...like the sign shows, no stopping here folks, keep moving west...

LMAO. My dream has come true! This is the WAFTO of all WAFTOs for me. I've been making jokes about how Regina needs that exact billboard ever since I first heard the stat. And now there it is in actual existence. This is FANTASTIC! lol (And the silver lining is this is the first time PP's ever done anything I actually support!)

Thanks for putting a hop in my step on a Monday morning Kate!!!

Maybe it's the water...

Posted by: Texas Canuck at August 21, 2006 9:03 AM

They can't even spell "as easy as". Hillarious.

Posted by: Vitruvius at August 21, 2006 9:03 AM

I think you mean "hilarrious".

Posted by: Richard Ball at August 21, 2006 9:14 AM

This begs the question, where are the other important "capitals" in this country?

Which city can proudly claim, "Drug Abuse Capital", "Syphillis Capital", Haemorrhoid Capital", "Smoking Capital", "Gambling Capital",
"Prostitution Capital", "Panhandler Capital"?

I know Vancouver would be in the running for a few of these, and what about , "Industrial Capital", Education Capital", Health Care Capital", "Science Capital", "Specious Reasoning Capital"?

If we're going to do "Capitals", let's go all the way.

Posted by: dmorris at August 21, 2006 9:27 AM

Alas, I've never been good at speling. That's one of the reasons why I don't make billboards for a living.

Posted by: Vitruvius at August 21, 2006 9:28 AM

Someone has to find Chlamydia and stop her.

Posted by: Richard Ball at August 21, 2006 9:38 AM

*clap* *clap* *clap*... :-)

How about fear mongering public service message capital of Canada.

I trust this sign appears in the proper area of town where it will do some good....like on the city outskits on the hiway routes where the hitch hikers approach the city ;-)

Posted by: WL Mackenzie Redux at August 21, 2006 10:00 AM

Hilarious, anyone?

I'm afraid I lose my sense of humour, though, when it comes to STDS and Planned Parenthood.

They keep themselves in business by handing out condoms, putting young teenagers on the Pill, and making referrals to abortion clinics--they're not big fans of abstinence--and then come across as oh so solicitous when the kids contract an STD.

PP's been around for over 30 years and their mandate--suppported by tons of government money--was to lower the birth, abortion, and STD rates in our teenagers. Their programs have been colossal failures, and as far as I know they're still on the government gravy train (public health, you know?) Lots of people should be questioning this funding.

PP = Prophylactic Phonys

Posted by: 'been around the block at August 21, 2006 10:05 AM

Phonies?

Posted by: 'been around the block at August 21, 2006 10:07 AM

Of course Alberta has no civil service?? For that matter there are no STD's in Alberta? It must be favoured by god?? Right??

Posted by: ok4ua at August 21, 2006 10:48 AM

And I thought Edmonton's "City of Champions" was tacky, especially after the hay days of the '80s.

Posted by: Texas Canuck at August 21, 2006 10:53 AM

ok4ua

Although the sign is a bit on the tacky side, there is nothing wrong with the message (note the sarcastic woo hoo). The real humour here (which you misssed) is the spelling.

Posted by: jwp at August 21, 2006 10:58 AM

"And I thought Edmonton's "City of Champions" was tacky, especially after the hay days of the '80s."

Tex, I think you meant the french version:

"Ville de Champignons"

Posted by: tomax7 at August 21, 2006 11:09 AM

The city of mushrooms? I think the "ville de champignons magique" would be somewhere on Vancouver Island.

I think Ottawa might call us the country of mushrooms. Feed us sh*t and keep us in the dark, so they say. Does every new MP get a course in that?

Nothing wrong with a city full of civil servants making decent money. We all know the capitalists are driven nuts becasue they can't get their hands on it. It's give and take. Take your pick, losing some productivity or a few people hoarding money?

Driving through northern Saskatchewan last year I saw a signboard for a small town -- I can't remember the name of it -- but it said "**ville: A Place to Live."

Posted by: EBD at August 21, 2006 2:17 PM

The City of Swift Current "where life makes sense" could someone from speedy creek explain that one!

Posted by: cmj at August 21, 2006 2:46 PM

I think its "where life makes scents" in honour of the sewage treatment lagoon.

Posted by: cal2 at August 21, 2006 5:43 PM

...still love the Biggar one.

New York may be big, but this is Biggar!

Posted by: tomax7 at August 21, 2006 5:45 PM

I've got a picture of me--when I was much smaller--standing beside that Biggar sign. I wonder if it's still out on the highway. ;-)

Anyone want an STD??? Go to an oilfield city like Lloydminster or Brooks and go pee in a urinal in one of the various dance clubs. (clap clap clap)
As for signs how about Tisdales "Land of rape and honey" Feel sorry for all those non farmer americans driving through there. Although on the other hand could be kinky in a very sadistic kinda way.

(for all you with no senses of humour that was a joke, be it a bad one but skill only a joke)

Posted by: Franz at August 21, 2006 9:53 PM

Not only is the spelling bad, it is a lie. The std rate may be higher than the national average (around twice as high). Nunavut is 16x higher than the national average. I guess Planned Parenthood don't consider that Canada?

Posted by: honesty at August 22, 2006 12:16 AM

I am surprised they didn't say:

"Get your testes tested."

Posted by: Plato's Stepchild at August 22, 2006 9:19 AM

Is the sign facing into Sask in Lloydminster still there? You know the one that tells the last person to leave to please turn out the lights.

Posted by: FREE at August 22, 2006 12:47 PM

been around the block, I take it your name refers to the subject of STIs?

Sorry for the lowblow joke. Anyway, it's not PP's fault that there is still a glut of people that figure you can just tell kids not to have sex, without educating them as well. The problem is that sexual education including reproduction and disease transmission isn't taught at a young enough age in the province. It's too late to wait until grade 9. Education is power, and it seems too many of our kids are powerless to stop the spread.

Posted by: Saskboy at August 23, 2006 2:26 PM

This billboard is a hoot. Planned Parenthood has such a bad rep out in Western Canada that they have changed their name to "Options for Sexual Health" They spend a good portion of their time distancing themselves from their Eugenicist founder Margaret Sanger. They are world renown for being the Abortion Inc. I wonder if this use of funds will make the city fathers think twice about giving them a grant next year. No worries about mony for these folks though. They have Sugar Daddy Bill Gates shovelling it off the truck for them at the International level.

I could never figure out why Gates was so generous with the PP bunch until I learned his own father was president of the local PP where they lived. Like father like son I guess.

Posted by: LDI at August 24, 2006 4:27 PM

The billboard comes as no surprise. Anyone who has spent any length of time in this city (count 9 for me) would understand why.

Posted by: John Murney at August 24, 2006 6:46 PM

Alberta has the highest rate of female abuse in Canada. Quebecers smoke the most. Newfoundland has the highest birthrate. Quebec and Ontario have the most Biker gangs and organized crime. B.C. and Alberta have the most Asian gangs. The other provinces should do what Sask does.......Outlaw biker colors. This cuts down on the violence and gang wars. They should also provide free contraceptives in all high shools. This would cut down on pregnacies and STD's.

Posted by: ok4ua at August 25, 2006 1:39 AM

I think this sign is a fake. Someone doctored it on computer. Where was it?? Is this another urban legend??

Posted by: ok4ua at August 25, 2006 1:45 AM

ok4ua, I think it really was in Regina.
