Interesting concept on the MSM time vs. blog time.

Podhoretz says the MSM relies on polling and is therefore behind the times, but then goes and points out how bloggers are more current because they pick up on the trees instead of the forest, noting the details and the subtle shifts that precede the bigger shifts recognized in time-delayed polling.

Even if that is true, the problem with the article is that Podhoretz tries to prove his point by noting that bloggers are basing their views in large part... on polls, polls which are reported in... the MSM.

And his one example of non-polling change is to say that Ford is showing desparation now. I don't know anything about the Republican and Democrat senatorial candidates, but Podhoretz shows a classic MSM arrogance in simply stating that Ford is showing desperation, implying he has seen the indisputable evidence leading to this conclusion that we must all accept without giving us this evidence so we can judge for ourselves. Classic MSM reporting.

Somewhat ironic that he calls Ford desperate when Republican Senate candidate Bob Corker has put up an ad that makes the worst of the Liberal and Conservative nastiness in the last Canadian election look like playschool, including a bizarre slam on Canada: http://canadiancerberus.blogspot.com/2006/10/republican-ad-smears-canada.html.

Podhoretz may be right about blog-time but he hasn't proven it in this article which makes the article seem more like classic partisan MSM spinmaking than new age reporting.

In today’s TorStar papers, coverage is given to the frustration in the Ontario Legislature where the (Liberal) Speaker is accused of failure to rein in insults hurled by Liberals while punishing only the opposition members.

In defense of all members, Premier McGuinty offers the following:

"But Premier Dalton McGuinty, who effectively anointed both Curling and Brown, has no plans to either rein in his more vociferous cabinet ministers or replace the Speaker.

"People are hurling words at each other — not stones or worse. So it's a great system," McGuinty said.

"Sometimes we can become overly enthusiastic, but I wouldn't exchange it for any other," the premier added.

(Source: Toronto Star, “War of Words Erupts over Speaker”, Oct. 24/06)

Can I suggest that Premier McGuinty pass those comments over to his brother, Federal MP David McGuinty, who was the origin of the “dog” reference last week? Dare we suggest that the Premier has a better grasp on the reality of parliamentary theatre than his offended brother?

The Sherwood Community Ass'n (RM of Sherwood) These two combined don't mix, The Ass'n (drop the 'n) is another "activist", against everything, left wing, we know better, group of moonbats that have worked for three years to destroy the elected council, they did get a couple of their clowns elected last term. One of whom (Wallyboy) is running for reive this election.

Another Belinda rumour: An organizer of Martha Hall Findley's Liberal leadership campaign was asked if Martha was going to run in the London by-election. The answer was that Martha has been quietly promised to be the Liberal candidate in the next general election in Belinda's Aurora/Newmarket riding, where Martha lives and where she, herself was sked to step aside as the Liberal candidate for Belinda after the floor crossing. The backroom story lines about Belinda not running again are being developed. They range from Belinda's health, to family concerns with her children or a combination to tug at the heart strings and seem believable. She will most likely even have to shed a few tears on camera and all of that and her Daddy will have the appropriate people enhance the story.

However, the true story is that Belinda wants to travel around the world with Bill Clinton's poverty/Aids charity money giveaway being the Mother Teresa of charity- going to give the poor African women wool for their knitting?

Very very interesting huh?

Funny how the media rushes to publish race info that portrays whitey getting a leg up on blacks. See Katrina story below:

Yet the media goes out of its way to suppress reports on race stats that may portray minorities in an unfavourable light (e.g. crime stats)

Big press conferences on the Hill today re SSM. Wouldn't it be great if all those supporting this had to declare if they are gay or lesbian or in a SS relationship. Due to all the gay lobbying in the past few years, and watching them on TV, I now feel capable of deciding who is or isn't gay. I am probably wrong in a few cases, but they speak in squeaky voices, body language is feminine, bad hair styles, etc. The women are usually fat and ugly and also have bad hair styles. Don't blame me for these conclusions, they have done it to themselves. Glad I wont be here in about 20 years, when the govt is sued by the children of these unions for the abuse they went thru, the discrimination they went thru, or the reason their SS parents lifestyle led them to a life of crime. For those that don't believe this, go back and research all the articles etc warning of the dangers of tolerance, multiculturalism, abortion, making homosexuality legal, and all the rest of the crap PET shoved down our throat.

MSM time requires a week or more of stories to be circulated which support a particualar bias ( theirs ) before the poll is conducted to support the position they are promoting.

Blog time ... requires only the posting of an opinion or report to begin an immediate accumulation of responses.
Bloggers don't have the luxury of a captive audience to prep for the programmed response.

So why is it a surprise that CDC got taken in by one of the oldest technical scams around? After all, this is an agency of a former government that got sucked in by the Kyoto scam and a current government that continues to pay lip service to the specious "science" of anthropogenic climate change. BTW, where were all those killer hurricanes that the Chicken Littles were predicting this summer because of global warming. I wonder if Ms Ambrose could comment on that one. Gaza fishermen risk Israeli fire

For more than three months the Israelis have ordered all fishing craft to stay in port.
...
The fishermen though have no doubt that this is an example of what a UN human rights observer recently described as "collective punishment" in the territory.
...
Tens of thousands of Gazans depend on fishing, and - as their desperation has mounted - some have been putting out to sea regardless of the ban.
...
But there is always the danger that the gunboats will move in.

And Mr Habeel says that is what happened last week when he and his crewmates were fishing off the town of Dier Ballah.

He says a gunboat steamed up from the south. According to Mr Habeel, it did not issue any verbal warning, but opened fire first at the cables holding the nets - cutting them adrift. Then he says the Israelis circled the unarmed fishermen spraying their craft with machine gun fire from no more than 20m away.
...
The Israelis say that on the day in question boats had been pushing too far out to sea. On a number of occasions warning shots were fired.

"We did not identify in any situation any of our warning shots hitting a boat - at all," said a military spokeswoman. "So we are not aware of any fisherman being hit."

But later, as the trawler lays beached for repairs in Gaza City harbour, well over 100 bullet holes are clearly visible.

I bought a gas saving gadget for my old 93 taurus.

it consisted of a stainless steel short tube affair with fins that went into the air intake just before the injectors. it caused a vortex effect as shown by the smoke injected into the air in the demo on the commercial. it was sold as an aid to the better mixing of the air/gas vapours.

a vortex will do this; I dont know what effect it had on the mileage. I wish the f SOMEONE 'out there' could perform the preferable 3rd party analysis and evaluation of these gadgets to give us the numbers.

it cost my about 100 bucks and was so easy to install the mechanic didnt charge me anything.

Posted by: qwerty at October 24, 2006 8:13 PM

qwerty....

Vortex in the intake is a detriment to airflow.
Vortex slows down the airflow and thus makes the intake less efficient.

In carb systems mixture is determined by the carberator design. In Fuel Injection systems (port) by the intake manifold and the injector controls.
Any gearhead who knows the first thing about induction systems knows that upgrades to induction involve removing obstructions and designing out turbulence in the intake airstream.

Hence performance accessories that work include things like: larger/stiffer/straighter/smoother intake tubes throttle bodies and manifolds....things that take real engineering to make right and cost $$$.

Dear Jack Layton,

You sit there in your quiet home, no fear is in your heart,

You sleep soundly certain that it won't be blown apart.

Your children they can go to school and play out in the park,

They've never seen a bomb explode, heard air raids in the dark.

They've never seen dead bodies piled up on the street,

Your wife, she won't be beaten, treated like a piece of meat.

You are free to form opinions, read any news print you can see,

You enjoy your rights and privileges in this country wide and free.

The reason you can live like that is because I fight your wars,

I fight and push the enemy back, I keep them off our shores.

Some 800,000 people were killed in 100 days

A former senior Rwandan diplomat has told a tribunal that France played an active role in Rwanda's 1994 genocide.

France has denied playing any role in the 100-day frenzy of killing in which 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus died.

Jack Layton's wet dream is coming true in Afghanistan - you think he'd focus on that and not 'puppy-gate'. How bloody shallow. Not a word of it in any of the canadian press I've seen either.

The British have surrendered in Musa Qala - er negotiated a withdrawl & are in the process of negotiating a withdrawl from Sangeen/Sangin and unnamed other places.

The Taliban of course are claiming victory and threatening death to the infidel if they ever return to those towns.

How much Canadian blood was shed to secure those towns? What king of ally is Britain that it can turn over that territory to the Taliban? What's going to happen when the British turn over command of the mission to the famously brave Dutch later this month? We all know how what kind of courage they've shown in the face of Islamist terror (think about the recently exiled Hirsi Ali).

If this is a NATO mission you'd think we'd get some kind of say in something like this. If we didn't - why not? If we did - then who gave the go-ahead to talk with the Taliban?

The company's job postings state that a number of positions are restricted to people who comply with the International Traffic in Arms Regulations, which prevent dual citizens from 17 countries, including China, Cuba, Syria and Lebanon, from working on U.S. military contracts.

Of the 20 Canadian jobs posted on CAE's website this month, eight require applicants to "comply with" or "be eligible to meet requirements of" ITAR....

Saint-Pierre and Miquelon (France)

Collectivité territoriale de Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon

In 1977, Canada increased its jurisdiction to 200 nautic miles. Saint-Pierre did the same but a dispute started because of the proximity of Newfoundland. The crisis grew more acrimonious when Canada decided to avoid overfishing. In 1987, the French trawlers were no longer allowed to call at the Canadian ports. The islanders started the "Codfish Crusade" and fished into forbidden areas. The French trawlers were inspected, fishers and elected members were jailed in Canada. In 1994, France and Canada signed an agreement that suppressed the industrial fishing in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon.

Spending, not sloth, ails Quebec

....Or take booking off sick, known to Statscan as "days lost." Quebec has the worst record of any province. Quebec workers lose 11.2 days a year, Ontario workers 8.6 days, the lowest level (along with Alberta and Prince Edward Island) in the country. But do lost days measure workers' laziness or management's incentives? Why is it that, across the entire country, public sector workers book off much more often than private sector workers? And the frequency continues to increase. Five years ago, public sector workers took 10.2 days off a year; now they take 12.2 days. Five years ago, health care workers booked off 12.8 days a year; now they book off 14.2 days. In contrast, professional and managerial workers last year took only 5.3 days...

The war in Iraq is a "pure failure" that has left Iraqis in a worse state than when they lived under Saddam Hussein, former United Nations chief weapons inspector Hans Blix said in comments published Wednesday.

also from CBCpravda. shows those dirty hardworkers in Alberta should be supporting duffism in PEI. duffism is sitting on your duff, and in PEI if means sitting and eating. Its not a culture of defeat , its a culture of de dole.

By province, Alberta has by far the hardest workers, with a per capita GDP of $54,000. Ontario comes second, with a per capita GDP of $40,000. Prince Edward Island comes in last with a per capita GDP of $28,000.

But Prince Edward Island has better lobsters than Alberta, with more time to enjoy them.

Hans Blix is the failure IMHO. We have a 6.7Billion surplus to date, and all the libs at the g&m are crying, saying cut my taxes. FYI, income taxes are not the only revenue going into ottawas coffers. What about the taxes on smokes, gas, lottery tickets, gst, excise, imports and exports, and so many others. They are still flogging the supposed tax cut dithers put in during the election, forgetting the reduced amount allowed for NRTCs. Surprising how surpluses increase when all the money is going where it is supposed to go, and not into liberal brown bags. This surplus occurred after the gst cut, which was supposed to cripple us. There are so many taxes that could be cut, but poor Que might not get so much of our money. I see the Bloc is threatening to bring down the govt if they don't get their money. Isn't that blackmail. Harper should call his bluff, and tell him fine, go ahead, but if we get our majority, or another minority, Que will get nothing. I really can't see Ont voting liberal with the knowledge that if they win, they will be taxed to death to pay Que.

Church to hold service for slain Muslim woman
Mercury News ^ | 10/25/06 | Lisa Fernandez

NO ARREST IN SHOOTING OF AFGHAN MOTHER

A Fremont church will host a memorial service Saturday for Alia Ansari, 38, the Afghan woman who was shot in the head as she picked up three of her six children from Glenmoor Elementary School.

Ansari was killed Thursday at the corner of Glenmoor Drive and Central Avenue. A ``person of interest'' has been questioned and is in custody on a separate parole violation. But no one has been arrested in connection with her death.

Tuesday, Fremont police said there was no change in the status of the 27-year-old Fremont man; he was at Santa Rita Jail on a parole hold.

Pastor Bruce Green, who is a facilitator between Christians and Muslims, visited the Ansari family Monday evening and asked Ansari's husband, Ahmad, if he would like to use the Centerville Presbyterian Church's gymnasium to host a community gathering honoring his wife.

According to Green, Ahmad Ansari said yes. Ahmad Ansari has declined to speak to the media about his wife's death. Green reached out to the family on Eid al-Fitr, a Muslim celebration after the monthlong fast of Ramadan. Despite the family's grief, Green said he was treated as an honored guest. ...-

For once Sheila (Copps) has it right. All of it: 'The veil is a barrier to the world.' today -Sun Media.

I was wondering, after reading on the wknd that Dalton McSquinty is in favour of the rights of Muslim women to wear veils, if perhaps, younger gen. muslims would actually appreciate politicians who would pave the way to a relaxation of these customs imposed by the older gen?

Interesting that this piece of cut and paste ‘journalism’ makes no mention of Chantal Hebert's many columns on the Ignatieff/ Liberal Leadership issue...

Why not?

Guess the brains trust at Tyee prefers the Edmonton Sun for news and the National Post and Ken Whyte's Macleans for opinion pieces.
I'm surprised you didn't quote Mark Steyn.

White seems to be trying to collect all his old Nat'l Post cronies in one place again.

Nice of the Tyee to give all of them – each one saying pretty much the same thing – another spot on the media dial.

I'm also surprised Warnica didn't quote the Western Standard: Ezra Levant must have an opinion about this.

Hebert's columns have been discussed in comments here at Tyee for weeks. And she actually has a ‘Quebec’ perspective.

Some "big story"!" ...-

Belmont Club: MSM in Iraq. ...-

Being there

Michael Fumento has a long piece on the way the war in Iraq has been covered by the media.

He begins by matter-of-factly recapping his experiences as an embed, then examining articles in national magazines and shows that, despite their hair-raising prose they are actually prosaic accounts of arrivals at the airport, the armored bus trip to the hotel and paranoia at the downstairs bar. Nothing actually happens, but the shadows lengthen everywhere. Fumento however, doesn't turn it into a diatribe on the subject of manliness versus caution. He freely admits there are MSM journalists in dangerous locations, the problem being that they are comparatively few in number. The real issue he raises is the question of whether information gathered from the Green Zone is a reliable way to build up a picture of events. ...-

Michael Fumento is a veteran of the 27th Engineer Brigade (Combat) (Airborne) and has been embedded three times in the western Iraqi region of Al Anbar. Read Michael Fumento's additional writing on the military, on Iraq, and on the media, and view his Spring 2006 Iraq photos from both the Fallujah area and Ramadi. View his 2005 Iraq photos.

Re the lottery scam. These winners were all from ONT weren't they. Why should we be surprised with all the support the corrupt liberals get from there. They must have considered it their entitlements. Wonder if they bought gum. Why not make all those selling lotto tickets inelligible to buy, like Readers Digest contest, Publishers contests and so many others. Simple thing is to sign your ticket, in ink.

From: Western Standard Blog ....

The Column the London Free Press Would Not Print

My friend, Rory Leishman, is a social conservative. Given my libertarian tendencies, it isn't surprising we clash on many topics having to do with censorship. My own view is basically that consenting adults should be free to do what they want. His is.... considerably different, and yet we remain friends.

Rory writes a column that is published bi-weekly in the London Free Press and many other papers in Canada. They declined to publish his latest, however. Here is a message he sent to his friends, along with the column itself. I don't think I will want to see the show he mentions, but I am happy to have the Grand Theatre try whatever it wants, so long as paying customers have some idea of what they are in for and so long as they don't try to get me to pay for it through my taxes (hah!). Rory disagrees.

Dear All:

The London Free Press has decided not to run the following column that was slated for publication on Tuesday, October 24. I have received the following explanation from an acting editorial-page editor at the paper:

"In consultation with (Free Press Editor in Chief) Paul Berton, we've held your column for Tuesday. It would appear from your brief description that you hadn't gone to the play, and must have been relying on the reports, reviews etc that Sonja Smits was "naked" on stage - which she was. However, having talked to people who did go and weren't scandalized, comparing that to the goings on in a strip club is simply over the top."

It's true that I did not attend the play. Indeed, I have no wish to do so, but I disagree with the editor's judgment in refusing to run the column. Let me know what you think.

Cheers, Rory

Islam: a religion of hatred of women. ...-

"Australian Muslim Leader: Women Are Satan's Weapons

Medieval misogyny from the highest Islamic authority in Australia: Muslim leader blames women for sex attacks. (Hat tip: LGF readers.)

THE nation’s most senior Muslim cleric has blamed immodestly dressed women who don’t wear Islamic headdress for being preyed on by men and likened them to abandoned “meat” that attracts voracious animals.

In a Ramadan sermon that has outraged Muslim women leaders, Sydney-based Sheik Taj Din al-Hilali also alluded to the infamous Sydney gang rapes, suggesting the attackers were not entirely to blame.

While not specifically referring to the rapes, brutal attacks on four women for which a group of young Lebanese men received long jail sentences, Sheik Hilali said there were women who “sway suggestively” and wore make-up and immodest dress ... “and then you get a judge without mercy (rahma) and gives you 65 years”.

“But the problem, but the problem all began with who?” he asked.

The leader of the 2000 rapes in Sydney’s southwest, Bilal Skaf, a Muslim, was initially sentenced to 55 years’ jail, but later had the sentence reduced on appeal.

In the religious address on adultery to about 500 worshippers in Sydney last month, Sheik Hilali said: “If you take out uncovered meat and place it outside on the street, or in the garden or in the park, or in the backyard without a cover, and the cats come and eat it ... whose fault is it, the cats or the uncovered meat?”

“The uncovered meat is the problem.”

The sheik then said: “If she was in her room, in her home, in her hijab, no problem would have occurred.”

He said women were “weapons” used by “Satan” to control men." ...-
