Who are you calling a gringo?

"A recurring false etymology for the derivation of gringo states that it originated during the Mexican-American War of 1846-48. It has been claimed that Gringo comes from "green coat" and was used in reference to the American soldiers and the green color of their uniforms. Yet another story, from Mexico, holds that Mexicans with knowledge of the English language used to write "greens go home" on street walls referring to the color of the uniforms of the invading army; subsequently, it became a common habitual action for the rest of the population to yell "green go" whenever U.S. soldiers passed by. This is an example of an invented explanation, because gringo was used in Spanish long before the war and during the Mexican-American War. Additionally, the U.S. Army did not use green uniforms at the time, but blue ones."

You’ll be green with envy. Go BC.

Posted by: Bernie at November 12, 2006 12:06 PM

The ferocious gophers are coming to eat the cute little pussy cats.... mmmm stir fry.

Gonna be a close one 'cus BC has home field (unlike Calgary)

Riders by 3.

Look for McCallum to miss a 20 yarder, Dickenson to suffer his 3rd concussion against the riders front 4 and Pierce to mount a valiant effort that almost gets there.

Fun facts.
-Dickenson hasn't played 4 quarters since July.
-Lions had 5 losses this year. 1 and 3 vs the Riders.
-2 good place kickers.... 2 bad punters.
-Riders won the last 2 games against BC in 2005 but lost to BC in overtime. Missed (short) kick by guess who?
-Gophers eat meat too... muhahaha

Hey , did anyone see Ralf Klien comment on Belinda Stronach not having a conservative bone in her body , well , maybe one.

I thought that that remark was quite appropriate because it is normal behaviour to give a Dog a bone.

All right its finally time to feed the Riders (RODANT BADGERS) to the LIONS.
Any score predictions out there?
I predict as long as the Lions prevail by one point it will be another great day in "Paradise".
Now as a consolation prize you can bring all the Liberal and Lefties back to the flat lands of the Rodant.
Go Lefties Go and take the Riders with you!
What ever happens the CFL is still a much better game than the NFL.

The politically correct predication for the western final is as follows:

According to Wikipedia, the Saskatchewan "team name comes from a Northwest Mounted Police force (based in Regina) who were called Roughriders based on the fact that they rode wild broncos while on duty". Everyone knows it is wrong to try to tame these beautiful natural animals.

The BC team on the other hand is named after the majestic mountain lion (cougar).

Take the Lions by 10.

The politically correct method of predicating football contest is 98.3% accurate.

East: Winnipeg 28 Toronto 15

batting 1000!

This week will be no exception; West B.C Lions 42 Small furry animals 21

East: Montreal 28 Hogtown 24

Grey cup B.C.31 Montreal 18

You can take this to the bank!

The story I heard about the origin of the word 'gringo'was that it came from Argentina during the British occupation of Buenos Aires for a couple of years in the Napoleonic Wars. The British soldiers used to sing a song called 'Green grow the rushes, oh' when they were marching around and it was corrupted to 'gringo'.

Handy reference guide for the BC "fan":

Your team is called the Lions. They wear orange, black, silver and white.

When they are in possession of the ball, that is called your "offense", alternately when the other team has the ball the BC team is on "defense". Do cheer when on "defense", do not cheer when on "offense".

Just trying to help,

Who do you think the BC Lions will beat in the Grey Cup this year?

BTW: 34 Lions 23 Losers.

At least Sask can take comfort in knowing they were beat by the best ... game was closer than the score indicated ...etc etc

GO GREEN! It would be just like BC to get all cocky and overconfident. Truth is... if Saskatchewan is on their game, BC will get their ass handed to them on a plate.

Either way, it'll make for a good game.

Posted by: spooky at November 12, 2006 2:33 PM

I just don't get football. Why do these manly men keep patting each others' butts so much? Does this encourage greater production somehow, like making them kick better or something? It's all so not baseball. Sigh.

Posted by: Iron Lady at November 12, 2006 2:41 PM

Lance, B.C.s cheerleaders could beat the Gophers.

B.C. 38 ,Gophers 21

Regardless of who wins, I'll still cheer for the West next week, and for *****'s sake, get a new mascot for next season.

Posted by: dmorris at November 12, 2006 3:24 PM

I agree dmorris. Leo the Lion is looking a tad mangy and has got to go!

I have to say that the Riders have, by far, the very best fans in the league.

For that reason, allow me to be the first to share your collective pain and express my deep sympathy for the about-to-be realized results of today's game.

I don't think she is really rodentophiliac.

Posted by: jdill at November 12, 2006 5:40 PM

The history of the Roughriders is probably the most colourful of all spoerts team.
The name Roughriders is in deed associated with Teddy Roosevelt and his Roughriders, as many Canadians rode with Teddy.Their colours were red and black , the green replaced red during WWII when red dye was in short supply due to the war effort .

Posted by: Simeon Drakich at November 12, 2006 5:41 PM

There won't be any miraculous 2nd half comeback this game. Lions are outplaying the Riders in every aspect of the game. Sigh. Good thing I didn't make any bets on this game.

Good on you Lions.

Cheers,
lance

I thought there was a rule regarding home crowd noise during the opposing teams snap or is that only in Professional football?
I haven't played a lot of football but I remember that bit of quarterback communication being very important.

Posted by: Mike_RoA at November 12, 2006 6:08 PM

14 pts in the 3rd quarter . . . maybe I spoke too soon. :)

Posted by: lance at November 12, 2006 6:37 PM

All I can say is the Lions better kick ass next week. It might be the last time the Montreal team plays in the CFL, if Iggy gets his way and Que becomes a nation. It would only be right for them to go out with a big loss.

Posted by: maryT at November 12, 2006 7:14 PM

45-18

It's too bad Sask.had the "first half from hell", as they showed what they can do in the second. They never quit, gutsy team.

As for Danny Barrett, the coach can only play the team management gives him. He's a class act.

Saskatchewan needs to fire their Premier, not their football coach.

Posted by: dmorris at November 12, 2006 7:21 PM

Oh well, another year at the GC without the Riders....ugh! My fav eastern team lost too....ugh! At least the leafs are winning....but ya gotta feel for those sens......ha ha ha!

Here's something to help you get over your football blues: A researcher took digital photos of four thousand NDP voters, and averaged out all the features to create a single composite individual. The result is really quite interesting, well worth checking out.

I was worried about a suspended NFL player playing for Toronto, having a great game and a winning play in the Grey Cup.

That would not have been good for the CFL.

Another year, another Grey Cup without the Roughriders. Anyone see a pattern here? It would seem the Roughriders are all nice guys who have their moments, but otherwise are content to be doormatts. As for BC and the Alouettes next Sunday, its a shame they can't both lose.

Posted by: noddyrules at November 13, 2006 2:04 PM

what pattern, 2 grey cups in 60 years, a pattern of losing. fire Barker, Hopson. Barrett and most of the incompetent coaching staff. do not renew your season tickets. lets call a spade a spade here. these guys stink. there is only one bigger looser than the riders, THE WESTERN CANADA MONTREAL CANADIANS FAN CLUB. i will save my money and not go to any games next year. i will choose to spend my money at a lake somewhere and enjoy the summer. history will prove this prediction right, shivers, tillman or any body else, the community owned football team concept will fail year after year. too many fat cats in upper management lapping at the titty. the only other job these guys could get is working for a Sask. crown utility. last but not least, the kicker, great place kicker but not worth a s it at punting. it has been only 18 games but they have all winter to analyze it on instant replay.
