Sentence raised for SK chief
REGINA - A former First Nations leader has been sentenced to three years in jail for fraud after a Saskatchewan court ruled that his original sentence was too lenient. Gabriel Gopher, 57, a former chief of the Saulteaux First Nation, had been serving a conditional sentence after he was found guilty of defrauding the band of $2.8 million. He had been sentenced to house arrest for criminal breach of trust. (CBC)

"Disproportionate response"
Puhhh - f***in' - leeeezzz! Well-put "where are the correct proportions actually laid out?"
This is yet more anti-semitism masquerading as intelligent enquiry.
Actually the correct response for Israel is to crush its enemies. That is after all what war is all about.
It's nice to see someone speaking the truth about the fishery. After they've travelled a hundred or more miles up rivers to spawn they're gill netted into extinction with absolutely nothing done about, because it would be racist. Rubbish!!!!

Sustainable Communities:
To expand public participation in building sustainable Northern communities.
The Circumpolar World:

=========== and now the EV-1
One of its fans was filmmaker Chris Paine, who was once a proud driver of an EV-1. And now, the story of why General Motors decided to short-circuit the production of the electric car is what powers his documentary, appropriately titled, Who Killed the Electric Car? We reached Chris Paine by telephone in Los Angeles, California.
GM Response
While there may be plenty of blame to go around in Chris Paine's documentary, in the end, it was General Motors's decision to discontinue production of the EV-1 electric car.
To find out why, we contacted Dave Barthmuss. He's the manager for public policy, environment and energy for General Motors North America, and he was also in California.

Posted by: TG at July 15, 2006 11:39 AMSpeaking of the "Aboriginal Fishery". A few years back one of the Indian bands from upsteam of the Fraser Valley complained that the bands in the FV were taking too many fish, leaving few for the interior bands.
When confronted by a BCTV reporter, the chief of the FV band said basically, "tough shit, we'll take what we want".
That summer, BCTV News found a warehouse where the chief of the same FV band, had a commercial fish dressing operation. The cameras showed huge tables full of thousands of salmon, way beyond their entitlement for "food and ceremonial" usage. A band member slammed the door shut and cursed the reporter.
BCTV asked Fisheries Canada, on air, why something wasn't done about an obviously illegal enterprise, especially in view of the on camera evidence. Fisheries blustered and stonewalled, and in the end, nothing was done.

Muslim Extremist Admits He Was Spy Who Revealed Canada Bomb Plot

Muslim extremist admits he was spy who revealed Canada bomb plot
By Toby Harnden
Muslim leaders in Canada have reacted with fury after a radical advocate of Sharia law revealed that he had been a government spy who helped to uncover an alleged al-Qaeda plot, writes Toby Harnden.
Mubin Shaikh, 29, came forward to confirm that he was recruited by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), the country's equivalent of MI5, and directed a 10-day winter training course in guerrilla tactics.
During the course, which Mr Shaikh set up in a field in the remote village of Washago, Ontario, young Muslims allegedly dressed in camouflage, used guns for target practice and taped a video used to recruit others.
He said that he was initially asked to befriend the leader of a "cell" of 17 Muslims who allegedly planned to blow up the parliament buildings in Ottawa and Toronto's stock exchange. The 17, arrested last month, face terrorism charges.
"This is like the pot calling the kettle black," said Tarek Fatah, of the Canadian Muslim Congress. "He was the embodiment of extremism in the city and his spying calls into question whether he's acting out of sincerity, or is trying to fish himself out of his own troubles."
Aly Hindy, the imam of the Salahuddin Islamic Centre in Scarborough, Ontario, attended by some of the 17 suspects, said Mr Shaikh and Canadian intelligence had encouraged and entrapped young Muslims. "The government and the people keep saying that we should not make our young people radical. CSIS is the one radicalising the youth. I call him CSIS Shaikh."
But Mr Shaikh, who has declined an offer to enter Canada's witness protection scheme, is unrepentant, calling the suspects dangerous "fruitcakes" who deserved to be jailed.
The self-professed fundamentalist believed in holy war in Iraq and Afghanistan but not in Canada, he said.
"I wanted to prevent the loss of life. There are no combatants on the downtown streets of Toronto," he said.
Nada Farooq, the wife of Zakaria Amara, one of the accused 17, said: "I know this man. May Allah curse him and make him suffer." ...-

The Pentagon Attack Simulation
Maybe this video, one of the most amazing computer simulations I’ve ever seen, will finally convince the Truthers (aka, 9/11 conspiracy rubes) that American Airlines Flight 77 really did deliberately plunge into the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, carrying 53 passengers, six crew members, and five Islamic terrorists from Saudi Arabia screaming “Allahu Akbar!” in the cockpit. ...
It’s a clinical presentation, but absolutely horrifying if you allow yourself to imagine what the passengers experienced as the plane flew only feet off the ground, snapping lamp poles in its final approach. ...-

Gadzooks Batman, finally someone is calling the airhead leftist's ideology bluff!!!
Ironic a nation founded as a British penal colony is leading the charge against political correctness...then again, fitting isn't it?
Two things:
1) penny: I couldn't agree with you more. I'm a career teacher--literacy specialist--with a sterling track record. (I used to be respected. Now, when I advocate for higher standards, which I'm able to deliver in favourable circumstances--e.g., timetabling and curriculum demands--I get, figuratively, bashed over the head.)
The regulations and sycophantic enforcers (read: admin.) of the ministry and board I work for actually HINDER my ability to do the job properly. The public school teaching culture is a political quagmire. Altogether mixing my metaphors, doing my job in the gulag is like wading upstream in molasses in January, while shackled, hand and foot. Oh ya, my mouth's covered in duct tape too.
The failure of public education to set high standards, academically and behaviourally, rather than appease, and the ministry's inability to devise a "learn to mastery" curriculum--it needs to be "narrow and deep", not "broad and shallow" as it is now--is an utter scandal. Heads should be rolling.
Unfortunately, heads are, but it's usually the heads of the teachers who try to challenge the idiocies (and idiots) of the system. The unions are generally altogether non pro-active: They miss all kinds of opportunities to hold the boards accountable. E.g., When involved in cases where admin. has egegiously ignored and misused board rubrics, the union doesn't produce or disseminate any documentation. Really! (Most board and union types--virtually all on the left of the political spectrum--are cut from the same cloth. Many are married to and/or party with one another.) Another scandal.
2) Very trite but just to satisfy a longstanding curiosity: I was once on a panel with Kathleen Mahoney discussing government family policy. She smugly told me she had 5 children. Wow! I thought. This woman doesn't seem to have a motherly bone in her body. (And 5 kids while pursuing a full-time, big-time legal career?) Does she have any kids of her own, any step children? Just wondering.

MADISON, WI (AP) -- A state Web site designed to shame tax scofflaws into paying up has netted more than $12 million, eight times more than expected, a revenue official said. When the site was launched six months ago, revenue officials estimated it would collect $1.5 million. "Public scrutiny helps," said state Rep. Frank Lasee, R-Green Bay, long a supporter of legislation to create the Web site. "I think what happens is your friends and family and neighbors say, `gee, you are living pretty high on the hog and yet you owe the government money.'"The site launched in January with...
