Those who pledged the top price were promised the 'Birthday Chair Package', with the best seating for the concert as well as a chance to have photographs taken with Mr Clinton during a round of golf and a three-day series of cocktail, brunch and dinner parties.

The minimum price, with inferior concert seats and no brunch, was set at $60,000 (£31,000). But with many rich Democrats sending their regrets, The Mail on Sunday can reveal that last Wednesday the Clintons drastically slashed prices to $12,500 (£6,500) for one reception and the concert, or $5,000 (£2,600) for just the Stones.

With the looming possibility of Bill and his long-suffering wife and daughter finding themselves amid a sea of empty chairs at the 2,900-seat Manhattan venue, tickets then went on sale to the public for as little as $1,710 (£900).

And there is a danger that the Clintons' plans may end in a total fiasco, after the Stones cancelled Friday's show in Atlantic City when Mick Jagger complained of a sore throat and was ordered to rest by a doctor.

Buying Hercs is the ultimate no-brainer. They are one of the great aircraft of all time, certainly the best medium transport of all time. From the aviation literature, I gather that the 130J model is a worthwhile continuation of this great line, and the only aircraft which could beat the earlier models of Herc.

I am willing to bet that when the 130J is replaced, 15 or 20 years from now, it will be with -- a C-130K?

EADS are going to take years to dig themselves out of the A380 mess, if they ever do. Buying a new aircraft from them that hasn't even flown is the ultimate in moonbat cluelessness.

Small wonder people don't find Mercer funny. He isn't a comic - just a jerk with a smirk. His schtick is strictly ridicule.

I find it amusing that the NDP is attacking the conservatives over buying an airplane that the U.S. turned down. You can be sure that if the U.S. had the same plane they would be howling about Harper being just like Bush.

Airbus is in crisis over the A380 (super jumbo) as the French and Germans are trading barbs as to who is repsonible for the delays. They only have roughly half the orders booked to break-even.

Add to that none of Japan's international carriers want to buy them ... perhaps because Japan's export market to the US is too large to jeopardize by buying French.

In Canada's case it makes sense (unless you are a Liberal) to buy from the US ,as 80-90% of our exports go to the US , so why on earth would we jeopardize that.

In addition the US military uses the same aircraft , so in a pinch one could get spare parts or a spare plane in an emergency.

Calgary Rob: I've got an even better design for a medium transport than even the A-400. All I need is an order and I'll build the thing. My plane actually has more of a chance of being delivered and performing than the A-400.

A working plane with an open manufacturing line is a much better option than a plane that isn't finished the design phase. You need around 100% or more improvement to justify going for a paper airplane over a working one. The massive numbers of Hercs in existence, and our own experience with them, ups the relative performance. Being able to cadge parts off of the Brits and the Yanks, the 2 powers that we are absolutley guaranteed to be working with on every deployment, and who have bases EVERYWHERE that can be used for repairs... Well I think we're more in the realm of 200-300% performance improvement being required before looking at a paper plane. Then there's the wild success that multinational planes have had. Typhoon, A380, A350, Eurocopter, A400... they are all late (some ridiculously so), have had massive design changes, partners and customers bailing out, those that have been delivered have all been down specced, they all cost more than projected, are hard to maintain, and very expensive ongoing projects as there is so little volume to keep the factories going so the costs of replacement parts and trainers must cover what should be coming through in new orders!

Other than that, the A400 is a great plane!

The fact that the beasts are still flying is a testaement to both the quality of the aircraft and the canucks who maintain them. What better to replace it than an updated version of a proven design or would you prefer something that hasn't flown?

What the US Army is looking for is a smaller tactical lift aircraft. They are in need of the Buffalo or Caribou from DeHavilland (or the newer versions of them).

The report by Akin is at best poor journalism, at worst spin of the worst kind. Perhaps he should go back to writing speaches for Taliban Jack.

The Canadian C-130 fleet is not comprised of one model, it is made up of older E models that need replacing, and thirteen H models that are relatively new and more capable than the J model. What is not well understood by the public is that the J model is a totally different aircraft from the legacy Hercules, it was designed as a commercial aircraft, different engines, props, systems, etc. I have flown the legacy Herc, it is a great airplane. The J model has problems. It was removed from the US JCA competition because it does not have a valid certification - this is not a minor item, this is major. It has not been certified to airdrop equipment or supplies - the resupply drop in Afghanistan that made the MSM could not have been done in a J model - despite six years of trials, they are still not cleared to operationally drop equipment. The Australians do not haul ammo in their J models because of vibration problems.
With all this in mind, the most logical approach for the Canadian Military would be to purchase four low time H models to augment their other relatively new H models (that would give them the 17 aircraft that they say they need) and fly them for the next twenty years. The USAF plans to do just that with aircraft of similar vintage and flight hours. In ten years time, they can take another look at it, and see if the J model has fixed its problems, or if the A400M is a realistic option. There is no rush, the CF needs other equipment on a far more urgent basis than they need to replace the H models.

The Eid sexual harassment incident

I didn't want to write about this.

Hell, I didn't even want to know about it.

I remember the first time I heard of it while I was in Amman. Eblis sent me an e-mail titled "Behold the revolution in Egypt" with a link to malek's post on it and I stupidly clicked on it and was presented with a reality that I didn't want or desire to confront.

The story is as follows for the those of you who didn't hear about it: It was the first day of Eid, and a new film was opening downtown. Mobs of males gatherd trying to get in, but when the show was sold out, they decided they will destroy the box office. After accomplishing that, they went on what can only be described as a sexual frenxy: They ran around grabbing any and every girl in sight, whether a niqabi, a Hijabi or uncoverd. Whether egyptian or foreigner. Even pregnant ones. They grabbed them, molested them, tried to rip their cloths off and rape them, all in front of the police, who didn't do shit. The good people of downtown tried their best to protect the girls. Shop owners would let the girls in and lock the doors, while the mobs tried to break in. Taxi drivers put the girls in the cars while the mobs were trying to break the glass and grab the girls out. It was a disgusting pandamonium of sexual assaults that lasted for 5 houres from 7:30 PM to 12:30 am, and it truns my stomach just to think about it.

I called my father when I heard of that happening, and he informed me that he didn't hear of it at all. They watched Al Jazeerah, CNN, flipped through opposition newspapers, and nothing. Nada. Nobody mentioned it. As if it didn't happen.

But it did.

The bloggers available downtown documented the whole thing, and provided pictures of it as well. Reading their accounts I can't help by feel my heart being torn on what the people of the country has turned to. The one that broke my heart the most was Sharqawi's account (remember, he is the guy who got sexually assaulted by the police during interrogation ) and how it suddenly danwed at him that what happend to him wasn;t an isolated incident. That The Police forces didn;t came from another planet, that they were born and raised egyptians, amongst the egyptian people, the same egyptian people who have produced those mobs who found it in their right to attack girls in middle of crowded downtown for 5 houres under the police's watchdul eyes. The ones who approached the police asking them to do something were told : "what do you want us to do? It's Eid. Happy Eid to you too!" ...- via LGF

Some Supreme Court judges seek relief from work stress in the comfort of their families. Others love nothing more than to curl up with a good book. And could it be, for at least one of them, a nude romp on the high seas was just the ticket?

The anonymous judge's alleged unconventional vacation choice -- a nude cruise -- came to light in a San Francisco Chronicle travel article in the spring. It quoted a co-owner of the Bare Necessities cruise line, Nancy Tiemann, as saying that its clientele include: "actors, bus drivers, Fortune 500 CEOs, soccer moms, doctors, teachers, priests and at least one Canadian Supreme Court justice."

The April 2 article said that 40,000 people have stripped down so far for Bare Necessities' 38 cruises, and that passengers "can choose to be nude anywhere -- in the pool, at the blackjack table, while singing karaoke -- with the exception of the formal dining room, where clothes are required."

The story came to the attention of Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin, who swiftly launched an investigation into which, if any, of her eight colleagues was the alleged unrobed sailor.

In an e-mail to the author of the article, Chronicle deputy travel editor Spud Hilton, an assistant to Chief Justice McLachlin said: "Dear Spud. We here at the Supreme Court of Canada read with great interest your article on nude cruising. You mentioned 'at least one Canadian Supreme Court judge' has taken part, based on your conversation with Nancy Tiemann.

"We were curious, to say the least, and are wondering if you can say who those justices were," said the e-mail, a copy of which was supplied by Mr. Hilton. "Or, perhaps the co-ordinates for Ms. Tiemann, if she is the source of the info."

According to Supreme Court Justice Marshall Rothstein, the investigation ran aground at this point. Speaking to an audience at the University of Toronto law school last week, Judge Rothstein read a tongue-in-cheek memo which Chief Justice McLachlin circulated to her Supreme Court colleagues on May 12.

Could Mr. Elmhirst's hesitation be with the fact that him and Mr. Bornman still remain friends?
