Look at how trigger-happy some police forces get with tasers. They use them as if they were firehoses.

Give me the good old days..of batons! You heal in a few days, and have a neat scar for storytellin in the seniors centre.

"How would you like to be microwaved?"

Can we use it to cook pizza pops more quickly to put in my kids lunchbags?

Posted by: Big Jack Attack at December 10, 2006 1:37 PM

Hey, looks like my tin foil hat may still come in handy.

Posted by: Jimbo at December 10, 2006 1:46 PM

Can we use it to cook pizza pops more quickly to put in my kids lunchbags?

LOL

You just know that when doing their "scientific tests" someone tried to do exactly that. Wonder where we can see the results of that little experiment.

Posted by: bryceman at December 10, 2006 1:56 PM

a gadget like that is sure to find alternate uses by the enlisted personnel.

propane, charcoal and gasless bbq in the middle of the ME desert for a taste of backyard cookin' !!!

as far as long term effects, ummm, maybe that can be partly attributed to the ugly crowds gathering in the first place, necessitating the development and use of such a device .....

Posted by: bollocks at December 10, 2006 1:59 PM

I would think any self respecting lefty would welcome a device that warms the , bums, users, criminals & other neer do wells with a golden glow of heat.

Posted by: Revnant Dream at December 10, 2006 2:47 PM

Have to agree this is a technology that could be scary in the hands of a ruthless government, like that of Jean "me, I like the pepper on the plate" Chretien.

And tomax7's uncalled for attack on Slim Whitman, the most high pitched yodeller in country music history,... well!!

Law of unintended consequences (otherwise known as Murphy's Law)

You just know that there is a fringe group out there that will actually enjoy it. Sort of like Moths to a flame... Sad.

Posted by: Fergy at December 10, 2006 3:06 PM

As a capitalist, I need to invent SPF 3000 lotion so no lefties get a nasty burn.

Posted by: Fergy at December 10, 2006 3:12 PM

I remember reading over 30 years ago about the possibilities of using microwaves in crowd control. In the particular article, however, it was suggested that microwaves could be used to induce mass incontinence in a crowd. One would love to see such a device unleashed on the ubiquitous crowds that turn out for CNN in the Middle East; then the water cannons can be used for less violent purposes.

Posted by: Roseberry at December 10, 2006 4:00 PM

Ah, h, e, double hockey sticks. The do gooders will probably outlaw this as cruel and make it illegal to use. Remember the neutron bomb? A nice and clean device that killed the enemy and left the infrastructure intact with no lasting radiation. It was outlawed. go figure.

You're welcome, The Spellnazi

That was the run setting ... DO YOU WANT TO SEE THE ROAST SETTING?

Imagine the consequences if this technology fell into the wrongs hands: rogue states, terrorists, a Liberal or NDP government. It'd be "bye-bye freedom of assembly."

Yeah, like we couldn't already do the same thing right now.

Buddy, I don't care how effective this device is at producing "prompt and highly motivated escape behavior", I can gaurantee you that a 50 Calibre HMG does the job just as well, PLUS it leaves a nice mess behind, which serves as a good warning not to try it again.

If the government wants to take away your rights, they don't need "non lethal weapons" to do it. This weapon is designed to be used when you're NOT trying to harm people. If you're already taking away their rights, you won't care much about harming them.

This must be the new "Warm and Fuzzy" method of crowd control we've been hearing about ever since Remington came up with plastic buckshot back in the 70's.

Bomb strapped to ones self must have some ill effect as well to those all around.....yes...no?

Posted by: gl1800 at December 10, 2006 7:07 PM

It is scary to think that gov can use this to control civil protest, not saying they WILL, but they could.

I prefer Le Wretch just grabbing people by the throat and throttling them as opposed to this.

Yipe!

I'm guessing that you guys think that getting roasted by an American microwave beam won't cause any Iraqis to get so pissed that they start to hate Americans and begin to actively support the insurgents.

Or, you realize that this weapon will make Americans even more hated than ever, which will cause attacks against Americans and against anyone associated with them to become more frequent and more horrific, and you think this is a good thing because whoever is in charge in Washington can use the increasing terrorist attacks as a handy pretext to expand government and diminish Americans' freedoms even more than before.

Did you rootin' tootin' hard-"right"-thinking folks read the comments over at the Wired.com site? Did you see the comments from lefties drooling about how they can't wait to get it in their hands so they can roast abortion protestors?

The moral high ground ... it's so precious we have to defend it with radiation weapons.

Posted by: Justzumgai at December 10, 2006 8:17 PM

When a crowd is being moved forward and serve as human shields for either riflemen or homicide bombers, it makes sense that it's a good thing to use. Probably be a good thing to stop the nut bars from burning down your embassy too.

Non-lethal weapons are interesting, especially with the "bombs in a week" info.

Posted by: Pat at December 10, 2006 8:29 PM

Does it come with a DEFROST setting?

Posted by: Big Jack Attack at December 10, 2006 8:42 PM

Justzumgai is right. Shoot the f*ckers dead ... be done with it.

User:JzG, is that you?

Posted by: theProject at December 11, 2006 3:41 AM

...what ever happened to the low FM signal the cops were going to use on crowds?

I remember a study and it being showcased on Discovery channel as a non-lethal way to disrupt crowds.

The low pulse signal makes people feel a bit 'woosy' but doesn't induce vomiting or anything like that.

Rather have that hit me than a melbatoast wave.

Posted by: tomax7 at December 11, 2006 7:34 AM

"Justzumgai" I happen to be a real live 'merican serviceman, and you have no clue. Sort of like MSM reporters who never leave their hotel but are now experts on warfare, Islam, and civil war. Give me a freakin' break! What would you like Kinetic weapons or non-lethal?

Posted by: S. Baker at December 11, 2006 8:44 AM

"According to documents obtained for Wired News under federal sunshine laws, the Air Force's Active Denial System, or ADS, has been certified safe after lengthy tests by military scientists in the lab and in war games.

The ADS shoots a beam of millimeters waves, which are longer in wavelength than x-rays but shorter than microwaves -- 94 GHz (= 3 mm wavelength) compared to 2.45 GHz (= 12 cm wavelength) in a standard microwave oven."

My Professional EEE training will not allow me to accept this as truth unless the testing was purposely incomplete or non inclusve of full amplitude tests. The frequency range has been proven dangerous for some years now and exposure can mutate cell reproduction and DNA...it's a matter of exposure time and amplitude...these Military types lie routinely about health effects of their technology and there are legions of health afflicted veterns who have used formerly pronouced "safe" technologies who can testify they were lied to about potential lethality and health risks of things the army had pronounced safe to use.

The fact that this is being used in Iraq tells me that (following US Military and their vendor cartel's MO) this is just a "field trial" where they get out of the lab an zapping rats to use this tech on people.... and if the subjects they dose with this weapon do not immediately explode or vaporize...they will declare it a "safe" weapon for crowd control and we will be seing these deadly things in our own streets shorty shutting down govrnment protests and free political expression...man what the FEMA goon squads whould have given to unleash one of these babies on the suffering populace of NOLA after Katrina made them Gods in a domestic war zone...weapons like this are a control freak's wet dream...just point and shoot and hundreds of people drop and you get off scott free on murder charges because yout victims walk away from the hit....now if these exposed "controlled crowds" develop early and odd cancers and other ailments months and years later, they can't come back at you because the weapons technology was "certified" in Iraq by the army....gimme a frikkin' break.

If you dolt's think this is a "safe" weapon then be the first to stand in front of it and prove your faith in the scumbag cartels that develop and use such flakey unscrutinized technologoes.

G'wan stand in front of it and take a hit ...it's safe!! The Army sez so! Same for DU rounds, agent orange, mercury, low frequency radiation and mil grade anti bio toxin immunogens...they're all safe..the army sez so!

Posted by: WL Mackenzie Redux at December 11, 2006 11:21 AM

I pretty much agree with WL Mackenzie for a change. Personaly I don't find much reason to rejoice when the state gets its hands on more effective tools of control.

Posted by: Jose at December 11, 2006 12:08 PM

WL..."these Military types lie routinely about health effects of their technology and there are legions of health afflicted veterns"

How true. Anyone remember Agent Orange? Or the Nevada tests on military personnell?

Tested on unprotected soliders. Hey, cheaper than lab rats and ya don't have PETA on your case.
