Seriously, though. A reality-based show about pirates would likely involve a bunch of greasy file-sharing types and the greasier lawyers who pursue them. That's just not fun.

While I haven't seen the the second installment of Pirates of the Caribbean, I trust it would provide as much fun as the first one.

Sean, sounds like you'd prefer to re-cast Mr. Dithers in the Captain's role. Given how he's been pretty good with keeping his shipping company treasures from Revenue Canada I'd say he's been a real pirate. But he's too close to his greasy crewmates to be a Captain...better to send him where he belongs: the poop deck.

but hollywood is reaping in the big bucks with this fantasy. LOL

If you go to Pirates expecting realism then you're gonna be disappointed from the outset. Heck, if you enter any action or suspense movie out of Hollywood expecting a dose of plausibility then chances are you're not going to consider it a great film.

This is Disney fantasy; nothing more, nothing less. If you go with the "no way in hell this could be real" attitude then the movie performs much better.

Seriously, while it wasn't quite up to the first episode of the adventures of Captain Sparrow, and probably not Academy material, it was an enjoyable laugh to help forget, even if only for a short while, WWIII, terrorism or cop killings.

As with a lot of other movies coming out, A&E or some other documentary channel has done a documentary type of story on the "real" pirates of the Caribbean. Needless to say, the Love Boat it was not. Not the nicest people to go cruising with.

Lacks realism? Like Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Odyssey, Hamlet...The Bible.

The genesis of the post came while I was leaving the theatre with my friend, and remarked that I caught myself thinking that the swordfight on the paddlewheel scene went on too long to be "believable"...

You know - because "realism" is something we've come to expect in the undead seamonster swashbuckler genre.

I did find that the running swordfight that ended up on and then in a mill wheel was rather long. I mean, truly, how long could you run backwards on top of a paddle wheel in a fight for your life? 1-2 miles, tops!

Defamer has it right: 250+M for a 2.5 hour commercial for next year's pirates 3. A great time none the less.
