FlyerTalk scoops the world with news report!

Note: The first 24 posts on this thread concern events from May 28. I bumped it today (July 12) when the shooting began again. Discussion of the most recent incidents begin on post # 25.

Early this morning, I was on the "Who will be the next..." thread when Monitor asked me what I was doing up so early. I gave the following reply:

I haven't received an SMS security alert so I presume that it can't be too serious and the firing stopped about 30 minutes ago. ...- more

The round of death
It is 1:30 a.m. and the Israelis started pounding the city sooner than usual it seems. A couple of bombs were dropped i would assume on the southern part of the suburb of Beirut. But the shock was stronger than usual, the doors and windows shaked a bit. It is good that the glass did not break. As for me, I am engaged in an intense fight with a mosquitoe. Just one it seems, and I have deployed the vap machine and plugged it in the wall.

Silence is back. I can only hear the overheating of the computer and the little shivering sound of my fridge. In the meantime, I don't know how many people got killed a couple of minutes ago. Will it change something? For those who are living, not much. I'll be taking a shower before sleeping as I feel hot, and the mosquitoe kind of stressed me out. Maybe that is the feeling we have as long as we are alive. Death can be near but as long as it does not call us into its overarching arms we do not feel concerned. I mean we feel concerned morally, we are shocked, we want to do something, but organically, things still function as planned.

As I was typing another bomb was dropped that really shook the place out but did not manage to make the mosquitoe freak out. Now my head is hurting as I listen to the Israeli planes dance the round of death.

Davidovich's thoughts:
Here is where it gets scary, it seems that the U.S., French and British navies (including warships) are moving toward Lebanon for the purpose of evacuating their residents. If this avowed purpose is to be believed – and indeed they do face a legal obligation to protect their citizens – we can expect a lull in the fighting beginning in a few days. However, let’s consider some dire possibilities that would threaten a regional war. First let’s assume they are indeed coming to evacuate their residents. This seems like a good thing, but consider the rather disastrous results if they take hostile fire from any party. This is the spectacular event I spoke of earlier that the US and others could tie toward the menace of Global Jihad, whatever that is. I think the region could explode in what might be called WWIII, although this is a bit much given that the Axis Powers this time could barely last a week in regular warfare (guerilla action is another issue). Second,...

And that, my friends, is why Jeff Goldstein is on so many daily read lists, including mine.

Freakin' hilarious.

Adolf must have read the Q'uran prior to writing "Mein Kempf". It appears that strict doctrines of enforced blind ignorance and enthusiastic contempt are really the causes of sub-humanism...not inherited DNA.

just out of curiosity, what do the ME religions have against hogs, against eating pork? in biblical times there was the trichinosis issue but we have high temp cooking methods and besides ANY meat can get you real sick if its poultry infected with samonella for instance.

so what is the great verboten with the pigs? Ive seen hog operations very clean. hog farmers are very conscious of pathogens and the need to minimize the use and cost of antibiotics.

why are pigs singled out?

seems like a LOT of very obsolete dogma at play to me.

today's skill testing question: do you think Im a vegetarian?

hint: I just paid the highest price ever today for a piece of meat. 50 bucks kilo for a fillet of something called seabass.

Answering Robert J: The answer actually lies in the Torah as complementing the Ten Commandmens there are an additional 613 Laws in Leviticus. One of them cites the eating of pork as an "abomination" One would have to contemplate on the translation and meaning of "abomination" to discern its implications in practice.

Posted by: Canadian(n)a at July 16, 2006 1:05 AM

Robert, here's a choice quote from eMedicine's site:

"By the 1860s, trichiniasis/trichinosis was well-recognized as a disorder spread through infected pigs, leading to a cultural aversion to certain pork products, particularly German and Dutch sausage (Cook, 2001)."

Then read exactly what it is:

" When a human or animal eats meat that contains infective Trichinella cysts, the acid in the stomach dissolves the hard covering of the cyst and releases the worms. The worms pass into the small intestine and, in 1-2 days, become mature. After mating, adult females lay eggs. Eggs develop into immature worms, travel through the arteries, and are transported to muscles. Within the muscles, the worms curl into a ball and encyst (become enclosed in a capsule). Infection occurs when these encysted worms are consumed in meat."

However, the pork ban in Judaism is derived from ancient times. The Jewish scriptures ban several foods that can lead to death if prepared/eaten wrong. The food rules are thought to be the reason why the Jews of Europe were largely unaffected by most of the plagues that ravaged so many other populations. Of course, they then got blamed for the plagues and persecuted all over Europe. Seems some things never change....

Let's break down the bizarro ethos of the increasingly tiny minority of pro-World War III individuals.

Making fun of ethnic cleansing and war crimes: funny.

Criticizing the state of Israel for any reason whatsoever: "hate crime"

I'd tell Goldstein not to quit his day job, if he had one. Hey, take a break Kate, I'll write the next few SDA healdines for you.

Meh:

"Twelve Palestian children were killed yesterday in intense fighting....."

Feh:

"Barak to Condi, world: Shut your cakehole"

It's Tommy Douglas' Fault:

"Oil reaches 2.34 E^32 dollars/barrel..."

Warning: Graphic pics! Lebanese people and children caught in deadly crossfire.

From comment on blog:

Excerpt:

As I said on the post below, the sole reason Lebanon is caught in the line of fire now is Lebanon's failure to disarm Hezbollah. Lebanon may have been (probably was) incapable of disarming Hezbollah, which makes Lebanese who don't support Hezbollah feel they should not bear the brunt of the assault, but that does not change the objective fact that attacks on a sovereign state were carried out from another sovereign state responsible, at least in law, for attacks carried out from within its territory. Oh, had the Lebanese been busily disarming the Hezzies and the Hezzies had pulled an attack, I doubt you'd have the response from Israel you do, since it would be clear Lebanon was (1) not responsible and (2) doing its best to stop the Hezzies. But, in that case, you'd probably have invited the Israelis, or perhaps one of the Western great powers, to help with the disarmament.

Lebanon is truly caught in an awful position, but this is always the case when essentially unarmed people are caught between two parties at war. Did the Belgians want to be part of the war in 1914? Of course not. But, when the Germans crossed their frontier for an attack on France, they could hardly complain when, unable to stop the Germans themselves, British and French troops entered Belgium to oppose the Germans.

Unfortunately, I think the analogy may be apt here: the triggering events are small, perhaps even smaller than the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, but a larger war may be set in motion because at least one of the warring parties calculations suggest that it's better to fight now than in two or three years (which the Germans believed in 1914 for a number of pretty good reasons, and the Isrealis may well believe now given the Iranian nuclear weapons program and the constant Iranian threats to anihilate Isreal).

God preserve the Lebanese people. ...-

That was definitely funny.

I've got another:

1st jihadist: "Hey, did you fart?! This bomb shelter really stinks!"

2nd jihadist: "No I didn't. The Jews did. They ate the beans, not I."

1st jihadist: "That's it... I've had enough of this 'blame the Jooooos' bullshit. We're the only people in here, and you ate the beans. Come on, admit you farted, for Allah's sake!"

2nd jihadist: "Oh, all right! But I didn't fart. I crapped my pants. But that's the Jews' fault, 'cause they're scaring the crap outta me for the first time in my life. Who'da thunk they had the balls after all?!"

ST PETERSBURG, Russia (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Sunday that Group of Eight leaders were demanding Hizbollah release captured Israelis and halt attacks on Israel as the way to end an upsurge in Middle East violence.

"We demand first that the Israeli soldiers be returned to Israel healthy, that the attacks on Israel cease, and then naturally for Israel to halt military action," she told reporters.

So while bombing the civilian population in Lebanon 4 Canadians from Montreal were killed while on Vacation.

Posted by: neutralsam at July 16, 2006 7:36 PM

How is it that there are 16,000 Canadians in Lebanon and why are some in Hezbollah contolled territory against the advisory to stay away from this area?

Posted by: RodF at July 16, 2006 8:26 PM

"So while bombing the civilian population in Lebanon..."

It was my understanding Israel was bombing Hezbollah targets, which is why they have been issuing warnings to the civilians to evacuate areas they plan on bombing. It's too bad some Canadian tourists were killed, but that's what happens when you vacation in a country that allows a terrorist organization to use your country as a base for their attacks.
